Calories and protein at almost 3 weeks
KristenLe replied to angelb429's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I would keep trying different things. You could make your own Protein shakes. Creamed Soups, hummus, refried Beans with cheese & sour cream, ricotta bake. I was told to eat 5-6 small meals with 3 hours in between. Sent from my KFFOWI using the BariatricPal App -

Oh no! Weight gain!
Jefferyc79 replied to Fabstar55's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Have you been working out? And how quick did you gain the 10 pounds? Was it a month? Two months etc. So many different people have different concepts to what their bariatric nurse/surgeons have suggested or required in their program. The program that I am in states that no weight should be gained anytime you go in for an appointment. Every appointment that you have they check your weight and want to see if you have lost any weight. You have to remember that the main reason for the 6 month diet is to so that you can be disciplined enough to stick to a plan (even if you lose 5 pounds over 6 months). I haven't had the surgery yet but from what I hear you won't be able to eat a lot of food like we're use to doing. I have learned to eat much smaller meals. Trust me it was HARD. But, in a short two months I have lost about 26 pounds. I started off by eating what I loved and just eating smaller portions. Then from there I started eating healthier lean meats, rice and veggies. Then I totally switched it up. When I don't have a drink with my food I fill satisfied longer and it's making me not overeat. Try and shock your system and switch it up. You don't want to be penalized for gaining weight and getting denied by your insurance. I'm not an expert at this. I'm new too. But, those things have worked for me. Oh and plus now I'm up to at least 4 planned days of working out. I really wanna be super successful at this. You can do it. You just need a little boost. Distance yourself from your eating buddies, Try not to eat after 8pm. If you are starving and have to eat drink a Protein shake (low in sugar) or eat some Peanut Butter or nuts. It'll help you get through the night. And no matter what EAT BREAKFAST! And try and stop drinking calories. Those things are what I find has made me successful so far! You can do it! -
10th Month: How many calories?
OutsideMatchInside replied to OutsideMatchInside's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@@Munecagirl85 I have a lot of muscle mass and I want to keep it and I want my hair to grow, so I increased my Protein. I eat 4 to 5 times a day and I try to get 20g of protein or more whenever I eat. Also once i got past 6 months, I had an appetite and I didn't have one at all before. I need the protein so I am satisfied and not hungry. I eat Keto also, but I rarely eat enough fat, its hard to get the fat in, since I mostly eat lean Proteins to get my protein in without eating too many calories. I like Keto but it is a hard balance with a limited amount of calories to work with. -

I use the Soy protein base from GNC. It has 30 grams of protein with 1 cup of skim milk. I use the chocolate flavor. I love them. I've been using them for a year. You can always get them on sale as well. -

I have the sleeve currently... I first thought I would look into having it redone. But I'm learning there are more options. More choices make the decision harder I guess... -
I was hungry (or was I really) and grabbed a "protein" bar (more of a fu fu bar) and ate it in 2 minutes without even thinking because I was trying to get a rush project done at work. I feel like I ate Thanksgiving dinner, TWICE!!!

I had my post op appt today and was happy that I've lost a total of 24 pounds. I lost 15 of those pounds since surgery and the others I lost on pre op diet. Today I can have real food which is really exciting . I ate some refried beans watered down with broth (the dreaded broth). I melted some cheese and used a little taco sauce. That might have been a bit too adventurous but I did it. I ate it without any problems but it didn't seem that filling to me. Plus I don't like the 16 grams of carbs so I think I'm not going to eat it again. Plus the taco sauce is good but has 2 carbs per tablespoon and that could get out of control. It was super tasty though for having not had food in practically 20 days! But I'm throwing it out b/c I could foresee it causing me problems as I do love mexican food. Later I made 2 eggs in the microwave. Sat down and ate 5 bites and very suddenly a super full feeling came over me and I felt nauseous. I even spit out the bite I had in my mouth. I think the egg was more filling and I will stick to high protein low carb from here on out.

