this is gonna be miserable
isaviolinist replied to marmar's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I also had a 3 week pre-op diet and it wasn't as bad as I imagined. I had a kind of similar diet to yours - I had to do slim fast shakes, plus I had sodium-free clear broth, fat-free sugar-free pudding etc. The first few days were difficult. I stayed inside a lot because I was afraid if I went out I'd want to eat (I live in the middle of a city and when I walk out the door there is food calling to me EVERYWHERE lol). After the first 3-4 days, it wasn't a problem and it was SO encouraging to see the weight coming off so fast. That was my motivation. I also really didn't want any complications at all with my surgery (including waking up just to find out I wasn't able to get the band). I am glad I stuck with it, because my surgery went well, and I'm feeling great now! Good luck, you will do great!! -

You have to understand that this isnt a one shot surgery and I am "fixed" kind of thing. There are revisions, complications, appointments to adjust restriction.... point being its a lot of time, money and effort. A doctor is going to tell you that should plan on 50% of your excess weight loss with the band - so for you what is that like 35lbs? I am not sure its worth it for you. That said, and end to the yo-yo dieting might be. You also have to ask why your fat... Do you have portion control issues (I did) or do you eat all day long (I didn't). From what I have seen on here the band seems to work better for folks with portion issues. Also what do you eat? The band isn't going to help you make the right food choice - you will still have to do that on your own. I had never been the thin guy - but I am now thanks in part to my band. 296 with a bmi of 42 to 165 in a little over a year, but not without two additional surgeries. But still the best decision I ever made. Good luck -

I understand about being at the end of your rope, I have struggled for 20-30 years of my life dieting & exercising as a fat person. I have managed to yo yo between sizes 12-16 & weighing between 180-210 - That is high for a woman, but I managed to wear it well. UP until after I turned 40 2 years ago, i have been steadily gaining more weight & my exercising has been all but nil. Anyway, I think if you don't feel like yourself at 235, you should get this. The lap band is a tool to help you with portion control & it is permanent, NO more yo-yoing will happen if you use this tool correctly, and have the restriction at the perfect spot. I considered the lap band for quite a few years, and am finally getting it on October 19th, I should have gotten it years ago, when I was at a little lower weight, then I wouldn't be struggling right now. -
Ok, I am the new guy here. Let me tell you a bit about myself before I hear what you all have to say. Pre College weight was 165, I was athletic and had energy. Post college weight was 225. Weight as of 6 months ago was 246. I am currently down to 235 after dieting and trying to exercise. I believe I am a 165 man trapped in a 230+ pound body. I have been dieting and working out for almost 15 years as an overweight person. I feel bad about myself, my cholestral is high and currently using meds to fix. I can't run or do much exercise because the extra weight has caused planter faciatis, horribly painfull to walk. I am wanting to get the lap band surgery. I know many of you will say that I don't weigh enough or that I could do it on my own without surgery. I couldn't agree more. i have been trying to for years and I am at the end of my rope. When I look in the mirror I don't see myself but rather myself blown up like a ballon and I am tired of it. I am looking for your opinion on my situation, whether you agree with me or not, I want to hear it. I need a reality check. I have a beutiful wife, who is in shape and works out every day, who thinks I am crazy for wanting to do this but she will support me if this is something I want. I have two great kids that I am out of breath from just trying to teach them to ride a bike. Sad. Tell me about yourselves and if you were less than 65 pounds overweight tell me more about yourself and your surgery. I appreciate your help and opinions.

6mo diet offically started
Julia_N replied to lageil's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Good luck to you, Laurie. I, too, had to do a 6-month preop diet. I started mine in September 08, and had all the holidays, plus an anniversary and three birthdays (wait, are we the same person? :mad2:). I didn't have a set amount I had to lose. Mine was sort of strict in that I had 2 protein shakes and one small meal a day. Maybe yours isn't as severe. Everything was going pretty good until the holidays. I stopped losing, but didn't gain. Then I got pneumonia and lost a couple of months of dieting. Got back on track, so it ended up the end of July 09 for me to get surgery. I hope yours goes much more smoothly! I did lose almost 45 pounds preop, so that was a nice start. Best of luck to you in your journey! -

