  1. I have not been banded yet, but I can offer some advice on the skinny hubby aspect...LOL. My hubby is perfectly normal weight, eats what he wants, manual labor all day and doesn't gain an ounce. Annoying, I agree. The new outlook we have taken is, with the amount I will be able to eat, I will probably be able to prepare one serving of a certain food, and all I have to do is mooch a few bites off of him! I'm excited to eat less, and weigh less than him, for the first time in probably 6 years! My nutritionist did tell me I would be eating roughly 3-6 meals, depending on size and hunger. She didn't really tell me, here is the number of meals I want you to eat, but rather, listen to my body, and learn to realize hunger and fullness. I think that is the secret. She told me hunger=that growling feeling in your stomach. Chances are, if your stomach isn't growling, you're not really hungry. And you're only supposed to eat enough to satisfy the hunger, ie, stop the growling. Of course, if we could all eat this way, we wouldn't be here, but the band is the tool that will allow us to think that way.
  2. Ok so I need some advice. Im having trouble deciding when to have this surgery (depending if i get approved of course) My company shuts down between christmas and new years so I wanted to have the surgery Dec 26th so I can go back to work the first week in January. I am so amped to have this. I am truly READY However, I am trying to keep this quiet as only a handful of people know about it and i dont want the holidays to be a problem with my preop diet and all with so many parties going on and stuff (im not so concerned with will power as i am about people making comments and maybe will power a little bit ) I was thinking of doing it January that way i can start my preop after new years...(i know, so cliche) But i have off that week in December I dont want to make my bosses angry. i mean if its surgery they cant do anything about it but i still feel so irresponsible. and i dont want to hear my coworkers make comments about another "vacation" i also am so AMPED for this i dont know if i can wait any longer...even if it is a couple of weeks so my question is, What would YOU do? im having a rough time with this and its weighing on me.... and I know alot of you will say "do whats best for you" but with this particular situation, i dont know what would be best because the end result will still be the same...WEIGHT LOSS!!!

    Ketosis

Nope. I haven't had ketosis symptoms, either pre or post-op, and I did hard-core Atkins for a long time before finding out about the sleeve. I lost 50 lbs in the course of a year, then gained it all back when I got pneumonia. If you have problems with kidney pain on the pre-op liquid diet, you should talk to your surgeon. However, if you're drinking enough Water and following the liquid diet properly, it shouldn't be a problem.
  4. I have my pre op day in hospital tomorrow and hubby is coming with me, even though he's squirming about it even now lol (He's not very good on the medical side of things). I have had my bloods, urine and poop checked already through my GP so tomorrow is just meeting the team and seeing the private part of the hospital I will be in on the 23 of July 2015. Going tomorrow is making it all the more 'real'. I'm not sure I will sleep tonight. We are going out Saturday night to the theatre to see a play but before that we are off for a meal and champagne to Celebrate the start of a new journey in my and our life together. On Monday I start an 18 day pre op liquid only diet. I have been good recently, not over eating, not eating any rubbish and have lost a bit of weight already. I don't know if the feeling in my tummy is excitement or nerves. What did you do before the op to signal the start of a new journey, if anything and looking back is there something you had wished you had done? Suggestions please, after all I have four days of debauchery left ~~ Hugs ~~ Kate

  7. I've noticed the tickers on people's posts and checked into them. Then I saw where one person said she had no goal weight. And I realized that I didn't have one either. I am 228 pounds now. My highest weight was 236. My first goal is to be below 200. My next goal is to be 179 or lower. I haven't been that thin in 20 years. At this time I feel like I cannot dream of being below 179. I've tried to lose weight for so long that it seems like an impossible goal to not only go below 179 but to stay below 179. The idea is overwhelming. So for right now I'm going to take baby steps. I'll worry about 179 when I get there.
  8. It sounds like you are doing a really good job at managing your weight now! Just because your family is overweight, you are not destined the same fate...after all, my whole family is skinny, and I'm not!
  9. Hello Shirley, How are you? Thank for your information and your advice. You know sometime you need someone to be there for you and just say that's allright you can do it. When I read your message I felt I can lose the extra pound myself if I try little harder. So far I haven't tried any diets or anything. Currently I weight 133-135lbs. It fluctuate time and again. My concerned areas are ab and thighs. So now i am going to see the website which you told me to go and lets see the difference. All the best to you as well and let shed some more pounds before 2012...New year New Weight...WHAT DO YOU SAY??? Just by saying this I felt good.. Thanks shirley.... I knew I won't be qualified but I just want to prevent me from getting to that point where there is no help. When there is time I want to be in a better shape and enjoy life more. Anyways thanks you so much for the information and

Where did you go for 6 month pre op diet?

