    High caloric intake

I was vague because im not certain im tracking accurately enough. Im almost 6 months out and 1000-1200 easily according to MFP (but im beginning to wonder about the accuracy of it) And yes mostly protein or supplements then veggies and fats. Everything homemade except protein bars shakes and yogurt. Just seems too high to me.

    Relationship changes

I can totally relate. My husband is slightly over weight but 60lbs less then me, pretty average Ordered pizza in front of me during pre-op, went thru McDonalds drive thru with me in the car on my pre diet, drinks pop and alcohol non stop, buys all the food he likes which consists of chips, tacos, chocolate and rice. I find the hardest is when he questions why at 2 weeks out I can’t have just one French fry or BBQ pork chop or buys me creamery style ice cream with chunks in it for a treat. I asked for plain Greek yogurt and he bought vanilla light yogurt because he doesn’t realize the sugar difference. I gave up coffee which I had a super hard side effects bc I drank so much prior and now he wants to know when I can have it again, I have tried to discuss the surgery and life after but doesn’t want to know the details just wants me to be thin. I was 90lbs lighter when we got married 6 years ago, so I have changed allot. I went to Mexico alone, it was hard to be alone I was the only one that didn’t have a support person in the clinic but everyone was super friendly and would stop in my room to say hi or see if I wanted to join in on their walk. As well you are recovering and tired allot. The hardest part for me was the hotel time, it was very lonely and having to set timers to take your drugs, sip water and you had to do everything in the hotel for yourself. As well no one to just talk with. Like my first sip of water or my first jello lol your pretty excited. I was sad I couldn’t share that with him. I did ask him to make me jello when I was due home and he made 2 batches of it. So I think they just need to learn by our day to day living our eating choices are going to be much different. Something to note; I was a heavy drinker so this has also changed in our relationship for the better, as I haven’t drank since the pre op diet started. Which as you can imagine is a massive adjustment which so far he is handling quite well.

    High Triglycerides- Advice Needed!

