Is anyone else having blood sugar issues since your sleeve?
moonlitestarbrite replied to kitch101's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
i have never seen anyone who was told to stay under 25 grams of carbs a day. my paperwork, from a bariatric center of excellence, says that after 6 months you should be getting 120-150 grams of carbs from whole food sources. under 25 is really really low. my center recommends a high fiber meal plan for life after surgery, you cant do that on 25 grams of carbs... -

So welcome also @pugmom234. I know you said you're about the same age as Inc above here. @ J San may have seniority when it comes to surgery status but I guarantee there is NO ONE older than me active on BP, that's why I have appointed myself the Bariatric God/Grandmother. That said I must have been a case of arrested development because it took YEARS to decide to seek weight loss surgery. And now I am bravely marching forward toward an RnY bypass on September 5th. It will be 3 years in August since I started on this trek and my journey was not one you would wish to emulate. Many twists, many turns, roadblocks, quicksand of doubt, but Yippee Skippy it will be over very soon. With a pen name like yours you have got to be an animal lover, well I am owned by 2 female kittycats who allow me to live with them as long I provide enough food and adore them 23 hours of every day. I am allowed 1 hour a day total to go to the human litter box. And as you have noticed with your dogs each one has their own personality. Squeaky if she were human would be a cheerleader, bouncy, self-confident, she feels the whole world🌎loves and adores her, some days I think she needs kitty Ritalin. If you try reprimanding her, she looks over her shoulder like "Whatever" and resumes what you interupted. Now her sister Cassie, she would be class Secretary or a library aide. Much more subdued but extremely loyal, and when Squeaky isn't there to overshadow her, there is no one more loving. And the 2 of them complement different facets of my personality. Can you tell I am pussycat- whipped? Oh I admit it! If either of you have any questions please ask! I pride myself at being a pretty fair resource person but if I don't have an answer someone else on Bariatric Pal will. So Welcome again, please stay a long while, like mold we kinda grow on you!😝🌈😝❤

A local dr who started performing bariatric surgery 1 year ago (has done 50) started lap band surgery in March. The cost is $12,500 cash (my insurance won't pay). I think this is a good price but should I be concerned about the lack of experience. They all have to learn sometime - right? Any opinions are appreciated.

Facing an operation after your weight loss surgery
CowgirlJane replied to Dr. Adeyeri's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Magazine
This is a good article. Due to a family history of polyps I need to have a colonoscopy every 3 years. After my sleeve, I was scared of doing the prep stuff so i called my surgeon's office to ask about it. I found out, low and beyold, they do GI surgery and they do colonoscopies! I had so much peace of mind going back to my trusted Bariatric surgical practice for that! -
Everyone who had band removed??Insurance??
dishdiva replied to athykay's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
My insurance sent a denial letter for my lap band removal, calling it bariatric surgery. But, the letter also said pre-certification wasn't required for outpatient stays, which I was. So we're submitting and hoping fot the best. If they deny, I plan to fight until the bitter end because my health, and life, was being put at risk from my band-related complications. -

Ok, so this is still posing issues for me and i still need to know if anyone has a solution to this because it sounds like I should not just stop taking this medication. I should have explained originally that I am not taking this meds for blood pressure but a heart arrhythmia/palpitations that are pretty bad if I don’t take it. These won’t kill me but it wakes me up at night and sends me into a fight or flight response that is no good and keeps me from sleeping. I have asked the cardiologist and pharmacist and there just seems to be so much confusion about my options. I am finding it hard to believe I am the only bariatric patient that is on this drug and had to resolve this prior to surgery. Seems strange and hoping this larger pool of people can help me find somebody in my same position who can provide a solution! I have 3 weeks to figure this out but if I need to switch meds I sort of wanted to do that next week to give me time to adjust.

Has anyone used Dr. Scott Stowers (My Bariatric Solutions) in Decatur TX?
mtravel10 posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I've had my consultation with Dr. Stowers (via phone since I live out of state) and so far it has been a good experience. I'm wondering if anyone has gone to him for the sleeve? If so, what was your experience like? Any complications? For fellow sleevers that are a few years out, how has your progress been and are you maintaining? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!! -
Would you be willing to go to Victoria? There is a Center of Excellence for Bariatric surgery there at Citizens Medical Center. There is an entire wing of the hospital there devoted to bariatric surgery. I had mine done there and have no complaints what so ever. Dr. Craig Chang is my surgeon and my hero. He's wonderful and is CERTIFIED. Many doctors do bariatric surgery but are not certified in it. This hospital is also fully equipped and furnished with the bariatric patient in mind. Chairs, beds, gowns, pressure cuffs, etc. that actually FIT. The Center is incredible. If you can, run down there and take a tour. They are happy to do it. I highly recommend him, if you dont mind a little drive. I drive from Corpus Christi, and don't mind in the least to have top notch care and facilities. I'm doing great and have had minimal problems. Dr. Chang is very approachable and very caring.

