    Any October 2021 Surgeries?

    I am finishing day 1 of liquid diet and it wasn’t so bad. I am kind of use to sugar free and artificially sweetners because I have done Keto on and off for awhile. I am to drink 3 shakes and 2 protein bars and unlimited broth, sugar free jello and popsicles. Oh and a boiled egg if needed. Why boiled egg I don’t know but I ate it! I haven’t felt deprived but I will prolly get bored soon. Just hoping the next 13 go by quickly! Good luck all!
  2. Peanut butter protein yogurt. I am not a fan of yogurt, but every so often I buy it. I found a vanilla keto yogurt. It’s the consistency you of the Greek yogurts. I decided to try mixing it with peanut butter protein powder! It’s sooo good and helps with protein intake. It tastes like a dessert!
  3. I was like you. I started with a BMI just barely over 35, had tried keto, crossfit 6x a week, intermittent fasting. I dropped weight, but it was impossible for me to stay consistent. I am a month out from sleeve surgery and have lost a little over 30 lbs. Even in this month alone, there would have been several times when I would have fallen off a diet due to "life" but the sleeve has kept me on track.   4. I understand that low ebb feeling. I have lost all motivation to restart a new diet program because I know in the end it's the same things I was doing before and it just didn't work. I also tried really strict keto and exercised a ton, like ran 4K every day, biked to work, lifted super heavy weights for a woman. I also did fasting and actually enjoyed it but it just didn't stick when life got mixed up with my routine. I just can't go through it again with that fear of failure. I need something much more permanent and long-term. A tool I could fall back on when life gets too stressful. Maybe the sleeve will be like a hard stop to overeating and provide a real-time reminder that overeating does not feel good. I hope your appointment with the surgeon goes well! I also have a consultation on October 19th. I'm not sure yet if it will be me trying to convince her or her trying to convince me lol I have a lot of concerns about reflux and want to avoid any revision surgeries. Do you have a set of questions to ask the surgeon?
  5. I'm a 34 year old woman with a current weight of 260 height is 5'6. I have lost and gained over 60lbs at least 3 times. I was never able to maintain the weightloss for longer than 6-8 months at a time. I have done strict Keto, Fasting, and intense exercise routines multiple times in my life. I was successful in losing weight every time so it wasn't that I couldn't commit myself or apply weightloss techniques that work for me. I would just simply go back to overeating every time. I really don't know if fasting will work for me longterm if I add coaching. I certainly want it to work but I have small children and a husband who likes to eat big hearty meals so cooking and shopping for food are part of my regular daily activities. I find when I'm fasting it is really difficult to cook a hot delicious meal that I simply cannot even taste. So I end up cooking a quick meal for my family which is not the healthiest. I will keep exploring the surgery option. I really appreciate all of the feedback so far. The new ideas like searching for my own bariatric therapist and using my family doctor to do my bloodwork after surgery has given me some hope that I can do this. 😊

    How to lose regain 2+ years post vsg

    One underrated tip I was given: Add more fiber. I was told to try to get at least the daily value (28g I think). I was nowhere close to it. So now I use clear unflavored fiber supplements that I can add to drinks because getting enough fiber from food alone can be challenging.   7. Hi. I have had a lap band for 11 and half years. I lost around 100 lbs with it but it turned me into a bulimic because I could eat whatever I wanted and just "regurgitate" it back up. It was a bad cycle to be in, but it kept my weight off. Finally last year I went to my bariatric surgeon and confessed up. He did some tests and realized my esophagus was "floppy" and dilated. He did a complete unfill of my band at the time. I was able to maintain my original weight loss on the keto diet, but after 10 months I fell off the keto wagon and the weight QUICKLY returned. I gained around 50 lbs in 4 months!! I went back to my surgeon a year later and we have decided to remove my lap band and switch to the gastric bypass. He is not a fan of the lap band surgery anymore and is not recommending them to his patients. I have my surgery next week on October 6th. I am nervous because I am 52 now and postmenopausal. Im definitely not as active as I was when I first had my lap band surgery almost 12 years ago. How many people on this forum have had the lap band to bypass? How was their weight loss compared to the first surgery? What differences do you notice with restriction? Anyone having the surgery soon? or recently? Thanks in advance!

    It feels too easy.

