  1. I just got a call from my best friend, I've know her since we were 16. 27 years now. Her mother died this morning. She'd been sick for a while with lung problems, went into the hospital on Monday. Yesterday she was doing a little better, but took a bad turn. My friend lost her father about 10 years ago and we've talked a bit about being an "orphan" even as adults. It hasn't yet hit me that I've lost someone I loved, I've been focusing on how my friend and her family are. It will soon I know.

    So Sloooow...argh!

I am in the same boat. I'm three weeks out tomorrow. I lost 15 pounds pre-op, another 10 in the first week and a half, and I've been gaining and losing the next 3 ever since. I haven't even moved on from strained liquids yet- not til tomorrow, so I know it's not over eating. I struggle with the Protein (mixed without ice or anything - too thick per Dr. - I can barely tolerated any I've tried). I'm about to think I'm going to be that 1% who never loses more than 20-25 lbs no matter what they do!
  3. This is common for the largest incision where the surgeon removes your stomach. A larger part of the muscle has to be cut than the smaller ports for the laparoscopic instruments. It happened to me too. I found putting ice on it worked better than pain meds for me. I iced it 10 minutes every hour until it felt better.

Thank you, I agree with luckyinlove. I am having surgery 4-28-10 and vacillate daily on whether I have made the right decision. You have confirmed that I have!
  5. I don't know yet. I am self pay and I will learn more when I see the NP in about 10 days. If they truly charge that much for self pay, probably not. I'm glad to hear you're doing well!

    Vent

Vent... having a difficult time getting bariatric doc office to submit to insurance. I did a 6 month nutritional program through my former insurance, gave release to doc office (still haven't requested it). I also did 10 months of Weight watchers from august 2016 - may 2017 and even had doctor visits in august, October, April, (and several others) where my weight was recorded and even nutrition discussed - though the visits were not specifically for that. I have talked to my current insurance several times and they are very much encouraging me to have my doc office submit for approval. Especially now since my medical tests revealed a hiatal hernia and gerd (i knew I had gerd) and that sometimes a waiver is given. However, the person at my doc office is being a bit snippy about turning it in for approval because she thinks the people I talked to at my insurance are wrong. I am trying to get them to submit but agh. (they also still have to request my ekg results since hospital was not theirs and get the online bariatric psych eval place to actually send my approval results). A bit frustrated. Just in case I started the 6 month nutrition visits through my doc back on the 6th

    Inability to throw up?

Considering how much I ended up throwing up toward the end of having my lap band, this sounds great! I don't want to throw up, I HATE throwing up. If I were to mess up, lesson learned for next time. Let that pain that you're going through for 10+ minutes be a reminder for next time.

    Acne prone skin..

For acne there's are to really only two things that I would reccommend based on the research. Either benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. Everything else is window dressing. Salicylic acid works better for me benzoyl peroxide (eg proactive) works better for others. Sal acid cleans out the pore and will exfoliate your dry flaky skin, Benz deals with any infection you've got. I'd find creams with at least 2% sal. Acid or 10% Benz and very little else's and try those. Google Paula Begoun. She rates products for their ability to perform based on ingredients, not brand names. Her acne section is also very, very educational. Good luck!

I have been a runner for many years thru being thin to being overweight/obese and still ran. It took me about 6 mmonths to run a mile without stopping. I would walk 5 miles/day once my body got use to the walking I had to challenge it more so I started jogging. I could only jog a 10-20 steps at a time, then I increased a bit more each time and really pushed myself. I constantly set goals and reached them. I LOVE running and my next goal is to run a 10 minute mile once I reach that my next goal is to run a 9 minute mile. My advise is start out slow and steady, you don't want to push too hard then you will end up with a injury, take baby steps and good luck
  10. Make a commitment to know as much as you can before surgery. I took 2 years to get to that point and I don't regret it. It's been a good 10 years since I've wore some of my old clothes and it's a great feeling. 10 for you is definitely possible. tmf
  11. The Harvard Biggest Loser study pretty much confirmed this: whenever you fight your body, it becomes more efficient at using calories, lowering your caloric need to maintain your weight. AKA: ignore hunger at your own risk. I'd love to see some data on the people that maintain long-term (like 10+ years). I bet they've been diligent at keeping their weight stable - not fighting it down. If you asked me to choose between being 20 lbs heavier than I am now, but then be guaranteed to keep that forever, or stay here just below 200 lbs but with a big task of transitioning into maintenance ahead, I'd take the 20 lbs any day. I feel pretty in sync with my mental and physical side of all this, I'm just so mindful of not putting myself on the path to regain, which I think starts with the mental prison that ignoring hunger is.

