    Desperate for protien

Best bets for high protien and mushy diet friendly are Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, egg salad, refried beans, and even a softer cheese like baby bel. I did a lot if the above for the first 2 months. I would let the babybel get kind of warm and then it is nice and soft and actually more flavorful. Melts in your mouth.

    Travel after WLS

I am almost 6 weeks out and went to a concert and stayed overnight in a hotel. I took a little cooler with protein drinks, cottage cheese and Greek yogurt. However I did find some reasonable options at the restaurants. So used my extras for breakfast and snacks.

    Skipping ahead of myself

I am 12 days post op and my doctor said I could try to ease soft foods in slowly. I tried a string cheese eating very slowly. I must have bitten off more than I should and I honestly thought I was going to die. I was in severe pain and burning up with nausea. I had to pull over while driving a half hour after and walk around until it passed. I am back to yogurt and shakes for awhile. It definitely made me not want to try anything more so soon. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  4. Wow, 3 meals/day with no snacks would be difficult for me. I have 1/2 an apple or orange midmorning and other half mid afternoon or string cheese, yogurt, a vegetable, etc.-something sensible but it prevents stomach acid and nausea for me. It also helps maintain a good blood sugar level in my case. We’ve each got different issues to deal with so makes sense plans can be different. I told doc I want my plan to be something I can live with long term and this works. Continued success and best wishes to you!
  5. March 9th doing very well off all pain meds on day four. Had three surgeries gastric bypass, hernia and gallbladder removal. Am excited for my one week post op appt to be off liquids and eat some yogurt or something other than water or broth lol.

How much protein do I need???

I agree 110% with JJSMILES. We all get very frustrated with the conflicting advice everyone gets from the nutritionists and docs. In the end, it's what will work for you long term. I'm approaching my 1 year band anniversary, and have lost 70+ lbs in that time. I did this by eating as normally as my band will allow. Here's my typical menu: B: coffee w/ cream (can't do it without cream); All Bran Honey & Nut Cereal (11 g fiber); some fresh fruit and a bit of milk. S: cheese string or yogurt (don't always have a snack) L: leftovers from the night before or a Lean Cuisine meal S: All Bran Bites, yogurt or cheese string D: a meat, vegetable and a bit of starch S: a treat... usually a cookie or ice cream or chips. When I log my day on thedailyplate.com, it usually comes out at about 1000 to 1200 cals, based on my quantities. Sometimes I get high in Protein, sometimes not... but its usually pretty balanced. If I followed the "all protein only" plan, it wouldn't last long for me because I love my veggies and fruit... its what keeps me happy. Exercise is also key, which is why I haven't lost more in my first year. I haven't been exercising all that much. But that changed this last week, and now I've committed to an exercise plan. Good luck to all of the new bandsters... I love my band, and know it literally saved my life.

How much protein do I need???

I eat a lot of cottage cheese. I can eat about 4-6 ounces per meal. The nutritionist recommends 2-4 ounces 3 times a day. So, basically I am on 90 percent Protein and 10 percent complex carbs. My calorie count is probably somewhere between 600-800 right now. I use protein supplements and Multivitamins, B complex, Calcium and D Vitamin. I eat a lot of string cheese for Snacks. I eat eggs, yogurt, deli turkey slices, cheese, chicken, and I have added a whole grain Cereal to try to get more fiber. I eat Beans - refried and kidney, sausage, bacon, chili, Soups, broccoli, Protein Bars, fish and hamburgers without the bread. I use to keep a journal daily - now I just jot down notes. You are certainly eating better than I am and I need to eat more to prevent my body from shutting down the weight loss. My problem is that I am short and I cannot eat as many calories as others can. Normally, I probably can't have more than 1200 calories per day. If so, I will gain weight. It is a little depressing but that is just the way it is. If I go exercise crazy I can eat more and I have done that but it is a lot of work and maintenance - we are talking Richard Simmons. Lots of luck to you.