Today I am 6 days post surgery and have lost 29 pounds in the last three weeks. This past week has been a total adventure, complete with all the ups and downs. My surgery went well and my one night hospital stay was uneventful. Doctor and nurses were all very pleased. When I came home, I noticed that I was spitting up. Not vomiting but spitting up a little froth. Called the doctor and was told that was saliva. My stomach was swollen and didn't know what to do. Interesting. Hadn't heard that one before. As soon as I was home the sip, sip, sipping began. Although I had read about others having a hard time to swallow, I had no such trouble. Mostly drank Ensure Clear and it went down great. Pain was manageable and the most pain was due to my hiatal hernia repair, not the stomach. Felt like someone was sitting on my chest. Doctor said that was from the repair on the diaphragm. So far, so good. Then came 3 days post surgery. The chest pain was gone but I could not get on top of the abdominal pain. I figured my abdominal muscles had been moved during surgery and they were very upset with me. Took several doses do pain meds that day, which very much frustrated me. I really wanted off the pain meds ASAP. The fourth and fifth days post surgery were a real low point for me. I wasn't sleeping well and my stomach was giving me fits. I read that we are not supposed to be hungry or it is just excess hormones. Ya right. My stomach was growling, grumbling and throwing the biggest fits. My doctor wants me one a clear liquid diet the first week and introduce skim milk the second week. Full liquids on the third week. I was in such turmoil and agony that I finally said screw this nonsense. Being stupid and brave, I introduced some regular protein shakes. They seemed to go down well but I was still miserable. I tried a little bit of applesauce, just a couple of spoon fills. Didn't bother me but it tasted horrible. In desperation I tried some yogurt. Huge mistake. Only had a third of the container but oh the pain. Finally I found that the regular protein shakes like Atkins and Muscle Milk along with Jello and water through the day helped me and kept me satisfied. Just had to keep sipping. Woke up on day 6 (a Sunday) and decided I would not let this beat me. My attitude had been very poor and my wife, going into this process, was concerned about making her life miserable. Seems I'm not always a nice guy when I'm sick or frustrated. I had learned through other posts that attitude was the key and mine was bad. So, with determination, I made up my mind that this is the Lord's day and I would rejoice. I had not shaved in 3 days and that was part of the problem. I felt gross and that affects everything else. So, I shaved and got fully dressed. A friend came over to visit which lifted my spirits and then my wife and I got out of the house, the first time since surgery. I had been off pain meds for 3 days so I could drive. It felt so good to be normal again. One of my household duties is the laundry and Sunday is laundry day. Got the laundry done and that made me feel better because it was normal and I accomplished something. Now I want to make sure the next few days are normal. Tomorrow is early voting for the primary runoff in Texas. Think I will go vote so it gets me out of the house. I have other tasks planned for tomorrow. The last few days have been idle for me, which is most likely part of the problem. Here's to another good day tomorrow.

A plateau at 3 weeks out? What gives?
JoiaRox replied to ChefEm624's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Em - Over and over I see people talking about stalls early (and throughout) the journey. 3 weeks out seems to be a VERY common stall around here. Keep doing what you're supposed to be doing (hydrate, protein, multivitamins) and the scale WILL go down eventually! Have you measured your body parts? It's crazy, but sometimes we lose inches rather than pounds. Your body is recovering from two major shocks to your system (surgery & calorie reduction), but you will make it! Just keep breathing and following the rules - you'll be rewarded for your efforts -

Can you bring some protein bars with you? As long as they are individually sealed, you can take off the ship and with you during the day. -
Author: Detoxinista.com Serves: 4-6 A creamy, fruit-based soft serve dessert! Ingredients 1 fresh pineapple, peeled, cored and chopped 1 cup almond milk 1 tablespoon honey (optional, for authentic sweetness) Instructions To get started, you’ll want to freeze the pineapple chunks. I chopped mine a day ahead of time, and froze the chunks overnight. You could also purchase frozen pineapple, if you prefer. As you can see from the picture below, the frozen pineapple reached the 6.5 – 7 cup mark on my blender pitcher. This recipe works best in a high-speed blender, like the Vitamix, because you’ll need to be able to pulverize the frozen pineapple into an ice-cream-like consistency. A normal blender will most likely not work, but a food processor might. Combine the frozen pineapple with the almond milk and honey, then blend until a frozen sorbet texture is achieved. For an authentic Dole Whip presentation, transfer the frozen dessert to a large plastic bag, and cut off the tip to create a piping bag. Pipe the pineapple whip into 4-6 dishes, and serve immediately! Any leftovers can be frozen in an ice cube tray, and used in smoothies later.

