    Struggling to Consume Calories/Protein

    Thank you! These answers really help put things in perspective. I think I’m just overwhelmed by the program’s protein requirements for the first 2 weeks (60-80 grams), which is just not attainable by me right now.
  3. First of all you are doing great with with loss- you are going to see some minor ups and downs over time as your body heals and settles —so just keep focused. My doctor advised protein first, and if i do that i have NO room for any carbs- and if i do it’s like a bite of sautéed squash or two green beans. Keep up with your water and your protein goals and you should be good to go— that being said, when i was in pureed stages, I had mashed potato and grits (maybe 2 oz at a time of one ) because I couldn’t think of anything appealing to eat for that week and they were on approved food list. When you move to soft there are all sorts of soft meats you can have- tuna, salmon, chicken, ham, pork that has been pressure cooked— soon soft hambuger. Eggs are protein, cheese has protein.. mashed beans on occasion (Taco Bell pinto bean side has 180 calories, 9 g Protien). Look up baked ricotta recipes. Or cottage cheese? Good luck— and ignore the comments from Dad- and remember you are doing this for yourself — and you deserve to be cared for and to take care of your body.
  4. I only had water, broth and Gatorade zero the first three days. Then I had 2 protein shakes per day for the first week. For me, the key was sipping constantly. I also used Gatorade zero with protein if I just couldn’t get another sip of shake down. At about a week post op, I tried protein broths and loved the Unjury brand chicken. I’ve heard some people thin out yogurt (like Oikos Triple Zero). Just try your best to get as much protein as you can. 50 out of 60 grams is pretty good! Just keep the goal in mind and sip, sip, sip!
  5. Hi all. I’m 1 week out from having gastric sleeve surgery. The procedure went well, but I had a good amount of pain for the first few days (where I couldn’t really consume anything other than water, Gatorade Zero and broth). Since about day 4, I’ve been trying to consume somewhere close to my protein goals (60 grams). I just can’t get there, or really be anywhere close. I’ve never loved protein shakes, and can only have 2 ounces at a time. I’m lucky if I consume 1 shake/day. I add in chicken bone broth, and a little bit of nonfat yogurt/cottage cheese (which my surgeon allows), but I just can’t seem to consume more than 250 calories/day (at best 40-50 grams of protein). And it is a constant struggle (since I have been good about my fluids). It is wearing me out a bit, trying to consume protein, and it impacts my ability / endurance to get outside and walk. Any suggestions?
  6. HI! I am 2 months post-op 40lbs down. In 2 weeks I gained 3 lbs. My cravings are back from before surgery. Its so hard to meal prep as well since my family are also big and cook unhealthy meals. I eat small portions but its been a lot of carbs. Any recommendation? What should I be eating at 2 months? My father tells me I shouldn't be eating at all but my nutritionist says otherwise. Its kind of the reason i'm back to my cravings. Father problems. I want to do better for myself. Any food recommendation for the soft stage? Thank you for any help.

    It a really hard ask when we have all done diets in the past and failed, but we only need to believe in the process. I was a doubter too. All you need to do is stick to your teams plan and have some patience. After you have stalled a few times and stay away from the scales as much, it will sink in that you are steadily loosing.
  9. I had my surgery 2/22/23. I am going through the same exact thing!! I am down 25lbs and the scale hasn’t moved in 2 weeks. It is extremely frustrating thinking I am doing something wrong. I am hoping this is just a stall and the weight will start coming off again. Good Luck!

    Best protein bar?

    I am obsessed with Built Bats. They are lower in calories than most other protein bars (130 to 180 depending on flavor) and DELICIOUS. They have three types: bars (which have a caramel-like texture), puffs (marshmallow filling), and granola (like caramel with granola mixed in; different from traditional granola bars), with several flavors of each, and an ever-changing selection of limited release flavors. It’s a matter or personal preference, but granola bars are my favorites, followed by regular bars, and the puffs taste good but are not as filling. Others I like include Fit Crunch, Verb, and Fulfil. I have seen Walmart and Trader Joe’s selling singles of various brands of protein bars, which is nice if you want to try one before you buy a whole box.
  11. I started to develop a rash very similar to what you are describing when I was also about four weeks out from surgery. I suspected it might have been this: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6558236/ Fortunately I was able to clear my rash with just slight modifications to my diet. I added just the tiniest little bit of carbohydrates to my intake with some apple sauce, sliced banana, etc. Previously I had been very, very strict with no carbs for approximately six weeks.   12. Last week (4th week post-Op) I developed a rash on one of my ankles/feet that has now spread to both my feet/ankles, calves, upper thigh, and as of today now both my forearms. Last week I switched from Premiere protein to Fairlife protein, I was in the sun, I had a pedicure after shaving, someone else used my shower, and I started eating soft foods. SO much changed last week that I’m stressing out about what’s caused my rash. It’s not anywhere near my surgery site - nothing on my stomach. Through Kaiser I was able to get a steroid cream prescribed that I’ll pick up and meanwhile using a hydrocortisone cream, but I want to know the cause so I can make it go away or keep an eye on this. Super frustrated as my surgeon’s P.A. responded back to me saying, “This isn’t related to surgery” and yet so many people report rashes after the surgery. Any motivational words or advice would be greatly appreciated. Everything with eating and weight loss has been going so well - so this is just so out of left field and I wasn’t prepared or expecting this.

