    Confused about carbs

Try adding some fruit or healthier carbs and see how you feel...and how your weight loss is. I also read an article that said that drinking low-fat chocolate milk after a weight training workout led to more muscle gains than by drinking sport drinks. Very few physicians have any training in nutrition. They do what the other guy does. I venture to say that those who propose a low-carb diet have no idea if it works better than higher or moderate carb diets for weight loss in bariatric patients--why? There are no studies showing which diet is best for bariatric patients. Read this article, it's very enlightening FINDINGS; Diet and Fat: A Severe Case Of Mistaken Consensus - New York Times
  2. Hi James This is a great place for information. I have no regrets at all about getting my lapband. It was the best thing I ever did. I started with a 54" waist now... 30" waist. Tom, Toronto Banded July 6 06 Wt. Loss; 160 lbs
  3. I am 10 weeks post-op (surgery date: October 3rd) and am struggling with staying focused. Now that I am able to eat restriction free I have been trying lots of things. I'm not indulging in foods that are bad for me (i.e. junk); however, I really am not measuring the quantity. I just eat until I am full and stop. I have only seen a 34 pound weight loss on the scale, which I know averages out to be 3.4 pounds a week but I have always been a slow loser when it comes to weight loss. Any tips from the veterans to navigate this journey we call being sleeved?

    Onederland

lady WooHoo on becoming one of the latest and greatest new members of "onederland" never, ever, never compare your weight loss/time period to anyone elses in sleeveland people have been shot for less the expression on the board is.............. "the one thing we have in common is that we're all different" the "average"/good amount of weight loss in a month (per Nielson's poll) is 10lbs dropping 29 lbs in 6 weeks in NOT slow terrific, terrific trust me!!!!! would i lie to you its great to see that you are losing inches by the way your clothes feel/fit but....you might want to measure yourself today, and again in 2-3 weeks etc keep records of those inches all over these #s are especially nice to see when you might not have lost any weight in a while/stalled - but your inches are dropping you are doing great keep up the good work for the rest of your healthier, happier, longer life kathy congrats
  5. Hello All! After a grueling seven month process I have finally been granted a surgery date of...July 15! Two more months of waiting. Luckily, I've gotten really good at waiting. My journey started last October when my insurance (Kaiser) began covering weight loss surgery. I took a ten-week class titled "mastering weight management The class was like a slower version of weight watchers meetings (of which I've participated in at least five times over the last 20 years). After the class I had to wait several weeks for, wait for it...another class! In the mean time I had a sleep study and practiced tracking food/exercise. After the beginning of 2013 things started to move forward. I met with the social worker and nutritionist, had a series of blood tests and an ultra sound and now finally, yesterday, I met my surgeon. I'm excited to have a date set and my 72 day countdown is on! In the next 72 days I plan on losing even more weight (down about 35 pounds so far) and possible starting a new exercise routine. Does anyone have any ideas of things I can do with all this time? What should I be getting ready? What skills should I be perfecting? Thanks in advance!
  6. When does the hair start growing back? I'm 10 months post op.

    ? about fills/plateau

Are u eating 'slider' foods? Any junk foods like ice cream or high calorie drinks? Potato chips? Breads? I cant wait to get from my current 6.5 to at least 8cc's in my 10cc band hoping 8cc's will give me that restriction to finally see a significant weight loss. Just hoping & praying my anticipation isnt for nothing.
  8. I was sleved Oct 10th and have the same weight loss and am doing what you are. However I am 65 and expect to loose slower- Im loosing inches and do water exercises 3x a week. I struggle with drinking all that water- I know its important. Did you know that instead of the fat flushing out of your body that it is being reabsorbed in your blood and organs if you dont drink all that water?

    Breast Augmentation- too soon?