    There is no one right way to recover. There is no only one right plan or only one right calorie goal, protein goal, etc. There’s no specific minimum time frame to eat a meal or drink a cup of liquid. There are, however, generalisations, averages, some can, some can’t, etc. things. We’re all different & have different needs & are able or unable to manage different things at different stages. If your body can manage it without causing you discomfort or pain you’re ok. Your body will tell you pretty quickly what is too much, too fast, what it likes, what it doesn’t, etc. You’re following the plan your surgeon gave you so all is good. My surgeon considers each patient’s starting weight, health status, weight loss history, etc. when assigning plans. My post surgical plan & recommendations had similarities but also differences to what a friend who was also a patient of his had. Our pre surgery diets were different too - mine keto & hers shakes only. We’re not the same people so it makes sense our plans weren’t exactly the same & neither were our experiences but we both reached our goal weights. There will be times you may stall or lose more one day or over one week & less the next. As long as the general trend month to month is downwards you’re golden.

    Pre-op doubts

    I am an advocate of finding the food choices & way of eating that works for you.There isn’t just one totally correct way to eat eat. It may be vegetarian or meat focussed or Aitken or vegan or keto, intermittent fasting or frequent eating, etc. or include aspects of a number of eating styles. The only thing you can trust will work for everyone is portion control - eat more than you need you’ll gain weight. Once you get to maintenance you can really embrace your new way of eating but you could start to incorporate aspects while losing as long as you’re still meeting your plan’s requirements & expectations. Have regular conversations with your nutritionalist & surgeon to discuss what you could start introducing & when. Your regular blood work will influence their advice & recommendations. You may (or may not) have to make adjustments to your weight loss plan & future eating style because of your personal physiological needs. Some may be pre existing, some may arise because of the surgery or be discovered as a result of all the additional medical tests & monitoring. I’ve never been great with too fatty or too oily food. I was low fat while losing but added some more good fats from goal. I was low carb while losing too & then added some whole & multi grains carbs. Since my sleeve, rice, bread & pasta sit like lumps in my tummy so I still don’t eat them. Protein has become even more important to me since I had my gall removed 4 months ago as I don’t absorb it properly anymore. I’m a carnivore but include vegetarian meals occasionally. 40+yrs of fasting & skipping meals killed my metabolism. I feed my much faster metabolism now - 3 meals & 3 or 4 snacks a day. These things influenced how I chose to eat now & it’s been working for me. Your enthusiasm for researching & adopting a new way of eating & making the changes to take the best advantage of your surgery is fantastic. I hope it motivates others starting the process too.     Pre-op doubts

    One can fast and incorporate good fats with no problem. Many VSG patients are on the keto diet and/or intermittent fasting. Surgeons each have their own philosophy about diet after WLS and they vary drastically. The one I like the best is Dr. Duc Vuong (Ultimate Gastric Sleeve Success). I also love his YouTube channel.   11. @ms.sss My GP wasn't sure, but based on my diet and weight issues, she figured that had to be the case. What little I did find about it mentioned that it's not unheard of in people who are of Belgian/Irish descent. Both locations are prone to famines, so what was a life saving trait is now a malignant one in their descendants. I've never found a name for it when looking either. I'm going to try Keto again for a week or two and see how I feel. My doc recommended it as a way to restart my weight loss, so we'll see how that goes. I really appreciate your input!
  12. Hey Everyone, I hope you're doing well. Here's a bit of background on me before I get into my current dilemma, if you don't care about that, skip to the TLDR at the end. I'm a 27 year old man and I got my surgery last year. I've always been heavy (the last time I was less than 300 lbs was in elementary school) and I wanted to live a longer, happier life. I talked with my doctor and she said that Bariatric surgery was the best option for me. I went to one Bariatric clinic and was basically treated as a number, so after six months of prep and almost $1k, I left them and went to a Bariatric clinic that a family friend had had good luck with. I had better luck with them and was able to get my surgery ~ 4 months after my first visit with them(vs almost a year with the first one). My finance(then GF) and I actually got COVID three months before my surgery, though it was not horrible for us. My hospital stay was fine and my recovery went pretty well. I had issues with the liquid diet following the surgery, but after that I was fine until now. Read after the TL;DR for my current dilemma. TL;DR: I'm 10 months post-op and my weight loss has stagnated. I'm prepping ~10 oz per meal, though I usually don't finish it, and have been doing that for about a month. I do about 20-30 minutes on a peddle bike (under my desk) per day. My doctor recommended Keto for me (which I tried pre-op and lost 90+lbs, though it was terrible for me psychologically) and I started it today. I was wondering if anyone had any tips to push past the wall I'm stuck on. Thanks for any advice. Paul
  13. My stall broke and I'm down 2.2 lb. this week. It must have been the pickles lol They always cause me to gain water weight for a couple of days. Causes a lot of weight fluctuation in the past and present. I've really been craving them or even a swig of pickle juice. I read it is common to crave salty things when our carbs are low. I eat a balanced diet, not keto but because my calories are low at the moment, so therefore, so are the carbs. I am rooting for all those on a stall as I await my next one...     I need some help.