    Weight gain

    Go back to eating as you did at maintenance. Thar was that caloric intake that allowed you to maintain that lower weight so you’ll lose. You were still focussed on protein, portion sizes, making better food choices (nutrient dense), fluids, etc, I don’t really exercise in the traditional sense but I do stretches & use resistance bands (& sit ups - I hate them but I do them) to help with my back & oozy discs. I do what they call exercise snacking. Several short bursts of activity through out the day. They say this is just as effective as a single longer session. I do mine over four sessions lasting for 3 to 10 mins depending on what activity I’m doing. You may find this easier than running/walking miles or hitting the gym. I also changed my every day activity. I have stairs so I make multiple trips a day - why carry things in one trip when you can do two or three. I park further away from where I’m going. Today at a shopping centre I deliberately circled the centre twice when I could have done my chores in one circle.
  14. To add to the great advice above: It takes time for your messages that your full (or hungry) to get through. This is why we’re told to eat slowly. By the time you feel full you likely have eaten too much. You will find too that many of those old signals are different too. Try not to eat until you are full but until you’ve had enough which requires you to think about your eating & how you feel. When you have those extra bites are you eating them because you need them or because you want them? This is a time of learning. About healthier more nutritious foods. About why you eat, how & what you eat & when you eat. It’s about establishing new eating habits & so on. Focus on eating your protein first, then if you’re able vegetables & finally again if you are able any complex whole/multi grain carbs as you’re allowed. Check your portion size recommendations & calories (if given them). I often only ate my protein & then if I could eat vegetables it would be a green bean or a small cauliflower floret & nothing else. Your weight loss will be erratic: stalls, normal fluctuations, diarrhoea/constipation, hormonal fluctuations, etc. and yes some people just lose more slowly. Have a chat with your surgeon, dietician & a therapist to help you work thorough all this.

    7 weeks post op

    I lost 16 lbs in month one and 12 lbs in month 2, so at seven weeks out you're ahead of where I was. I started out at 373 lbs and bottomed out at 138 lbs (I've since gained back c. 20 lbs). Took me almost two years to lose that original 235 lbs. So I wouldn't get too nervous yet if I were you... the two weeks with no loss - as long as you're following your clinic's program, it's just a stall. Probably the first of many. Just stick to your program and stay off your scale for a week or two. As long as you're compliant, the stall will break and you'll be on your way again. They typically last 1-3 weeks.
  16. I am 7 weeks post op and only lost 25 pounds. I haven’t lost a single pound in over 2 weeks. Has anyone else gone through this and then still continued to lose weight? I thought for sure by 8 weeks I would be down 35-40lbs. I am nervous about not losing anymore weight.

    Weight gain

    I am 8 years out from my gastric sleeve. I have gained 35 pounds. I need to get this off! My lowest weight after surgery was 155. Now I’m 190. It’s gotta go. I am retired now so I’m not as active as when I was working. I have back issues and can’t do a lot of exercising. I have been going to line dancing 1 day a week and I can tolerate that pretty well. Give me some tips how to jump start my weight loss again!
  19. I’m 4 weeks post op VSG (3/13/23). Have lost 20lbs, just dropped into the 180’s for the first time in 7 years. My abdominal wall healing has taken longer than expected, so I haven’t been able to move as much as I’d like. Goal is to reach 170 by the time I visit my parents in late June. I’m learning just how finicky my body really is. Makes me feel less crazy about all the years of trying to lose and keep weight off….Not enough protein? STALL. Not enough fluid? STALL. Injured? STALL. Drink stuff with fake sweetener? You guess it…STALL! Lol 😂 ah well, I love this body anyway. Keeps things interesting if not downright insane and who wants to be normal anyway? 😛

    Pain When Eating - NOT Stomach Pain

    I am 6 1/2 weeks PO, (Feb 23) and was handling soft foods well, and completely sticking to plan. On Easter, I had ONE corn chip, and within minutes I had a pain like I had eaten glass just under my right breast. Hadn't experienced anything like that with other foods, It lasted until 3 in the morning! I start "regular" foods on Thursday, but now I am definately more nervous!
  21. I think your body is really confused. You had major surgery and probably didn’t eat much the first couple weeks, then started eating heavier than you should and sugar as well. The body probably latched into the sugar and carbs to replenish stores and turned the rest to fat (explains the gain). Then you go back on track and your body needs to adjust again, but after losing some pounds you’re eating less often (so your metabolism machine is slower) and still having sugar even if it’s a small amount. Your body is really smart. After going through trauma, it’s going to try to stabilize. Here’s what I do know… you still have time to get yourself back on the right path. You will need all your fluids (sugar free), the protein prescribed by your plan, very low carbs and all of your vitamins. If you don’t at least do these things, you’ll probably remain frustrated and stuck. It’ll take a jolt and consistency to recover. I believe you can do it because you already got this far. Dealing with our emotions and food is not easy, but it is possible. I’m pretty sure everyone here would pat you on the back and tell you to get back in the ring, don’t be so hard on yourself and stay focused. You’ve still got time to turn it around! You can do this.   23. I hear ya! It is very difficult, frustrating, and down right annoying when you hit a stall. I’m 8+ months post-op and have hit 3 remarkable stalls. The longest one lasted almost a month, the other two were 2-3 weeks. Just follow your body’s cues and listen to them. The stalls will go away on their own in time.

    August surgery buddies!

    Everyone has lost so much. I've only lost around 44 pounds, and I'm still hovering between being overweight and obese, at BMI 29 to 30. The first three months of this year have been one big stall for me. Last year, I lost a little or a lot in alternating months. So the first month I lost a lot, the second month a little etc., except once I had an almost two month stall. Now I have stalled for three months. What if I don't lose any more? I'm still chubby. I honestly don't see that much change. I still don't look good. I'm so disappointed.
  25. Congrats. Mine has been three months and counting. I'm wondering if this is it for me. If I'm going to be one of those people who fail at everything, including weight loss surgery.
