Protein and Carbs...Help!
DesertGirl replied to DesertGirl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks! Ok, no oatmeal. Got it. I'll add the protein powder to my pudding. I don't know why I keep forgetting the powder. I had tuna today. I usually don't eat tuna, but I really enjoyed it. I added cottage cheese and Greek yogurt instead of mayo. Kids approved, too. -
Stuck in a hotel for 5 nights, what would you bring for meals?
Losebig replied to YandereAngel's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Here are some of the items I've had in similar situations: Cottage cheese (you can get small containers), greek yogurt, string cheese, beef jerky, cold meats like ground turkey, deli meat, chicken, etc, soups (put can in sink with hot water before opening it to heat it a little). Not a ton of variety, but maybe eough to get through. For extra storage you could bring a cooler an keep it full of Ice from the ice Machine. -
Bathroom problems since December sleeve

Don’t forget the gut bugs and feeding them. Make sure you are taking probiotics (some commercial ones are worthless so vary which ones you take) and eating some resistant starch to feed them. They are an important part of digestion and doctors forget to mention them. One soil based probiotic that saved me once when I had chronic d, is called Prescript Assist. Amazon has it. I take it daily since surgery too, just to make sure, because I can’t eat as much. If you can’t take pills, there are kids probiotics in powder form. And you can eat raw fermented veggies (find at Whole Foods etc). Of course there is yogurt, always good to eat high protein plain full fat Greek style. Resistant starch is found in lots of foods, but since we can’t eat much, best to choose one of the root veggies that has a high population. Potatoes both white and sweet. Highest resistant starch is after they’ve been cooked and cooled. Like potato salad. Or bake a bunch of potatoes and keep them in the fridge, add a part of one to each meal (feel free to warm it up for your meal, that doesn’t ale away the resistant starch content to be reheated). If you are too close out from surgery, there is another way. Use a powdered resistant starch like potato starch or inulin (NOT INSULIN, inulin comes from artichokes and tastes a bit sweet). Put a teaspoon in your smoothie or protein drink. Work up to a tablespoon. Our gut bacteria population takes so much care of us - from our immune system to our moods to our digestion. It is a shame not to take care of them even if we’ve had WLS. They are still in there and we do need to keep the good ones happy. If you can even get 1 tablespoon of cheap and tasteless potato starch into one of your protein drinks today, tomorrow you will feel much better on the potty. -

I was really itchy after surgery too. And my skin was really dry and peeling when it finally came off. As for the diet upgrade, just take it slow. Your body will tell you what you can handle. I was nervous at first too. Start off with simple things like Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, thinned refried beans, and thinned oatmeal. -
Medical and phase 2 food options
Nikki_Nik87 replied to BIGRO361's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I never thought about getting a medical bracelet, but good idea. The first things I tried was greek yogurt, cottage cheese, and refried beans. Then introduced canned tuna and chicken, ground meats and thin sliced deli meat. I can also have soft cooked veggies. Recipes I have been using recently is riccotta bake, turkey taco bowl, hamburger casserole (all without any type of bread, rice or noodles). Pinterest is my go-to site for bariatric meal ideas. -

