  1. OMG, I have Crohn's as well. 80% of my 150 weight gain has been from 11 years of being on and off prednisone, and I'm in my 6 th week sleeve post op and wow, I feel normal. A bm once or maybe every other day vs at a min 7 , my terminal ileum pain has been non existent, no bloating, normalcy. I had no idea thus would be a positive for my Crohn's but so happy it is.
  2. I am 7 weeks out and I think every phase so far has had a difficult part. After surgery is hard with the weight gain from the IV's in the hospital and the liquid stage, not to mention the reflux. Not drinking while eating has been difficult for me. Now that I have more tolerance for food sticking with 70% Protein and 30% vegetable has been more difficult. At this point I sometimes mourn food. You go to your favorite restaurant, you order and you can literally only eat 3 bites of it. Sometimes I find I just want to eat my food. Also, eating too fast. Hard to make 3 bites last a half hour! Overall it has been worth it though.

    JULY 2014 SLEEVERS GROUP

When you are in the hospital, they pump you full of fluids. Which causes weight gain. They also pump gas in your abdomen during surgery. This all adds weight. It took me a couple of days when I got home, but it did come off.

Revision from Lap Band to Gastric Bypass

Good luck to everyone. I had my band placed in 2008. Two yrs ago I started having problems with my band being too tight (last fill 10/09), reflux, food getting stuck, weight gain, and the worst for me, the health problems I was trying to prevent by having surgery in the first place. I am hoping to get approval for revision soon. I was self pay with band surgery, but I currently have Humana. I am scheduled for an EGD and esophageal manometry on Aug 1st. If my surgeon can find a medical reason why I need the revision my insurance will cover it.

    So depressed right now

Please, as was said do not be too hard on yourself. My surgery is scheduled for next Wednesday (7/30) and my surgical team told me to expect temporary weight gain after surgery. So, hold your head up. Remember, the key word here is "temporary"
  6. ⚠️⚠️⚠️ I was in the army, ate right and exercised but wasn't able to do as much as I hurt my back but 15 years of service... and wanted to be able to retire. I got sleeved in jan 2006. Self pay 36 bouge. I was 205-210 at starting 5'6" I got down to 143. 5 months in I got PG and had a healthy baby boy 1 mo. before my 39th birthday. I stayed thin for years however in 2011 my cspine collapsed I had surgery and started taking neurontin. I had gained some weight back by then 160's and was able to eat what I wanted. I had to stay in bed and wasn't able to do much for quite awhile. I stayed doped up and eating more than usual before and after my surery total disk replacement and fusion in my neck. Pain meds do things to your body and the neurontin made me eat. Also drank red bull I think it was flavor and the b vitamins that made it so addicting. Long story short I have gained all my weight back it came on fast after I got to 185 and my back and hips started hurting so bad I could barely walk... Anyway. It happened to me and now I'm going to go through the sleev process all over again... This time I know what I'm getting in to as well I'm more prepared and hope against hope that I'll be able to get back to myself and exercising. For me the right amount was fast walking 30 min, 15 min sit ups and 15 min push ups on my knees 5 days a week. I just want people to know that this weight loss surgery is not permanent unless you make it that way. your hair grows back and you will be able to eat just about the same you ever did. Use your time to change what and how much you eat AND drink and pay attention to weight gain of 5 lbs. if that happens don't shrug it off don't buy bigger pants fit back into the small pants by exercise. You don't have to run a marathon but don't make excuses or wait because the weight can and will come back. I hate that I wasn't able to maintain my weight and I know that I could have done more to prevent it. Sad, 44 and I can hardly move because of my vitamin d and calcium deficient bones and this weight just makes it worse. Please read my words and heed my 5 lb. warning. Write if you have questions⚠️⚠️⚠️

Need Help To Get Focused Again...

In the search bar, look for the boot camp diet. It is really hard and you have to set your mind to not putting anything in your mouth in between meals, and not to snack during the evening. It's fine to have one evening snack of something, but getting up all evening long and getting something was exactly what led to my weight gain. You can also google intermitant fasting and that works really well. That's how a bunch of us here took off our regain. The links are in the veterans forum.