I went through a lap-band center and they took care of almost everything. My insurance had a 4 month waiting period (Aetna POS) and you had to keep your appointments within a certain time frame or else you had to start over. I actually gained weight during the 4 months but lost more than what was required by my surgeon and insurance during the 2 week pre-op diet.
  11. It went really well. He was awesome! I am kinda a sarcastic jokester, and he was too so it was perfect! He told me all the pro's and con's, and asked if I wanted the sleeve (insurance won't cover it, so thats a no). Then he told me to schedule my surgery! He told me he was extremely confident that I would be at my goal weight within a year if I stay motivated with my diet and exercise. He thought it was funny that my children (3 & 5), exercise with me. They even keep me on track when I don't want to do it! He told me I should have my surgery now, and not wait until February, so I was all on board, but when I called the surgery scheduler, she said that he doesnt know how scheduling works, and she jokingly said that he just shows up, and doesn't know how it works behind the scenes! So February it is. Once my insurance gets accepted they are going to call me to schedule!!! YAY!

    New here.... A few questions.

The only people I know who have gained back their weight were not following the program. This isn't a cure all. You still have to put in the work by making good eating choices and exercising regularly. My only challenges were finding what I could eat as a vegetarian with multiple food choices and the mental game of making good food choices on a daily basis. Other than that I've had a relatively easy time of it. Despite having a high BMI going into this I had no co-morbs and I had been exercising regularly prior to surgery.
  13. Well, I had my consultation with the surgeon last week. He's very kind and his staff is also good. Unfortunately, I seem NOT to be fat enough for surgery. The height my PCP and surgeon took are a solid inch apart. DAMMIT. I should have asked the surgeon to do my height again - and I will when I go back. (if I go back, that is...) He told me that it would be unethical of him to do the surgery on me with a BMI below 40. (I think I came in at 38.6.) Without a comorbid condition, I am on my own unless I gain some weight. That said, he did think that I should see the pulmonologist because he thought I might have sleep apnea based on a few answers on the questionnaire. Happily, there was an appointment about 30 minutes later since the pulm had a cancellation. I saw the pulm (also very nice and took time with me) and he thinks that there is a 75% chance that I have sleep apnea. Um. Yay me? I have been scheduled for a sleep study. I do not sleep with any humans in my bed (just cats), so I don't know if I do snore or gasp for air. Obviously, I am conflicted and quite disappointed. Without a positive diagnosis of sleep apnea, I am out on my butt. If I do have it, then I could probably qualify under my insurance. (Though my credit scores are all over 800, I simply cannot afford private pay.) Oh, and it seems that my insurance is really good (the office lady said so) and covers everything but the nutritionist. I learned so very much on this site and through others' experiences and now it may all be for naught. It is just so disappointing. Of course, I ate a whole box of donuts when I got back from my consult. :scared2: I just had to vent a little since I do not have anyone I can tell about this.
  14. I am in the process of completing my weight management courses in order to hopefully get approved in November. I am teacher (and in Pennsylvania ) and will have to have surgery over winter break. Is anyone else scheduled for the same time frame? Looking for a sleeve buddy.

    4 Weeks To Go

You will be fine ladies! I took the month prior to surgery as an extra amount of time to lose as much weight as possible, because after banding some people have a hard time until they've got a few fills. As for the surgery itself, it is an absolute breeze. I was at the hospital by 5:30am, in surgery at 7:30am, and on my way home at 11:30am. I felt really good afterwards, and did have the pain/soreness in the abdomen, but don't worry about this because it's not too bad at all- I took my pain meds for 3 days before I felt I didn't need them. I really recommend buying a travel pillow or a mini pillowpet to hold against your tummy the first week or so when standing/sitting/laying down. It was a lifesaver. I am now 8 days out of surgery and feel almost back to normal. I have a little gas pain in my shoulder and soreness in my abdominal muscles, but am able to do everything I had before.

    Wierd?

Totally of the subject I posted...Sammee, the weight in just dropping. You are going to be underweight shortly!! In all seriousness you are a model bandster and pretty much one of the most successful I know. You are an inspiration and yes I am extremely jealous of you :) Hugs
  17. I definitely agree with you about changing the way you think. I am having this same issue. I was talking to my fiance about this today during my preop visit. My surgery is Jan 9th and I am scared to death. I have just realized that I will not be able to eat mostly anything that I have been eating any longer. Its very scary. I was also thinking about how am I going to feel when I become physically smaller. I am 36 yrs old and have found myself just now being self confident about my weight. Now it seems I will have to get secure with being "skinny". I definitely see how this is an emotional journey. Good luck on Friday.
  18. I read an article, can't remember where, that mentioned focusing on what you CAN eat rather than what you CAN'T eat- planning is really important. This is hard at first, but it gets easier. I find if I don't think about what I'm going to eat ahead of time and make sure it's available, I end up eating crap. I also weigh myself every day! I know a lot of people say don't do that because your weight fluctuates, it's depressing, etc, BUT it's not depressing if you're seeing the numbers go down every day. And if they're up a little, it makes me pay more attention to what I put in my mouth that day so that I can see a drop the next morning. If I'm not seeing a drop (or at least the same number) then I know I need to change something. Good luck on Friday!
  19. Your right. It is because we have failed at diets time and time again, is why we have decided to have surgery to loose weight. Prefer not to call being banded a diet. It is a physical change to my digestive tract to control my eating, and that is exactly what it does.