Hi everyone thanx for the support...Yesterday I went to my appointment. The nutritionist was very understanding and gave me helpful tips on how to be mindful of what I am eating. I was weighed (ugh) and I actually lost 7lbs!!! since last I was there. I then met with the surgeon who answered all of my questions and she said that I was looking at a late October early november date. YAY!! she also said to NOT gain one single pound and if I can lose more that would be great. I am sooo excited now. Best wishes to everyone Eyezchu -
Had Surgery on 12-18-09 and I can't Believe....
btrieger replied to Ice_Prince's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Congrats!! I know you don't mean 40 pounds since getting the band 12 days ago. Remember, the band is not losing the weight. YOU are working hard and the band is just there to help a little. Keep it up!! -
Hello! This is my first post. I am desperate for some advice. I began this journey in January. On my thirtieth birthday, with my first appointment of a six month program. In March, I screwed up and showed up a day late for my meeting. The people at the Weight Management Center said it wasn't a big deal, happens all the time. I had a medical visit that day and they told me to come in April for a make-up meeting. I finished the program, lost ten pounds and passed surgical review board. Then I received a denial letter in the mail from HighMark Blue Shield. The letter stated I had over lapping visits in April. Long story, short. The doctors office never faxed my March medical visit to HighMark. They corrected this yesterday. Any thoughts about how long I should hear something from HighMark? Should I file a personal appeal? Surgery is scheduled for August 15, so I am a bit panicked Any advice you can offer is much appreciated.

Hello everyone, I'm new to the board and haven't been banded yet so thought I'd introduce myself. My name's Amanda, I'm 28 years old, 5'1" (and 1/2. lol) and weigh about 225 lbs. I've struggled with my weight since I was a kid and have steadily been losing the battle since I've had my children. I've watched the seminar video a number of times and had an initial consultation with a banding place here in AZ last year. This is something I've been researching a lot the past couple of years and have made the decision that this is definitely what I want to do. I haven't started the approval process or found a surgeon yet. My husband (who also has a weight problem but is still iffy about this surgery and i'm not pressuring him...much ) has some connections so we're hoping to find the very best surgeon in the area. His insurance also just changed and while LAPBAND is still covered, the requirements have changed so we need to figure all that out again. I just wanted to tell everyone how much I've enjoyed reading through the forum and it really helped me to see that the choice I've made to pursue the band is really the right one. And once I'm banded (hopefully ) I'll be able to provide support to some of you. Hope everyone has a great weekend! Amanda Chomping at the bit to get started!

Anyone in and out same day?
BigLoser replied to BigLoser's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thank you all for responding. Dr said I can have surgery tomorrow if I want (not really, since I have to do the pre-surgery diet). After I had my son, I lost all my baby weight plus 9 lbs. LOL! Then I gained 10 back! My hasband is also overweight and I think he thinks we are fat and happy together. I have forced him to look at himself and that makes him mad. I feel awful for my children...I spend my weekends in front of tv and taking naps when my husband offers to let me. I want to take my kids to the park and on trips. We do nothing now as far as outdoor activity. I don't want my daughter to grow up thinking this is ok. Thanks again for the responses. I will keep you posted, but I am planning on scheduling my surgery for January 14th. -
Anyone in and out same day?
Gingin33 replied to BigLoser's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi Robin, welcome to the boards! I haven't had my sleeve yet but I'm scheduled to have it in 2 days. Needless to say, my nerves are a bit frazzled right now. I'm not sure about the out patient VSG but I'd say staying at least over night just to be safe. My husband was very set against me having this when we first talked about it. I've been overweight for 20 years. I used to be anti-WLS. Not for others, but for myself. I remember telling my husband probably 7-8 years ago when I would read about gastric bypass people, "Man! I would never do that. That's crazy". Well about 3 years ago is when I started to consider it for myself. I only looked into the lapband. I knew for me, I couldn't do the bypass. Anyway, I told my husband and he was like, "No way. You can do it on your own". So I agreed I would give it a real effort to do it on my own and I did. I lost 70 lbs in 2 years. Not the fastest loser or anything but I felt really good and thought I had this problem under control finally. But I was just kidding myself. I started to gain the weight back in the last 9 months and I've gained 50 lbs of it back. Just that fast! So I told my husband 3 months ago I wanted to have the VSG. He tried to scare me out of it. Especially going to Mexico. He was not being supportive at all. In fact he was really making me upset with some of the things he was saying to me. I finally sat him down and told him, "I'm doing this with or without your support. I love you and I need you to be by my side for this..." there was a bit more said, but you get the point. I basically told him the things he was saying to me were not nice and in fact I felt they were mean and if he loved me, he would want the best for me. Since then he's completely changed, at least outwordly towards me. He's supportive. He holds me the few times I broke down and cried in fear and assured me that everything will be okay. I think if you talk to your husband and tell him you are doing this for your health, maybe he will be more supportive. I mean, you can't eat cake and drink beer if you are dead from being obese. Ya know? Whatever happens, good luck to you. Sorry this post is so long its just that I can completely relate and i'm sure many others can as well. -
I had my pre-op appointment following my 3 hour nutrition class in the morning. I couldn't eat or drink all day because of a couple of tests they had to take, so I don't remember everything...just being extremely hungry and thirsty. From what I can remember, they took a few viles of blood, I met with a hospital nurse and she did an ekg and talked about weight loss surgery in general (she was certified in something related to bariatric surgery and had actually had it herself 8 years prior), I had my barium drink and they took pictures of my insides, I registered with the hospital for my stay, and I think that was all (except since I was self pay I also met with the finance lady to go over some things). It was a pretty smooth process and they kept just passing me off from person to person although there was sometimes a slight delay between things. I wish you a smooth easy day!