    3 Days Post-Op, My Experience

Congratulations! I had my surgery on Monday, April 24th...so I'm six days post-op today. I too have the lovenox injections, twice a day. They're not as bad as I thought. I inject them into my lower stomach, alternating sides per shot. The worse part for me is that in my main incision site, where they take the stomach, and in my case, the gallbladder too, they had to leave it open. So that means, twice a day, my husband has to pack it with gauze and the incision is probably three inches deep. I guess the doctor did this because my gallbladder was full of stones and infected and he had the hardest time trying to get it out. He was afraid of an infection, so I guess this is how they head that challenge on--packing a wound . I will say my right side where they took my gallbladder out, and where my drain was, are the two areas where I have pain, other than that, I'm pretty good. I will say, six days out is 100% better than 3 days out. It's amazing how fast the body heals itself. An hour after I got to my room they put me on clear fluids, which all I could do was sip some water here and there, and by the second day I've been on pureed foods. So, as I'm writing this, I have my quarter cup of Oikos greek yogurt that I'm working on. Everyday it's getting easier to get food down, like a quarter of a scrambled egg this morning, but I'm not hitting 64 grams of protein or anything. It's not easy getting the protein and fluids down, but our bodies need both badly to heal itself and so we have to chug along. Good luck and it only gets easier--concentrate on that!!! Oh, and edit to add that I went off my pain meds as soon as I got home. I think that was the best thing ever. I had no more nausea or mental fogginess...

  13. HI Everyone, I'm new here...was sleeved on 9/9/13....had horrible gas the first two days post op but by morning of day three i had no more gas...I never had any pain except during coughing so after gas was gone I needed no further pain med...my food allowance and progression is 1st week-clear liquids, 2nd week full liquids, 3rd week soft/puree, 4th week regular texture no bread, pasta, for 1st 4-6 months.... so Im on full liquids which includes greek yogurt, hot cereal, pudding, milk, protein shakes, etc,,,so far so good for me, I belch way more than I ever did, and I'm finally able to drink and get at least 32 ounces and get all my protein in. taking my supplements is another story, Im having a hard time getting the pills down.. they get stuck while trying to go down and it burns and causes nausea. today was the first day I had no burning and got the pills down while taking continuous sips....I've decided to weigh myself weekly. started pre-op surgery day 237 and upon leaving hospital I was 5lbs down, one week later 10 lbs down. I'll weigh myself again. on 9/23. im excited about my journey though i must admit , I cant wait to have some textured food....please discuss your experiences...Im excited to hear about others

    Struggling

I had my surgery 4 days ago and have been wanting food too. It seems to me it is just the habit of eating as I am not hungry. So far I have found anything really cold in not sitting well. This morning I had decaf coffee with cremora and was fine until 20 m later when I started sipping on a protein shake. Threw it all up. then later for lunch. threw up more protein shake. The rest of the day I have kept down, chicken broth, water with crystal light, sugar free jello and premier protein clear drink with no problem. I think maybe I need to wait another day before I start the the yogurt and pudding. Although I did drink some ensure at the hospital with no problems. I most certainly have to take small sips and I cannot imagine trying to chug anything, I was afraid to drink the cup of barium for the upper gi they did after the hospital. Dont feel bad for yourself. The first day after I was so sorry I did this but that is changing. Ive been keeping myself busy talking to family, watching TV, taking some walks around the house and yard and playing solitaire. One day at a time.
  15. I'm now 8 days post op. Still have pain by two of my incisions but been walking over a mile each day. Today was crazy! Was up early to take my youngest to a 7 am dental appointment and walked while he was getting his teeth cleaned. Did some other errands and at 1 sat in the recliner by the fireplace and woke up at MIDNIGHT!!! Holy cow! Obviously I needed it but now 3 am and wide awake! Finding hot tea is my best friend. Tummy does NOT like cold things! Have yet to throw up, dump etc. no issues getting liquids in either but adding all the food ( that's a laugh!! 4 oz 3x a day?!?!) is more of a pain because I'm more interested in getting the Protein in. FYI- Dannon Greek yogurt has a banana cream and a toasted coconut that are unbelievably awesome!!!!! Have a great day all!!!