    I'm 4 months out too and hit stalls a few times. In the beginning I believe it was due to not enough protein an possibly not enough calories. But once I corrected that and made an effort to increase both, my weight started moving again. However, I hit my lowest weight of 253.4 lbs on Aug 28th and since then I have stalled and not lost anything more. In fact I have been seeing 255, 256, 257 on the scale since then. Nothing has changed diet wise so I'm not sure why (but I'm also due my period in 8-12 days so maybe that's why?). But like others say, it's normal to stall along the way. Anywho, my normal diet usually consists of...... Breakfast: 1 egg scrambled with some shredded cheddar cheese. Sometimes with some salsa, spicy guacamole, or mushrooms and/or onions, etc. I also usually have 1 or two turkey sausage patties but not always. Once in a while I will even make a sausage, egg and cheese on a whole wheat English Muffin but can ever only eat about half or a little more that half. Lunch: A scoop of tuna (made with light mayo) with 6 whole wheat Saltines and a few cubes of cheese. Or sometimes a sandwich (on Aldi Keto Bread: zero net carbs and 50 cal) with turkey lunchmeat and cheese (again, I can never eat a whole sandwich). Or sometimes just the meat and cheese by itself. Dinner: Usually chicken (baked in some way or another) and I always try and add a scoop of veggies but once I eat my protein I'm usually not able to fit the veggies. I also try and add brown rice once in a while or black/kidney/northern/etc. beans but usually never eat more than a few forks full. Other proteins I eat for dinner are salmon, shrimp, tilapia, flounder, etc. I also use the various tortilla's from https://mrtortilla.com/ and make all sorts of tacos or quesadillas. Each tortilla is 1 carb and 15 calories!! We LOVE them!! Oh and I also make chicken wings with various seasonings in my air fryer. Homemade chicken nuggets too. I don't usually snack during the day or evening but once in a while I will have an extra thing during the day like some light Greek yogurt, or cottage cheese alone or with something like cut up cantaloupe. I do TRY and have fruit most days too, like an apple or Halo, etc.

    Happy birthday Arual85, I am 2 days away from my bypass surgery. I've been lucky in my pre-op to be able to have some foods (more keto focused) but I finally understand that sugar and carbs are my go-to food choices.   16. I remember my second month with VSG, and I had lost only 4 lbs. I remember feeling disheartened as well but the weight loss continued steadily every month. Unfortunately, a person's body mass is the main determinant of one's metabolic rate. The heavier you are, the higher your metabolism, more calories you will burn. Although lower carbs and protein are important, the fact is If you eat fewer calories than you burn, you will lose weight. People on keto, for example, won't lose weight if they are eating too many calories. I would talk to your team and surgeon about your concerns as well. Perhaps they need to rule out other reasons, like water weight gain (I'm familiar with that one hehe). The weight will come off. It just may not be as quick as someone who is 600 lbs. Hang in there. Things will improve.

    To Lie or Not to Lie

    Oddly enough I also never lie to strangers or casual acquaintances. It feels very low risk for me. However the people I interact with often or know well is another story. I’ve learned to read the room. If someone earnestly/ privately asks I usually just tell them. They are also so happy to see someone in person that is happy with the their results and doing well/not struggling. But I’ve also had experiences where people very publicly/ loudly (nearly shouting across a room) ask how I lost weight. These interactions feel disingenuous and shaming so I don’t take them seriously. I usually tell these people the most complex set of layered diets and activities (Keto, fasting, glucose monitoring, cheat days, mercury retrograde, belly dancing, etc.) in great detail until they are satisfied. Those people can speculate but will never get the (whole) truth from me. BTW Congratulations on your success!

    Favorite Sugar free or alternative foods?

