  1. I just had my first fill and it was 2cc in a 10 cc band. I know ultimately that the goal is to not be hungry, but right now, between meals or if I go too long between eating, I am starving. Is this normal? I eat the right amount protein and veggies until I am satisfied, but about 2 1/2 - 3 hours later I am so hungry.

    HATE this liquid diet!!!

I'm going to say that I can only imagine! Sounds crappy. My pre-op diet was two whey protein shakes (chocolate flavored) mixed with skim milk and two meals that each consisted of 3 oz. lean protein and a steamed veggie. Post-op wasn't so terrible even though I had 10 days of liquid -- I mean, it was a wide variety of liquid and most of it tasted pretty good. I can see that giving up carbs, caffeine and all your other vices along with things like CHEWING would be pretty awful. At least you're at the very end. Surgery is a speed bump. Down for a couple of days and then you're on your way. GOOD LUCK!
  3. Hi! I am 10 days post gastric bypass surgery, but I am really scared because I am able to eat a lot of yogurt and I’m scared I stretched my pouch! Is this possible or am I spiraling?
  4. I’m just at the start of my 6-month diet for insurance. I’m impatient to have the sleeve, but I’m trying to make the best of the wait and lose as much as I can before the surgery. I’m doing well on my low-carb diet, but exercise is a tough one for me. I’ve been trying to make myself do at least 15 minutes of activity daily (I know it isn’t much, but I’ve been sedentary for so long that 15 minutes is all I can do.) I have some chair exercises that my NUT gave to me, but I’d like to start getting out of the chair and using more of my body. I’ve found that I am ok following along with exercise videos on YouTube for 10-15 minutes, but I often have to modify the exercises into ones that I can do. Does anyone have any favorite exercise videos that they like to use, especially ones that might be better for someone at a higher weight?
  5. Ive been slowly cutting down on portions, cutting out my beloved diet coke, cutting out coffee and upping Water for the last month. I start my 10 day preop liquid in Wednesday. Ive lost 23lbs so far. No way Id be good mentally going cold turkey on everything. I did have a "bucket list" food that I needed one last time. Got a good pizza last night and had 4 slices after being good on 1000 calories for the last few weeks. I made myself chew chew chew forever, partially for practice and partially to savour my most favorite food in the world that I cant have again, atleast not for months. I think you have to start changing habits before hand so its less of a shock mentally Sent from my SM-G900P using the BariatricPal App

  7. I was planning a Gastric Sleeve procedure but was unable to due to Barret's. I had my RNY bypass on July 10 and everything has worked out great. I am down 50# and have decreased my risk of esophageal cancer, amongst other things! I was initially upset about having to change my plans bit once I got used to the idea and educated myself, I went for it. I am so glad that I did! Good luck!
  8. In a new position statement, the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) and the American College of Endocrinology (ACE) have replaced the word “obesity” with “Adiposity-Based Chronic Disease” (ABCD). While that sounds like a clunky switch, the authors have laid out why a simple notion should be replaced with what they call a "complications-centric" approach to the diagnosis and treatment of excess body fat (adiposity). It's more complex than something like BMI. By making this change they have decided to use a new term that puts more emphasis on the chronic diseases that result from excess body fat. Here is a link to the article that discusses this change. http://acsh.org/news/2017/01/20/abcd-obesity-has-new-name-will-it-stop-epidemic-10751
  9. Hey all-- My surgery date was 10/10, so I am more than three weeks post-op. I have been progressing very well, except that I am feeling completely drained. Not tired, but just lacking any energy. I know I have to "give it time" because I just had major surgery, but I stayed home doing nothing for three weeks healing up, and even though I wasn't doing much--zero energy. One thing I haven't seen is anyone talking about severe caloric restriction and its impact on how post-surgery patients feel. Like I said, doing great, lost 25 pounds so far, and expect (hope) to lose another fifty. But I am not taking in more than 500-600 calories a day. My NUT says that even when I am totally healed up the max will be 900-1000. That's a starvation diet, really. I mean, I don't feel starving at all, just...no energy! Anyone experience this and get over it in time, or as you ate more? I'm hopeful. You can call me "Low Energy Leslie"

    Day 10 post op...

Sorry to hear it. I hope things will get better for you. I was sleeved on the 8th and before surgery I thought I could return to work a week later. I have had lots of dizziness, weakness etc and wasn't able to return. I will go back to work too Monday. It has been a rough 9 and 10 days for us. Lets just keep saying to ourselves water, water, water, protein, protein, protein. I saw my MD today and he upgraded me to soft diet. He told me this is the roughest part and about week 4 the light will just turn on for my body and it will flip the switch and it will get much easier. Hang in there.