    Stall

I have trouble getting all my liquids and protein in. I HATE the shakes. Guess I have to go back to them tho. Most of my protein comes thru poultry and greek yogurt
  17. I have been sick 3 or 4 times in 5 weeks. I am not eating anything bad, I have mashed vegies one of the days. I think that I ate them to fast, thats all I can put it down to. 5 weeks out and I am doing two Opti a day and frozen yogurt ice block for dinner. My Doc just said to eat slow and watch the amount.
  18. If the change was sudden (overnight), you might mention it to your doc. And if it sounds normal to them, then that is great! Yogurt and liquids are supposed to go down smoothly. The restriction should be felt again when eating solids (presumably 8 weeks out). This is why they want you eating your meals and drinking only zero calorie beverages in maintenance.
  19. Almost everyone needs protein supplements right after weight loss surgery. Protein shakes and powders give you the protein you need when you’re not allowed to eat solid foods. But which types should you choose? And should you keep using them when you’re eating solid foods and surgery is long behind you? Protein for the Liquid Phase of the Post Weight Loss Surgery Diet Progression After a day or two of sticking to clear liquids, you progress to a full liquid diet. You can be on this diet for a few days, if you’re a lap-band patient, or a couple of weeks, if you have the gastric sleeve or gastric bypass. Protein sources include the following. Non-fat milk, with 90 calories and 8 grams of protein per 8 ounces. Non-fat milk powder, with 100 calories and 10 grams of protein per ounce. Low-sugar protein powder, with 110 calories and 25 grams of protein per ounce. Low-sugar protein shakes, with 100 or more calories and 15 or more grams of protein per 8 ounces. Without supplementing your diet with protein shakes and powders, you’re not going to be able to hit your 60 to 80 grams of protein. Protein Powders and Shakes in the Pureed Foods Phase This phase is really a transition phase. You’re adding foods back into your diet, but aren’t yet ready to eat chewy, sticky, crunchy, or other solid foods. Protein foods include the following. Non-fat cottage cheese, with 12 grams of protein per half-cup. Non-fat ricotta cheese, with 5 grams of protein per half-cup. Egg whites, with 4 grams of protein per extra-large white. Non-fat Greek or regular yogurt, with 8 to 14 grams of protein per container. During this phase, your surgeon will probably have you start to decrease your use of protein shakes and powders, but will probably recommend keeping them in your diet to help you get to 60 to 80 grams of protein per day. You might need one or two shakes a day, plus powder in foods such as oatmeal, yogurt, or pureed potatoes. Be Wary of Protein Supplements in the Long-Term Protein shakes and powders can be convenient, but they’re not your best bet for long-term weight loss. As you progress from pureed foods to semi-solid and then solid foods, your surgeon will probably recommend that you stop drinking shakes and focus instead on solid sources of protein. They’re more substantial and satisfying than liquid shakes. They take longer to eat than drinking shakes. They’re easier to fit into a real-life eating plan. You won’t be “drinking your calories.” They have more natural nutrients than processed shakes and powders. Most weight loss surgery patients can get enough protein just by choosing one or two high-protein foods for each meal. You’ll get 60 to 80 grams with the following foods. Breakfast: 2 scrambled egg whites with ½ light English muffin and some fruit. Lunch: ½ cup fat-free cottage cheese and a green salad with 3 ounces of canned light tuna. Dinner: 3 ounces of chicken breast and steamed spinach. Snack 1: 1 low-fat cheese stick. Snack 2: 1 6-ounce container of plain low-fat yogurt and ½ cup carrot sticks. When Protein Supplements Are Okay Still, some weight loss surgery patients may still need protein shakes and powders in the long term. That’s often the case for vertical sleeve patients if your sleeve fills up too quickly to allow you to eat enough solid protein throughout the day. Talk to your surgeon to find out whether you should still use shakes and powders. Your surgeon might suggest that you include one or two protein shakes a day as snacks or mix protein powder into your yogurt, cereal or other foods. Protein supplements can still come in handy even if you’re able to meet your protein requirements on your daily weight loss surgery diet. If your routine gets interrupted, you might come up short. Consider the protein you can miss if you need to change your regular plans for a meal or snack. 10 grams of protein if you run out the door without grabbing your yogurt in the morning. 22 grams of protein if you forget to pack your tuna for lunch. 26 grams of protein if you’re stuck in a meeting instead of cooking your chicken dinner at home. When you’re stuck in the car or too busy to plan ahead, protein shakes can be lifesavers. On vacation, you can take protein powder with you so you’re always sure to have a source when you need it. You could also try Unjury Protein’d Cheese Sauce on steamed vegetables for an extra 21 grams of protein. Read the Nutrition Facts Panel to Find Protein Content The Food and Drug Administration lets food manufacturers call a food “a good source of” protein if it has at least 5 grams of protein. If a serving has at least 10 grams of protein, a food can be labeled “high,” “rich in,” or “an excellent source of” protein. That doesn’t do you much good if you’re trying to find a shake or powder with at least 15 to 20 grams of protein per serving. Don’t rely on a claim on the front of the label when you’re looking for a protein supplement. You could end up with a “high-protein” shake with only 10 grams of protein! Instead, check the nutrition facts panel to see how many grams of protein the food or shake has per serving. Check the Label for Calories and Sugar Protein shakes and powders can be high in calories and sugar. A bottle of Special K Protein has only 10 grams of protein, but 190 calories and 18 grams of sugar. A Pure Protein Frosty Chocolate Shake has 15 grams of protein, but 190 calories and 25 grams of sugar. A can of Boost High Protein drink has 15 grams of protein, 240 calories and 27 grams of sugars. No matter which stage of your weight loss surgery diet you’re on, you can’t afford to eat too many calories or too much sugar. The only way to protect yourself is to read the labels. Protein supplements can be great choices for boosting your intake to 60 to 80 grams a day. Shakes and powders can get you through the liquid and pureed foods stages of the post-surgery diet progression, and they can have a place in your diet even when you reach your long-term weight loss surgery diet plan. Just make sure not to overuse them if your surgeon is concerned, and to choose low-sugar options.

