    Keto

Damn i thought i replied but it never up loaded...https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/protein-for-vegans-vegetariansPea protein, hemp hearts, tofu, chia, etc. Not single source. Its going to cost you calorically but it can be done. Usually you have to plan very well and make your own foods. Example if you make falafel you can add ground hemp hearts, chia seeds, flax, pea protein, spices, etc. Stir fry mushrooms with fluffed buckwheat and quinoa. Eat with a hummus spread. You will work harder (especially if you don't like legumes) but its possible. I have come to the very real conclusion that my time with animal protein is almost over, but I'm interested in keto, I stopped by to see if I could do it for a short burst then try to vegetarian/vegan keto for a burst to break through anticipated plateaus VSG2017 HW 249 SW 238 CW 167

Vegan or not Vegan? That is the question.

My diet isn't entirely meat free, but I do eat a lot of fruit, nuts, seeds, beans, tofu, etc. My advice: Work with a dietitian who has done bariatric diet follow up for people eating a vegan or vegetarian diet. it's a bit of a special niche...but if you look, you'll find someone good. Make some calls. Avoid regular pastas....but give the protein pastas a try. They're excellent!
  3. As for me - it is over 8 years sleeved for me now and things haven't really changed in the last year. I am down a little but still at least 14lbs over where I stabilised, which was another 14lbs where I set a goal weight! So, all in all I would still like to get rid of at least 28lbs! I've had to buy new clothes - that was really depressing! And I have zero energy to work out. School life is really stressful and my anxiety levels are ever increasing whereas my sleep is decreasing! This leaves me in a constant state of exhaustion. This is the last week in school before the summer holidays. We are going away Tuesday for 3 weeks and as much as I am looking forward to it I am dreading the whole swimming costume-wearing malarkey! It is gonna be three weeks of 'faking it, 'til I make it!' Plus a lot of sleeping and rest. On a plus note, I went back to being vegetarian last Sept and I have now fully transitioned to a vegan way of eating. This has been a really powerful move for me, not only for ethical reasons but for health reasons too. I initially looked into it to see if it would help my menopause - I have really been suffering with the symptoms for nearly 10 years and it is really getting me down (plus I am sure it has contributed to my weight gain). So, I thought I would see if changing my diet to a more plant based/vegan way would help. Although, I still get major hot flushes, they have generally decreased. My headaches/migraines have also improved. But, the biggest change is the digestion of my food. I have always been constipated - all my life - and since I removed dairy, especially cow's milk, I am no longer constipated! This has made me really hopeful that my gut is now working better and therefore my metabolic rate is improving. With time (and rest from work) I am hoping that my body will keep responding and I will feel more energised and therefore move more. I refuse to give up! I refuse to accept this weight that I am currently. I will keep on keeping on!
  4. Kids are teens and I was vegan then vegetarian then flexible, I think they welcomed the break lol, we should meet up !!! (For some reason I can't tag anyone )

    VEGAN after WLS

Vegan is a long term goal for me , I was vegan for 1.5 years about 8 years ago and it was unsustainable for me so I turned vegetarian and was that way for the last decade prior to surgery. This time when I get to vegan I want it to be alittle more forgiving and flexible and sustainable so I'm not rushing , plus surgically speaking I want to make sure I don't hurt my progress first

    VEGAN after WLS

I also consider myself a flexible vegetarian.

    VEGAN after WLS

Working towards it, but as you may imagine it takes lots of time and planning especially to become a lowish carb whole food vegan So I'm a flexible vegetarian

    Appetite back with a vengance!

Clearly..... not a great attitude. I see why you are frustrated, but saying that you can't eat meat....is not indicative of whether you will succeed. There are vegetarians and vegans that have WLS and get their protein from plant based foods or soy meat. Have you tried other protein high foods besides meat? A few that comes to mind: - Greek Yogurt -Cottage Cheese -Refried Beans Your hunger isn't real hunger though. It's head hunger. Until you get a grip on your mind... you won't succeed. Like I mentioned in my first post. You have to find a replacement for boredom, stress, whatever makes you eat. Go for a walk, scrub the kitchen floor, dance in your underwear.
  9. Hi again everyone! So far I cannot get the chewable vitamins down. I’ve been doing flintstones to compensate at least a little, but I know they’re not enough. I just can’t keep the Celebrate down and I was told I can’t do capsules until six months out. So, have any of you tried the patches and had lab work done after? We’re the labs ok? If you haven’t done patches, have you tried the Tespo thing? Did that work for you? I’m just really trying to get my vitamins. I haven’t been able to keep any meat down 2 months after surgery, but I love the isopure protein powder. Guess I’m going vegetarian. :) Anyway, I found a way around the protein issue, so now I’m looking for a solution to the vitamin issue. Any help is greatly appreciated. 10. I was a vegetarian prior to WLS and became a meateterian (lol) after but currently transitioning back to plant based with the support of my team
  11. Has anyone had to switch to a vegetarian lifestyle after getting their wls?

