Do any one know how easy it is to get approval for a lap-band revision to RNY through Highmark BCBS TN or if they even cover it? Approval was easy for the lap-band but wasn't sure about revision surgery. I have to have lap-band removed and wait 3 months and have revision. Not sure if they (BCBS) would count as having 2 surgeries and would pay for the removal but not the revision. I checked the website and it seems unclear to me and I am afraid to call them and ask or do the physician's office take care of submitting whatever is needed to check for coverage and what percentage? I know my questions sound redundant but I am really seeking sincere advise. Thank you in advance!

Foodies - honestly how bad is it?
Healthy_life2 replied to Ruth9454's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Straight talk…Get a copy of your surgeons/directions plan and food progression for clarification. You need to know if this is something you can stick to. You have to want this enough to change. I hope you go into this with realistic expectations. Just because a few people on this site can eat anything and not gain weight does not mean that will be your personal experience. Many don’t keep the weight off long term eating what they want and relying on restriction alone. If you eat off plan and notice it slows/stops your weight loss you many need to stick to your dietician food plan. (read all the posts on regain and revision) I’m five years out. I maintain in the 130’s. I had to work for this. I followed my plan. I was consistent not perfect. I got to goal in six months ( not the norm with the sleeve) How bad is it if you enjoy food? I love food and I don’t feel deprived. I enjoy trying new recipes and ingredients. I make healthy versions of old favorites. I go to restaurants and social events. It easy to find protein and veggies and other items on my plan that keep me in weight loss mode. I also stay within my weight loss/ maintaining calories and macros. Your diet will change when you go into maintenance mode. You will be adding more carbs and can indulge within reason. Stomach issues: Most sleeves can tolerate anything without dumping syndrome (sleeve surgery intestines are not altered) Other surgeries once sugar hits the intestine they dump. Only my opinion. If you can’t control sugar and food choices, the sleeve many not be a good fit for you. -
Ok now I have my surgery date which is June 3 however I paid my doctor the $221.27 for whatever I had to pay I can’t remember. Now today the hospital called and informed me that I have to pay 2,821.00 on the date of my surgery or I can’t have it. I told that lady why in the hell would I just not receive this information some people don’t have that type of money. She said we will only accept half and we will bill you for the rest ok but still I don’t have $1400. This is crazy because I should have known this information way before now. When I had the sleeve my doctor had the hospital to tell me what I would have to pay out of pocket and they put me on a three month payment plan before I had my surgery. I actually thought that I wouldn’t have to pay since it was deem medical reason for the revision to bypass. My insurance company said that I hadn’t met my in network out of pocket deductible which is $5,500 some of these insurance companies are complete riff off.

I'm 60. Anyone else over 50 doing RNY?
Lolo 2020 replied to Pam Peltz's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hey I hat a hiatal hernia repair and did a gastric sleeve at the same time . Thought it would cure my acid reflux but although I’ve lost 62 lbs and am a normal BMI my acid reflux is worse ! What’s up with that ? Does it mean I will have to eventually do a revision ? I don’t eat a lot of dense foods , mostly shakes , cottage cheese , fish and yogurt but sometimes it’s really bad , particularly at night. Anyone have any advice ? -
Hi all!! I was revised from VSG to RNY for severe GERD on 3/18. My pre-op diet weight was 251 and today it is 216.6. Weight loss has slowed and I’ve had a few stalls. Shark week sucks because I gain despite changing nothing. Slow and steady is better for my body but my mind doesn’t agree and that is a daily struggle. How are all the other VSG to RNY revisions doing?
-
Did you get the sleeve or RNY?? I had sleeve 2 5 yrs ago and am waiting for approval from the insurance company for RNY revision surgery due to reflux. I have heard several people who had RNY revision surgery have an early stall but some are not getting enough calories in as well. Hopefully you will start losing again soon. If you're concerned about it call your Nutritionist and ask questions about your food intake and fluids. They may have suggestions for you. Good luck, Allie in SC

This seems like sensible advice. With respect to some people giving advice that are still only 5 or 6 months post-op (like me), telling someone that is 7 years post op to drop down to 800 calories a day is not good advice and it's not reasonable. It's easy to say that when you have lots of restriction. I am 5 months out and I couldn't live on 800 calories at this point--no f--ing way!!! I am eating at least 1500 a day, but I am eating healthy and I am working out 2 hours a day. It's working well for me and I am pretty much where I want to be in terms of weight and health. However, I know that if I am not careful I could end up back where I was before surgery and I would want to get back to where I am now by any means necessary. As for the pouch reset, I guess it can't hurt. However, there's no evidence that the so-called "pouch reset" actually does anything to reset your "pouch"--which we don't even have since that is a RNY thing. Also, to say it's OP's fault for not following the guidelines after 7 years is very unfair. Sh!t happens!!! 7 years is a long time and any of us can end up in OP's position. The fact is the VSG is great, but it's not enough for everyone. There are other procedures that may be better for OP and that's for her and her doctor to discuss. Revision exists because a high percentage of bariatric patients regain for lots of different reasons.

hi mimi, please tell me what it is like having a revision from lapband to sleeve? Do you have acid reflux or vomiting like I have with band? I have had the band for 15 years, it helped me lose weight and keep it off but I vomit all the time. I damaged my esophagus and I have to have it taken out. One doctor suggests sleeve and another mini GBP. WHich one is better?