I just read this on a google search. A few quick serving ideas: Sprinkle ground flax seeds on hot or cold cereal, or natural yogurt. Add them to breakfast shakes or smoothies. Sprinkle them onto cooked vegetables, or add them to a salad. Use ground flax seeds as a substitute for eggs in baked recipes. (Note: 1 tablespoon of ground flax seeds, plus 3 tablespoons water, is equal to 1 egg. 3 tablespoons of ground flaxseeds can be substituted for 1 tablespoon butter, shortening, or vegetable oil.) Flax seed oil can be used as the base of homemade salad dressings. The article also gives some insight into grinding your own, if your interested: https://www.healthcentral.com/article/how-flax-seed-can-improve-your-cholesterol-levels
  4. I am not sure about the tablets. I mix the ground flax in oatmeal, or yogurt. i'm looking for other ideas too. I just learned too that if you can ground your own, even better. the store bought ground version degrades after a while, according to our nutritionist. i'm not sure what timeframe, but my next go around might be whole flax that I put through my coffee grinder. maybe do a weeks batch at a time. but I like your idea of trying for 3 months, then waiting for blood work. this is hard enough as it is. I certainly dont need to grind my own if store bought helps sufficiently.
  5. Hello fellow Bariatric pals! I am 6 days post gastric sleeve surgery. My surgery was performed April 18th, at St Francis Indianapolis by Dr Shamseddeen. Some Background info on me and my choice to have bariatric surgery: I am male, age 48 married with one adult child and two teenage children. I have been married for 21 years. We have a Noah's ark of pets but our primary pets are two cats, and three dogs (Lucretia a 6yr old female Newfoundland, Freya a 4 yr old female St Bernard, and Vivien a female 5 month old Newfoundland pup) I am a Registered Nurse who had specialized in geriatric/hospice/long term care before having a heart attack in 2016. I switched to homecare and work primarily with special needs and medically fragile children. After my heart attack with stent placement I started to number my health issues and I had a lot, obesity, smoker, copd, sleep apnea, Congestive heart failure, High cholesterol. I began to treat these with medicines, cpap, quitting smoking, light exercise. The one issue I did not really tackle was my obesity. With quitting smoking my weight went up as I replaced smoking with snacking. I had grown accustomed to being larger and just came to accept I was the fat old man, thats just who I was now so no use in fretting over it. Then my primary doctor handed me one more diagnosis... diabetes. I was just taking metformin, and was so far non insulin dependent. As a nurse who cared for older patients I have witnessed diabetes ravage my patients, I have prepped toes for amputation, then parts of feet, then legs... I was 329 lbs at this time and was fearful of dieting turning into yo yo dieting that would lead to greater weight gains. I began to research bariatric surgery. My first visit to St Francis Bariatric Clinic was September 14th 2017 (From first visit to surgery was about 7 months). I started my journey with the monthly meetings, nutrition appointments, pysch evaluation, and getting numerous surgical clearances from my other doctors. I started my preop dieting and got down to 317 lbs. When I started my preop liquid diet I was my worse enemy when my friends would come over to celebrate my surgery.... by offering me "one more for the road" food offerings of pizza, white castles, take out chinese food, etc. I appreciated the sentiments but I should have been stronger in my resolve to say no. But even with temptations, day of surgery I was about 311 lbs. My Surgery Day experience: Pre-Op prep was no problem, no complaints. IV placed, skin scrubbed, some labs drawn. Basic stuff. Rolled back for surgery, again no problem, introduced to surgical team as I was wheeled into surgical suite, moved to operating table and arms positioned at sides. I don't even remember when they administered sedation as my next memory was waking in recovery. Waking in Recovery: I won't lie..I was in intense pain and either due to sedation or just the level of pain I couldn't say how much I hurt, all I could do was moan..loudly and forcefully. I have never given any pain I have had a rating of 10 on a 1-10 scale, even when I had my heart attack, but this rated an 11+ After a minute or so I think i was given something for the pain and I passed out again. I awoke in my hospital room. Day 1 post op: In my room I was greeted by my wife and nurse. The nurses I had over the next 24 hours were great in treating me, as well as caring for my family. I was allowed one oz of ice chips to sip on and I had my PCA (pain medicine pump) to hit every 15 minutes as needed. I was wearing a truss, had a drain ball on my abdomen below the large incision site where my stomach portion was removed. I also had a foley cath placed. I have placed thousands of foley caths, but have never had one myself. I had an intense urge to urinate that made resting difficult. I kept joking with the nurses I was going to swipe a 10cc syringe to empty the cath balloon and remove it myself. Later that day I had two small 1 oz cups of chicken broth brought in for me to try. I was able to down 1 over 20 minutes and couldn't even start the 2nd. I had a 1 oz cup pf ice chips now and then but was not worried about dehydration because of the bags of saline and antibiotics they had running in via my IV. I started doing my inspiratory spirometer and I say this as a nagging nurse who has had many patients post op refuse to do them, now as a patient i can say that the inspiratory spirometer does help a lot. My first day I was walked a short distance, and that night I slept in the recliner as I found it more comfortable then the bed. I had still had pain but between the PCA and re-positioning it was manageable. Discharge day: I was walked again a little farther then before. I had my foley cath removed (Yay!) which led to 48 hours of a burning sensation on urination that eventually faded. I had my IV discontinued, and started on liquid pain meds which about a little less then 1 oz took forever for me to sip. The only notable pain I had that day was when they pulled my drain tube out. I knew it was going to be uncomfortable, but the nurse didn't just pull it out quickly, or even as 1 long pull but did it in 3 jerky pulls that sent pain rocketing from my navel down to my toes. Aside from that all was well, I had moderate pain, was sore and hurt to stand from sitting or to bend but it was all tolerable. Back Home again and starting my new reality: Since being home at first I tried to religiously follow the instructions I was given on nutrition, being on the modified liquid diet, taking my vitamins, and staying hydrated. I ran into several issues. First I had no appetite, you really do have to force yourself to eat, but also to eat properly over 20-30 minutes to get down a 2 oz cup of broth or yogurt. To quickly and I would feel nauseous and full. I would not drink within 30 minutes of either start or end of eating. I had no thirst for the first few days. Even taking small sips I found it hard to get in 40-60 oz's of water a day. I have been struggling to get in 70g protein a day. First the shakes would make using the Premier dry whey protein mix would froth a lot and give me a very full/gassy feeling. The thickness of the shake even after thinning would fill me up quick after a few sips. The taste wasn't good, but not terrible but you won't catch me saying "Ya know what would taste good right now? a protein shake" The vitamins. All of my vitamins right now are chew-able. Only problem I have is I have no teeth so I have to suck on them until they dissolve over time. Again not the best tasting, but they also seem to trigger fullness or nausea in me. I may switch to liquid vitamins, pills (when I can), maybe even the patches I saw advertised here. Some solutions I have found. I was looking over youtube videos and saw some people make Popsicles out of their protein shakes and I did the same with Powerade zero. Doing this I was able to get down at least half my shakes in a day (40g protein) and it really helped top off my liquid intake by sucking on the powerade pops I made but still limited the intake over time so I wouldn't get sick. It is day 6 for me and it is a learning process. I see that we all have many things in common but that everyone's experience with bariatric surgery is very much personal and individualized. The highlight of my week has been actually going under 300 lbs for the first time in many years and passing gas on day 5 (Hey to nurses passing gas is as much a sign of life as a pulse or respiration plus shows our digestion is working) I have been reading many of the forums and have enjoyed the stories and humor, and appreciated the advice given and I hope to read many more over the next year. Good Spring (when it gets here, I am from Indiana after all) to all
  6. Hello, I am new here so I hope I am doing this correctly. I am excited to be here. I had been doing very well, until yesterday I woke up in extreme pain. It is sharp and on my left side under rib cage and radiates down. I have begun eating more pureed foods which I had no trouble eating. I have been exercising everyday since doctor released me, for 60 minuets at moderate pace. Sometimes I feel so hungry, and I feel as I eat to much but truly don’t think I do, but maybe I do. Here is a day for me. I have a 1/2 cup of yogurt, protein shake, jello, and 3 popsicles, and a egg. Then my water. This is my day right now. I have been somewhat constipated, but I don’t think that is where the pain is coming from. It might be I guess but I wanted to see if anyone else has experienced this as well. I am afraid to over eat or stretch out my stomach. Oh and I did eat a jolly rancher with out thinking about it. I forgot that I was not supposed to do that. ( I hope I did not mess something up over a jolly rancher!) Your thoughts would be appropriated! Hope you all have a wonderful day! [emoji8]

