    Insuance won't cover tests :(

My insurance only covers the actual surgery as well, but none of the tests or weight loss Dr. appts. I've had to be very careful to have a "complaint" other than obesity at my weight loss appts, my sleep study was covered due to snoring and fatigue, but even my portion of that was over $600. I've had to let my PCP know not to code obesity as the primary diagnosis for visits. I did have to pay for psych evaluation out of pocket ($300). I will need a barium swallow pre-op and I'm not sure how to get that covered. If not, I recommend negotiating a cash price. That's what I did for my psych eval. If they absolutely won't pay for labs, check out Theranos. They are lab clinics located in select Walgreens with very low cash prices. As long as you get the labs ordered sent to your surgeon it shouldn't matter where you got them.
  2. Sorry guys. TMI. But here goes. I am 8 weeks post op and have lost almost no weight. I lost about 5lbs right at first... Then nothing. I eat right... Lean meats and legumes mostly... A little oatmeal when i feel carb starved. I also have had severe constipation. I cant go without copious amounts of stool softners and mirolax and i have to resort to magnesium citrate fairly regularly. When i do go, its a very small amount and seems like it is just scootching around a big blockage. Im making a doc appt this week as im afraid im going to create a laxative dependency. In the meant time.... Could this lack of bm evacuation be causing me to not loose. I know the stool itself weighs alot when impacted, but i am wondering if impaction will actually keep your malabsorption from working propperly? Thanks for your thoughts on this

    I'm Stalled?

a stall is no loss of weight or inches in over 30 days. It irks me when people use this term so loosely. You are fine, Let your body do its thing. Congrats.

    I'm Stalled?

It has been a week and my weight goes up and down about an lb, but no loss. I understand that my concern is a bit "frustrating" to some, but I really do want to know if I am doing something wrong? I am 216lbs and I have been there 217-216 for two weeks. I am not sounding an "ALARM" because I am happy. However, if I am not doing something right and need to make adjustments, I need to know. Has my body perhaps gone into starvation mode?

    Denied :(

I hate to hear that this is happening to you as well! My insurance did the exact same thing to me even though my BMI is above 60 :/ I just finished the 6 month weight loss study, didn't lose any, maybe 3 lbs overall, but still up 8lbs from my initial surgeon consultation.... So I'm kind of in limbo. Mine should get submitted from pcp to surgeon then to insurance sometime next week. I sincerely hope that you don't have any more roadblocks in your journey! 10 lbs gone already!

Just a few days on the 2 week pre surgery diet and I have lost 10 lbs. That rocks. I must say that is the ONLY bright spot in the diet. I hate the protien shakes. I can't stand the fruit drink. BUT the weight loss makes it all worth wild. GO ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :faint:

    On The Fence

Jared, I agree with the posters who said that ultimately the decision is yours... because it is and it is a huge decision to make and not to be taken lightly. Having 85% of your tummy removed is not an over night thought and I also agree that you should continue to research the procedure, its effects and read all the information you can; here and else where. I am 21mths post op now and personally this is the best thing that I have ever done for myself. I am not at goal yet but that is Ok. Don't get me wrong, I do have more fat left, and I am sure that it will go when it is ready ... but I am getting less stressed about not being a 'goaler' as my overall health and fitness is the best it has been for nearly 20 years. I have NEVER lost more than 7lbs on any given diet or 'life style' change before so to lose 70+lbs is an absolutel miracle for me! My primary reason going into WLS was to get fit and healthy; to be able to exercise and be strong again - I loved exercise when I was in my teens and early 20s but when I started to gain weight, I found it too hard and painful. So, I have acheived that goal regardless of what the scale reads. Now I am here my focus has changed a little, and to my surprise, as I have started to think about 'looking good' again.. didn't think that would happen 2 years ago, but it has and although it is kinda weird, it is good to as I am regaining pride in myself. SO you see, it is not just about weight loss... the process is much more than that. You have to do what is right for you.... you have to think about the pros and cons of this surgery (and others) and make an educated decision as this really is for life. Good luck to you Jared...