Anyone Else Have Nighttime Reflux Coughing Or Vomitting?
Lelina replied to Bekah_GA's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hi mike54, I have 'choking' from the band at night and a lot of vomiting during the day and night. I had gastroscopy and it proved that my esophagus is all pebly instead of smooth. The Doctor took biopsy and luckily I don't have cancer. He loosened the band and suggested revision surgery. Now it is up to me to decide whether it will be sleeve or mini GBP. Did you have revision and if you did how is it with the reflux now? -

Congratulations on your journey and weight loss. I also had a hernia repair when I had my sleeve surgery and it was back almost immediately. You're doing great. I am almost 64 and need RNY REVISION SURGERY after my sleeve surgery 2.5 years ago. HW 318 SW 287 CW 225 I have gone down to 199.8 and then started gaining weight again. I never had a problem eating even a whole sandwich. I drink constantly and now crave things I never ate before. Chips, icecream and just junk. Grrrr, salt intake is way too high seems like I can't get enough. My reflux has become so much worse than it was before I started. It's crazy. Now waiting approval for the RNY revision surgery from my 2 insurance companies. I am absolutely miserable and can't wait for the approval and surgery date. I'm concerned about the surgery but I know I have to have it. Good luck Allie in SC Sent from my SM-G960U using BariatricPal mobile app

Lap band vs VSG for 37 BMI
GreenTealael replied to Tlily730's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Hi there! You will be hard pressed to find a reputable surgical team that will suggest lapbands anymore (It was not even an option at my practice only revision surgery from lapband to something else was offered) As for the type of surgery you choose, I would suggest a frank conversation with your team regarding your specific realistic likely outcome & about all the factors that will influence this (that they have seen such as age, genetics, race, medical issues, gender, etc) and ask a ton of questions including revision/recidivism rates for the surgeries they offer (no one really wants 2 surgeries when 1 will do), longest term success rates, most/least complications, most managable post op lifestyle, GERD & hair loss, etc then go with the best option for you. Good luck -

I’m revising from sleeve to SIPS and was told by my doctor that I need 6 months medically supervised diet psych evaluation and all the other fun stuff. I called my insurance today and they told me there’s no requirement except I have to go through a different dept. which basically guides you through and make sure you are ready for surgery. I’ve had WLS twice. From band to sleeve and I’ve never heard this before. I have UHC. Has anyone else ever been told that??

“Was the bypass harder to get used to? I also am revising from the sleeve because of a hiatal hernia and terrible acid reflux.“ That is the reason I got it done. And also as my sleeve was not stopping food quantities, but mostly because of the hernia/reflux issue. Bit early to say how it is going. I am only just over a week out of surgery and still on liquid/mushies. Since I went on the pre-operation diet, I’ve lost over 6 kgs (about 13.5 lbs). I guess I won’t know until I can start eating normal food. Trying to keep the protein up at the moment of course. -

1) Because a revision to another method might indeed be helpful. 2) Because sometimes people need a second chance to get things right.

WTG, your on your way. Thanks for posting your progress. All my tests are back waiting for approval from the insurance companies for the RNY revision surgery. I can't wait. Allie

It might be, but probably not. Presumably, the doc has prescribed omeprazole, or similar PPI medication for it. The sleeve is predisposed toward reflux problems as the stomach volume is reduced much more than the acid producing capacity, and it takes a while for the body to adjust (doesn't mean that one will have that problem, just that the odds are higher than the general population, in comparison, the bypass is predisposed toward marginal ulcers, dumping and reactive hypoglycemia, so there are potential problems with whatever procedure one chooses. ) Usually, the problem goes away as the body adjusts, but sometimes it doesn't completely and one needs to stay on some type of medication for it, or in extreme cases, revise the surgery.

I guess I should have been more specific. You have reposted the same question about your regain situation. Two threads of the same post with several people giving advice. Here is the link to the first time you posted this question. https://www.bariatricpal.com/topic/425456-gastric-sleeve-revision/?tab=comments#comment-4777993

I'm not being mean here, but my question is this . . . if the tool of surgery didn't work the first time, why would a revision work the second time? It's all in your hands now, isn't it? To eat the right number of calories and to exercise are still going to be your job after WLS. I think you can do it. Do a pouch reset. Eat 600-800 calories/day. Get out and walk. Drink that 64 oz of water each day. Eat your protein first. Go back to the basics and I'll bet you can get there.
