Round 3: Revision planned for July 31 2019

A similar stomach revision is called a StomaphyX. There are several that make the stoma between the stomach and small intestine smaller.
  2. Missy, I don't think anyone can predict whether or not they'll have to have a revision. I held at 140 for years and pretty much ate what I wanted within reason and then 3 years ago, the scale started going up. No matter how little I ate, good or bad for me foods. Didn't matter; the scale just kept going up. I didn't think this surgery could fail as it's something that was so successful for years for me then just stop working. Now I've got this second chance and I'm going to work my butt off (figuratively and literally!) to get back to my goal weight. Sent from my SM-N975U using BariatricPal mobile app
  3. I had a revision from gastric bypass. Only my surgeon went the other way he gave me a sleeve and did a SIPS a kind of mini Duodenal switch. Unfortunately, it didn't help me lose any weight. It wasn't a total loss I no longer have diarrhea. But I was in tremendous pain. Good luck with your plan but remember its what you put in your mouth more than anything that determines weight loss. A lots of these people who are successful are on very low calorie diets and stick to them. I thought I could get the magic bullet again by have my intestines operated on again. but it didn't work for me. Right now I am trying optifast. and so it goes...

    rny vs mini

Very helpful Marina...thank you. When do you think you will have the revision?
  5. Hi: Sorry to hear about your troubles. I hope that your revision works out well. You've been so successful so far. I'm sure you'll continue to do well because you've come so far and done so well already. I've never heard of a sleeve revision. What do they revise? Please educate this community by sharing what you know and how you proceed through this revision. Thank you. Sue
  6. Hi Sue, I have to get a sleeve to bypass revision, it will be fixing the stomach, as well as doing a partial bypass. They don't do a full bypass with the rerouting of all the organs they would for a full bypass, but partial. I was very much not for the bypass, that's why I had the sleeve, so this takes an emotional toll on me even more so because at this point I really don't have a say or option. I'm just trying to maintain a positive attitude with the 'everything happens for a reason' attitude. It will be laparoscopic, and they said they will try to go into the incisions from when I had the sleeve (I really pushed that one), but I may have an extra on or two. Because of the way this one is done it is unlikely. I am very happy with the healing of my scars from the sleeve as they are pretty much non existant. My recovery will be a couple to few days in the hospital, three day prior liquid diet (only had to do a day for the sleeve), as well as doing post op diet as if I was getting the full bypass. I was made aware this surgery has only been done once by my facility which draws extra concern and anxiousness, as this is a newer procedure. The one person that has had it has had an great out come.
  7. If your gonna do it go with gastric bypass. You lose more weight & have more restrictions on your body. Plus you don't have to revise it like many other ppl.

    I'm new.

I had the revision 7/15/15 from band to bypass and I was so nervous but it melted away as soon as I got into my hospital gown and met my nurses. You'll do great! Let us know how it goes.
  9. Hi everyone - my first post here! I was going to have revision surgery on my band (insurance had approved the revision), but decided that the sleeve was a better move for me for a ton of reasons. So i'm meeting with surgeon, anesthesiologist, PCP, nutritionist and psychologist on Jan. 17 to get all of the needed paperwork started and into my surgeons office so the insurance stuff can begin. My first question is related to scar tissue when removing the band. I've had the band for about 5 years (was successful, but it slipped, so it's now useless) and i'm concerned about the damage when puling the band off. Any experience and feedback would be greatly appreciated. Andre

    Need advice/Help

Hello, I was banded 9/06. I have lost 67 lbs and things have came to a stand still. I have had many fills and I am also in need of one again (waiting for insurance to reinstate...long story). But meanwhile...I just feel like I need to try and jumpstart the band again and its usefullness. I will be honest..I have "fell off the wagon" meaning I have been kinda eating around the band and etc. Has anyone went thru this and if so what did you do to jumpstart yourself again. So I guess what I am needing is some ideas, advice, help to start over again. I know first thing I need is a fill...but it may be a month yet before insurance kicks back in. I have spoken with 3 others in my area that have the band and they have had similar stories to mine and they have talked to dr and dr has lined them up for a Lapband into Bypass revision. I do NOT want the bypass! This band works when I make it work and I want to be the last one that has to line up for a bypass. Thanks for listening....