Sleeve or bypass, how did you choose?

Lol, it’s ok.. takes a little to catch up.. this is my second time attempting the journey for approval(had to put things on hold in the past) so I’m familiar with the whole process. The RNY is the bypass.. the doctor was the first one to suggest it after reviewing medical history.. after my first visit with my nutritionist and her also learning my eating habits and my medical history she too suggested the RNY.. I’m 5’6 278 lbs with a BMI between 43-45 He said with the bypass and following physical therapy and nutritionist orders I can lose a little more than half my weight! (That would take so much pressure off my joints and my lower back) I have two small slipped disks in my lower back and need to lose this weight to avoid further damage(amongst other health issues that have been recently discovered) smh I’ve been chocolate free for almost 4 months.. I’ve been eating A LOT of sugar free cherry flavored jello lol.. helps with my sweet tooth.. also yogurts and bananas. I am trusting my Dr he’s been doing these types of surgeries since 1997 and believe he has seen enough since then to know what works best for the individual cases he’s dealing with. Definitely educate yourself on what’s best as well and discuss why you feel the other option is best? From what I’ve seen the support groups I’ve been to in the last three months they have a lot of lap banders and quite a few VSG coming back from other drs that had those procedures done and being revised to the RNY Good luck with your decision.. definitely make an informed decision.. the support groups helped me a lot as well with sticking with the RNY [emoji991] Instagram: milaalmodovar [emoji317] SC: almodovarmila
  8. Hi everyone It has been several months since I was on here . I am now at 262 lbs yaaa. but i have been at a stall because of a medical issue . I tried going back to my job in the oilfields and my functional capacity test was terrible the company made me lift 125lbs from floor to a shelf at chest level 15 times then walk 100ft with it and step up and down off a stool. 30 times. then walk back and do the shelf one again. had to do this 3 times. But long story short the drills were no problem but it ripped my hyadila hernia repair on my gastric sleeve. I passed my test but 3 days after I was having such severe pain and I couldn't eat much anymore it hurt bad to eat unless it was soft stuff so I ate a lot of mashed potatoes and gravy with ground meat for almost a year.( Forgot to say I had to resign from my job it hurt to bad). finally went back to my surgeon and he did all the tests and found that my stomach was falling out. It damaged my sleeve too. So I just had a revision surgery Apr 2 . Had a nice rip in there. took 9 or 10 stitches to fix and of coarse revised to a gastric bypass now. It has been a challenge to have this change a tablespoon size stomach lol I can do this I have been through it before and with all you great people supporting each other makes this so much easier. I am converting to my soft stage today . i had a tablespoon of salmon mixed with yogurt and seasonings of coarse. yummy . It was a good 30 minutes to eat that but it went well. I am going to attempt to attach before and after pictures. I should lose about another 50 lbs. with this surgery. doctor wants only 30 to 40 at the most ? his goal weight is 230 lbs. but he thinks it will go closer to 200lbs. as I am 6ft 2inches tall and haven't been 200lbs since 8th grade lol.
  9. I had a revision from a sleeve to a gastric bypass . due to a hernia repair that ripped and damaged my sleeve and my diaphragm. it is tough eating but i am drinking at the least 130 oz a day in fluids and am just now starting on my soft food stage . I take Salmon and mix it well with plain yogurt and season salt. put in 1 oz cup and eat that every 2 hrs . plus all my drinks and such . Lots of ice pop's. protein shakes suck but have to get them in. and vitamins . only thing I am struggling with this time is constipation . haven't gained any weight after first surgery.. just stopped losing weight due to the soft foods I was eating were not on my list of healthy but they were easy to eat and didn't cause pain . now it is a struggle to eat anything over the size of a golf ball. Haven't figured out how to cook one of those down yet lol
  10. I’m on day seven after surgery and I am so hungry. I can start full liquids tomorrow, which means premade protein shakes, creamy soup, yogurt and pudding. I can’t wait, and I know it’s not solids, but I had to be better than the first seven days. Age: 37 Height: 5’6 BMI: 37 VSG: 4/16/18 GW: 160 MFP: Fit4LifeAR