Too soon.... When you say "breasts augmented", I assume you mean implants. However, most people after weightloss will also require a breast lift in addition to implants. This is because your breasts will likely sag a little as you lose weight - breast implants alone will only make them bigger, and will not correct the sagging. What you will probably need is called an augmentation mastopexy (lift + implants). The specifics will really depend on how your breasts react to your weight loss. If you want to see a PS, then go ahead...it is never to early to have a consultation, but I suspect he/she will tell you to wait until you are closer to goal. If he/she tells you to go ahead and have it now, without even mentioning that there would be a high liklihood of needing a revisional surgery (and having to pay for it), then I would find another PS immediately.
  10. I'm about to turn 50 and I'm the biggest I've ever been and will only get bigger when menapause hits I've done the weight loss centers and the pills just make me feel horrible. I've even tried WW and so far nothing seems to be working. I have high blood pressure, sleep apnea and extremely low metabolism. My BMI is well over 35 and I need/want to loose around 50#'s. Is the lapband procedure something I could/should have done??? Not even sure what the specifics are to having this procedure.

  12. Hey everyone, I think I just need a bit of reassurance from you pros who've been doing this for longer. I'm almost at day 45 since my surgery, and the scale has just stopped moving. I was right at 300 when I had my surgery (down almost 40 pounds by myself), and I lost about 25 pounds in two weeks afterward. I stopped losing weight, but I calmed myself (with the help of the advice on this board) that it was temporary, my body just needed time to adapt to that quick and much of a loss, that this was permanent and the weight would continue to come off. It's been about three weeks since then though, and the scale hasn't moved at all. I fluctuate between 275 and 270 and it's refusing to move any lower. I think my clothes are getting better, and I am still losing inches, but the scale...the scale!! I'm worried that I'm sabotaging myself somehow. Maybe I'm eating too much or too often, maybe I'm not getting enough Protein in, maybe I'm just doing it all wrong. At my last check-up, my surgeon told me to not live and die by the scale and I'm trying not to. I think I would be much more zen about it if I saw SOME change, even a little. Anyone out there that can sympathize and tell me that I'm just acting silly and dramatic?

    Will the scale ever move?!?

First thing to do - don't panic. Stressing can stop weight loss (something to do with the chemicals it sends whistling round your body) so take deep breaths and relax. 45 days out makes it unlikely that you are eating too many calories (unless you are eating stuff you know you shouldn't be or grazing all day long). So, at this stage, don't agonise over calories and looking to find fault with yourself and what you are doing. Stalls happen, irrespective of what we do. Your body has been through a huge shock and change, it sometimes needs time to reflect and regroup. If you are losing inches, the scale will follow eventually. I had a stall of just over four weeks and, despite wanting to change everything, I stuck to getting the right amount of Protein and Fluid in, exercising and resisting weighing myself every day, which was just torture every time the scale hadn't moved. So stick with getting enough protein, drink what you've been told to and keep moving. It sometimes can feel like being sleeved is a battle of wills between you and your body but it isn't - it's a partnership and sometimes you can't make it go any quicker than it wants... The weight loss will restart, just hang in there :-)))

    shaving....it gets easier?