    Complications

I had band to bypass revision on 3/28. I had my band removed on 12/17 due to complications. I had no problem getting approved, just had to stay above BMI requirements, which wasn't a problem around the holidays, lol. Good luck! Sent from my LG-H631 using the BariatricPal App

    Now what..... (very long sorry)

Aaaargh, I wrote you a long message and it got deleted Here we go again. I'm so sorry you have been through such a long and frustrating ordeal!! I am glad you have found your way here though as it's a very supportive environment and there are always plenty of people ready to jump in and answer your questions. I want to try to answer some of your food questions. I'll share with you what my guidelines are that I've been given if you are interested. This is how our nutrition goals have been explained to me. Protein needs to be the #1 focus because we can eat so little that if we don't focus on it, we don't get enough. Protein is super important to everyone but especially to us because it builds muscle (which burns fat and cals), and it helps trick the body out of starvation mode when we are eating so low calorie, so that our body doesn't hang onto everything. Getting 65-75g of protein a day is the goal. Also getting your min 64 oz of Water a day is important. On my plan, the first 6 weeks before full solid food, each meal is to be 90% protein and 10% complex carbs from fruits and veggies. At 6 weeks when getting onto solid food, it can be more like 75% protein and 25% complex carbs. Simple carbs from breads, pastas, etc are not recommended especially during the losing phase - but most people do eat them once they are maintaining their weight... or once they can't take it anymore hehe. With the sleeve nothing is off limits, but you are just supposed to try to keep your focus on the right protein rich foods and let other things be occasional. Salads - they put that on our list of things to stay away from. Not because there's anything wrong with it, but because it doesn't provide too much nutrition for us, lettuce is mostly water and also hard for the system to digest. They told us when we want salad, stick to spinach leaves, but focus more on the stuff goin ON the salad, and make a protein like chicken, shrimp, or beef a main part of the salad. Again everything in moderation  As for what to expect out of your weight loss - it's anyone's guess. Our bodies are so different. There is a whole sub-forum on here for band to sleeve revisions, so maybe in there some people with similar experiences could give you a better idea... but my educated guess would be that you will lost at least that extra 20 lbs, but it may be slow because your body has been through such an ordeal and may really need time to adjust and to "believe" and let go of the fat that is stored. Be patient and dilligent in your food choices right now until you get to a place where you are comfortable. Hope this helps!!
  14. Hi :-) and yessssss, I'm still on for Nov. 12th for my revision. My hubby and I arrive in SAN on Nov 11th @ 10:04 am. So I guess we WILL meet When do you come in?

    Any seattle sleevers ?

I am in University Place and having my revision May 10th. very nervous but need to do this. I was originally going to use Dr Aceves, but he quoted me $11,000 as I am self-pay. I am instead using Dr Fernando Garcia after a ton of research. I think I am in good hands if Alma is any sign of what to expect. She is very thorough

    New Here

Yes, she unfilled to put it back in place. She slowly put some fluid back in. It slipped again and it would actually slip into and out of a comfortable spot. Finally I am just totally unfilled. Now waiting for a revision to a sleeve.

    I'm down again today

Thanks Terry, I noticed your history: you said you had a revision from the bypass to the band? I have never heard of that--or do you still have your bypass in addition to the band? Also, how did you know you had irritation of the esophagus and needed an unfill?

who pays to fix a leak?