Ok..I am a Quest bar junkie. Let me be clear about that. No more than one a day though for good reason. While a few posters are saying the Fiber numbers are inaccurate, I am here to tell you there is a good amount of fiber in them. How do I know? Probably because I went about a week without them and when I started eating again I spent a good amount of time visiting my bathroom! Yes, they ARE good for that! ( FYI to those with constipation issues) I have read online sources about impending lawsuits due to mislabeling. but I also read the response from the Quest brand CEO. He emphatically denies the allegations and will fight any lawsuit. ( For the record there has been talk of said lawsuit for some time, but no follow through as of yet) They have had their nutritional information evaluated from independent sources and the results are the same as the labeling. That being said they are sort of high in calories and carbs but low in sugar. The carbs are mostly from fiber, which to me is a good thing. ( They fall well under my bariatric team's guidelines for sugar intake) The calories may be high, but I take that into account with my daily totals. I am always rushed and cannot make time in the morning for a lean, Protein dense Breakfast. Therefore, Quest bars are my meal of choice. I purchase at GNC, have been for many months. They are always buy 3 get one free, with the occasional sale of buy two get one free. I find that better than buying by the case. Also, I like variety. I can pick and choose the flavors I want. While they do offer variety boxes, I prefer to make my own variety pack. ( also cheaper)

Bariatric Fusion Chewable Vitamin & Mineral Supplement
pamie40 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I haven't had my surgery yet (hopefully by end of month), but I met with my nutritionist for the final visit yesterday. She went over everything I would need to know for after surgery. She said I would need to take 2 Flintstone Complete Vitamins, Calcium Citrate with Vitamin D 3-4 times a day, Vitamin B-12 and Biotin daily. My sister had gastric bypass surgery last year and her doctor only has her taking fusion chewables 4 times a day. I looked at the bottle on line (www.bariatricchoice.com) and it seems to have everything that I was told to take. Does anyone else take Fusion? I would rather take just one thing than all that other stuff. -
How did you decide your goal weight?
justmel2003 replied to pik's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm very heavy right now, but tall - my starting weight is (currently) 373; my surgeon asked me what I wanted for my goal weight (possibly to feel me out about how realistic I am), I said 160. His reply was "let's shoot for 180 and negotiate from there," which I thought was a great answer. Given my age (46), height (5'8") and size I might have a hard time with the extra skin, etc. I visited Dr. Wolkodoff here in Denver, he's a PhD in exercise physiology and is very involved with pro sports medicine. He did an in-body scan to get an accurate picture of intracellular/extracellular Water, where my muscle is located, where I need to gain muscle, etc. It was actually surprising to hear that my lean body mass is currently 167, and he suggested a goal weight of 210 (adding the average 24%-ish body fat most women should have). He gave me a BMR (basal metabolic rate), and told me to gain 2lb muscle in each leg but that I had plenty of muscle in the upper body; he gave me some basic information and suggestions as to an exercise regimen. It was a great consult, and I'll be following up with him post-surgery at 1mo. 3mo. and 6mo. This is something i would suggest everyone do, not just bariatric patients, and I'll be bringing my 24-yr old daughter with me next time - she's not heavy but doesn't really exercise and I'd love for her to have an outside perspective on her body composition so she doesn't land in the same boat as me. My surgery is 7/21 - good luck to everyone on here, both pre- and post-surgery. Mel -
When I started my weight loss odyssey, I was doing so blind so to speak. The surgeons office I was seeing at the time, the scale didn't go past 550. So I was looking around and came across the site below. I purchased their XL-700 scale and have been using it since to get my weekly weigh in results. It's a great scale and has been a great help to me. I was able to see my weekly losses and gain a confidence boost each week seeing the weight go down. So if you're in the market for a scale this is a good company to look at. They have quite the variety of bariatric scales, and they're affordable. http://www.oldwillknottscales.com/obesity-bariatric-scales.html **I am NOT affiliated with the website.**