    Painful Fill

Today was my 1 month follow up and scheduled for my first fill, this week I have been having a flare up due to lupus, overall not feeling good, I was NOT numbed before the poke my dr said " we don't numb anyone because they can be over poked" it was painful! I felt immediate stabbing pain in my back. And the sensation of the fluid running through the port was excruciating. I had to ask her to stop! I couldn't take it anymore. A 10/10 pain. And I have a high tolerance to pain. I'm wondering has anyone else experienced pain like this, it's probably that my body is sensitive and hurting because of my flare up :/
  13. I am on day 9 of a 2 week pre-op liq. diet, I do EAS AdvatEDGE shakes. They only have 2 net carbs and 17g of Protein (lucky me my surgeon requires low carsd, Protein Shakes only). The chocolate seems to be the best, and I think I am going to take the advice of someone up there and put it in the freezer! Initial Eval: 09/08 Post-Op: 01/09 LAGB: 02/09/09

    Never did my intro

I had my surgery with Dr. ATkinson on 12/20/08 and am to goal with losing 90 pds. Good luck and you are in good hands with Dr. Atkinson. I was very pleased with the Dr and his staff and never regretted the decision. I go on this website very single morning and have been for the last 2 1/2 yrs and I can't seem to find anybody that has the band for over 10 years. I guess I should not have to worry since I am 58 but if I were young, you might want to ask these questions before and decide on what surgery you want after that. I never had any fills and I have read that the life of the band is somewhat extended from not getting it filled/unfilled. I have read that getting too much of a fill over time sometimes causes slippage and I am not sure what actually causes that. Regardless, I am thrilled to have the band but if I was younger I would certainly weigh the pros and cons on permanent surgery that cannot be removed or eroded down the road. Good luck on your choice and you are starting out with one of the best doctors around.
  16. Hello everyone. First I want to thank all of you wonderful folks who have helped me through this process. This forum has seen me the whole way through my decision and the surgery. I usually don't post because I like to read but today I am having a really rough day. It's my fault...I went back to work one week after surgery and over did it. I then developed a horrible sinus infection and had to stay out of work anyway...without pay. I am still in a lot of pain and had to go back on my pain meds. Yesterday I slept all day and did not get in any Protein and hardly fluids. Today almost the same but I have a huge gallon Water jug almost connected to me lol. I was doing so well with fluids and protein until the sinus crap. Now I am lucky if I ger 40 oz of fluids. I just wanted to vent. I saw here on the forums that water/fluids is most important in the beginning so I dont dehydrate so I am focusing on that. I feel sooooooo weak...unfortunately my 6 and 2 yr old kids don't quite get that. I also read that I will be tired for a few weeks as well. Anyway...sleeve family pray for my recovery this weekend...I HAVE to go back to work Monday. On a good note....I have lost 14 pounds since May 7. Thank you for your stories and for your prayers!!! May 7...here I come!!

    Newbie

Hi! My name is Blair and I just turned 29 (female) Sorry it's a weird time I just couldn't sleep! I was banded yesterday! And I was like you excited but very nervous! I also had never udergone surgery! Never been put to sleep or anything! I was actually suppose to have my surgery April 27th and was sooo nervous about being put to sleep I chickened out and cancelled it! Luckily my time hadn't run out and I didn't have to start all back over when I finally decided I really wanted to do it! I don't know about your goal weight loss but mine is like 60lbs at the max...so I had a lot of people confusing me saying that I didn't need it (not bragging) cause according to the "WII" game I am in the "obese" precentile! I am 5'6 213lbs But I am one of those solid kinda people, if you see what I am saying. I was atheletic and a size 6-8 10 years ago when I graduated highschool!! So...that naturally is my goal to be back to that atheletic woman instead of this "couch potatoe!!" LOL Anyway, I just wanted to tell you my story to try and help! Oh, and like I was so stoked and ready when I went in and was fine not nervous a bit! When I woke up I sqawled!! Cried like a baby! Thanking the Lord that I was awake and alive! I was that worried! But it was weird because I was perfectly fine before the surgery, laughing and cutting up with the nurses! But anyway, if you need anyone to talk to, just send me a message! Oh and it's not as bad as you are thinking, like I said I was banded yesterday! And my Doc actually chose the "Realize" band for me once he did the surgery. I don't really think there is a a lot of difference. He just said he wanted me to be able to eat more meats and vegtables!?? But anyway, I am not really that sore just a little and not that hungry! Just take the pain meds they give you even if you don't think you need them. Just my opinion! Anyway, sorry this is so long! Just wanted to give ya a little encouragement! Let me know if you ever want to talk! Good Luck!