    Depressed :-(

Wow, today must be one of those days for the scale. I am sorry the scale hasn't moved, but sometimes that happens. Just know it will move again. Here is an article that I think really explains stalls well. http://www.dsfacts.com/weight-loss-stall-or-plateau.html
  9. 4.5 months post op and concerned the pounds will stop falling off. Doc thinks I might be falling behind the curve too. All the charts show a drastic slow down in months 5,6,7... I'd like to be in onderland by June, but that could be optimistic. If things stay the way they are now, I'll get there, but not if the fat loss slows down. The last three months I've lost 12-13 pounds consistently, so I'm upping my workouts and keeping my calories at or below 900 per day. Thoughts or insights? 11. First of all, congrats on your new band! It's not uncommon for a little weight to return when solid food is reintroduced. Some of this is purely mechanical--there is just MORE stuff in your intestine when you hop on the scale. In terms of when you'll see "real loss," it depends. A lot of people focus on healing at first, and do not really restrict (more than the band forces) their intake until they achieve good restriction. Others of us are more stringent about limiting our intake (yes, dieting) right off the bat...and see losses sooner. Either way, you'll lose. It's easy to have buyer's remorse early in the game, when you're starving and the stupid scale tells lies about what you've gained. But with a little time, you'll start seeing the results. It's well worth the wait!
  12. Hi Kells, Too many of the participants on this forum to count have expressed their self doubts about the band surgery...after the fact. Myself included; the morning after my surgery I remember asking myself "What the h%#& have you done to yourself?" If anything this weight loss journey is self empowering. You are the one who decides how successful you will be...and I speak from experience when I write that we don't know the depths of what strengths we possess until we are tested to tap into them. This journey will be a catalyst to discover and learn more about yourself. For me, I have learned the value of patience...and to take a day at a time. Some days will be more challenging than others...and that's ok...tomorrow will come. To be successful does require change...and specifically that you must change your relationship with food and how you think about it. Incorporating exercise into your life can be a real challenge. I believe we can all be successful if we are motivated to be. If you believed in your abilities to be successful prior to your surgery...those strengths are still there. And as others have written, the journey does become easier with time and getting to the green zone. Best wishes as your journey continues...
  13. ART or IVF is very hard on your body and not something you can do while on a highly restrictive diet, not to mention while recovering from surgery. Getting your hormone levels straight alone would be impossible, making the ART a total waste of money. At 46 your chances of success are not great...you likely know this, but if you are to be successful time is of the essence. Each year your chances go down exponentially. If you want to get pregnant you must do that first. You couldn't even take the meds necessary for ART or IVF after surgery. It's really a no brainer (ok for me cuz I've done both). You have no option but to do the ART first then when you are either successful or you chose to quit trying you can move to VSG. in the mean time you can look to trying a six month weight loss period or diet. That you can do easily while also doing ART. I wish you the best. I know that both are hard roads to travel.

    Pre surgery diet

I always thought the same thing about Weight Loss Surgery -- if I have to diet anyway, why do I need surgery? But after 40 years of yo-yo dieting and failures, I was ready for something else. The difference is that after the sleeve, you're no longer hungry. Medical problems are resolved. The "diet" is no longer a diet -- it is a food plan for someone who eats to live, rather than lives to eat. For me, food no longer has control over me. It's just another thing I do to take care of myself. Because, yes I am worth it. And, by the way, if you had told me 3 months ago that I would be saying this, I would have said you were nuts! Good luck. You can do this. It will be amazing!

    Excited - Approved Today

Hello...I was banded March 28th-2007. So far I have 20 pounds all before the first fill. Now that I had my 1st fill (May-16th-2007). I am ready to go on with my weight loss. I feel slightly different--but not much. I have gotten 20 lbs gone with 87 to go. I started out at 271. I am hoping that by December--I can be in the 180 to 190 area....
  17. I can't get down on myself for enjoying the sampling of a number of many of the choices of traditional Thanksgiving foods which were on the dinner table yesterday. I didn't eat extreme portions, and I did allow myself to have a very small portion of many of the different family tradition menu items which we have every Thanksgiving. I felt the key was to not have too much of anything...and I didn't. These recipes are only prepared once a year, so to miss everything would have left me feeling deprived of a great time and traditions. I know myself well enough to understand that I am able to return to my diet compliance the following day. I also know that celebrating a holiday was not the reason I became obese. Understanding my limits and getting back on track the following day were not a justification or a rationalization for me to stray from my daily routine. Joining in an annual family celebration is an event which I likely would have resented not participating in. I understand that none of us will have perfect daily compliance with what we understand we need to do for weight loss success. I also understand that resentments for not joining in will often sabotage diet compliance. Every day brings choices...yesterday I celebrated Thanksgiving. Today I am back to my compliance with my portions and few carbs. No harm done, and great memories of quality time with cherished family.
  18. Hi Everyone! Misty is a name I've made up. I've been around the boards before, but feel the need to remain annonomous for now. I've been reading and researching various procedures for 2 years roughly. It's been a difficult decision for me to make, but I'm please to have finally made it. I'm 29, married, mother of 2 children. I'm 254 lbs. on a 5'4" frame. I have finally come to the decision that the lapband is the best option for me. I need to lose weight for health reasons but just can't bring myself to the methods of weight loss/maintaince I've used in the past (excessive exercise and starvation). The problem is... My husband is unemployed and we are currently uninsured. So until he becomes employed I'm stuck in limbo knowing what I finally want but unable to pursue it. Any suggestions? I'm really hoping I'm one of those that get things to happen fast once I'm actually able to start. A girl can dream can't she?
  19. I just lay down while he inserts needle then stand up for adjustment. No crunches....I can't imagine that. Thankfully my doctor has got the stick on the first time everytime. I have heard of others having a problem finding it though. I hope it gets better for you. Good luck in your weight loss journey!

