Band or Sleeve? So confused :(

That was the longest appointment ever lol feeling very happy! Have decided on the band, doctor said being young and other then my weight in very healthy he is reluctant to do a sleeve due to its permanence he said 80% of his patients who get the band have great success and that he thinks it's the best option for me in fact he said he wouldn't recommend the sleeve for me at all, he said in some cases 5 or so years down the line if the weight loss isn't where we want we can look at revision to a sleeve but he wants to leave that as a last resort Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Hello

I had GERD pretty bad for years and sick multiple times a week due to past vertical banding. My revision to RNY went well, and the GERD is gone and I can now eat healthy foods and have no more issues---It feels so good. Hope it works as well for you.
  3. On the other hand if you have a problem with heartburn and gerd prior to surgery make sure your surgeon knows that....I certainly understand the thought that by-pass is more drastic but you don't want to have sleeve and end up having to have it revised to by-pass because of gerd.....just talk it over with your surgeon and let them advise you based on your individual needs and condition. best of luck to you!!!
  4. Was sleeved in the states July 2014 gained all my weight back my fault started grazing. Getting revision to mini bypass. Sent from my LG-K450 using BariatricPal mobile app

Are the insurance requirments the same?

I figured I'd follow up on my post. I got the call today that the revision is covered. The only things I need to do are the Nutritional Counseling, Psych Eval and get a letter of medical necessity and medical clearance from my PCP. I do still have to have a BMI of 35+ with a co-morbidity or just a BMI of 40. Which means I technically need to gain 8 lbs. But someone on another page recommended that I just wear some 10lb ankle weights to my weigh in appt. lol. I'm starting college on Monday so I'll be shooting for mid March, during my spring break from school, to get the surgery done. Just wanted to let ya'll know what happened with it.

    Please HELP!

Have they scoped him? I was thinking stricture, but perhaps not, So extreme gerd?? Here's a thread about a recents sleever with extreme gerd, it happens sometimes .... http://www.verticalsleevetalk.com/topic/77969-sleeve-revision-to-gastric-bypass-tomorrow/
  7. While specific insurance policies may differ, typically the industry standards of 40BMI (or 35 with co-morbidities such as hypertension or sleep apnea) still apply. I have seen some that cover the revision with lower BMI if there was a mechanical problem with the band - slippage, erosion, etc. Any chance that you have developed any of those co-morbidities since your last surgery? It would be a shame and counterproductive to have to gain weight to qualify to lose weight, but that is sometimes how the game has to be played (ankle weights, anyone?) The psych evaluation is pretty much a standard provision, though the requirements for nutritional and exercise programs vary widely. Somebody in the process (the hospital or surgeon's practice typically) will usually want the deductible up front and sometimes an estimate of the copay as well.
  8. I actually had my band done in Mexico in 2008. I decided to have the revision from band to sleeve early this year. I completed the 6 month requirement that UHC had and just got approved for the revision on last week. Took 2 days!! Don't give up!!
  9. Well, I had the procedure on Tuesday. Woke up in the ICU so they could monitor bleeding issues. Pain was pretty intense when I woke up. They had me stay an extra night in the hospital, but eventually moved me to a regular room once i pooped and had a positive upper GI xray. I'm back on a clear liquid diet for the next couple weeks, then it's into full liquids. Christmas is gonna be a pain in the ass. Since I wasn't resleeved, and can't find many people who have had SIPS as a revision to VSG, so I'll try to post my experience here. Day 2 post op... 6 incisions, painful shoulder gas, hurts to stand, get a little nauseous and tired when walking... but I'm doing it . 6'2" 354lbs going into surgery. 356 today, but I think that's normal. The drop should start in a day or two. I'm currently coughing and hicupping a lot, which hurts like hell. Also, I wasn't given pain meds (for reasons listed above). I'll post more as it happens.

Upper GI done, hopefully one step closer

One individual in our Bariatric Support Group Meeting had a band to RNY gastric bypass surgery revision because his band was wearing away into his stomach and the condition became life threatening.

    First Week at Home Question

I had revision surgery on Wednesday and cooked for my family on Sunday. I didn't need any help at all. Actually would have preferred to be alone. Lol
  12. I'm scheduled for revision on August 29 - a Monday...taking the week off and then will have Labor Day off as well. My husband will be there for surgery and 2 days in hospital and bring me home...but then has an event out of town on Thursday that he wants to go to over the weekend. I was single when I had the lapband done and managed just fine. I have friends I can call. I am fine with him leaving, but just wanted to get some reassurance for both him and me. He feels bad (sort of) and I want him to go. Just need some idea of the condition I'll be in that first week. Thanks
  13. Dr Aceves did my band to sleeve revision about a year ago. Glad you did so wonderfully. Like you I had very little pain and couldn't believe it was so uneventful. I don't mind flying but was really surprised that it was only 3 days after surgery and I felt no pain on the flight and it was from San Diego to FL with a 3 hour layover in Dallas. Good Luck on your journey.

Can Army Veterans Get This Procedure?