Vets/Nuts Please Help
johnlatte replied to shayv123's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
the best thing I can tell you is to track everything you eat. Use Myplate or myfitnesspal. It will give you a solid idea of the number of calories that you are consuming along with carbs and Proteins. What I eat daily is going to be different than what you might need to eat or someone else. Are you seeing your nutritionist? That would be the place I would start first. Everyone on this board does something different and we all think that we are doing the best. You need to figure out the eating plan that works best for your body, the amount of weight you need to lose and your activity level. Once you have that defined then making a meal plan gets a lot easier and tracking keeps you...well on track. Hang in there. (btw, I am not considered a vet on this board...) -
Best Post-op Protein sources
kjordan83 replied to supermom223's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
BIG believer in ISOPURE!! It's a great way to get your liquids and Protein easily!!! I also pour mine into little tupperware bowls and freeze them... They become like a protein slushy! So if you drink two a day... That's cheaper than what you would normally spend on a fast food lunch, alone! Totally worth it!!! I sampled all of the FLAVORS before I purchased them and here is my assessment: Isopure FLAVORS - ranked: Apple Melon (flavorful, strong) Alpine Punch (not strong, but sweet) Grape Frost (not strong, not sweet) Blue Raspberry Peach Mango Icy Orange -
Hi Guys, I am about 7 weeks out from gastric bypass surgery and I have some questions regarding how much I should be able to eat. I have been cleared to eat normal food since week 4 and since then I have been sticking to three meals a day of high protein homemade meals like chili, tilapia baked in salsa, an egg baked in lentil stew, or chicken cooked in crushed tomatoes. I had my surgery in Mexico so my aftercare from my surgeon has been essentially nonexistent even when I called early on with some issues I was having. Additionally, my health insurance here will not cover any weight loss attempts whether it's surgical or non-surgical so I can't afford to see a bariatric surgeon or nutritionist so I am relying on you guy's experience to guide me in terms of what a normal volume of food is at 7 weeks post-op I weight out all of my food and food prep so I know exactly what and how much I am eating at any one time. I am worried that at 7 weeks post-op I can eat anywhere from 4 oz to 6 oz of dense protein mixed with a sauce at a time. This is almost always at dinner time. So my usual breakfast is one container of Siggi's yogurt which is 5.3 ounces. That usually takes me an hour to finish. I feel no restriction when I eat the yoghurt but I feel no need to eat until lunch after having it. My lunches are usually chilli or chicken in some sort of tomato sauce. There I can consume between 2 oz to 5 oz of food. How much I can handle before I feel full varies day to day. Now the biggest issue comes at dinner. I can and have in the last week eaten up to 6 ounces of dense protein and sauce in one sitting within 30 mins. Now usually there will be 4 oz of dense protein 1 ounce of beans or other vegetables and then the remaining ounces will be sauce. Now I make sure to not drink water 30 mins before, during, or after my meals so I know the issue isn't that. And I am eating dense protein like ground beef, fish, or chicken so I should feel more restriction. I read posts from other people and they talk about how they can barely handle 1 ounce of meat at 7 weeks out. But it seems I have an iron stomach. I haven't eaten a thing so far that bothers my stomach or gives me any pain. So I am wondering if the issue is the fact that I am eating my protein with sauce? I have tried dry chicken and even with that I could eat 3 oz at only 4 weeks out with few problems. This seems like way too much food. I know stews like chili are considered sliders but the fact that I can consume 3 oz of dry chicken seems like way too much. Maybe I should limit the amount of sauce I use with my food. Mind you I make my sauces from scratch using canned tomatoes or so I am not using high carb premade sauces. What thoughts do you guys have? What has your experience been? Is my capacity way out of line? Am I pushing things too far? I am really starting to worry that my surgeon may have made my pouch super big and that will hinder my weight loss. To date I have lost 27 pounds since surgery and 42 since my 2 week pre-op diet. Sorry if this super long post it's been weighing on my mind.

Am I Eating Too Much at 7 Weeks Out?
GreenTealael replied to mc2017's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Sounds like you are making your foods slide. The sauce will have a very different effect on your system when combined with the protein than if you were eating drier protein sources alone. Try reducing the sauce amount or eliminating it completely to test how much dense protein you can eat by itself. Since you have no guide lines of your own I will share what my team provided, take whatever you want from it, toss what you don't need. Eating: Only eat within a 30 min window, 1/8-1/4 cup food (1- 6 months), 1/4-1/2 cup (6 months+) of dense protein first Vegetables: As tolerated Mechanics: Do not drink for 30 mins before it after meals, do not eat prior to 30 mins after drinking No straws No grazing, only defined meal times Water: Bare minimum of 64 oz of liquids primarily water Protein: 60-80 g daily (work up to this goal by 3 months out) Dense protein: 1oz by weight 1-6 months goals 4 oz by weight 6+ months goals Primarily through food, stop supplements as soon as possible Eat a variety of protein sources to prevent aversion Carbs: Vary depending on tolerance, but no rice bread or pasta for the first 6 months- only whole grain variety sparingly there after Sugar: Less than 5g of sugar per serving, avoid anything with more than 5 g added sugars in ingredients list Fats: Limit to health oils from food sources like cheese, nuts, olives, seeds and some oils as needed Vitamins: Daily multi w/ iron, calcium citrate, B vitamins, D vitamin Hope that helps Safe Journey! -

Best Post-op Protein sources
epc317 replied to supermom223's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I didn't have to do a clear liquid stage post-op, but straight to full liquids. However, I haven't been able to stomach many of the protein mixes I liked before surgery. (I also thought Isopure was nasty both pre and post-op) The one thing that works for me is Syntrax Nectar Roadside Lemonade. I mix it with water, lots of ice and a lemonade flavored Crystal Light.