They have a great low carb yogurt called Carb Master. I love it. Try tuna or chicken salad for dinner instead of oatmeal. -
Let's Play Another Round of "How Much Am I Eating Now?"
xoxococojay replied to FluffyChix's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Not quite a year and a half out. I was sleeved and i only do 3 meals per day ( maybe one snack if i've been working out like crazy) and each meal is only 3-4 oz. only because snacking is what made me fat in the first place. Very very low carb, still. Typical breakfast is kind of boring just because i never used to eat breakfast ever. So i stick to only a few options and rotate, plus i'm lazy. - breakfast parfait (0% fat greek yogurt, added 1 scoop of gnc vanilla whey, top with berries of my choice. - green smoothie -whey protein with caramel flavored coffee - protein shake -crustless quiche - eggs and avocados or eggs and 1 piece of bacon Lunches and dinners i meal prep and because i cook everything that's where i tend to get more creative. I'll make whatever as long as it's low carb. Pinterest has tons of great ideas. I meal prep ahead of time to save me time. Snacks: (if ever) - parmesean crips - protein chips -sugar free jello pudding - smoked almonds or sweet thai chili and dried cranberries -jerky or duke's smoked shorty sasuages - deli meat and cheese - spicy pork rinds - halo top ice cream - greek yogurt - hummus - guacamole -cranberry almond chicken salad (costco) Even though i can eyeball stuff- i still measure and pre portion. I don't ever want to get in the habit of eating slider foods or over eating when im not actually hungry. -
Protein and Carbs...Help!
MIZ60 replied to DesertGirl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I use baked chicken breast pureed with a little bone broth and greek yogurt and that is 9 grams per ounce. I eat 3-4 ounces throughout the day. Cottage cheese is 3 grams protein per ounce and I eat 2 ounces per day. 1 PP shake with my AM coffee is 30 g protein. That is a total of 63-72 grams of protein. 2 grams carb for the cottage cheese, less than 1 total for the chicken, 3 for the shake. I also eat some garlic mashed cauliflower about 3 ounces per day (I carb) I do add some Land of Lakes light butter to the cauliflower and about 1/2 teaspoon Duke's mayo per serving of the chicken. I honestly am not worried about a moderate amount of fat and will not be using any fat free stuff....just nasty. My program does not allow any eggs, oatmeal, pudding, milk or soup at this stage. Liquid stuff just runs through the pouch and does not lead to satiety.....so they say. My surgeon is against eggs and I do not know why. I can have fruit but I see no reason since I am satisfied. My next things to try are tuna and black beans. count -
Any newbies struggling to get all their protein in?
xoxococojay replied to xoxococojay's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
One thing i tried that i love are breakfast parfait's. I use fage 0% fat plain greek (taste awful by itself, it's very tart) and i add a scoop of gnc vanilla protein to it. And top it with my favorite berries. (If you want to add rolled oats on top for a granola like effect knock yourself out) -instant 45g of protein right there. -premier caramel a scoop of any flavor protein powder and caramel flavored coffee - instant 50g of protein - i've added genepro to sauces, dressings etc I've done fruit flavored greek yogurt mixed with any ready to drink protein and blended it with berries and ice for about 50g of protein. -loco moco over cauliflower rice (pinterest) using 93% lean ground beef, 1 egg and a few tbs of egg whites. (Almost 50g of protein) I'll add as i think of other things i've done recently. -

There’s debate on whether your carbs must be that low, what does your doctors plan say? I kept mine that low during my loss phase. Simple tweak is to get rid of the oatmeal. I didn’t add that back in till I was at goal. Check the carbs in your shakes, some are higher than others. I chose one with no carbs. Also check your soup, some have higher carbs than others. Does your Greek yogurt have added sugar? There’s another spot you could lower the carbs. -
So I love to cook and my husband and I throw a get together every month with some friends. I love how supportive my husband is of my surgery. I always cook up some amazing food every time however as a twist I decided to use Pinterest to find healthy options. I want also had my friends cook up some healthy protein food to bring as their contributing food to the potluck. It became a game with everyone trying to make the most delicious healthy recipe. My best friend made a gluten free pasta made of chick peas and my other friend made lettuce wrap turkey greek yogurt tacos. Aside from the fried cream cheese wontons (for my pregnant sister) upon her pleading I made all of the attached healthy dishes. I couldn't eat them as I am on puree foods still, however I also didn't have any cravings and just enjoyed watching everyone enjoy themselves. Everyone is now talking and being competitive to find out what healthy dish they will contribute next month. I just find this a great way to include friends and family and their support is seriously one of the best feelings. Hopefully in the future I can help them want to include a healthy lifestyle by inspiring them to come up with new healthy delicious recipes. 1- A picture of all the food my husband and I made. 2- Dill pickle, ham, cheese. 3- Cherry, pineapple, ham. 4- Bread free. turkey bacon, turkey beef, cheeseburger bites. 5- cucumber, ham, cheese.