Acid Reflux Concerns - Oct. Sleeve Surgery
S@ssen@ch replied to JustKeepSwimming's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had GERD before sleeve surgery. In the past, I had some pretty bad bouts of it where it caused chest pain. I also had GERD pretty bad with the band. I'd also go long periods with nothing, so it was a mystery. When I started looking into another bariatric surgery, my surgeon cautioned me, but continued to perform pre-op testing. The doctor felt that my GERD was "situational", meaning that it was related to diet and obesity. So, we decided it was worth the risk, but he warned that there were no guarantees that I wouldn't have GERD after the sleeve. I had surgery on 4/10/18 and about 3 weeks afterwards, I started getting heartburn. I started on Nexium right away and the symptoms are well controlled with it. I wouldn't say that it's severe or "intractable" as my psych evaluator so kindly put it. It's just a little bit of heartburn and if I eat too late in the evening, I will wake with a sore throat (easily remedied by sleeping on an inclined bed). My advice, discuss with your doctor. Every person is different and every person will respond differently. -

My mother had weight loss surgery - Our relationnship?
Weighting2BeFree replied to Daughter2015's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
My mom and I have had some talks like this... i was honest and told her the things that i wish had been different as a kid, such as healthier eating and family exercise. But i also told her that i was an adult and could no longer blame them for my stuffing my face with oreos. Its always easier to blame someone else than take responsibility for your own actions. You need to think about your own relationship with food any why its there. For me i always sabotaged my diets. Why? Because if i was bigger i felt i knew who my friends were and i thought pe op le would expect less of me. Not healthy. I'm still working through that. And yeah coming to a bariatric forum and calling a size 16 "gross" was very insensitive. Many of us dream of the day we can shop in a regular size store. -
Really this many pills!?
DaisyAndSunshine replied to Veritas34's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I understand those are the guidelines are you. But does it mention exact doses of supplements you may need? If that's the case you can check out Bariatric multivitamins, and these more or less includes most that you may need. I take "1 bariatric multivitamin and Vit D3". B12 and all not needed since bariatric special takes care of it. Bariatric special also has the kind with extra "iron" if that's a requirement for you (Check out Bariatricpal once a day multivitamin, I consume Naturelo brand once a day kind). Even with calcium, if you try to consume more dairy, you may be able to cut down on the calcium supplements. I don't take any extra calcium since I consume a lot of yogurt, cheese and milk (Vegetarian diet). My nut stated as long as I am getting more than 1200mg a day of calcium, I don't have to take any extra supplements. The day I am lacking, I can take calcium citrate as needed. I know calcium supplements are about half of the pills for you. If you can't cut down on those, may be try the chewables ones, so it feels like you're having chocolate or something instead of swallowing gigantic pills. -
Just had Lap Band to RNY Revision...Antidepressant metabolism question...
Briswife15 replied to CyclicalLoser's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi, Missouri- Lee's Summit, yes, I'm quite upset and concerned! Thanks for your support, and the info you posted. My bariatric surgeon requires a psych evaluation and hopefully the psych he sends me to will be more encouraging and helpful than my personal psych. I have the mindset that I'm going to have the RNY, and get healthy finally (I have a lot of comorbidities). I don't want to be freaking out about possible medication problems. Hello, I just came back from my drs. today and he gave me kinda bad news. He is leaving the office he is with and is not sure if in his new position whether he will still do bariatric surgery. So what does this mean for me? It means that he is referring all of his patients to Dr. Brody. I have heard good things about Dr. Brody I am just use to Dr. Brodsky. I am really going to miss him. :D

I agree with others that some could be combined or changed: -Combine B vitamins, iron, and multivitamin into a single Bariatric vitamin. -Calcium with Vitamin D can be taken as a liquid, and also as chews (yum) For supplements only, I take 5 items a day (3 pills and 2 chews). Nice!

I just did the ultrasound, and they push REALLY hard on your ribcage area! Still think it's kind of odd I don't need an endoscopy as it seems everyone else has one pre-op. But, I trust my surgeon and my bariatric center!

Is there a Multivitamin and calcium citrate over the counter?
tdm7913 posted a topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
I today ran out of my vitamin starter pack from my Dr. I plan on ordering a package plan around the 5th of July (waiting for payday). I am not sure why or how I waited so long to get more. 🙄 So my problem is I need to get something that I can take for a week or two until my bariatric vitamins come in. Does anyone know how I might can find something? Thank You, Tracy (RNY gastric bypass 5/23/22) -
Anyone else use flinstones vitamins?
FluffySaysForkIt! replied to Taranurse 1's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Flintstones vitamins are not really optimal for bariatric patients. Try looking in the store here on this site or online for vitamins formulated for people who have had weight loss surgery. Some are once a day, some are two or more- depending on the formula. You will also need calcium citrate for sure and possibly others depending on the vitamin you select and your own personal needs. Talk to your surgeon for specifics on your case. Good Luck!
