    Buddies Group - Surgery Dec 4 to 15, 2017

Hi everyone! I'm Morgan, and I was sleeved on 12/5. I'm about 3.5 weeks out. The first day was ROUGH. I pretty much vomited from the time I woke up until the next morning. I'm doing well now, and just really trying to adjust to this new normal. I am having trouble getting all of my protein in, though. I do really love Genepro. I hear a lot of people mix it with coffee, so I might try that. I can't tolerate flavored protein shakes (my pouch HATES) artificial sweeteners, Sylvia, Trulia, and sugar alcohols. Premier Protein had been the worst so far for me. Are there any other options out there that actually taste decent?

Almost 5 days post-op and on mushy/pureed stage

Thank you so much! I've been concerned that I am progressing too fast. After hearing about you and your wife's similar plan, it certainly helps. What did you eat during your soft/mushy/puree stage? Did you have vegetables? Any recommendations other Genepro? One thing I really like about Genepro is that there is no after-taste and that the protein scoop is not HUGE.

    Protein oatmeal

Since I'm still pretty early out I use a mini food-processor for a more fine consistency of oatmeal. But anyways, I add a dash of cinnamon to dry oatmeal, 1 scoop of unflavored Genepro protein powder, 1/2 pack Truvia, stir thoroughly so everything gets incorporated. I then add 1% milk and cook in microwave. As soon as it comes out, I add a small amount of vanilla extract and stir. It is SO good. No aftertaste at all, and it is creamy.

Almost 5 days post-op and on mushy/pureed stage

Your post-op progression is not at all unreasonable, and is consistent with what the more experienced sleeve/DS practices do. Both my wife and I were on soft/mushy/puree in the hospital (as tolerated). Some patients may stay on more liquids longer depending upon how much inflammation they have in the stomach. My wife was slower to progress than I was, but within the normal expectations for the program. If your protein requirements are only 40g, which is on the low side (typically 50-60g minimum for smaller women,) I would certainly use something better than Genepro, as that stuff, at best, is substantially overstated in its' protein content.
  5. Hi all- My surgeon's post-op plan allows 1-2oz pureed/mushy soft, high protein meals at days 3-14. For example: Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, canned tuna, ground chicken and ground turkey. The "pureed/mushy" phase is combined and there is no separation regarding pureed vs mushy foods. I am almost 5 days post-op from VSG and so far, so good. I've had soup that's been pureed, greek yogurt with 1/2 slice of canned peach (in fruit juice, not syrup) pureed, canned chicken salad. There have been ZERO issues in terms of nausea/vomiting/discomfort and my serving size is 1oz at a time. I am close to meeting fluids goals and am hovering around 55 fl. oz/day. Still working on meeting 40mg protein/day requirement and am drinking one supplement shake/day and using GENEPRO too. Overall I just feel hesitant about my eating. My concern is that I see there is quite a variation of post-op diet plans and most people are on liquids/full liquids for some time immediately post-op and my plan allows me to sorta bypass that stage. I will be sure to bring-up my concerns at my 1st follow-up appt. next week, but for the time being should I just continue doing what I am doing since I've had no issues.....yet?

    Eating months after the surgery

I'm over 4 years out and I definitely can eat more than in the beginning. NOT like I ae before my RNY by no means. I still eat small amounts. My morning I have 2 cups of black coffee and then I fix me an Espresso with added GENEPRO nonflavored Protein. ( BTW there are some that don't care for GENEPRO please check with your DR) I love it. Every blood test results have been great, but others on here are not fans. Lunch I have some mixed nuts, maybe a banana or frozen grapes in the afternoon. Dinner I have a half sandwich made with a little mayo 1 slice of chopped ham and 1 slice of swiss cheese or a Tamale, Chili beans or a homemade burrito made with refried (spicy) Beans, cheese onions, and some sour cream. My the HEALTHY wholegrain bread. My burrito is made with low-fat low carb tortillas. Sometimes I have a salad with lots of veggies and tuna added. I feel bad that I can't eat too much salad and then it goes bad before I can get it ate. But sometimes I just have to eat a salad. I miss the big everything salad. LOL Actually, I eat pretty much whatever I want just in Moderation. I say everyone has to find their NEW NORMAL. Have a great one!! And Happy Holidays!!
  7. Genepro is an awesome unflavored protein powder. My RD recommended it. I stir it into yogurts and I’ll blend it into my Premier Protein shakes (brings the total protein up to 45 grams). I will blend it into my soups as well but I make sure the soup isn’t too hot. Genepro is only 1 tablespoon vs. some protein powders require 1/4 cup. It’s pricey but so worth it!