    Kicking myself

I was banded in December and have done really well with following the rules and doing everything the "right" way. I've also been really good about making good food choices, avoiding junk, exercising, and just following a healthy lifestyle. Until now. I've been on vacation for the last week and I've eaten like a pig. I've eaten tons of junk, even candy and cake . I weighed in this morning and I'm up 2 lbs. I know some of it is probably Water retention but I'm sure some of it is true weight gain and I am kicking myself for allowing that to happen . So last night I decided that, starting today, I'm going to do liquids only for a few days to help get me back on track and then it's back to following the rules and making healthy choices again. I've come too far to mess this up now!

    JULY 2014 SLEEVERS GROUP

I, too am wondering: hw 302 sw 269 cw 274 Sleeved 7/16 How have I gained 5lbs since surgery??? I'm 3 days post-op. I don't want to go to my support group next week with a weight GAIN!

    Alcohol

I usually try to stick to spirits if I drink and believe me...when I drink I binge drink out of control... It's summer and I'm 23. Last summer free before I have to buckle down for nursing school so you do the math! I do drink until oblivion but I also low carb and I usually drink bacardi and crystal light. I end up in the morning with little to no hangover. The first time I binged after my surgery I had drank vodka (smirnoff lemon) mixed with crystal light lemonade and the volume of it itself had me throwing up the next morning. Be careful with that! I am careful to only have one or two mixed drinks and just do shots along with them if/ when I drink. I also didn't drink any sort of alcohol until 4 months post op. The alcohol hasn't affected my weight gain/loss at all and I usually drink like that about 1x-2x a week.
  12. Hi everyone, had my sleeve surgery July 14th. Home now and almost through the first week of liquid diet. So far so good. Word of warning that I haven't heard people talk about. Be prepared for a post op weight gain only because they pump you full of fluids in the hospital and your body is swollen. I'm still trying to get rid of all the fluids my body is holding, 10lbs of it. I'm not worried I know my weight will drop back down I was just a bit alarmed and wanted to share so others knew that this is normal and temporary. Best of luck to everyone!
  13. SandyM

    Normal?

You will have swelling for a little bit and that will account for the weight gain or lack of weight loss. This is a time for healing and you should focus on that. Protein is an important part of healing and since you aren't able to eat the dense Proteins like meat, you will mostly get those in Protein shakes, greek yogurt etc. I know a lot of people tell you not to worry about tracking during the healing phase, but getting good proteins is vey important. It will also help you so you aren't as hungry.
  14. Weight gain is the nightmare we all fear and live with. I am not cured of obesity, I'm simply in remission. There is no doubt in my mind I could gain back every pound I lost. There have been a few key statements people have made in this thread that resonate with me. Paraphrasing here: Success requires vigilance Success requires self-honesty about what we eat Success requires tracking as a way of accomplishing both of those When I'm vigilant about my diet by weighing, measuring, tracking, and recording, I do best. I can do a WHOLE lot of damage in a just an hour or two. I don't have a normal body or metabolism, and I know deep down there is very little wiggle room for me. Don't get me wrong, I do let my guard down from time to time, I do get weary of the constant struggle, but I have to keep my eye on the prize. I love the way I feel and look, and I am grateful for what I consider to be a gift of being thin. I remember that, and it helps me to continue to do the things that have led to success. In the end, I have way more control over my success or failure as a result of having the sleeve than I did before surgery. I hope the "reset" stays reset!
  15. I know this my LipstickLady friend, and yet...... I chose the cute little nuggets. But No more. I solemnly vow to never again go through a drive thru - even drove to Kansas from Florida and back, no weight gain. Gained 4 lbs. on a 7 day cruise, and lost it immediately. I am blessed to be old and retired. I got off track when my NUT said I was eating too much Protein, and I got gout in both big toe joints. I am going back to 1/2 filet mignon, fish, tuna, and more protein and a little exercise as I can, and I should see a difference. Cowgirl Jane posted some good pointers last night that opened my eyes. Sometimes we think we are on point and then duh! Not! Thanks for the help, LipstickLady, we all need it. As you can see Wynnie, we are all helped here. Best of luck. Linda

    JULY 2014 SLEEVERS GROUP

Yeah-I heard you are very sullen after-and should wait a week. I was just sleeved on the 14th discharged on the 16th. For the entire time I was there they had LR running at 125 ml/hr. That is 6 liters if fluids in a very short amount if time. That will add to the weight gain post surgery along with being swollen. I too weighed 4 pounds more then when I went in. I started at 360 was 335 at the start of my 2 week preop diet. Surgery day 314... Couldn't help myself but weighed myself when I got home and was 319, but just now I weighed myself and I was 309. I have been walking and drinking fluids but everything tastes yucky. Although today I ate some strained cream soup and sf chocolate pudding with protein added. Eating some "regular foods" has made things taste a little better.

