Digestive issues post-op
socalgal3 replied to kjeter's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You are only two and a half weeks post-op, so your body is still recovering. It will take time to adjust to your new way of eating. You can try Maalox or something, but natural fiber will eventually regulate your system. It shouldn't cause diarrhea. Are you supposed to be on solid foods already? Sometimes in the early stages, we are eating liquids and mushies, so that's what comes out! Sorry! TMI! Hang in there. It should get better. If not, talk to your doc. -
Everything Happens for a Reason
Jim1967 replied to winkie80's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I wear a cpap nightly and my wife is very happy about it. I used to stop breathing in the middle of the night and it would scare the hell out of her and she would wake me up. Some nights I would suddenly stop snoring and she had to check to make sure my chest was going up and down. Just remember the cpap is for sleeping, not relations although I did ask my wife once if she wanted to have a 'go round with the elephant man'...probably a little TMI there...LOL sleep apnea can kill you and it is no joke. Look on the bright side...you are married. Think how much it would suck if you were single. -
Just to the right of my port (which is just above my belly button), about 3 inches toward my right hip I noticed swelling today. The entire tummy area has been a little swollen since surgery (9 days ago) but it looks like the rest of my stomach is almost back to normal except this one area. It's about the size of a decent sized fist. When I showered this evening I noticed it felt kind of hard too. I have a doc visit tomorrow but I know I'm going to spend the rest of the night wondering if a surgical towel was left in me, or if my port tubing got undone somehow and tangled itself around something, or God knows what my pea brain may think up next. Everything is working normally from food intake to bowels (though come to think of it I only had a little bowel movement this morning and nothing since). TMI!!! Other than that I'm feeling pretty good.

There is some nastyness going around here and I'm wondering. (and yes I do have a call into my team to see what they say) I know we are supposed to avoid vomiting. I know the damage it can cause. What do you do if you get this stomach bug. I was very nauseas last night. I heaved a couple of times (sorry... TMI I know) but never actually vomited. I had a saltine cracker to try to settle my stomach and it helped a little. Today I am very sore but not in pain. I hope I didn't cause any damage. Any suggestions from others' docs. Had I been severely ill I would have gone to emergency to stop the vomiting, but after a couple false starts I went to bed and today I feel better. I just want to be prepared in the future and know when to really start worrying. What have you all been told? Steph

So I'm 6 weeks preg. And for the past two days I have been very weak and faint. I have hydrated myself, took vitamins, and ate protein rich food but no improvement. To top it off TMI alert....I have been spotting brown and red and I have had some thick substance come out that I've never seen before. The spotting has been going on for over a week.

keep getting colds since banded (for women)
CanadianBandster posted a topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
So - I "was" one of those people who hardly ever got sick - maybe once every two or three years and just a little cold (with exception of flu twice in my life). Since being banded in Dec though....I just started my THIRD cold, plus I have had an ear infection and (warning TMI) TWO yeast infections (which I have never had even one before). WHAT THE HELL. I said to my husband last night - hm, do I want to be fat and never sick or skinny and have colds all the time....grrrrrr what could I be lacking?? Im taking a Multivitamin and Vitamin C and Calcium. Can I go to the doctor and ask her to test me to see if Im deficiant in something or do they do that? Its starting to get on my nerves and Im tired of making my husband and kids sick. PLUS - Im having a PS consult soon and I have to get this figured out or their is no way I can get plastic surgery in May (maybe) if I cant fight off infection. -
My symptoms were different. The pain was up higher and to the right side, going around to my back. Pretty much under the ribcage to the shoulder blade. I didn't have any probems with constipation. I didn't feel nauseated, just an ache to sharp pain that wouldn't go away no matter how I sat or layed down or whatever. I'd go in, or at least call. Being constipated can be an issue of it's own. I speak from experience, having gotten so bad I thought it was my appendix and ending up in the ER with an enama(yeah, probably TMI!).

HEY, SORRY TO BE POSTING THIS ON HERE but anyways, i graduate from highschool tomorrow!! i was the first student that i know of who has had the band done at 18 while in highschool. i may have missed many days due to being sick the first few months of having it done but everyone has told me that i made a complete turn around. its true! my final grades are 87-96 and i made high honor roll 3 quarters in a row (1st quarter made nothing) now more about the band, i got my insurance card today!!! very exciting (: but i have news for some of those who commented my thread about gallstones i believe...i'm having surgery to get it removed, i was going to have my surgery done on july 5th but they surgeon on the hospital near me told me to call my lapband surgeon to see if he should do it and obviously they said he should do it do the surgery is cancelled and i have a consultation with my surgeon on july 7th. i just hope that this (gallblader) is what has been causing me discomfort and pain....nausea!so i say BRING IT ON!! i hope i feel 100% better after andd after i get that out, i'll be getting my first fill!!!!! finally after a year getting banded! omg! and i'll also be seeing a therapist most likely because my "depression" or whatever i have is still with me and i cant stand it, yup  and i have a question..woman answer only please, my boobs have been (mainly the nipple part TMI!!!)hurting a little over two weeks, no monthly thing and no having been with guys, does mean i'll be getting my monthly thing soon? i never had that happen before