I think it depends on the doctor. My port flipped and I had to have revision surgery. I never saw a bill and didn't pay a dime for it. And, no, I did not have insurance, I was self-pay.
  19. I had a lap band placed 3 years ago. At the time of surgery I weighed 407 pounds I am currently 295 pounds. Yes the band did work it wasn’t magic. I did have a lot of complications. After the first year all my complications started to happen. I threw up every day for the past 3 years. I was constantly sick and some days couldn’t even hold down water. I am currently 5 days post op from my revision. I had the band removed and had the bypass. During the operation my surgeon said my stomach had begun to grown around the band and was very difficult to remove. Yes the band does work to a certain point but in my opinion if you are going to go threw all the pain of having wls go for something more effective!

    Self Pay Cost

That is one of the reasons I am getting a revision surgery from band to sleeve. Once I started having band complications, it really got expensive. My insurance pays nothing band related. Once you get a sleeve, you are done. There are no problems with restriction, no fills, no unfills. You have restriction immediately after surgery and you keep it the rest of your life. The part of the stomach that you have is not stretchy so it doesn't stretch out like it does with gastric bypass. I am very excited to get this over with and going back to eating small portions of anything I want!

    Recovery time?

Hello all! I'm getting my lap band removed on April 14 (after having it for almost 8 years). No revision surgery. Any of you who had the same, could you please share your recovery experiences? I was planning on going back to work on the 20th. Thanks!!

Band to be removed Thursday - Soooo Scared!

I had my band removed as part of a revision to the Duodenal Switch (DS) surgery. My surgeon had done it before and the entire procedure--band out and DS done--was under two hours. It is not "cartoon simple," as he put it, especially since yours is moving around...but I've heard of more erosion-related removal problems. good luck... Sue

Band to be removed Thursday - Soooo Scared!

Thats the PONT! If WLS is for life Why would you want it reversed? It only needs revisonal surgery if its going wrong and the complications again are rare and if like happen very early days. Unlike the band most people experience probs around 18 months to 2 years. It can be devastateing if the band has been great then suddenly slippes and needs removing. Not every one is likely to keep the weight off! You ONLY usually have the band removed when there is complications and the long term chance of complications are way higher with a band than any other method of WLS. A Doc will endourse the band if thats all there doing and most general practioners dont know enough about anything so have a say eather way. (in a specialist manner) A Specialsit bariatric surgeon should be skilled in all the surgeries and should have enough experience to assess a patient and there suitablility for what ever procedure. The patient should of course consult with the surgeon and heed the surgeons advice. This less invasive and reverasble thing is sooo repetative it seems like the laimest excusess for a band i have ever heard. It says you expect it to fail and when it does its easy to fix. Whats the point in entering into a lifetime commitment to change with the expoectation its likely to fail. All surgeries to some extent are reversable. The band completely reversabe and usually with that there is a very high chance the weight will regain. Thats prob one of the sole reasons why lots of insurance companies in the US dont fund banding and lots of people have to fight for it. Surly that tellls you something! i seriously cannot see why you would ever want it reversed if things are going well. And in most bypass cases things go well like the stats say there is higher complications probs with a band than any other method of WLS so again if this are going great why would you consider revision?
  24. Imaginegirl, like people have already said, you might have trouble finding a surgeon who still do bands. Also, long term about 50% of people who got the band 10 years ago are having difficulty and getting them removed. There are LOTS of us here who have had to get revisions done. I went with the band those 11 years ago with the same reason you did, I just wish I knew then what I know now, and I'd have gone straight to the bypass and not wasted 10 years fighting with my band. Of course it's your body, but do your homework and be sure the band is really what you want. Either way, good luck!

New Lap Band plus Plication surgery

I want to thank everyone who has had this surgery for their posts! I am having my band removed due to erosion and am currently in the research phase of trying to decide between the sleeve and banded plication. I like the sound of banded plication but am so afraid of having a repeat erosion and then being unable to revise to the sleeve. My understanding is that slippage and erosion are greatly reduced with banded plication as they do not have to fill the band as frequently and as tightly as they do with the band by itself. It makes sense to me and the thought of not cutting my stomach is very appealing. I just want to make sure that whatever I do is successful because this will probably be my last opportunity to do this.