    Secret Surgery

I personally am the queen of yo yo weight gain/loss. Although it is more weight than I have lost in the past, it is not unusual for me to lose and then balloon. I have kept a weight log since 2004 and I have quantifiably yoyo'ed 30 or more lbs every 18 to 24 months for the last 10 years. They just might question when I don't gain this time. dde0b. That is so me! Always up and down, I didn't tell anyone at work, and they haven't said anything yet about my weightloss I'm pretty sure it's because of my yoyo dieting in the past, and that's fine with me. I'm only 5 weeks out.

    Depression

Bulawookie, I know we have both dealt with depression, and while I support you, I have to respectfuly disagree with your statement " depression is anger turned inward. " Depression has nothing to do about anger, it has to do with a body that became sick and couldnt get well by itself. Thats why sometimes you can't "snap out of it ! " You need medical help , meds or a therapist, etc. Or, in my case , something a little different, but boy did it work !!! And yes, exercise and a healthy diet can help some, but it does' nt cure everthing, and its hard because when you're depressed all you want is comfort food , mostly carbs because they have the most seratonin in them . ( seratonin = happy ) Depressed people are lacking in seratonin, so they crave carbs = weight gain = frustation = vicious cycle.

    Depression

Hi there, hope you're doing well. I don't know what to tell you about your long time of depression. Mine came on in my mid 30's after a a very sad , difficult personal issue. Im usually a very upbeat, outgoing happy person, but depression kicked. my. rear ! Its horrible to be sad, depressed and angry 24/7, add the slowing down metabolism and weight gain, and sleep problems! Well as you know, its NOT pretty... A friend reccommended a product called Plus, from Mannatech. (google Mannatech for more info) I started pounding down Plus 4 pills , 3x a day. 12 days later it was like someone lifted a layer of sadness off of me ! I got better and better, stayed on it = depression gone. Both my husband and I take several Mannatech products daily, what a difference ! ( He' s diabetic, no weight probs). (I am NOT a Dr. so discuss with your Dr before taking taking anything ) Hope this helps, I wish you well ! Keep us posted !

    Depression

Yep, I suffer from it too. It is a vicious circle depression and weight gain. Not sure who you get your scripts from but a real pyschiatrist is a must as GP are not for mental health. Also I suggest a counselor to talk to because you need that to help with why you eat and what to do to get it and keep it stopped on a mental level. Don't leave this problem hanging, the band can only help with the hunger not the monsoon of other problems we suffer from. Divide (problems) and conquer! Although husbands are great it is common to suck at understanding this issue. Find help today, call and get a referral or whatever you need. I know that is a lot to do when your depressed so ask a family member or a close friend for help. Hugs, Colleen
  23. I'm not sure if this is the best place to post this question, but here it is. I have suffered from depression all my life. I'm sure that has contributed greatly to my weight gain over time. Although I have my depression under control a good share of the time, I still suffer from depressive bouts that immobilize me. I am entering this WLS process without any support, although I am married. My husband is pretty much oblivious of me and my needs. He lives in his own world. I have a difficult time making friends so I don't have a support system there. So, I'm on my own. I am worried that I will fail because of my depression. I have been on several medications over time and have not had any success with them. My questions, how many of you suffer from depression and how do you or will you plan to handle it and succeed with WLS?
  24. Thank you, I dont really care about being regular, if it stops I'm definitely not going to complain lol. I'm not worried about getting pregnant I dont believe I want children any longer. And my general feeling about the weight gain was exactly that, you eat you gain.

    Afraid I'm not gonna lose

Slower weight loss coupled with great exercise = LESS loose, hanging skin. I'd say that is a huge plus, not a negative thing. Keep pushing, keep your head up, exercise, and throw out that scale. Today. If you're like most of us, you probably have clothes in different sizes that weight gain prevented you from wearing. Take out the next smallest size and try it on maybe once per week to see how it fits. The scale can be such a terrible and discouraging thing. Use clothes to monitor your progress instead. Best wishes to you.