    Vegan/Vegetarian Products

Banza chickpea pasta! I’m not anything even remotely resembling vegetarian and I love it!
  13. So, I am not a vegetarian or a vegan, however, since my surgery I have been eating a lot more soy meats, and trying plant based protein replacements. I have found that I love Gardein brand. My newest love is called the "Neat " made by Atlantic Natural Foods Company, I put the link below to their "meatless" options. They also carry a line called Loma Linda Blue, which has some interesting options as well. I'm personally choosing this style of eating a few days a week to naturally lower my cholesterol, but I know that many of you choose this for a lifestyle. Feel free to share your favorite products! http://www.atlanticnaturalfoods.com/brand/neat/ http://www.atlanticnaturalfoods.com/brand/loma-linda/
  14. Look around for a nutritionist who does vegetarian patients after sleeve. They're out there and will have more flexibility:) Best wishes and congrats on your progress!
  15. My nutritionist and doctor are 100% on board with my diet. I'm not on my own...everything is monitored and approved. When I was selecting a bariatric surgery team, one of my criteria was to find a team that did not stress keto-only and had more flexability with people who prefer vegetarian diets. My research university serves an international population that has a lot of culturally vegan and vegetarian people.....so my dietitians are more experienced with adapting a healthy bariatric diet to different diets. Both my doc and nutritionist are enthusiastic about my choice of Mayo Clinic Diet, (they also like Mediterranean, DASH and Japanese...which are similar)...so we have a lot of options:) I think it's important to get professional input, support and help through the process.
  16. I should mention that a big part of the Mayo Clinic Diet, is a commitment to being active. See how the center of the food triangle is physical activity? My group and my diet...both stress daily physical activity. I get 12,000 steps a day and "work out" for an hour three times a week. My work out might be mowing lawns, sweating to the oldies dance videos, water aerobics in a heated therapy pool, or trampoline exercise class at Sky Zone, and lately I've been riding horses again:) I like to mix it up and keep it enjoyable. But yeah, I walk about six miles a day and get at least three hours of cardio a week. Being active...is so freaking important for building that hot burning furnace metabolism:) Sorry to ramble. I know my diet is extremely different than most of what you read here. But if you check out the vegetarian board here, you'll see I'm not as unique as all that:) Lotta ways to get there. Mine isn't the fastest, but it works for me, and I've been really pleased:)
  17. Oh man...I have many times. Essentially, I follow the Mayo Clinic Diet at 1200 calories. I lean vegetarian, but do eat meat on occasion. You can read a ton about it online. Here's the general feel for it, though:

    Question for sleevers

I went with pink, red, white beans earlier on simply because they were softer. I (my sleeve) still prefers them now. I'm 7.5 months post op I was around 250 at consultation, 238 surgery day, currently 170 Hidden sugars are everywhere so carefully read food labels (f-ing yogurt) I could only stomach the protein shakes in coffee (premier caramel) or tea (premier peaches and cream ) THE BEST HACK EVER I use myfitnesspal which accounts for all macros if you load it properly. Takes the guess work out of everything for me and I can generate a report for my NUT I'm still trying to find the ideal brand of vitamins too after I spilled an entire new jar of gummies while cleaning. I'm trying Walmart's organic vegetarian multi vitamins next.