    This is me now

Hi! I'll be following you with my band on March 20th. It's an exciting and nerve-wracking time, isn't it? I, too, and viewing this as the end to my inability to maintain my weight loss.
  21. The emotional rollecoaster prior to surgery is not uncommon. :thumbup1: Why we continued to persecute ourselves for our "lack of will power" is kind of nuts--because obese people tend to overmanufacture Gherlin, the hunger hormone, we are hungry all the time. Trying to fight that without surgery is a never ending battle. We would have to literally starve ourselves indefinitely to be successful. It is our will power and determination that allows us to be successful in the short term with weight loss. Many of us have lost 50 to 100 lbs multiple times in our lives on "diets and exercise plans". However, we "fail and regain" what we have lost as soon as we allow ourselves to eat again--our metabolism works against us and our body prefers to store food as fat rather than use it. Those are the reasons that sleeve surgery is such a great tool for us--without the gherlin, we don't feel hungry all the time. That allows us to change our relationship with food and actually eat to live rather than live to eat. Keep posting and finding support on VST. You will be understood and supported here.

    Complications!

3/17/10 had lapband. Never, never, never had a problem with the band that I knew of. The problem I had was my surgeon quit the practice 10 months after I had surgery. Ended up switching to the NP in that WLS clinic. Never once in those three years did they ever fluoroscope that band, only right after surgery. But there again I didn't seem to have any problems, or so I thought. Anyway the nurse was to have called me regarding laps, after waiting six months (I had gotten the laps myself, but she had already po'd me) I switched doctors. He did the fluoroscope and found the band had slipped. I ended up having to have the band out and 10 weeks later had bypass. I did a lot of research during this waiting period, including the complications with the band which is now coming in. The doctor recommended bypass vs sleeve for me because I'm a diabetic and there are better results getting this in remission than with the sleeve. In my research bypass has been so perfected in the past 30 years I had to agree with the doctor. I'm not sorry I had the band as it started my weight loss journey, just wish more research had been done three years ago and I would have eliminated two surgeries. So I would definitely research all the major hospitals, Mayo Clinic, Cleveland, all of them and then determine what would be best for you.

Unfortunately the surgery was canceled due to what the doctor said was excessive contact with second hand smoke due to a urinalysis that was done on the 20th of this month. I was never contacted about this being a problem prior to surgery and they allowed me to wake my family at 2 in the morning , drive almost 2 hours and then even get into the pre op room with my gown and hair net on before they came in after making me wait for over 4 hours to tell me that the surgery was canceled and had to be rescheduled. I did provide a new urine sample and then began to cry uncontrollably. Now I have sworn everyone I know that smokes away from me and I have locked myself in the house until I get a new date for my roux en y surgery. I feel as though I have failed. I have been smoke free for almost 2 years, this was devastating to me today.
  25. I started out with sleeve but ultimately chose RNY. I asked my surgeon which procedures has the greatest success in terms of not regaining weight. He said RNY. For him, sleeve and RNY did not make any difference. It was up to me. He asked me if I liked baked goods. Answer = yes. He again recommended RNY. So I had RNY two weeks ago and I am so glad I did it. It cost me $10k extra (I am self pay). And I am so glad I did RNY. He also said that the risk of complications was only a tiny by higher with RNY versus sleeve. I am very pleads with the decision. I wish everyone success with whatever choices they make in their weight loss journeys!