Had my pre-op appt. today...
deedee replied to LyndaRN's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My post-op program didn't say much about carbs except to keep them low. It did state things I should not eat initially and later on during the losing phase, but because the pre-op diet they had me on limited my carbs to 30 per day or less, that's what I continued in my initial post-op diet. I was only on clear liquids for 2 days and then full liquids for like 2 weeks. I then progressed to soft/mushy food that I stayed on for another month I believe. I'd second/third people's suggestion to talk with your surgeon/nutritionist. Ask your questions and get clarification until you're content with your plan (even if it deviates from their recommendations). I just feel that it's nice to have input from the professionals to help us make the best decisions as possible. As for the weight loss rate, it's so hard to guess these things before hand. I tended to be very conservative with my estimates so that I wouldn't be disappointed with the loss. This kept me from getting too disappointed and set myself up for failure. BUT, you know yourself best, and maybe this kind of thing wouldn't bother you too much. Good luck! -
Very Encouraging, thanks!

I am in my 4th year and maintaining a normal healthy weight for over 2 years. Chosing a lap band was one of the best decisions I ever made. I struggled with my decision band vs. bypass. There is a lot of information about this on my blog (see the link in my signature at the bottom of this post) The results for band vs. bypass at 3 years and beyond are on the lap-band manufacturers site as part of a welll controlled study. I also reference this study on my blog site. As band patients, we have to work harder early on, and we lose slower. It is really worth understanding what you need to do to work this tool, and honestly assessing what you will need to do to be successful. For me, most of the diets I ever tried worked, I just wasn't able to stay with them. For me, my lap band made all the difference. Good luck with your decision! -
Im a picker and a bordom eater how will the band work for me?
HappyMom replied to candy rain's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I too am a boredom eater. I do not yet have restriction (2nd fill tomorrow) and can eat pretty much anything and as much as I want. The only way that I am still losing weight is through determination and willpower. I am getting there, but this is still a learning process for me. I have been banded for 2.5 months and I still find myself grazing through the cupboards and fridge when I have nothing to do. I am not going to lie and tell you that the need to graze will instantly go away once you are banded. It is something that you have to work through....and it will be tough...I am still trying to get over it. Just being banded will not change this need to eat when bored. I am trying to fill my time with other things to take my mind off of that need to eat. As for the soda.....forget about it. You will have to give it up. I find that my new vice is iced tea. I REALLY want to drink soda, but I have not had one sip since surgery. My surgeon was adamant that his patients not drink any carbonation of any kind. It is hard to get over not being able to drink soda when I go out to eat. I don't have it in the house anymore so I am not tempted at home. I do remember how good that cold fizzy feeling was on my tongue. It is something that I haven't gotten over yet. Whoo...now I want a soda! You can do it if you just accept that you can't eat like you used to and be ready to make changes. My best advice is to attend support meetings, chat with others that have the band, and maybe seek counseling support if you are having a tough time of it. You will find that "mind" hunger is really daunting and will take some time to get over. I really wish you good luck! I have faith that all of us can be good band patients....that is if I can now get the thought of a soda out of my brain! -
What a horrible comment to say. . . that was totally unprofessional! I was sleeved by the most sweetest physician ever here in San Antonio. . the office staff is very professional and they will call you back regarding your questions. . . but to answer your question myself, after i had the surgery i DID NOT have any headaches regarding hunger again. . .you won't really experience hunger the way you do now, it's more like pressure, but that comes after the swelling and stuff is over. . . in the first 1 1/2 weeks i lost 32 lbs and then at 7 weeks i had lost 53 lbs. . .i'll weigh in only at the doctor appts and have another appt on the 16th. I know that the weight loss has slowed down drastically but my attitude toward it is whatever! I look really good at the weight i'm at right now so whatever happens happens. . .good luck in your journey and if your interested in more information on my doctor just let me know, he does have his own website. . .