I would rather NOT eat a thing than to have to live through these horrid runny bowels that this protein shake is giving me...OMG (sorry TMI)!! I think I'm going to get some gateraid and broth because I cannot take another minute of this. What did you drink during your pre-op diet that made it easier? Funny thing is I'm not even hungry I just want to make sure I'm putting something in my stomach.

new from philly! trying to get started in the process
tattooed posted a topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hi everyone, new here to the forum! i have been lurking for awhile and have decided to get started in the process of getting banded. i have been overweight practically my entire life. everyone would always tell me, "well you're tall" or "you're have a bigger build" and i always felt fat. now at 27, i am the most i've ever weighed! i was always an active person, but the weight just kept coming back plus some. now i have three herniated discs and knee problems which make it hard to stay as active as i was once. i have to take meds for my bi-polar disorder for the rest of my life. these meds help but all have weight gain associated with them. my entire immediate family has weight poblems. i feel like this will definitely help me to improve my overal quality of life. i have a 4 year old son who i love and want to be able to keep up with him. ahh and this is tmi, but my weight gain is mostly in the stomach and lower body. i have no chest whatsoever! sucks but it literally all went straight to my butt! i saw my pcp on friday, and he said he would refer me to a doc at the universit of penn. he wanted to check out my blood work so we're doing that on monday to rule out thyroid problems. if all is clear, he'll refer me so i could get started with that part of the process. i'm nervous, i know i need to gain some weight to have at least a bmi of 35 for my insurance company to cover it, but i'm so scared to willfully gain weight and then be denied. i cannot self-pay at this time or anytime soon. thanks for reading, any suggestions or thoughts would be appreciated. good luck to everyone in their journey! -
Anyone have an IVC filter
Lissa replied to Sandy123's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had an IVC filter put in before surgery. Since I was also on Coumadin, I had to give myself Lovenox shots before the filter installation, through surgery date. I had the filter installed on Friday, then surgery on the next Tuesday. I was conscious for the filter installation, which worried me beforehand. My experience was that I went into the outpatient surgical center, had an IV line installed in my arm, went into the surgery room on a gurney. They shaved some hair from the groin area, then moved me to a really uncomfortable bed. I received oxygen during the procedure, along with some Versed and a pain medication. The Versed wasn't enough to make me forget the surgery, but it made me really relaxed about the whole thing. It took maybe 15 minutes to actually install the filter, then I had to lay flat for several hours, maybe 5? I also had my filter removed after my VSG was done. I love LOVE the Versed, because I was really scared going back into the OR. The doc had to use ultrasound guidance to ensure she was in the vein to remove the filter and this time I felt a little pressure. When I mentioned it to the doc, she gave me a bit more pain medication, then removed the filter. I asked to see the filter and it's somewhat acorn shaped, but made of fine filaments of wire that collapse very flat for the installation and removal procedures. Mine did catch two clots, but they didn't show me that part. I did ask if I could have the filter for a souvenier, but that wasn't allowed. My "lay flat" time after the removal was 3 hours. I "think" I felt the filter one night after surgery, but it could have been menstrual cramps instead. TMI, but I hadn't experienced those in about a year, and I did start having monthlies again after surgery. In my imagination, I thought I could tell where the filter was, but the nurse showed me the general location after the removal and it didn't match where I had felt something before. If you are fairly young, you may want to talk to the vein doctor about using a removable filter instead of a permanent one. My doc explained the risks of leaving a filter in long term to me (I'm 45) and I opted for the removable one. If you have more questions, feel free to ask. And, even with having two minor surgical procedures for the filter install/removal, I'd STILL have my VSG all over again. -
Burping is like being stabbed for me, I get this shooting pain down my spine my stomach feels like it's moving sideways and I see stars. Honestly, and this is sooo gross sorry if it's tmi, but Coming out the back end feels soooooooooooooooooo much better then burping, at least you feel relief and not like your torso is going to explode.

No worries Lena, this may be TMI but it took me 11 DAYS! Pain meds can really slow down your system. When I called in about it they said as long as I was able to pass gas I was okay. Also, I had a LOT of glue going on and I was very gentle in the shower so I bet it took a month for everything to fully come off without me picking. Good luck and be sure to get enough liquids in--don't be like me and get dehydrated!