    Food Journaling

I haven't felt the need to log anything since surgery, but I am now almost 8 weeks post up and calories are starting to creep up... especially because I've been terrible and having liquid calories and frozen yogurt and slider foods. Today was the first day I felt out of control, and I retroactively logged all of my food: 1500 calories. Yes. Only 8 weeks in. I could sit around and think of myself as a failure or I could just pick myself up and realize that I don't have the insane restriction I had anymore and that food choices DO matter. Coincidentally, it is my lowest protein % day. I am going to adhere to that protein first rule from now on. Despite being at a 500 calorie deficit I feel terrible. It feels even more terrible than my 4000 calorie binges back in the day.

Need breakfast ideas - what are you eating for bf?

It's tough. Sometimes I just have hard boiled eggs and coffee. Other times, I make a great microwave scrambled eggs with a bit of cheese in it--yum!! Sometimes bacon/egg/cheese on english muffin but I'm not really sure if that is the best. the crustless egg fritattas are good. And then on weekends I usually have plain greek yogurt with granola in it.

    Shakes and satiety

I find cutting to one shake a day works for me at this stage- usually in morning. Having the rest of protein from food- 4 oz chicken or turkey, eggs, yogurt or cheese HW 242, SW 236- (Bypass 12/20/17) GW#1- 199 [emoji736] (2/11/18) GW#2- 180 [emoji736] (4/2/18) GW#3- 160 CW 173 5’6”
  14. Tonight's experiment: wonton wrapper lasagna (made with ground turkey and a Greek yogurt cream cheese/mozzarella/cheddar/spices mix instead of ricotta, which I don't like) and tacos (made with taco meat pilfered from my sister's supper). In the oven now!

    so confused about food...

Great...you wanna share what your nutritionist added for you? Also, great job getting to gym👍🏼 I find easy fast protein to be yogurt, cheese, shrimp (keep frozen and take a couple out, thaws in water quickly), hard boiled eggs, deli meat, and I made mini egg casseroles in mini muffin pans, froze and microwave 2 for quick snack. I haven’t gotten sick...I really chew, wait between bites, and time myself to make sure I’m eating slowly.
  16. I can’t have salad, raw veggies till 2 months out. But enjoying the food I can have...chicken, shrimp, meatballs, chili, chicken crust pizza, yogurt, eggs, cheese, and lunch meats. I also had 1/4 piece of thin sliced rye bread toasted and 2 crackers. Still not getting any fruits and hardly any veggies cause I’m trying to get protein in and that pretty much fills me up. Today at a tea event, I had 1 Mrs. Thinster coconut cookie thin (serving is 5, but I had 1= 30cal. , 2 sugar, 2 fat, 3 carbs). Is this bad? Anyone else tried?

    Any Oregon Sleevers here?