I assume you mean through your military benefits, and not civilian? If so, Tricare started covering the sleeve effective 2010. I'm not sure what their current requirements are for surgery or for revision, but I know that in 2010 my father had to have his lap-band removed and wanted a revision to a sleeve but it was denied. I'm pretty sure they do require a 6 month supervised diet. There are some MTFs that perform the surgery but I have no idea which. Try searching "tricare" here and you will find some good information. recovery from revision

I had my revision from band to bypass in one procedure less than 2 weeks ago. I already feel ready for vacation! Everyone heals differently, just don't get a set date in your head for feeling 100%, as you may disappoint yourself. You will be ready to go by vacation time!

    Need a buddy!

Good morning from Anchorage Alaska! Congratulations on your surgery! You are on a life long journey for a healthier you. Bypass is a tool that I believe God has given us to use. What a blessing! I had Gastric Bypass 16 months ago on the 16th of this month. I have lost more weight than my surgeon told that I would and have had to revise my weight loss goal! He told me I would loose 75 pounds, I have lost 100 pounds and feel great! Well, with following orders and exercising, Protein and Water I have exceeded his prediction. When I went for my last doctor visit my blood work showed that my body was absorbing nutrients very well, so well that my doctor asked what kind of Vitamins I was taking and I told him the bariatric vitamins and some of my own that I had previously taken. He asked me not to take vitamins everyday for the next 6 months but only once per week. I was 61 when I had my bypass and am now 62 and glad that I did it. My family was afraid for me at first. But I did my research before the surgery and was able to put their mind at ease. I exercise and get in at least 60 grams of protein each day with sips of water every 10 to 15 minutes. I have had no physical or medical complications from the surgery. I now realize how much time and energy I have spent in the past relating to food. I no longer do that! That's freedom! I have cravings sometimes but I look at where I was and compare it to where I am and decide if I am really hungry or if I'm experiencing head hunger. Usually real hunger is for natural foods not carbs or sugary foods. When you follow the protocols for this surgery it works and you develop new habits that can carry you through the rest of your life. Scripture and Prayer has helped me. Scriptures like Galatians 5:1 and Philippians 4:13. I plan to live this way for the rest of my life. How about you? Again Congratulations to you. Love to hear from you! Vickiebc

    Do I Smell Different?

I'm anxious to hear what is said about Gene pro too, as it's on my list of approved protein supplements, and I'm doing well with it twice a day. I love that it's unflavored & I add it to crystal light, dissolves great. I'm 2 weeks out Lapband revision with Gastric bypass. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G870A using BariatricPal mobile app

    Thinking about Lap Band surgery

Most doctors won't do lap band anymore because the results aren't very good - most people don't lose too much weight and many people have a lot of complications. A lot of people end up having to have them removed and getting it revised to sleeve or bypass. Is there a reason you really want lap band rather than sleeve or bypass?
  19. I am a band to sleeve revision, and knew that I would not be successful in my weightloss efforts without surgical intervention. I chose the sleeve vs. RNY for these reasons: 1) instant restriction (no maintenance, fills, unfills) 2) No malabsorption issues 3) Little to no stomach stretching 4) Portion control with the ability to eat what I wanted I couldn't be happier with my results with the sleeve, and know in my heart of hearts that I made the right decision for my life. I wish you the very best, and welcome to the forum. There are a lot of band to revision patients on the board, and you'll probably get lots of input.
  20. Petepotamus - I can't help you with any information regarding a revision from band to sleeve. I did, however, want to welcome you to the forum and I am sure you will find a lot of information here that will help you make your decision. Good luck.

    Denied and Distraught

I feel your pain. I just got my denial today. I have BCBS of IL. I got a lap band in 2010 and was self pay. The band IS NOT for me. I should have gotten RNY from the start, but I was looking at the monetary bottom line, and the band was cheaper. I now have BCBS with bariatric benefits, yet they told me there isn't significant failure of the band to warrant a revision. I had an upper GI that shows the acid reflux is burning my esophagus, plus I have a dilated pouch with constant vomiting. HOW DO WE BEAT THE INSURANCE??????????????????

    October Surgery Buddies

  23. Alright, I am having my lap band to gastric sleeve revision on November 20th. I would love if those that have already had the revision or the gastric sleeve to help me out. What do I need to do/purchase in order to be fully prepared? What Vitamins do I need? What Protein shakes/powders, etc? What items should I take to the hospital? What other advice would you give me? What did you wish someone had told you before you had surgery? Any and all help, opinions, and advice are welcomed.

    Band or Sleeve

Check the Band to Sleeve revision board here on VST. Lots of us can tell you our stories about the band. Some never had success with it, some had some weight loss but lots of problems getting food down or keeping it down. I had success for 3 years, but my band broke after my pregnancy in 2010. Currently the statistics are showing that the band won't be in you forever even though they market it that way: 55% of patients have had it removed by 5 years, usually for erosions, slips, or failure to lose weight. I'm surprised surgeons are still offering the band at all. Of course, everyone here will pretty much be biased toward the sleeve. Have you checked out Lap Band Talk? You'll find more people who like their bands there...but also, a lot of people looking to revise it.
  25. Great to hear! I initially was seeking revision to sleeve, but with my history of GERD problems and with the scarring from my band, my new surgeon told me that I would most likely would have the same problems with the sleeve. He also said the surgery with the bypass would be easier versus the sleeve. Looking forward to bypass and I have a great support system. Looks like you have done well with your bypass, Congrats!!!