Came and went. I had orientation with So Cal Kaiser today. So much info and well worth it. I have all the paperwork to fill out and fax tomorrow morning to the center. Hopefully I can get into the June 12 week class, for there are some slots still open. So, it is 12 weeks of classes, 10% weight loss, do all labs and complete other things as well. I am ready. I already began my walking, watching what I eat and so on. I hope everyone is doing well and had a great weekend. If anyone has any questions about KAISER please don't hesitate to ask. I went to the Bellflower facility. Private message me. Good night

3rd day pre op failing and may cancel op
LUCK replied to DALITEDESIGNS's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Stick to your diet and don't cancel if you don't have to. It is so much easier than you think. You need more discipline for the pre-op than you will after the surgery. I am 2 years and 7 months out and still have maintained my weight loss and know it was the best thing I ever did. I just ate a bag of cheese nips and I did have a Jr. Whopper yesterdy (I ate the whole thing) but I eat healthy too. Just know you will be able to have whatever you want in small quantities and your stomach doesn't know the difference. The depression comes from not being able to eat everything you love because food has been all of our best friends probably. It is going to be so easy you are going to wonder what you were freaking out about.. If everyone could handle the pre-op diet perfectly then none of us would have ever been in the shape we were in to need the weight loss surgery, right? You are going to be so much happier which means a better mother for your kids... -

LeighaMason replied to babyk's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The only time I can think of that I need to gain weight is when I go scuba diving. When I scuba dive I have to use these little weights that slip into my pockets to make me sink, a pound in each front pocket and 2 pounds in each back pocket. Plus the ones that slip into the ankle straps that keep my ankles from from floating up, I think they hold at least a 3 pounds each. I rent them at the scuba shop. -
Ok so I have been waiting to get my first appointment and I just got a call from the medical center saying that my BMI is too low for being 5'9. Well then I went to the doctor to get measured and I am actually 5'8, which means I have to gain 5 pounds for my BMI to be 40. I am feeling discouraged and am scared I still won't be accepted. Anyone else have this problem and eneded up getting banded?

Just want to get comfortable :( *CPAP VENT*
PSJ71 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello all, I am looking so forward to being banded and losing weight! I am fortunate enough not to have a lot of comorbidities except sleep apnea and my BMI. I just got my CPAP machine on the 22nd and this will be my third night wearing it and I am so sleep deprived from it. I know if I could just get comfortable, as I am a side/tummy sleeper, sort of on my tummy, but mainly on my side, I might get a good nights' sleep. But, I just cannot get comfy. I chose a face mask because I tend to be an open-mouth sleeper. So, last night, I tried to sleep on my side, but I woke up a couple of times because I was leaking air at the side of my cheek. So, I opted to sleep on my back and ended up with a crick in my neck, which was bad. I do have 30 days to return the mask for another one if this one doesn't turn out to be successful. Anyone have any suggestions that has sleep apnea and CPAP? Thank you for listening.
