    July 2023 buddies

That is fortunate. I'm a two-week liquid diet before and after surgery. But I'll do it, I'm just glad to finally get this going. Origami Paddlers sound wonderful! Going to the ocean... I can't imagine how encouraging that must be. And fun! Enjoy the journey!
  2. i used to time my bites in the early months. if the timer in my watch went off and i didnt want to eat, i'd set it again and see if felt like food in the next interval (the length of the timer depended how far along post op i was) if i still didn't want to eat after 3 consecutive times the timer went off, i called DONE and put the food away. would make another attempt at in a couple hours. outside of water sips the first week post op, i didn't force myself to put any food nor drink i don't want to in my mouth. i still don't.
  3. Hi. My name is Lee Ann and like many others seems like I’ve been on a diet for the majority of my life. It’s been a constant battle. At one point in my life I weighed over 400 lbs and I was able to lose and get back some of my confidence. In 2010 I had a major car accident when a driver ran a light. And I became disabled because of the injuries that caused. With the injuries I was unable to get around like I once did and then some of the medications I was on added weight and my weight issues truly started getting me depressed so I decided to go through with gastric surgery. So about 6 years ago I started the process. Frustrating because I was having to restart 3 times because of either the scheduling or not having a dr appointment for 6 months in a row either because of how I was feeling or because the doctor was booked. Seemed like I wasn’t ever going to complete it. Then finally 4 years ago I had the gastric sleeve surgery and at the beginning problems started. I was so sick and my stitches started to open and I received no support from the doctors office and then the pandemic hit and my calls and emails went unanswered for 2-1/2 years. So when we moved so I could help my mom with her everyday life I looked into seeing a different gastric doctor. I’m still getting sick all most everyday and night plus the weight is coming back and I don’t understand how. I’m not sitting around eating just whatever I want. I am trying to get more food in but it’s hard when I hardly ever feel hungry. So after talking with my doctor about everything we’ve decided to go through with getting the gastric bypass. I’m hoping this will correct the issues and hopefully it’s soon.

    JUNE SURGERY BUDDIES

Hi all! I had surgery on 6/13 sleeve to bypass revision. I was struggling with the liquid diet and I had some fish (cod & salmon) in small portions but only 10/11 days post op. I feel an aching pain in my left side all of a sudden but am passing stool so I dont think a blockage. I didnt lose any weight on my 2 week marker, I remained the same. Did I damage something? Also having a hard time knowing when I am full. Good luck to everyone out there

    May 2023 surgeries

Hello, any insight , help or advise needed.. it has been 1 month and half since i had my GS and its been a severe struggle.. multi trips to the ER, I was put back in the hospital for over a week recently, and now back in hospital and possible a transfer to a long term care facility.. I have not been able to eat or drink since my surgery May 8th.. anything that i do put in my mouth and swallow returns violently. I have had a PICC line with TPN in for 2.5 weeks, this is the only this keeping me alive right now, I don't want this to be my life.. has anyone out experienced anything similar to this? if so pls give me some advise . they have don all kinds of scans, xrays and scopes looking for cause, but all looks normal.

    Mounjaro side effects

Yep, sounds like every side effect I’ve read about. It’s something I worry about: not eating & losing weight only because you feel too sick not because you are making better food choices & establishing better habits. And what happens when you stop the medication? Will you be able to continue to eat the much lower calorie intake needed to maintain your lower weight? My question is were you stalled or had you reached your set point - the weight your body is happiest at? It’s always much harder to lose below & maintain a weight that is lower than your set point. Your body will keep taking you back to that weight. Not everyone loses all the weight they may want to lose. The average weight loss for sleeve or bypass is about 65% of the weight to be lost to put you in a healthier weight range. From the numbers you gave you had already exceeded that average which is something to celebrate. Your choice of course but talk to your prescribing doctor about how to manage the side effects & the what happens after you stop taking the medication.

    Moving After Surgery

They’re all different. I saw mine at two weeks, a month, two months then 3 months. Not long after I reached goal (6 months) I transitioned to his colleague for my follow ups & had three monthly appointments. At my three year mark it became 6 monthly. In my fifth year now & it’s still twice a year. I have the feeling it may end this year though. My program of visits seems to be quite unusual though. It’s a good idea to find someone to continue to monitor your progress close to your new home (& to find a good dietician). I agree with getting a referral too which will help open the door to the new doctor. Hope your move goes smoothly.

    Regrets

I’m 6 weeks out. And was able to eat loaded mashed potatoes. Only about 4 tablespoons. I regret it now. No dumping syndrome nothing. Just guilt. Worried that I will be able to just eat anything like normal. 😑

    Regrets

I was able to chug water by about 3 months out, so don't give up. It will get better.
  10. I got on it bc I was stalled for 9 months. And that’s not necessarily true. I eat right and I still couldn’t lose more. I wanted it to help with the last few lbs. it’s pretty common. And I increased it cuz I didn’t lose for 2 weeks of the 4 week intro on 2.5mg so we tried the 5 and it’s just been absolute hell. I’m scared to even do the lower dose.

Can I start taking Ibuprofen again ?