Las Vegas Bariatrics - Dr. Bernie Hanna

Ok, so my surgery was June 26. I flew out there (alone) from Maryland on Sunday night, June 23. I stayed at the MGM Signature because I had stayed there a few years ago and I liked it since the elevator wasn't too far from the hotels entrance. Monday morning I had a dr appt to get my clearance for surgery. I cant remember this DR's name but DR hanna's office set it up for me. Luckily my insurance covered this visit. They did an EKG, went over health history, etc. then gave me a lab slip for a chest xray. The next day I visited with DR Hanna for the first time. Everyone at his office is so friendly. He went over everything that was going to happen, etc. Also, I had started my clear liquid diet Monday AM. And my husband arrived Tuesday evening. Wednesday I arrived at the hospital (North Vista) at 7 am which looked like a dump. I was feeling a little uneasy at this point at the looks of the hospital, but not for long. The hospital is SO accommodating. I was appointed a Bariatric coordinator who showed us around. I went into the operating room at 930am. I was never once scared or nervous until I got onto the OR table and they started strapping my arms down and giving my oxygen. Last I looked at the clock was 9:38. I woke up at 10:20. Feeling very nauseated. Wheeled into recovery, stayed there maybe 30-40 mins. Then went back to the outpatient room where my husband was waiting for me. I tried walking the halls but everytime I got out of bed I felt like id be sick so all I wanted to do was lay around and sleep. Finally at 2pm a nurse recommended that we go back to the hotel. The first afternoon/night was a breeze. I slept pretty much the rest of the day. Did not want to walk at ALL. Gas wasn't that bad, not as bad as I had expected. The second day, sucked, big time. I tried once to take a teaspoon of the liquid pain meds but they made me throw up so I didn't touch them after that.. I had my follow up that day because I was leaving vegas on Friday. It was all I could do to get dressed and go to the DR office. He checked my incisions and gave me a rx for the stomach spasms I was having. I flew out of Vegas Friday morning. I do not recommend this if you are flying in from another state. It was a 5 hour flight. VERY uncomfortable. Couldn't eat anything really. It was awful. DR Hanna called me one week post op, I missed it and called him back. He didn't answer. He never returned my call and I haven't heard from him since that follow up visit at his office which I thought was kind of unprofessional. But I haven't had one single problem so I guess there's no point in calling him anyway. I'd definitely recommend him, he is a gentle, soft spoken man. My experience was great and I love his office staff. Esp. Zee she is great. I email her questions all the time and she replies within minutes! I hope this all made sense, if you have any other questions please don't hesitate to ask!

    Tortillas?

Have you ever tried the low carb wraps, Flat Out? I am only a week out, so I cannot try them yet but I used to eat them often while low carbing. They make several varieties in the 7 - 10 carb range.
  21. Hey Jeni! You can do it! i found a non-fat greek yogurt at Central Market (i live in texas, but i know whole foods or other specialty stores carry it... you can probably google too) called Fage. I mix a tiny bit of honey or even sugar free jelly in it. It has 20 grams of protein per 1 cup serving... so 10 if you only eat 1/2 cup. I have found that it helps me make it to lunch. also, from my adkins days, i have returned to the fat free ricotta for a bit of sweet, and good source of calcium and protein. Just some ideas. i ate 4 hersey's kisses today, so i too am feeling guilty. it's amazing, i know better, i just couldn't say no. tomorrow will be a better day!
  22. I know how you feel .I was banded on 12/19 and Had my 1st fill on 1/30 and no restriction still. I am very discouraged. people said it takes up to 2-4 fills before you feel restriction. I have another fill next week. I'll keep you posted.

    I got sleeved today!