I am now on day 7 of the liquid diet and the lbs. are definitely coming off. I am losing about a lb. a day right now. It is exciting to see such rapid results from this crazy diet. My body seems to be adjusting to the fact that I can only eat these 5 different items (3 Specific protein drinks, 1 light yogurt, 4c. romaine/2Tbsp. light dressing, 2 1/2 c. SF Jellos, and 2 c. unsalted broth). I am doing the 3 shakes as meals and randomly doing the rest throughout the day to spice things up. It is getting better, but next Tuesday still feels like it is a long way away right now!

Ugh! Here I am again! Why did I think this would be different?!? The minute your try to restrict my food I figure out how to take it to the edge as far as I can. Sleeve 4/26/18 Hw:215 Sw:215 Cw: 192 Gw: 145 Yesterday I ate a 1000 calories in the form of small things of cottage cheese and yogurt. Everything tasted so good. Last week i binged on 8 saltines. This feels like I’m on a diet. And that’s the one thing I immediately rebel against. Does anyone else have this going on?

So, I'm transitioning in between phase of full liquids and pureed foods. I'm trying to figure out how to get all my protein in while staying below 50 carbs. According to my Baritastic app, I'm eating about 60 carbs per day. Now, I'm under the assumption that I'm supposed to be eating 50 or less per day. I've been trying to ask my NUT, but she's super busy and doesn't seem to reply. My breakfast is usually a 1/4 cup greek yogurt. Lunch is a shake or soup with protein powder. Dinner is either oatmeal, soup, or cottage cheese. I've been drinking shakes every day for 5 weeks. I'm so tired of them. I need to find a better source of protein that has minimal carbs and fat. My protein goal is 70-90. Carb goal is less than 50. Fat goal is unknown, but I know that it shouldn't be much.

I am doing pretty good. Instead of my can of meat/vegetable soup, I've been eating a chicken broccoli alfredo (no noodles) healthy choice meal with similar nutrition value which really has helped. I actually made it through a shopping trip yesterday by bringing yogurt, sugar free pudding and a protein shake with me. I did cheat a little with a couple of samples at Costco but it wasn't much. How is everyone else doing? Only 8 days left!

I am right where you are in that I had surgery the same day and am currently on pureed food. The only things I would ask is are you (sorry) pooping well since backed up poop can cause weight gain and are you drinking plenty of water. You will retain fluids if you are not drinking enough. On the pureed front, I am only doing chicken, cottage cheese, cauliflower and greek yogurt so far so basically only a few carbs. Not adding fruits or any other carbs for a while. Hang in there!!

I noticed I started losing weight when I started eating breakfast at breakfast time. Around 930am I'll have a Greek yogurt then my coffee. Even if I'm out hungry, which I never am that early, I force it. I snack only on fruit and veggies and she told me I need carbs and to not cut them out. She said all of this will change after surgery.. But I lost 10 pounds in three weeks by eating breakfast in the morning.