    Pre-Op Vegan Diet Plan

I met with my nutritionist this week and he gave me my Pre-op diet plan. I thought I would share since I haven’t been able to find a vegan plan on this website. 7-14 days prior to surgery The following diet will provide you with approximately 1000 calories and should meet your daily Protein requirements. The purpose of this diet is to deplete your glycogen (fat) stores, which in turn will help the liver to shrink and make your weight lost operation easier and safer. lean meat substitutes (70 grams protein) 2-3 cups non starchy vegetables Broccoli, cauliflower, cucumbers, onions, lettuce, carrots, tomato, green Beans, asparagus, radish, pickles, mushrooms May use fat free low calorie dressing or hummus 3 tsp fat Olive oil, canola oil, Grapeseed Oil, Coconut Oil, Flaxseed oil, Walnuts, Hemp Oil or Sesame oil Calorie Free liquids Water, propel, crystal light, fruit2O, plain coffee, plain tea Protein Supplement Protein shake Garden of Life Raw Protein Beyond Organic Protein Formula I’ve already started this diet even though I don’t have a date set. I am having a hard time getting in 1,000 calories.
  22. Sorry for the pain in the butt by the ins company. I really hope they come through for you. I am having to self pay. It's a big thing, because we don't have much money. But, this weight is contributing to many of my current health issues. So, it's not really an option from where I sit.

    Thinking about giving up...

Britt, We certainly can't tell you what to do with your money, but I can see why you're at the point of just paying yourself. I'm at the end of my 6 months of insurance hoops and for the last month I have felt like running off and getting self-pay WLS. The waiting can be a bit much at times. I can't imagine how agonizing it is when you've seen alot of your weight creep back AND you still don't have any answer from insurance. Although I think I'm pretty good to go with my insurance approval, I told myself yesterday that if they denied me for some odd reason, I won't waste a minute on an appeal. I'm going to find some money and pay for it myself. They probably intended for you to just give up the fight if they made you wait long enough but you can't spend too much time thinking about stuff like that. It sounds like you've suffered long enough...
  24. So I'm thinking about giving up on my insurance fight and just switching to self-pay. I had a slipped band over a year ago. It took 6 months to get the insurance company (Fed BCBS) to finally agree to remove the band but they denied a revision to VSG stating it wasn't medically necessary because my BMI was under 35. I submitted an appeal to the Federal Office of Personnel Management in October for what was supposed to be a 60 day appeal. They "lost" my case and had to start over. Then they closed it because they didn't understand I was asking for a revision and not some sort of random partial gastrectomy. They finally sent it out for review but it sounds like they didn't select a bariatric surgeon because the answer last week came back that it isn't medically necessary because my weight isn't over a 40 BMI. The told my attorney to wait for the report and then call and talk to the nurse but I haven't heard back yet. At this point it's been almost 7 months since I submitted the appeal. This has been going on for so long I'm almost back to my original weight. If I had it to do over again I'd have done a self-pay revision with Dr. Aceves right from the start. Heck, I'd be at my goal weight by now. I just don't have it in me to keep this up. I went ahead and requested a surgery date with Dr. Aceves and put first-class airline tickets on hold on my miles. I can't think what hoops the insurance company would have next. They just don't get that the standard of care for a revision doesn't require you to regain all your weight first. I could go forward with the surgery and then sue them after the fact but I'm not sure it's worth the mental energy after all this. I had some old Microsoft stock lying around and it's almost enough for the surgery. I'm thinking that I'll never miss the money and can just get on with my life. I don't want to self-pay up here because it's really expensive and they don't cover complications like Dr. Aceves does. I could be down there next weekend having this done and just moving on. Thoughts? I could use some additional input... Thanks! Britt
  25. I have heard a lot about broken relationships after large weight losses and even though I feel that my marriage is very strong I am concerned about the outcome. I am having surgery for me first of all, and my family second. I want to be more active and healthy. I am tired of not going places because of the way I look and feel. My husband likes me just fine the way that I am and gives his blessings to me because he knows how important this is for me. I am looking for your thoughts. Thanks! Amanda