Waxing was painful the first couple of times, but you get used to it over time. It was painful the first time I plucked my eyebrows, but that's no problem now. I love getting waxed. The slight sting is almost like therapy... and I love the smoothness and how my hair grows in finer and softer now. Try it!
  15. I am very excited! Due to a myriad of health issues over the last 3 months, I've already had most of the pre-op testing required. I just have to get with my PCP to have the records sent over to the surgeon. I live in MD, and will be using Dr. Kim at Harford Memorial Hospital in Havre de Grace. I am starting my three-month supervised weight loss with the team. They want me to lose 5% of my weight by surgery. I started following as many of their recommendations as I could yesterday, and by last night I was totally freaking out. My relationship with food is so strong, and so TWISTED. The thing is, I really and truly love healthy food, and always get my nutrients in via food, but a) my portion control sucks, and I also eat a lot of crap. I am going to have to do this one day at a time, making changes slowly but surely. In order to keep myself from eating all night long, I had to go to sleep at 7pm. My poor boyfriend is going to be lonely in the evenings until I can manage staying awake in the evening without eating. He's super supportive, and has himself lost over 100lbs without surgery. I can't believe I am probably going to be approved for an early October surgery. I have a feeling the time is going to fly!
  16. Hi Everyone. My journey started in 1996 with my gastric bypass. I'm now 18 years post-op and have maintained a 130 pound weight loss. I have had 2 pregnancies post-op. My kids are now 15 & 16 years old. My surgery was open and lapriscopy wasn't an option then. I've dealt with issues of birth control and anemia. I had no setbacks until my 10 year anniversary when I developed an internal strangulation hernia that required surgical correction. I also had an upper Gi bleed this past January. Other than those items, my surgery enabled me to have the lifestyle and become the wife and mother I had only dreamed of previously. I keep within a 10 pound window for maintenance. It gets harder to keep within that window as I get older; however it is achievable by keeping to the same rules used for weight loss to maintain. We all need to be mindful of our Protein, limit the carbs, exercise and keep hydrated. I think having support is so important and I'm greatful to have found this site.
  17. Well I survived the first week. When I went the the hospital last Wednesday, I was excited, nervous and scared, all at once. I weighed in with a loss of 21 pounds loss from the liquid diet that I followed religiously for 9 days prior. It was so hard. I started on Memorial Day, got extremely sick that night. But I didn't give up , I stuck with it and succeeded that first step. Going through with the surgery was the second major step. Now one to step three losing the weight. The hardest part is figuring this all out. I had surgery Wednesday June 4th morning, and went home Friday afternooon. I had a normal recovery period in the hospital. Typical stomach pain, tired, nauseous feeing, and no appitite. I was put an stage two of the eating process. Creamed soups, yogurts, milk, etc. I started out ok but got very constipated. Realizing that I wasn't straining my creamed soups and my yogurt had fruit pieces, small but they all were there. I also wasn't taking the stool softener. All of which caused the constipation. Yuck, I was not happy. But I learned and moved on. I have lost only six pounds since Ive been home, and worried that I should be losing faster. I get stomach pains when I eat. They come on and go quickly. Im am wondering why this happens and how long it will last. I go see the doctor for my first post op check up next week. Well thats is for now . I think Ill update on a weekly basis.
  18. I am only 4 months out of my LB and I have been having gall bladder symptoms for about a month. I have a semi-severe pain in my right side especially after I eat a "large" meal (which is hardly large). Deep breaths hurt and last night for several hours, I had pain in the middle of my back. I have an ultrasound scheduled for this Friday. I'm annoyed and feeling negative because I've been doing good with my weight loss - not too fast, concentrating on eating a healthy diet, exercising 7 hours a week, etc. And now this. Sigh.
  19. MY surgery is this Wednesday and I feel like everything I'm doing will be the last time I'm doping it. Even writing MSG's to folks I'm extra nice cause I don't the last thing I say to be mediocre...lol, kinda silly isn't it. But I've been dreaming about death and found a dead mouse in the back lane and dead bird in my front yard...I'm scared I'll be lost in the OR, loose my life to blood loss or complications...sigh'

    Nutrition Consult

Hello, For me all of my nutrition appointments (my insurance required 6) were rather short and straight to the point. My first appointment went like this: Before my nutritionist came in I was weighed and had my blood pressure checked. Then I had to write down everything I had eaten and had to drink the day before. Then she came in and she told me my BMI and asked me what my goals were (was I looking for a certain weight or looking to fit in a certain size). I was asked about my general eating habits, questions like: How often do you eat out? What kind of Snacks do you prefer? How often do you drink sodas? Do you eat a lot of bread and Pasta? She also asked me about exercise and previous weight loss attempts. Based on my answers to her questions, she went on to tell me how the band would affect my life. She also showed me on a plate using fake food, what my portions would look like after being banded. We set a weight loss goal for my six month diet (mine was 10lbs) and we set a goal for the first month regarding my eating habits. I believe my first goal was to record everything I ate in a journal so I could get a grasp on what I was really consuming. My 1st appointment lasted about 45 minutes, but the other 5 only lasted about 20. Each time I would have to write down what I ate the day before, write down the type of exercise I was doing and how often, write a new goal for the month and then we would talk about whether I reached my goal from the previous appointment and how I planned to reach the new goal that I had chosen I hope this helps you. Good luck!