Not eating soft foods yet! Exhausted and can’t get all protein in
Kay07 replied to amartinez8853's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Agreed, not trolling. My plan is Clear Liquids for 24, full liquid ( including Greek yogurt, jello) for 10 days, then soft food “chewed to the consistency of applesauce” for 2-3 weeks following that. I was approved by my nut to start adding in soft foods slowly, such as scrambled eggs or oatmeal at this weekend (surg was Monday) because I have 0 difficulty getting fluids and Protein. The day after my surgery I had 70oz Fluid and 55g protein, and the second even more. I am averaging 60-80g of protein per day, and 80-90oz of Water. I tried cream of wheat this am, and was able to handle it just fine, just took longer to eat it. Every practice is different. Doesn’t mean we are trolling or sabotaging ourselves. -
Not eating soft foods yet! Exhausted and can’t get all protein in
Nikki_Nik87 replied to amartinez8853's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Totally not a troll... In fact, why would someone lie about what something like that?? The day I left the hospital I was on Full Liquids (clear only in hosp.) Day 8 I went to soft foods. I just started off with the softest things like yogurt, cottage cheese, etc. Then worked my way up to ground meats. I have not once had a bad reaction to anything. I totally agree with @sillykitty, everyone's healing process is different. What works for me may not work for you. Doesn't mean our surgeons don't know what they're doing. My surgeon has a very high success rate so I doubt he'd tell me to do anything that would negatively effect me. -
Not eating soft foods yet! Exhausted and can’t get all protein in
Sammy 10-30 replied to amartinez8853's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I was given this, I just do not believe surgeons are approving solid foods only 6 days after surgery and I strongly believe that this is another internet troll that has infiltrated this forum or another patient in denial making their own dietary plan up after surgery. Stage 1: Clear Liquids Days 1-3 Post-Op - You can start this diet on DAY 1 in the hospital. - Clear liquids only. - On DAY 3 you may start adding protein drinks back into your diet - AT LEAST 75 grams of protein daily Stage 2: Full Liquids Days 4-14 Post-Op - All liquids must be pourable from a cup, NO CHUNKS - 1-2 ounces of water to be sipped every 15 minutes while awake - It is important to consume at least 64 ounces of fluid daily while awake. - Examples of acceptable foods/liquids: o Cream of wheat (thinned), cream of rice (thinned), mashed potatoes (thinned). Must be thinned with fat free milk or broth o Lactose-free milk, skim milk, sugar-free and low-fat yogurt (NO fruits or seeds) o LOW sodium vegetable juices o Unsweetened applesauce (thinned with water) o Unflavored protein powder, flavored low-carb/high-protein shakes o Blended creamy soups, broths, bouillon o Sugar-free gelatin (liquid state only) o Sugar-free pudding (thinned) o Sugar-free custard (thinned) o Sugar-free popsicles - Besides what is listed above, nothing else is allowed. - Start your chewable multivitamin on DAY 7 after surgery. Stage 3: Pureed Foods Day 14-35 - You may now have pureed foods. - During this stage you will learn your new style of eating. - Listen to your pouch, it will guide you on portion sizes. - Stop eating when you feel a slight pressure in your chest area. - Pureed foods should be the consistency of baby food. - Add foods slowly, one at a time, to test your tolerance of each food. - You may add protein powder to pureed foods to add more protein. • Foods allowed on this stage include all full liquids from previous liquid stage, plus: o Cream of wheat, cream of rice o Thinned oatmeal and grits o Mashed potatoes, skinless sweet potatoes (slightly thinned) o Lactose free milk, skim milk o Sugar-free & low-fat yogurt (no fruits or seeds) o Low-fat cottage cheese (pureed) o Low-fat ricotta cheese o Soft-cooked pureed vegetables, Stage 1 baby food (no more than ½ cup/day) o Unsweetened apple sauce, unsweetened or lite canned fruit without seeds (pureed), Stage 1 baby food o Pureed chicken, turkey, or fish (Stage 1 baby meats) o Fat-free refried beans (thinned) o Hummus o Protein powder and drinks o Blended creamy soups, broths, bouillon soups o Sugar-free gelatin o Sugar-free pudding, sugar-free custard o Sugar-free popsicles o Herbs and mild spices • From here on out make sure to chew each bite 20-30 times and avoid liquids 10 minutes before, during, and 30 minutes after meals and snacks. Stage 4 Day 35-999 As you transition to solid foods, this is still a time of learning. You will start this phase on DAY 35. Let your pouch be your guide on portion sizes. 