  1. TSB, good luck to you. Def avoid the cigs. Why are you having to journal your food? Are they forcing you to diet while waiting for approval? My surgeon said once I did that initial weigh-in and approved by ins, it didn't matter what my weight did, the surgery was ON. I had so many "last suppers", you have no idea. I ate like CRAZY before I started my preop diet. For me, journaling is kin to HELL. I just can't/won't do it. Luckily the band will liberate you from that chore. Best of luck to you! Please keep posting throughout your journey. We want to know how you're getting along.

    Need some advice

Thanks for all the advice, I will take them in consideration. My pre-op diet is for two weeks (beginning 7/17), and I have to see my surgeon on 7/24, for pre-op instruction and to pay my deductible. The nurtristionist said that it would really look good if I could lose weight between now and then

    Extra skin?

Mpope There are many factors that go into the whole saggy skin - Your age - how long you have been over weight - DNA (this is the biggest factor) Think of a garbage bag put in a ten pound weight - leave it there for a short time then take it out - the bag goes back into shape Now take 80 lbs and leave the weights in the garbage back for a few years - take it out the bag will not go back into shape. Exercise works your muscles not your skin - building more muscle fills the space where the fat was and your skin - but it's not going to firm your skin, What's more important - saggy skin - or your health?? Saggy skin is not going to kill you but that fat will - put it into perspective.. I have grandma boobs (I am a Grandma :scared2:) but with proper bra they look good - I have a little flap on my tummy nothing spanxs doesn't take care of. My arms - will that's another story - but I just don't go sleeveless. Heck we don't live in Eden where we would be walking around naked - (thanks Eve :blushing:) We walk around clothed - so most of the flabby skin is covered up.. I feel 10 yrs younger - Look 100% better - and God willing have extended my life span - and this was the whole purpose of my getting the band. The better looks is secondary to me. There are always plastic surgeons - but insurance will not cover them unless it's medically necessary - (rashes under your apron if you have one) So the real question should be - What's Important to you... Your health or a little flabby skin??

    Extra skin?

There are several factors that will determine whether or not you might have sagging skin. The more weight you have to lose, the longer you have been overweight and the faster you lose will contribute to sagging or non sagging skin. I know that I will have extra skin because I have been this weight for about 10 years and I have 150 lbs to lose. I can tell that my tummy already sags even though I haven't lost a lot. For a long time I thought I couldn't handle the sag but I would rather have it than the fat. Exercise will help some people. Insurance will normally pay for the surgery to remove it if there is a medical reason. If it is for purely cosmetic reasons, they won't cover it.

    FaCiNg ThE tRuTh .....

It is ironic that I read your post tonight because I have been having the same issues as you. I have been approved for my surgery already but I have spent the last three nights sleepless because I am wondering what my friends and co workers will say when I start showing my weight loss. I decided not to tell everyone, just a few select people. A few months before I began the journey into the lap band process, I mentioned it to one of my closest friends who happen to be overweight also. She told me that I should go on Medifast and not go through such a drastic surgery to lose weight(Did I mention to you that about a year ago, she was denied by her insurance company for WLS)? I have just come to the realization after reading your post that I am going to do this for me and think positive thoughts and I cannot wait to start posting my weight loss success! I'm with you on being afraid of losing close friends, but why would they want you to be over weight and unhappy? You are doing this for yourself and your child. I am getting more excited about the surgery and the weight loss as I write this. I truly believe that once your friends begin to see how good you look and how happy you are, they will probably start to ask you questions about your weight loss and maybe look into the surgery themselves. I hope you get the call soon so you can start seeing the results of your weight loss in real instead of in your dreams. Hang in there and continue with the faith. :cursing:
  6. Ok I have faith that I am going to be receiving the "Call" any day now... So I have been proactively drinking 2 slim fast optima shakes and eating 1 meal a day.. Of course still drinking my Whylers lite and water.. This is my 3rd day and today I was kind of sad for no reason. I went to church and it was like pulling teeth for me to get into the service, but the best part of it is i realized what was going on because of all of the post that I have read. Now I have been waking up lately in the middle of the night not able to sleep because I can actually can see myself in my dreams so much smaller and healthier and actually lovin it. :tt1::tt1::tt1: One thing that really does scare me is that once I really really take control of my life again I feel that my so called friends will not want to hang out or even associate with me anymore..Now don't get me wrong they are overweight also but the diffrence between them and me is I am choosing to get healthy because I am tired of being unhappy with myself, and not always but sometimes thinking hey r they looking at me because if a Fine azz chick...lol or are they looking at me because they are like look at that fat azz chick..... They are fine as long as we go out to eat or have bar-b-que's in the summer and they see me getting just as large as they are they are cool..But 2 of them don't have kids and they don't understand that a 3-year old has energy and don't want to sit down and wait they want to go and play NOW.... and 1 does have a child and she is just plain old lazy.... I am so tired of spending more money than i have to on clothes. I truly am ready to step out of the box and go places that I have never been before meet new people make new friends for life and have more in common than yeah I can eat an entire foot long from sub way how about u? LOL:lol: (use to be able to...lol) So why am i feeling like this? It actually seems like when i start talking about loosing weight, working out and eating healthy they don't want to talk anymore or they are going to call me bk and never do...:cursing::confused:

    Approval But What If

Well Bella you are not the only one that has the what if's... But u know I will put it to u like this. What if u do loose the weight, and are able to do everything u have ever deamed of doing in life? What if u surpass your own expectation? Now playing the devil's advoicate...:tongue_smilie: what if u do eat to much? What if u don't loose the weight u really want to loose? What if others look at u as a failure? SO WHAT.. all u can do is dust your sholders off and start over and over and over until u get it right and start to see some positive changes. bottom line. Who cares what anyone says or thinks at this point. If you make your mind up that u want to do it for u... then u will.....:frown:
  8. I am 5 mos. out and my weight loss has slowed so much. For me I'm now thinking it won't be a huge issue at this point. I hope not. But my doctor did caution me about this too. I personally think the size might be a factor - size of boughie. I'm a 34 and often wish I could eat more, but the size I have seems to keep me from gaining and I am still slowly losing. But it is down to just 5 lbs a month now. I think I'll have more trouble getting to my goal than I thought.
  9. Hi Everyone! I've been browsing your forums for a week or so now to help me make my decision whether to go for the surgery or not, and I thought it was about time I introduced myself. If all goes well I am looking at being sleeved in early September, but there is just one question I have which I can't seem to find the answer to anywhere online... Once you reach your ideal weight how do you stop losing? I have seen a few people whose tickers are now showing underweight, and I know someone who lives near me who has had it done and is now painfully thin. Does this happen a lot? How do you stabilise your weight when you can only eat such small amounts? I have been underweight before as an aneorexic teenager and I looked terrible. I really don't want to end up there again :tongue_smilie: I hope someone can give some feedback. Thanks for taking the time to read my post. L x
  10. I also will be going to my pre-op appt tomorrow. I don't have that many questions but I did ask before the difference. My Dr told me that really it was a preferance and that sometimes that they use the bigger band for men. Or sometimes for really obese women that would need to lose weight like a man would. For instance. I am 28yrs old, 5'2" and weigh 230. I will be getting a 10 cc band. But for another women who was my age and height but weighs 430 she may get a 15cc band. Good Luck! Keep in touch!

Kaiser SoCal veterans help me the Orientation

OMGosh! YOU ARE HILARIOUS! HAHAHAHA! And sound totally like me!! They tell EVERYONE they may not be approved...I didn't really actually believe I got through until a year later (this past June) when I finally went to the seminar where we met with the surgeons, since they always repeated "you may not get approved" over and over and over. I'm not saying it's 100% for sure for everyone, but I think they just really want you to be serious about the classes, surgery etc. And by the way I took my weight watcher logs as well, and they didn't even look at them :-( ...but you should still take yours just in case lol. But seriously I think once you get this far, your good.

    Strange Questions????

You increase your calories until you find the right calories/activity level that helps you maintain the weight you want to be. I know that Mac had a hard time finding that balance; however, I think she's finally done it. You don't stay at 800 calories forever, once you get to goal, you'll increase your calorie intake as needed.

What do you think the doctor means

i think i t all depends on how quickly you gain proper restriction. im a little over 5 months out and have lost all but 15 pounds of my weight. but everyones band and body are different. there are people who get it after only a fill or two and others it takes a while for. but just because it takes you awhile to gain restriction dosent mean it wont happen. just ask restlessmonkey, it took her a long time to get to the right spot but she toughed it out and is now doing extremey well with her band. there can be a lot of trial and error involved in gaining restriction.( a definite drawback of the band) it also requires al ot of follow up care for fills. if thats something you are gonna have a hard time you might wanna weigh your other options before making a final surgery decision. good luck
  14. HI everyone. I have a question that I am hoping someone can help me with. Right now I am still doing all my pre-op appointments and do not have the insurance approval or surgery date yet. But I am wondering what would happen if after everything is all approved and the surgery date is set and I start the pre-op diet. What if I lose enough weight on the pre-op liquid diet that it drops my BMI below 35? Does this matter since everything has already been approved? Do they even take that weight into consideration? I am scared that it will happen and then I cant have the surgery. Has anyone either had this happen or heard of a situation like this? Any info would be appreciated. Jen

    HELP! Surgery is 3/13...