I had my VSG done on April 2nd at Legacy Good Samaritan in Portland. Dr. Emma Patterson from Oregon Weight Loss Surgery (OWLS) was my surgeon, with her partner Dr. Avishai Meyer assisting. Surgery was a breeze, taking about 2hrs, and then I stayed one night. I've been doing great so far post-op, and was able to manage any pain with liquid Tylenol and ibuprofen, which you can get at Target or Walmart. Thankfully I haven't really had any trouble with nausea, and am currently 13lbs down from surgery day weight. Getting enough protein in is the hardest part, but GenePro unflavored protein powder has been my lifesaver on that one. There's 30g of protein per scoop, and 2 scoops easily mix into a 32oz Gatorade (I always get the lowest sugar option available), and adding a scoop to low-fat Greek yogurt is a great, protein filled way to start one's day.
  18. Hello, As my name suggests, I am still not sure about having weight loss surgery, although I am going through the program (I am on my 3rd month). As I follow the nutrition guidelines I'm realizing a scary thing--I am a seriously picky eater, so much so that I don't see a lot of options post surgery. I know that taste preferences change, but how much? Will I start liking foods I've hated my entire life? Or will I start hating the few foods I do like? I've been picky since I was a kid, and as I have been practicing my new eating guidelines for the past few months, things have not turned out well when I try new things (from stomach aches to just plain gagging the food right back up). So here's my problem: From the two-page list of proteins they gave me, I like eggs, beans, plain baked chicken, peanut butter, bland deli-type turkey, and plain roast beef. I've found that the "chew fifty times" rule has been troublesome for chicken and roast beef--they get stringy and hard to swallow, and my nutritionist says they may not be something I can eat post-surgery. I can wolf down a hamburger, but chewing it 50 times turns it into a gag-inducing crumble of meat, so they are out. I don't like steak or any other form of beef. I do like nuts but have been getting ill every time I eat them; too much fat, I think. No cheese cubes, cottage cheese, yogurt, or tofu (I have been trying for 30 years to get these down). No fish or other seafood or meats. I'm sensitive to salt and seemingly every kind of spice, so my attempts at making meals a bit less boring have been failing spectacularly. No salad dressings, marinades, or other kinds of sauces. Almost any kind of pre-made dinner tastes too salty to eat. Most fruits are too tart. How on earth am I going to get enough protein in after surgery? Right now I am supplementing with protein shakes while I'm figuring things out, but I am determined to live my life eating real food once I've fully recovered from surgery. And I'm really scared I won't be able to eat any foods.

What is your post op diet like?

Mine was 3 days clear liquid, a week of full liquids, 2 weeks of blended foods, and 2 weeks of soft foods. After the full liquids stage, I was 2-3 days early to every stage because I'm impatient. For what it's worth, I consume now less calories on solid foods (that includes gourmet foods from restaurants and snacks) than I did on blended foods. I was one of those who some foods felt incredibly easy to eat, and other foods truly showed me how restricted my sleeve is. Foods like yogurt, soups, any beverages including thick protein shakes, I could have endlessly, luckily I am not a fan of any of those things now ever since my post op diet.

    Any April 2018 Sleevers?!?!

You can start on soft foods tomorrow which is good! I find I get an large amount of protein when I mix Dannon light and for Greek Yogurt, 1 cup unsweetened almond milk and two scoops of my EAS protein powder. I’ve also added PB2 powder to my shakes for a little extra. I haven’t really felt hungry but I can tell when my body needs food and when it’s full. I also like the puréed Campbell’s Chunky soup. The sirloin and veggies has 17g protein. I had some tuna salad with boiled egg yesterday and it was very filling so you can start that tomorrow too! Some people have also started on the soft food stage at 10 days out.

    Any January 2018 Sleevers?

43 pounds is great! Don’t lose heart. For me I find premier protein shakes, Atkins bars, babybel lite cheese and Dannie Greek yogurt easy to always have on hand or in the car. For more meal foods, soup with extra chicken added, Trader Joe’s “zucchini fritters” basically an egg and vegetable frittata, grilled chicken and beans from my local Mexican place. Trader Joe’s has some good low carb ready foods. I hope this is helpful. Good luck!

    Any April 2018 Sleevers?!?!

OMG, I'm going to try that. My family eats ice cream for dessert every night almost and I've cheated with 2 teaspoons. Tonight I had a few teaspoons of yogurt. I went and got a Sam's membership because they had 12 packs for $17. I got chocolate, peaches and cream, caramel, and cookies and cream. But tomorrow a cookies and cream is going in the freezer. 23. When in doubt contact your dietician. 1 medium apple - sugars 19 carbs 25. Even if you made it on your own. Apples have sugars and carbs. Feel free to ignore the following is it does not apply to your program or food stage. I used dannon light n fit greek yogurt. 7 sugars 9 carbs with the added bonus of 12 grams protein.
  24. Yes and no. I came out of surgery in pain. After about 3 days I felt hungry but the protein drinks kept me satisfied. When it was time to eat soft foods...I was so scared lol. It took me about 3 hours to eat 1/4 cup of yogurt

    Any April surgery buddies

I was sleeved April 3rd, the taste buds changes quickly. I use to like the shakes and after surgery the vanilla was sickly sweet. Then they started to make me sick so I switched to powder...again sick. My doctor told me to switch to unflavored powder and sprinkle the protein in my greek yogurt, egg whites, and applesauce. So I get as close as I can to my protein intake daily. Monday I'm graduating to soft and squishy foods. I can find foods high in protein and meet my intake. Bye bye liquids