When I had my sleeve done, I was told nothing but Tylenol for the first 8 weeks, then after that, only as needed and not everyday. Now that I'm about to have my revision from sleeve to bypass, I was told never again. Only Tylenol from here on out. No Ibuprofen, no Aspirin, nothing.
  12. Hello all. I’m needing some advice or help. I had the sleeve December 21 and had lost 80 lbs. I still had 10-15 to get to my goals so I started mounjaro in may. I’ve done great so far and have lost 12 lbs! We increased my dose to 5mg on Friday; and I’ve been an absolute mess. My body feels insanely exhausted. Walking up stairs I’m huffing and puffing. I can’t workout. I’m exhausted. My anxiety is through the roof. I also am getting married next month as well as moving 3 days after the wedding. I know I have a lot going on and I’ve been truly ok with not being overwhelmed. Friday we increased the dose and I’ve just felt so odd. My body feels like it’s a million lbs heavy and is so hard to do anything cuz it’s so heavy. I feel nauseous sometimes and most foods if not all foods make me feel repulsed. Nothing sounds good. Literally nothing. I’m barely eating. It’s been bad. I just don’t know if this is typical with increasing doses and if there’s anything I can do to feel better? I’m deff decreasing back to 2.5 or even stopping completely. I don’t wanna risk feeling this way. I’ve been just hysterically crying with anxiety and body weakness all day and yesterday. Does anyone have anything similar they’ve experienced??? Thank you!!!
  13. Hello! Do any of you have any delicious recipes you'd like to share for the upcoming holiday? I'm supposed to bring a dish or a side or a dessert to a big get together and looking for bariatric friendly recipes! I'm post op and at 6 weeks, my plan allows me to try anything now. Thanks all!

Hi, @alliepow! Thanks for sharing! Week 1 down, that's the hardest one, so you're gonna rock the rest!
  15. I’m two months and 2 weeks only lost 21 pounds… my weight before surgery was 179 180 pounds. Weight goal is 125 pounds. I’m worry at this point 21 pounds almost 3 months and eating less than 1000 calories a day and working out 3-4 a week
  16. I never dealt with a lot of pain pre-op but when I did, Aleve seemed to really knock it out for me. I will miss it. Now I take Tylenol/acetaminophen if needed to avoid getting any ulcers from NSAIDS. Sounds permanent. Now I am dealing with a different kind of pain almost 3 months out from Gastric Bypass. I noticed it all last week and still with me today. My bones ache. Not my muscles. My bones. My next follow-up appointment is on July 12th.
  17. snacks: crunchy veggies, cheese, beef jerky? hair loss: mine started at 3 months post and stopped around 6 months post. at around 18 months post, all the "new" hair that started sprouting up when hair loss stopped were the same length as my "old" almost-shoulder length hair (i had cut off all my hair into a pixie around 3 months). by 3 years post op my hair was about under-boob length and u would've never known i suffered serious hair loss. in fact i actually think its thicker and healthier now (plus it grew in kinda wavy, which i love). over-eating: now based on your description of the kinds of foods and amounts if it u eat in a typical day in your post, i kinda think you may be underestimating the cals you note u are consuming? without seeing the amounts and actual food, what you describe seems like it would add up to much more than 1200 cals a day? maybe you can go over your food logs with your nutritionist and see if they can help you identify areas to re-visit?
  18. 10 months ago I had my sleeve (with a hernia repair) done… to be honest I had expected to loose more weigh fast than I have but I’m very pleased with my progress so far. I’ve had LOTS of long stalls (weeks at a time) along the way … and I did manage to loose 57 pounds before my surgery. My highest weight was 382… surgery day I weighed 325… this morning I weighed 247. It’s been nearly 25 years since I have seen this weight! It’s taking me a while, but I’m getting there… I still have a way to go, but I can’t be mad about loosing 135 pounds (78 since my surgery). About the hunger… for me, I notice when I’m not drinking enough I feel “hungry”. It’s more about hydration (for me) than hunger. If I stay hydrated - I don’t seem to get those hunger feelings. Stick to your plan and track your intake (food and water) … it really does help. Best of luck.

    My Gastric Sleeve Journey

Congrats on your success and reaching your mini goal! That sounds like a great idea. I’ll be honest, I’m hopeful to be around the 100lbs lost mark by Halloween. It’s a pretty big goal but I figure I’m already down almost 40lbs, so 60lbs in 4 months should be doable. I’m excited for the future, which if you asked me two weeks ago, I was nervous and apprehensive, lol.
  20. I had my surgery in another city, had to fly out. All my appointments have been virtual. I had 1 week post op, 2 weeks post op, and then every 3 months up until a year. I can reach out to them at any time though, and I have support meetings 3 times a week also on Zoom.
  21. While the decreased vitamin and mineral absorption after gastric bypass is very well known and researched, not very much can be found about various drugs absorption or antibiotics absorption. I did a bit of research on this topic since I know UTIs are a concern especially for women. It is interesting to see that some antibiotics absorb as low as 37% while others absorb at 100%. Please see below some articles on this subject. https://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/754391 https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32314257/ https://www.jabfm.org/content/jabfp/20/3/310.full.pdf https://www.drugs.com/article/antibiotics-for-uti.html

    My Gastric Sleeve Journey

You'll probably continue to lose a crazy amount these first 2 weeks, then you'll probably stall for 2 or so weeks once you reintroduce food. Totally par for the course so don't panic. Drinking also becomes much easier quite quickly for most of us. I can drink pretty much as I did pre surgery now. I also found warmer liquids easier to drink so see how that feels on your tummy if you're still experiencing discomfort. Funny thing is now I prefer ice cold!

    JUNE SURGERY BUDDIES

I've got you beat age wise. I'll be 58 in August, lol. The complications have resolved, but I am soooo tired. All I do is sleep. I go back for my 2 week check up the 27th. Hoping I can move onto egg salad and refried beans. I'm not really hungry, I just feel weak and think I need some food.
  25. Does anyone have a Bariatric counselor they’d recommend, online preferably? I’m four weeks out and struggling with the mental barrier of not being able to turn to food to deal with emotions.