    what did you eat?

I just had an apple and rhubarb yogurt - full fat, I hate low fat yogurt, so I dont eat tons of yogurt, as the saturated fat is not that great. That was breakfast. I was planning on a sandwich for lunch - probably ham and salad dinner tonight is a barbecue, got some nice lamb loin chops which we'll have with salad. Might have a small glass of wine with dinner. I try not to eat between meals at all. I do better on a 3 meal per day, no Snacks kind of routine, once I start eating at 4pm I cant stop kind of thing, so I just dont start. Thats an average day for me. I dont diet, I dont count calories at all and I most definitely dont do low carb. I just eat what I ate before in smaller portions minus all the snacks and crap in between. And whilst I dont do low carb, we have far far fewer Pasta dinners and much more plain meat and 3 veg type dinners now.
  21. breakfast - peach chobani yogurt lunch - few slices of sweet deli ham, a few baby carrots and a wedge of laughing cow garlic and herb light cheese dinner - cous cous sauteed with garlic, spinach and feta and a piece of baked pork snack - strawberry popsicle
  22. Good idea for Today my meal plan is: Breakfast-Chobani greek peach yogurt Lunch-baked flounder with asparagus Snack-Wheat thin fiber blend crackers with a Laughing Cow cheese wedge, and half an orange. Dinner-3oz filet mignon with red white and blue potatoes, with broccolini. Yum!

    What are your portion sizes?

Tomorrow is 5 weeks and I can only eat 1 scrambled egg or table spoon of cottage cheese, or a table spoon of greek yogurt. I have no appetite or hunger pains so I just figure as long as I continue to drink my water and keep up my meal replacements and protein requirements rather not eat. as of May 9 had lost 40 pounds. haven't weighed myself again yet but I can tell how my shoes are starting to slide around that I have lost some more. everytime I try to eat something I regurgitate it. The way I am able to get my meal replacements in now is because I have a g-tube and will have one for 3 more weeks per my doctor. At first I was sad about having the g-tube but since i am also tired of the smell of the meal replacements. the only advantage i have is I can put meal replacements mixed with water only and crushed meds through my g-tube. Since I am meeting my protein and vitamin goals no need to eat. Think I am going to hate when my doctor says time to take tube out. hope by then I can deal with mixing the meal replacements with fruit to take the smell away.