    Notice for Work!

Hi, I have a desk job... my doc said 2-4 weeks.. I chose to take the 4 weeks "just in case" and I was glad I did, but I also was fortuneate enough that the sleeve was "medical" so I completed all my work ppwk in advance, doc signatures, etc.. so I was good to go on the 4 weeks. Please remember if you take 2 or 4 you are still going to have bouts with fatique....I remember being so extremely tired after work I basically would come home, drink a protien shake and go to bed... I was exhausted. It took me until about the 3 month mark before I got more energy... It all works out in the end! My only regret with my work is I had wished I would not have told people the truth, that I was having weight loss surgery... I wish I would have said gall bladder or ulcer repair, something like that... Because at my work there are people that totally look at me differently now, like I am a lesser person for choosing surgery. I also had one co-worker with an attitude about having to pick up my work because of weight loss surgery.. she actually said it was very selfish of me to choose this surgery when I am needed at work.. UGH... 20 YEARS overweight and planned the timing just perfectly to give my coworker grief!! I think not... anyway, in hindsight I would not have told a sole at work about my real intention / surgery.. I totally would have told them gall bladder or stomach ulcer... Good luck

    Fluctuating Weight?

First of all Good Job on your weight loss...we were banded on the same day and I have only lost 15lbs to date...But I too go up and down up and down that's why I weigh only every monday in the morning after my first bathroom visit and disregard any other times I may weigh....Good Job again :blushing:
  23. Update: Now DOUBLE the loss I was able to do without my sleeve. It truly was one of the best decisions of my life.
  24. I'm on the eve of my surgery and very concerned if I'm doing the right thing. My family does not want me to get the sleeve, they just want me to get the band out. I'll have one last discussion with my surgeon in the morning and make my final decision. The band will come out at a minimum. Our plan is to do the band to sleeve in one surgery, however if there are any problems, then we'll do the sleeve in a later surgery. I've lost 9 pounds on the pre-op diet and went from 245 to 236 lbs. I'm happy about that, but I know if I don't get the sleeve and start eating normal foods and overeating again, the weight will come back on quickly. I have a beautiful 4 month old son that I have to think about and am still breast feeding. Surgery scares the heck out of me right now since I have a baby. I haven't had any breastmilk supply issues this past week on the liquid diet, so I'm hoping I won't have any problems after the surgery. My surgeon said he can make the sleeve on the larger size so I can get in more fluids. I guess I'm just scared and the fact my parents and husband are all telling me that I shouldn't be having the sleeve done isn't helping. My biggest issue with weight loss is falling off the wagon due to overeating from physical hunger. I'll get really hungry (physical), then just binge. I know when I'm head hungry and can control that. But overeating after physical hunger is a different story. I've been so hungry this past week and if it weren't for having surgery, I would have eaten regular foods due to the hunger. The lap band has been such a disappointment as I'm always hungry with it and have not had any real restriction. I have never felt "full" when I had the fills. The only sensation I had with it was difficulty swallowing. It was a total waste. Well, we'll see what happens in the morning. I have to go pack my hospital bag! Any support you can provide will be much appreciated!
  25. First time ever- a couple of coworkers noticed my weight loss and ask how I Did it. What's the magic pill!! No I just had my stomach amputated so I could no longer shove food constantly in my big fat lying face.but I paid for it, so suck my balls