Don’t be too worried. I also scar so very easily. But I’ll definitely take 4 little scars than a shorter lifespan! Just realize that the first days will probably suck in one way or another. Like I said, the gas was the worst for me. I was lucky and had zero nausea. I was told I woke up immediately when they stopped running the anesthesia which they were surprised by. I remember two things from the moment I was rolling out of the surgery to the recovery. 1. I said “I’m going to throw up!” and the nice anesthesia nurse said “No you’re not.” and gave me something in my IV. Nausea gone, never to return. Then she asked me to rate my pain on a 1-10 scale. I said 7? And then I took a breath and the worst pain I’ve ever felt stabbed me from inside the left side of my tummy. I started to cry. She immediately ran 2 doses of Demerol and had me roll onto my right side. Bam! Pain gone. I’ve always been very stoic and had a very high pain tolerance. I fell down 8 wooden porch stairs and a portion of my upper cheek was sliced open. I shattered my nose, orbital socket, cheek bone, had a concussion ect. I never even cried. So, I figured I don’t want to say I have a 10 pain scale when I figured that’s reserved for like amputation or something. That was my mistake. Don’t be afraid to say your pain is high. The second bout of pain was around 7 pm the night of surgery. It was sudden with no explanation. I just immediately curled into a ball and my eyes watered. Fortunately my mom was there and called the nurses in a second. She knows that pain never really bothers me and that to be acting like that things were bad. They gave 5mg of OxyContin. During the night I had a dose of Roxicet as well. And that was it. But, I. WALKED. ALL. NIGHT. I mean all night. I got about 90 minutes of sleep during my 24 hours in the hospital. And I peed all night long too. They gave us 3 IV’s over 24 hours. 2 just fluids and 1 vitamin bag. I made sure that at dinner I got in 4 oz of broth and 2 oz of unsweetened tea. They also gave me a constant supply of ice water and 2 small cups of SF jello at both meals. I would save the jello and take tiny bites in between each 2-3 laps of the floor. At the meeting of WLS patients prior to release, I was far and away the one who looked and felt the best. I was the last surgery of the day, but the first to be released. So my advice is to accept that there’s going to be pain, and do your best to just soldier through it. Get up and walk walk walk. I’m 3 days out now, and I walk a little further each night. Today I was able to walk the dog for 30 minutes and wasn’t even tired. I swear the dog is in worse shape than I am! [emoji23] I do sleep a lot, and I’m in no way getting 64 oz of fluid, but I did get almost 400 calories and 37g of protein in today. Water is actually the most difficult thing for me to get down. I take 750 mg of Tylenol twice a day and that it. I don’t have to crush my pills or anything else. The only pain I have now is incision pain. Tylenol takes care of that. My first day home I did get my first case of the slimes and foamies. Now I know how to keep that from happening. I still take gas x twice a day. I’m way less bloated and swollen already and I started losing weight today. All in all, it’s been pretty great. But when you get out of surgery and it hurts like the devil, just remind yourself that the pain in so very temporary and you won’t even remember how severe it really was a few days later. I know everyone has different experiences, but I thought I’d share more of mine with you. My only complaint is that I still can’t get into and out of my bed. But luckily we have a sun room with a reclining couch and large tv so I’m able to stay comfortable all the time. It has a door that I hung a sheet on to get privacy from the rest of the house, so I’m not bothered by others. And yes, I have a hair trigger temper. I get crabby in .6 seconds flat. But since the nurse coordinator told my parents about that happening for at least a month, they were prepared and have done well ignoring me when it happens. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask me. I’m an open book so nothing is off limits. Good luck on your journey! HW: 311 SW: 255 CW: 254 First goal weight: 191 lbs Second goal weight: 159 lbs Goal weight: 142 lbs 5’6” 34 yo female in NC
  24. Your fat requirements are going to be very different than mine as an RNY. I'd really want your RD or doc to tell me what ratios they want for their DS patients. I know that your protein reqs are also way diff than mine. For mine and most VSGs the loose rule of thumb for protein is 1g protein per every 10 calories. So if you have ideally a recipe with 160cals, it needs to have a minimum of 16 g protein to be a good protein bargain for the buck. Then beyond that the only rule they gave is no more than 5g sugar per serving/meal. Any other rule was individual from them and based on status and how we were doing with our diet, diet satisfaction, and if we were losing and/or maintaining and progressing well. I had to be very low fat and low carb/low cal to lose. So I'm a big outlier.
  25. So am I interpreting this correctly because the corollary would be that those of us who are overweight lacked meaning and purpose in life beyond food? and I don't see myself that way. I have always had a strong sense of purpose, meaning and goals in my life. I knew what I wanted to be professionally when I was 12--a psychologist working in advertising. I was told there was no such thing, but here I am, doing just that. At 12 I decided to adopt, and I did. At 10 years old, I knew I would leave my country and live abroad, and I did. This sense of goals and purpose has continued throughout my life--yet I was overweight. While I agree that being thin doesn't solve all ills, I also don't think weight loss is simply a matter of finding purpose in life? Am I misunderstanding the article?