    Thrown through a loop

I felt the same way. I had to jump through so many rings of fire to finally get my surgery that I almost convinced myself that it was a sign NOT to do it. I even thought, maybe I won’t survive this one it was so bad everything they made me go through. I felt like I was on staff making calls making sure people were on top of THEIR job. To the point that after I received my surgery date, they said … You know you need to see a cardiologist (I’m hypertensive, but my heart is great). When I went there 15 days before my surgery he was insisting on MORE tests. I just finally broke down crying. I said my goodness, are you serious? It’s a sign! But lo’ and behold, I recieved a call a little less than two weeks before my surgery date (11/24) and was told if I would mind coming in the next day (11/12). I said with all my nervousness, I WILL BE THERE! 10 days post op, I am doing well through the Grace of God and those appointments the cardioligist wanted to me do … canceled Stay positive, and your husband is 100% right. Have to work hard for what you want, and it is worth it! Keep your head up, you are on your way to healthiness and longevity

    Gas.... and flying

Hit the send button too soon. It was weeks before the gas made any noise. I was used to just releasing it without noise or smell. THEN I took my 10 yo grandchild out or her birthday. Felt some pressure and let it go. Wouldn't you know, this time it had noise and lots of it. Everyone in the restaurant turned to me and of course my grandchild was in tears laughing!

From the album: My Journey So Far

  15. Hi Everybody! I live in the Northern suburbs of Minneapolis, Minnesota. I had my surgery on 6-23-11 by Dr. Jeffrey Baker at Unity Hospital. He works out of Baker Bariatrics. He is a very skilled surgeon who has done many procedures and is really nice too! I highly recommend him. Plus my insurance covered him so that was a bonus! I am 6 weeks out and have lost 20 pounds so far (i had lost 20 before the surgery) so am down 40 pounds so far. Started at 243- at 203 this week. I had a 'mini stall' at week 4, but only lasted about 10 days. Now moving down again. Overall, I have had no complications or problems that weren't expected. I have not had any nausea or vomiting since the surgery. My incisions healed well (can hardly see them now). I consider myself very lucky!! I am 47, married, no kids except for my 9 year old Beagle, Brewster. Tonight I start in a beginning running class training for a 5K race in October. I have already been thru my closet and was able to give 2 big bags to the Lupus Foundation- I have lost 2 sizes already!

Help! I need a new surgeon asap!

Congratulations on choosing Dr. Kurian -- I just saw her today and love her. She greeted me with a big hug and kiss and was so incredibly attentive. (I'm 10 days post-op now). I managed to be scheduled for surgery with her 3 weeks after my consult. Her surgery days are Tuesdays and Thursdays.