    Need a Buddy

I don’t have a gallbladder so no not that. But I’m having a very hard time transitioning from soft proteins to regular food. Most days I never get in only half the fluid and I meet the protein with protein drinks help when I have dumping syndrome which is often in this stage for me. I had liver disease liver induced diabetes and failing kidney from hereditary triglycerides was eating at my liver so either gastric or donor. Anyways during being sick with liver I got to where I didn’t like meats well. So it’s been hard. So I use genepro with crystal light to get my protein. Lots of people think it doesn’t work but I’ve done my research and it’s absorbing great with me. I’m still nauseous especially if out to eat home somewhat better. My appetite sucks unless it’s non protein then I’m good. By the way I’m southern as cornbread so excuse my speech lol. East Tn at bottom of mountains lol.

    Mixing two proteins

There are lots of products on the dietary supplement market that don't do anything except lighten your wallet, but since they don't do anything demonstrably harmful, there is no regulatory reason for them to be pulled off the market. Think of all of the advertised "male enhancement" products that are sold. While Genepro may not be a scam, it checks all of the boxes of being a typical nutritional supplement scam - it's too good to be true (30g of "equivalent" - whatever that is - protein in only 15g of product, and with fewer calories than 30g of real protein!) nobody quite knows what it really is, and they aren't saying, and there is no independent testing of their claims. It may not be harmful - particularly for their target market of normal westerners who already get adequate protein in their diet - but for those who are struggling to get in a minimal amount of protein, it isn't worth the risk. Go with a known quantity that is well documented and accepted - whey isolate, concentrate or blends, pea, soy, egg, etc. It may be legitimate product, but they sure aren't marketing it like it is.

    Mixing two proteins

Genepro is crap. The company has been sued at least twice and just lost the most recent one. There is no such thing as "medical grade protein". It's whey. They came out and said it is just predigested whey that gets absorbed very quickly. It is not equivalent to 30g, it is at best 10g. The best thing to do with that crap is just chuck it in the trash. Yes it is on the bariatric store, but that is a store. It sole purpose is to sell things people will buy. And people buy Genepro because they want to believe it, not because it works. To your original question, mix your protein powders however you like. Whey, casein, pea, or soy... doesn't matter. It's no different than having a salad with chicken on top. There are some benefits to mixing proteins. BCAA content, absorption rate, bio-availability... experimentation in with this should be encouraged. And don't worry about taking in more than 30g-ish of protein at a time. RickM stated it well. You will absorb the protein eventually.

    Mixing two proteins

Rick it's hard to get 64oz of water and 70g of protein in at this stage I'm in. So, i tried to see if had a short cut to something. But, since Genepro protein can be mixed in any drink I will spread out the intake of protein in my water. Thank you.

    Mixing two proteins

The old stuff about GENEPRO. It can't be all be bad for sure. It would be pulled off the market!! If you check even BARIATRICPAL sells t on this site. I think this conversation has been a long drawn out thing. Check with your team ask them about GENEPRO.