Hi all. I've been posting in the May 2007 Bandsters thread and just now noticed this forum. I will be banded on the 14th! WOOT! Below is what I blogged for friends a few weeks ago. I think it will serve as introduction, but it's a bit long. Bear with me. BTW, the names are fake. I was born (yes, this may be a long entry! lol) one of a pair of twins. My twin sister, Jennifer, came out fat and sassy but I was just 4 lbs. 1 oz. and in 1954 that was very small indeed. What they now call intensive care nursery was then called the incubator. These days it costs about $2000 a day, but back then it was $5. I have the bill from the hospital Mother saved. They didn't let me go home until I was 3 weeks old. Anyway, I remained painfully thin for all my childhood and even had special Dr. visits just to consult about my weight. Now, mind that we were Christian Scientists and Dr. visits were few and far between. It was that bad, but I think a lot of it was just the stark contrast between myself and Jennifer, who remained slightly on the chubby side, and strangers continually questioning why Mother didn't feed "that one"? The truth was, I was perfectly healthy, rarely sick and I just didn't eat what at the time was "normal" food. I didn't like cooked veggies or meat of any kind and was always munching on a carrot or a banana. My favorite food was just plain cottage cheese or Peanut Butter on a spoon! chocolate milk was another favorite, but they cut me off from that when the Dr. said maybe I was filling up on that and it might be why I wouldn't eat my dinner. *rolls eyes* Fast forward (you're welcome! lol) to when I got my driver's license and stopped walking everywhere. I gained a few (needed) pounds, but to me I hated the little paunch of a stomach I could now see when I sat down in a crop top. That's when I first started thinking I was FAT. The dieting started and really all I had to do was stop eating (easy for me at the time) and I'd lose a few pounds, but soon gain it back and a couple more. This went on and on until I got pregnant at 22 and I actually DID get fat. I gained 45 pounds. My stupid Dr., now that I actually needed some help, always just said, "Well, you're a big girl". I do have a larger frame and am 5' 10" (5' 9" now) but I surely didn't need to gain that much! One word from him that it was unhealthy for the baby or myself and I'd have been all over it! Fast forward again through many, many diets, losses, gains and here I sit today at 310 lbs. The good news (yes! there is GOOD NEWS!!!) is that my dear, dear older sister, Sophie, saw an ad for a seminar on bariatric surgery (I had mentioned to her 18 mos. ago that I was considering it) and she went with me to it a week ago yesterday. Some of you may have heard of a somewhat new (in this country) procedure called the "Lap Band". It's a less invasive surgery that is totally reversible. I liked the Dr. and I am GOING FOR IT! Unfortunately, the surgery is excluded on my insurance, but it may just save my life. A bargain at any price. Tomorrow morning I go for the mandatory visit to a psychologist, then later a seminar on nutrition (I'll be totally surprised if they tell me something I don't already know) and my initial visit with Dr. Gilbert is on April 5th. EDIT: I almost forgot...the odd twist to this story is that Jennifer is now painfully thin and may have an eating disorder. Everyone says she looks older than me. She can't possibly go a day without running 5 miles and dinner for her is like a small salad and 4 boiled shrimp. Go figure. Okay, thanks for listening and I'm happy to have found this wonderful web site!

Last night we had a Christmas party, of course there was drinking involved. I regret having to many but what I figured out is you can't throw up. I even tried making myself and (tmi) but just liquid ran out not even dry heave or anything. I don't feel like I messed my band up but is that normal to not be able to throw up? What if you get the flu or something gets stuck? PLEASE NO NASTY COMMENTS. I know I shouldn't be drinking like that. Lesson learned LapBand ~ November 1, 2016

thanks guys - I am thinking about going to a dietition/nutritionist about all this - it's starting to affect my day to day life - what with the flatulence and running to the loo (More TMI for you The Best Me!) - it does seem that the band messes a little with the digestive system. I have been almost stationary :embarassed: for the last six/seven months Vera, so p'raps I need to haul my ass away from the TV Thanks for missing me by the way - I forget how warm and friendly this place is! I still have my college place to do psychology and will start in september (yikes) I feel much less depressed and anxious, and even held a family party at the weekend - I hadn't seen my sisters in SEVEN :omg: months, and it all went ok - I didn't freak out and hide in the wardrobe or anything! Now weigh 242 which is a lot more than my sig below indicates, but that was a low moment anyway! My lower stomach is KILLING me today, really burning and painful - am going to stay away from dairy and fats for a few days (read this on the internet) - maybe I have a bout of gastritis? But ultimately my digestive system is a lot more sensitive that pre-banding - am begining to think that the Big Mac sauce and 7 cans of diet coke a day was doing me some good back then!!! :rolleyes