    Question for sleevers

I’m popping back to soft foods and liquids for the next 2 weeks because when I eat meat, I vomit it right back up. I’m not opposed to becoming a vegetarian, and at this point it seems very appealing. I’m going to try black beans and cottage cheese again tomorrow. Wish me luck! :) Do you mind if I ask when your surgery was and how successful you have been? I don’t mean to pry and you definitely don’t have to answer if you’d prefer not to. I’m getting the water in now no problem but the protein is killing me and I’m basically failing there. Tomorrow I’m going to look for some smoothie recipes. I have the unjury powder (it says unflavored but I can definitely taste and smell it so I’ll probably be heading to GNC tomorrow to pick up a flavored one.) I hadn’t really thought about the added sugars surprisingly. I think that will be very difficult since it seems like there’s some form of added sugar in everything these days. I’ve bought some benefiber single serving packets but I’ve been using stool softeners at the moment because thing have been really backed up. Sorry for the TMI. And my celebrate chewies don’t stay down so I’m taking the flintstones vitamins for the moment. I know that’s not good, but my surgeon told me that’s better than nothing and I could stay on them for the first two months. Do you track you micros and macros? Or are you mainly concerned with the protein, carbs, fluid and fat? And you can bet I’m going to keep trying to get in touch with the temp NUT. If I have to, I’ll march myself right down to the office in the hopes that she’ll be there!

    Question for sleevers

Reach out to your bariatric team first for clarity, they may have ALL the answers you are looking for. The plans vary so greatly you may end up with more questions and no answers that will help YOU Currently I'm at: 60+ protein ,>80 carbs, ~45 fats I for example am very carbon sensitive so I tried to focus solely on protein earlier on but I also don't tolerate meat for long periods so I have to rotate food groups, then I said to my team I just want to be a vegetarian again and they said OK. I was expecting great resistance. My new rules are similar to old ones but I work with the NUT to make sure in not stunting my progress either.
  21. I’m 12 days post op and my follow up appointment isn’t until Thursday - my surgery was moved up two days from the original date so we kept the post op appts - and now I’m wishing they’d moved those up. I’m struggling - I don’t think it’s hunger necessarily but I’m tired of protein shakes. I’m having a hard time getting them down. My list says broth only so I’m not even sure I can do soups like the butternut squash one. I’ve gotten a few Campbell’s soups, vegetarian vegetable and chicken wonton, and have been straining the broth to drink - it’s been a nice change. But I can’t wait to chew something. Or at least have a different flavor.

Some good vegetarian early foods: Refried beans with lowfat cheese Cottage cheese Split pea soup Hummus Soft tofu Greek yogurt Sugar free oatmeal with protein powder stirred in
  23. Since last 3 days there is no change in my weight , has been stuck at 112.5kg fluctuates between 112.8 to 112.1 I feel heart broken. I would love to see changes on the scale.is it just me or happens with everyone??? Another doubt I have i don't feel like eating at all. I have to force myself to drink something as i have to keep myself hydrated. Drinking water is the toughest thing i have done post-op. I am vegetarian and i want to know more options of what all I can start eating now. Sent from my SM-N950W using BariatricPal mobile app
  24. Transitioning back to vegetarian and just wanted to try a different type of protein shake besides whey based (I will be ovo lacto pescatarian for a while still until I make it as close to vegan as possible) Which brand does anyone recommend to add to coffee like creamer? This is the only way I drink the shake so far... Thanks!

    Taking the plunge

I'm considering giving up my protein bar habit...real food is smarter this far out. I still want to keep caramel premier protein around because I love it in my coffee in the morning. I only drink about half a shake a day, so it's not a huge part of my diet. I lean heavily in the veggie protien direction. I eat a lot of vegan meat substitute...soy and mycoprotien. I eat a lot of beans and mushrooms and whole grain goodness. Pea protien with Brown rice protien is my go-to for adding protein to baked goods and soups. Never met a bowl of fancy oatmeal I didn't like...or a bowl of refried beans with sexy toppings. Yum. And...ya know...some vegetarian chili dumped on a baked potato is a fine thing:) Gotta say, I'm a sucker for protein muffins. Mostly, I make my own with oats, pea and brown rice protien powder...but sometimes I buy the Flapjacked Mighty Muffins that Bariatric Pal sells...and OMG...they taste incredibly naughty and they're not. Really good. I love me some protein pasta, too. Chock full of chickpeas, lentils and fava beany goodness. I think I actually prefer protein pasta to regular white pasta now. Trying to work more fermented foods into my diet to get the probiotics working for me. I do still love the occasional steak salad, chicken stir fry or pork chop....but it's a twice a week kinda thing. And I do love salmon on the grill lately. So good that way! I marinate it a little lemon pepper, olive oil, soy sauce and splenda brown sugar. Comes off the grill crispy and so so so delicious. Congrats on working toward vegan:) Your heart, circulatory system and kidneys thank you.