1) Take small bites. 2) Chew each bite to applesauce consistency. 3) Pause 30 seconds between each swallowed bite. Remember, overeating can lead to nausea, vomiting, and stretching of your pouch. • This stages includes foods listed in previous stages, plus: o Lean ground beef, chicken, or turkey (90% lean) o Fish, egg whites, or egg substitute (Egg Beaters) o Vegetable patties o Lean canned chicken or tuna (in water) o Low fat deli meat, shaved o Creamy peanut butter o Low-fat or fat-free cottage cheese and ricotta cheese o 2% or fat free string cheese or cheese slices o Canned fruit (fruit cocktail—no grapes or cherries) in its own juice, lite, or no sugar added o Bananas (remove strings) o Soft cooked or canned vegetables and vegetable juice o Toasted breads or crackers o Low-fat yogurt (without seeds and whole fruit) o Butter Buds, Fat-free butter spray, low-fat or lite mayo, olive oil, safflower oil o Herbs and mild spices (most herbs, spices, and low calorie condiments are okay) • Remember 1 oz of meat provides 7 grams of protein • Make sure to choose a protein food FIRST and a fruit or vegetable SECOND. You may also select a starch/grain LAST if you still have room. -
Bariatric haul! What have you bought for your journey or plan to buy?
magpie26 replied to Yo-yo girl's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
make batches and batchs of bone bone broth weekly, chicken and beef! For the best flavor for beef you should roast your marrow bones first, the cook the onions a little, tomato paste will bring richness as well as some soy sauce and other veggie. More steps but worth it. I use an instapot, takes 2 hours! If anyone invests in anything I would recommend an awesome blender and an instapot! I've used mine probably 5 times a week and make everything in it, so convenient when your family won't cook after surgery, they did figure out the instapot though! Beef bone broth has up to 10 grams of protein! And for me, personally. I found that I probably used MAYBE 75% or less post op. The shakes I had suddenly I couldn't stomach, protein20 water= disgusting to me, sugar free stuff in general bothered me but I can usually eat it depending what it is. You'd think blended chicken (pre-op) sounds disgusting but if you're like me and was on liquids for a full month, it was pure heaven! I added fat free gravy (homemade) omg seriously, I got to chew! The only thing in that bariatric measuring tool from Amazon are the scoops, the rings may be ok later, but I felt dumb because i have a scale and measuring cups and spoons. My best investments I made were: my $10 scale, baby spoon/forks, big water bottle and 4 oz tiny TupperwAre $1.89/each , my Cabot whey powder $14, (I put that in smoothies or in my yogurt) oh and the surgery! My instapot and blender and immersion blender i already had. HW: 303 SW:283 CW: 259 Loss: 44 GOAL 1: 175 GOAL 2: 160 -
Liquid post-op diet sucks
XYZXYZXYZ1955 replied to Kay07's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The first month after surgery just sucks, except for all the weight loss. That part is good. But trust me . . . it does get better. Slowly. If you are going to have something a bit past your current liquid phase, make sure it's soft, like eggs or cottage cheese or yogurt. I would definitely not advise a protein bar or anything similarly solid, no matter how you break it up or chew it. -

I had my sleeve the same day. My surgeon explained to me that 6 weeks post surgery you are at risk of rupturing that new pouch. Do what they tell you. Try Oikos tripple zero yogurt. its got 15 grams of protein and i was allowed to sub that in for a shake. -
Stuck on liquids 5 weeks out!
Orchids&Dragons replied to Krizivester's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Sorry to hear you're struggling. Are you doing any protein supplements, aka Protein shakes/protein water/protein powder? You shouldn't give up on those until you are getting sufficient protein from other sources. Can you handle Greek yogurt? It's a good source of protein. How about eggs? Also, since you can handle milk, are you using Fairlife milk? It has more protein than regular. Everyone progresses at their own pace. Lots of people aren't even cleared for solids until 6-8 weeks post-op. Also, don't eat anything solid within 3 hours of bedtime or you increase your chances of reflux and nausea. Hope this helps!