    Forget snacks entirely unless they are protein or vegetable. They grease the slippery slope to regaining what you have lost. I speak from experience. I am approaching RNY revision and I will not make the same mistakes again. The pre-op food plan and the (clear/full liquid/puree) stages post op while we are not getting hungry give us the opportunity to establish a new way of eating. If we seek sugar-free or keto snacks we are merely making some substitutes for the OLD way of eating. It's too easy to find ourselves eating sugared and carbohydrate snacks and food when we don't happen to have the "-free" type. Just because substitute snack foods are sold on bariatric sites does not mean they are good for us. If we are wise we will ignore those products. Eat whole foods, fresh or frozen vegetables and fruits, quality poultry and meat products. Avoid sugar, sugar substitutes, wheat/flour products, and processed foods. We can get plenty of tasty food to eat with these choices. I encourage you to obtain and read these two books by Dr. Matthew Weiner: A Pound of Cure and The Bariatric Guide and Cookbook. There are lots of other bariatric cookbooks available, too, including some for Air Fryers, InstaPots, and CrockPots. These will help you learn your new way of eating.
  19. There’s a lot of variations in the pre surgery diets. Mine was real food too - specifically keto. So I ate meat, eggs, full fat dairy, low carbs, non starchy vegetables & berries. Yours sounds like it may be keto or similar to keto too. My surgeon requires different patients to follow different pre surgery diets based on various factors - weight, blood work, results from various medical tests, etc. Sometimes the diet is not only to reduce the fat around your liver, but to lose some weight before surgery, break some addictions/cravings (caffeine, sugar, carbs, etc.) & /or get you thinking about what you eat. Best advice is to follow the plan you’ve been given.
  20. KSW22 I am sorry to hear you can not do your revision surgery and am wondering if you have ever looked into keto/low carb? I had the roux en y in dec 2004 and lost 100 lbs, but than got almost back up to my original weight. Two years ago i found keto and Dr. Ken Berry (u tube him). I had success with losing about 70 lbs, but last year when covid hit I got off track and am now getting ready to start over. It is the closest thing to what i should have done after my 1st surgery, if I had only known than what I know now. look into it and if you have questions feel free to ask.

    Hi everyone! I'm now almost eight weeks post op (5 July) and I've lost 15kg. I still find liquid and soft food easier to digest and find foods too rich... basically my body regects food quickly. I haven't come up with a good weight loss story yet, keto seems believable... Anyway nice to have a community xx

    Struggling with 2 week milk plan

    Thank you so much for your reply. From looking through my paperwork it seems the milk plan is just my consultants preferred diet of choice before surgery and there are other low carb low fat no sugar diets people follow to achieve the ketosis. i did look up the best keto friendly foods and prawns was one of the top suggestions since its considered to be 'clean' I didnt realise just how awful id feel doing this right at the beginning and now i feel worried about eating them lol! Back on the 100 percent milk track tomorrow for me 💪🏻💪🏻 Ive got this xx

    Unexplained Weight gain post revision

    Some of the Facebook groups are odd The strangest response I got was someone questioning why my surgeon would do a revision for GERD when I didn't need to lose more weight. And someone else questioning my dietitian for not having me on moderate carbs instead of keto. She's been my dietitian for 2.5 years since I was pre op VSG. Thank you
  24. That’s the thing isn’t it. Our cravings, habits or emotional drives to eat are always with us. They don’t disappear as we lost our weight - unfortunately. It’s a constant battle to manage them & reduce their power over us. Portion size & calories. I’m only 2 years out but that’s the key for me. And nutritionally dense food of course. As you know if you eat more calories than your body needs to function you’ll put on weight. If you eat less than your body needs you’ll lose. Sure you could go back to protein shakes temporarily as a kick start to reduce your calories & start to break your cravings. Or you could follow keto or other diet for a couple of weeks too. But it really comes down to reducing those calories & portion sizes & making nutritionally sound food choices that will be sustainable in your lifestyle. Can you go back to your dietician/nutritionalist for some hints & tips to refocus you?     Please Help, Advice Needed!

    Thank you for your reply! Yes, since weight has been a focal point in my life, I’ve been weighing myself daily on every single plan I’ve ever done, from HCG, to Keto etc. I started my current journey many months ago when I was going through the 6 month approval process. I weigh myself each morning, naked…after using the bathroom and before consuming anything to eat or drink. I was completely baffled when it said 226.6 this morning when the last two days it has said a solid 225. Im going to have faith this is just for today lol! The only thing I changed is I added some more calories thinking that would help break the 225 stall. The only other thing that has changed is that for the last few days, I’ve went for 20-30 min walks.