Ok. With the caveat that they are both good options... I have the lap band and I am glad I do. It comes in sizes and so my doc was able to fit me during surgery with the one that was the least traumatic to my stomach. I have the AP Large. I like the fact that I have 14 ccs to "play" with. I like the construction. The port is larger than the one with the realize band (I think) but as my surgeon said, in obese people, finding the port is a challenge (at the start, before we lose) and he said when I lost he'd cheerfully put in a low profile port for me...no big deal. I also don't like the thought of the port being clamped to my abdominal wall, and that's how the realize band's port is placed (I think). Lastly my surgeon uses the lap band because it's been in the USA the longest and it's the one he's familiar with. Having said all that, people who have the realize band also lose weight and thrive. I think it's like MP3 players...many different brands with small differences but they all play music!
  16. I went to the doc 10 days ago because my calf was bright red, swollen and hurting. Turns out I have a staph infection and am on 2 antibiotics. Well, I have another appointment this morning because it has gotten better but is not 100% gone. Now I have a rash on my leg and in my trunk area, a yeast infection and diarreha from the meds along with a constant headache from one of the meds. One of the worse things is that I'm eating more than usual because I get naseated if I don't have food in my tummy from the meds and I've gained 6 lbs since my visit with the surgeon a week ago. I'm also trying to eat 4 oz of yogurt 4x a day to help with the yeast. Grrr... I just hope this gets cleared so I can have my surgery in 3 weeks. I guess I should start a blog so I can rant on there...

  18. Hello! I had not had my lapband yet. I hope to have it done in August. I was wondering if others who have been banded or is planning to be, worried about excess skin? I desperately want to loss this weight I have been carrying around for years, but I then think that I would be unhappy with myself all over again if I have excess skin. My emotions are just all over the place........I guess.
  19. hello im new here. im in the process of getting the lap band procedure with Dr. Gomez at the IU Surgical Weight Management Center. 7/30 psych evaluation 8/05 consult with surgeon, dietician, and pre-op testing. I have a friend who works for Anthem, she said that Anthem is REALLY FAST at approving or denying requests. it can take anywhere from 24-72 hours!! Im excited and nervous at the same time! I went out and bought all of my pre-op stuff 2 weeks ago lol I really hope i dont get denied!
  20. Hi thanks for reply . Sounds like long process but still quicker . Has been 2 1/2 years through the process of being put forward for surgery. I was on a weight management with a dietician for the first year then Got referred for surgery and has been another year of another weight management plan , then talks about types of surgerys with othe patients , and this is the first appointment with sight of the ball starting roll forward but my last appointment at the hospital was 7 months ago , don't see the point of going to tests if I will wait another 7 months for a date or next appointment so will be good to find out or il guess I'll just find out on the day in September .
  21. Congratulations on your surgery hope. Was everything you thought it would be and do for you . ????And 22 and defiantly feel like an old lady just want a better quality of life and also scared of putting on more weight in between appointments .

New girl in town: Introductions and questions

LOL that is funny! i am doing good. I may be behind everyone who was in the same boot camp class I was in. I had the class then went on a 16 day vacation. I got back Sunday. Saw Maureen the Behaviorist on Monday and she indicated she would clear me on the next visit in in 4 weeks. Saw Rachel the NUT on Tues, She told me NOT to lose any more weight,or my BMI would be to low for surgery. ( how crazy is that I am 110 lbs over an ideal weight but can't lose any more?!) And I see Dr.Abeles for the 1st time next Friday! So its rolling along good. How are you doing?

    Denial question

Hopefully it wont even be an issue for you!! My first answer from United Healthcare was a big ol' no. I had submitted everything they requested but once it was all in they said that they have an unwritten requirement (was not in my print out of requirements and was never told to me in any of the 5,000 calls I must've made to them) the 5 year weight history. I submitted the extra info and was then told that they had closed my file and couldn't just re-open it. I immediatly called my dr in tears and he said he'd do a peer to peer review. Basically, it's him talking to someone on their end...sort of selling my case. I'm not sure what he said but it did do the trick. Like I said, hopefully you wont need to go any further with your case but if you have to, having the dr call himself seemed to really help! Good Luck to you!! Kristin
  24. I read a statistic that banded patients on an average, lose 55% of their excess body weight after 2 years. I've also read that gastric bypass patients have a window of opportunity to lose weight during an 18-24 month period. After that, the weight stops coming off. My question is this, can banded patients continue to lose weight after 2 years or does the weight loss stop like gastric bypass patients? I don't think I can go through surgery and accept a loss of 55% of my excess weight. Is there more hope than that? Thanks in advance if you can offer me some personal insight!

    On my way

They put me on vitamin D after my bloodwork also, my doc told me up to 85% of people are vitamin D deficant but just never get tested, the vitamin D you might be on awhile inless you get out more after the surgery or get enough in your daily vitamins after surgery. I only take 2 a week on Sunday and it bothers my tummy a little but not much. Sadly time goes slow.....i just got done my 6 month visits, still waiting on my date but approved by insurance. Take this time to try to get used to eating protein, taking a multi-vitamin and if you can lose some weight during your 6 month visits the doc recomends it, it shows the insurance co. you are serious about losing the weight......