Post Op Nausea And Vomiting
LesKra replied to smartypants's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I woke up to vomiting in a bag ( sorry TMI ) right after surgery. I was nauseous and threw up a couple of times ( more like dry-heaved more than anything ) for the first day/night or so. It really wasnt that bad. I have been fine ever since. They sent me home with pills to prevent it but I didn't need them! -
Banded 8/15 - Diarrhea and bad cramps- help
AmyF posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I know that liquid in=liquid out but the cramps are fierce. It's 4:30am and I have been up for an hour with bad cramps and diarrhea...sorry TMI! I have taken Pepto but I am really uncomfortable. Should I take Immodium? I haven't been perfect on the liquid diet, some ice cream in the Protein shakes and gazpacho Soup (bad, bad idea) but I was pretty good today so I don't get it. Will it get better once I'm on mushies? A cracker and ginger ale would be good right now. Feelin' yucky, at least the Red Sox won two games today! Amy -
Hey, I got banded three days ago. So.....I know this is TMI, but since yesterday I'm having diarrhea. It's not crampy or painful, it's just all.....liquid. This is rough because yanno I'm doing my best to keep up with liquids and it seems I'm losing them just as fast. My sister says she thinks my body is having trouble with all the meds I'm on (I am SUPER sensitive to medication of all kinds). I think it may be because I'm only on liquids so it's not making things solid down there. Anyone else have this "side effect" after being banded? And how long did it take to go away? I'm not worried yet but may put in a call to my doctor tomorrow.

This is a tmi question. Help!! I now have projectile diahhrea. What do I take?

Hello newly banded 2/13.. Did great in the hospital, but my first full day home was very challenging. I felt no restriction but had a hard time drinking liquids. Had no pains with the lower incision, but the top and side one i had mild pain. but the pain im in now is all due to the gas, been taking my meds, walking, drinking more fluids. Oh i also have really bad dry mouth and i know TMI- diarrhea. Trying a heating pad now. Oh never have i wanted to burp/fart so much in my life lol!!!

I was diagnosed w/ a band slip in October of 2011, and I'm scheduled for a revision on March 27th. Anyway, I'm all nervous about my band killing me in the mean time. I've had most of the fill removed, but I still have a touch of restriction occasionally So lately, sometimes when I eat, I get a weird pain in my abdomen. Not up in my chest hear my band, but lower near my port, sometimes it feels even lower than that. I don't have any problems swallowing or anything, but like standing up after eating sort of hurts. I've also felt a twinge of pain (or something) when I twist wrong when I'm laying in bed. Also, sorry for the TMI, but my abdomen aches lots of times after I go #2. Thoughts on that? I'm seriously terrified of erosion. I'm planning on doing my revision in 1 surgery, and I don't want anything screwing it up.

I've made it through my first week post sleeve and am going strong. Started full liquids today, but boy am I sick of sweet stuff. I had about a quarter of a special k Protein drink (bad idea), and then later about 2 oz of Soup which wasn't too bad. I'm still occasionally having these weird stomach cramp like feelings, and I can feel everything when it hits my pouch....such a weird feeling! I did have my first NSV today (I have yet to buy a scale...I should get on that..) I went to get dressed and I thought, eh, what the heck? Why not try on the pair of jeans that were a bit too tight for me before surgery. They buttoned all the way with ZERO effort! Holy hooters that happened quick! granted, I'm not down a whole size yet, but I'll take it! I have also noticed (this may be TMI and for that, I'm sorry) that my stools are happening more frequently than usual (like 2-3 times a day) and they are all liquid. I know I'm on a liquid diet, but is this normal? Kinda weird. Other than that, life is returning to normal. I've been walking walking and walking some more, and the soreness subsides a little more everyday. I opted not to go back to work today because I'm just not feeling 100% just yet, but i will be back on Monday. Other than that, not too much going on, just thought I'd catch up!

So, I'm struggling with a couple things... First, I haven't lost a thing not a single pound, in well over a week (nearly 2).. Second, I've always been a super 'regular' person and I have barely popped in like 5 days!!! I've added more fiber, drink water constantly, pumped up the exercise.. WTH?! #Frustrated

This is my first post. I will be banded on Tuesday, March 7th. I'm trying to connect with the 3 ladies who attended my pre-opt class last Thursday at Dr. Abkin's office. I know I met Tanya and Wanda and another lady. All four of us were there together while the snow and sleet amassed outside. Needless to say, I'm nervous and somewhat freaked after the pre-opt class. TMI (too much info). I just want to know I will wake up after the procedure and that I won't have any regrets. Any words of comfort of advice from experienced bandsters? My surgery is at 9:30 AM and I have to be there at 7:30. :nervous Once again, I would love to talk to the ladies I met last Thursday. :)