    Hungry

:wink2::biggrin:I feel like I eat too much too. But the times when I do best are the times when I 1. eat very slowly (eat as if food doesn't interest me that much--even though normally I would wolf it down!) 2. really concentrate on the tast of my food WHILE I am eating slowly(if you are enjoying conversation with a friend, then put your fork down while he/she is talking and listen, talk back if necessary, then pick your fork back up and resume eating, slowly. 3. eat 6 small meals of mainly protein (truly this doees work) a ahlf a cup of egg beaters with a piece of FF cheese melted on it for breakfast ( Ieat one piece of WW toast with it)...a protein shake about 10:30...tuna made with mustard and old bay wrapped in a lettuce leaf for lunch (I was suprised at how good this was!!) and a SF pudding... either another protein shake or about 6 shaved slices of turkey deli select wrapped in a piece of cheese, or a cottage cheese cup with applesauce...then your dinner of baked chicken breast and veggie, or broiled seafood and veggie, then exercise then another high protein snack in the evening..about every three hours . That't what MY surgeon reccommended, and it does work for me....just a suggestion.
  19. I told my kids (7, 10 &13) that I was having surgery to loose weight so that I would have more energy to play with them. I really emphasized the "more energy" and "healthier" side of things rather than just the weight loss. It seemed to work well for them. We went to church tonight for the first time since surgery 3 weeks ago. My middle son said one of his friends asked where he had been and he told him "my mom had surgery so we had to stay home so she could rest." Being a 10 yr old boy his friend asked what kind of surgery and my son told him that it was surgery so I would have more energy. I thought that was a pretty good answer for a 10 year old.
  20. Hi! I have a 4.5 and 6-year old. I didn't tell them anything in advance, because I knew they would be upset about mommy going to the hospital. I also didn't feel like they could understand, much less need to be burdened with, such an adult issue. My husband travels on business sometimes, so we just told them I had an appointment and would be staying at a hotel overnight. After I returned from the hospital, I did have to tell them I had "owies" on my belly so they wouldn't jump on me. The incisions looked so good, they really didn't think anything of it. I wouldn't go into detail about the procedure with even a 10-year old, other than maybe saying the doctor saw something in your belly that needed to be fixed. It's just kind of an abstract concept. My friends can't even understand it! You can certainly get away with just telling your students you went on vacation or something. They'll never know the difference. Wishing you much success!

    Frustrated & discouraged

Hi! My name is nancy i was banded almost 11 months ago (9-13-07) i have only lost 18lbs as of this date. I have had 10 fills in 10 months since surgery. I have no restriction or maybe very little for only a few days. I have a 4cc band and filled 4cc still no restriction. I have kept a food journal for 2 weeks as per my nutritionist and she said the quality for food was fine but the amount i should not be able to eat at one time(like pre-band). I am an x-ray tech. And have taken alot of pictures of my abdomen because if i didn't feel the port i would actually think i had no band placed.i also drank baruim and baruim laced food and watched it go down to see if it gets hung up on the band but it doesn't. I also had an ugi on the record and the radiologist said that the band isn;t working properly because it is not restricting anything. I went to my dr. Appt in june and the nurse practioner said that she looked at the disc and everything is fine i just need another fill,so i was filled to 4.5cc in my 4cc band and i could not even swallow water so she pulled .3 out. I did feel some restriction for about 4-5 days now nothing i can eat anything ,nothing is a problem. I do have another dr. Appt. On aug 5 with the doctor so hopefully i will get some answers ?leak ?malfunctional band wish me luck
  22. I am so glad you are doing well.....however you body is still healing....and even if you feel like joggin 10 miles don't....so leave those boxes alone for a while...no heavy lifting is one of the things that should be on your release sheet. Check with your Dr. who knows your physical abilities better than we do... You dont want to set yourself back....so please be careful.. Good luck in your journey.....we are fairly close together in time
  23. My original date of June 17 had to be cancelled because I failed my stress test, which in turn caused the surgery to be postponed. Everything’s OK now & I officially have a new date! July 22nd awaits! I’m excited, nervous & pumped all at once. The countdown begins!
  24. Gallstones after weight loss is a very common occurrence. I lost 124 pounds many years ago and developed gallstones. Had my gallbladder removed back in 1983 -- when they cut you from your sternum to your appendix (and took that out while they were there). Today's surgery is nothing by comparison. On the average, the surgery I had meant 10 days in the hospital and out of work 4-6 weeks. That was the average, and I did much better but THAT compared to outpatient? Just go get it taken care of and feel sooooo much better. Wishing you a quick recovery.