    Mixing two proteins

The Genepro stuff is too good to be true, so I wouldn't depend on that to do anything other than make expensive urine. The claim that some, even professionals, make about there being some protein limit per meal is somewhat dubious, and goes against our evolutionary biology - in the good old days we might gorge on an antelope and then have little protein for a few days - so there is some conflict between these "modern" hypotheses and how we actually developed. (A diminishing absorption with increased amount would be consistent with our biology, but not some magical cutoff point.) That said, I generally do space out protein, along with other nutrients, across the day, under the premise that there are many nutrients that work well together, and we have also evolved to graze (hunting and gathering...) and it is generally better not to overwhelm our systems, particularly with a reduced stomach. As long as we have to sip liquids all day to stay hydrated (until our drinking returns to semi-normal), why not just sip on another protein drink?
  14. Hello bariatric world, I have a concern. I am about 12 days post vsg and I'm having a hard time getting the required amount of protein in. I don't have an issue with premier protein. I purchased Genepro protein to up my protein intake. I wanted to know if it's ok to add a scoop of 30g of Genepro protein to a premixed premier protein shake? I don't want it to harm me. But it sounds like an awesome thing to do and get protein intake out the way. Please let me know if it's ok to mix both proteins. Thank you
  15. Thank you all so much! I got these 2 things from GNC today: 1. GENEPRO Medical Grade Unflavored 30g Protein Powder 2. (2) bottles of Isopure Zero Carb Protein Ready-To-Drink And I have one 12-pack of MuscleMilk. I think that's going to be it for now, as far as supplements. What are your thoughts on vitamins immediately post-op as well?
  16. I'm so sorry to hear you are having so much trouble. I have not had any issues with protein, since I have not had surgery yet. I use a flavorless protein powder called genepro. It actually is tasteless. I blend it with my hot herbal tea and almond milk in the morning. Maybe it could work for you. I bought mine on Amazon and got it same day, since I have prime. I hope the Dr figures out what's going on and can help you.

    Protein

Genepro protein powder. It’s a tablespoon of powder for 30 grams of protein! I mix it into pudding, sugar free hot chocolate, water, crystal light, oatmeal. It’s unflavored. Works great! I got it on Amazon

    Isopure unflavored protein tips

Before you buy this be sure to check in with your Dr or Nutritionist. But...I a huge coffee drinker for sure. BTW BariatricPal Store has a new product, it is NO ACID COFFEE Even my hubby likes it. LOL So back to unflavored Protein: I put GENEPRO in my Espresso every day. No taste at all. Win-win for me!!! It definitely has no taste at all. I tried ISOPURE and personally, it was so gross!! I commend anyone that can drink it!! GROSS!! I tried a protein unflavored called PROTEINEX!! According to my DR. that is why I ordered it. He was wrong!!
  21. Better late than never, I use Genepro daily as a supplement to protein I take in via food. It is approved by my nutritionist, however I do not count it as 30 grams of protein, i count it as 15. I mix it in with my morning hot tea, greek yogurt, diet grape crandberry juice and pb2. I am 4 months out, down 68 pounds and all of my lab work has come back perfect. For me personally, it truly is the best supplement.

    Morning Vs Evening

The best time is when you will do it. As noted, with all of the conflicting research of varying quality, it's hard to tell what time is better, if any at all, or if that view will change over time. Further, what research there is on exercise is rarely focused on us - the obese and recovering obese, so there is another variable that throws everything into question. Exercising at a sub-optimal time is better than not exercising at the optimal time. This is somewhat similar to my advice on protein drinks - while whey isolate is generally considered to be the most available and absorbable form, the one that you will drink is better than the best thing out there that you won't drink (with the possible exception of Genepro, which only seems to be good for making expensive urine.)
  23. Thanks! I'll check out that powder. My nutritionist required us to use Genepro for our supplement and I've also read the lawsuit against the company. Very interesting stuff.
  24. Chuck that Genepro in the trash. It is snake oil and a worthless protein. Stick with a tried and true whey protein that doesn't have a recent lawsuit loss. Optimum Nutrions Gold Standard is my go-to powder. I don't make shakes though, I make protein cakes. Scoop of protein powder, baking powder, and coffee creamer. 30-45 seconds in the microwave and done.
  25. Hey all! I've grown an aversion to protein drinks (Premier was the only one I could stomach and now it makes me sick) and I'm still feeling a lot of restriction with solid foods so I can't get much in. I know I'm not getting all of my daily protein and I'm paying the price with hair loss, fatigue, low weight loss, etc. I have a bag of Genepro protein and I can't stand the taste of it mixed in drinks and food but I think I could handle quickly drinking a "shot" of protein powder mixed with water or some other liquid. I have 2oz cups I can mix it in, kind of like the cups with protein that they give you in the hospital after surgery. If anyone has tried this, what was the result? Is there an issue with quickly drinking 30g of protein? Just a texture/taste thing?
