Future Bander from Egypt!
Bandista replied to Ossama El Maghraby's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi Oz! Your age will definitely be an asset for losing weight, and your gender, too. Congratulations on this decision to turn your health around. I am three months out and thirty pounds down so far -- one third of the way to my goal. Know that you will probably experience an excellent initial loss but then there may be a slow time while you get to the right fill, then you'll go down again. Working out will be an excellent aid to weight loss so start exercising as much as possible now or maybe you are doing that already. I think that's the magic ingredient. You are going to do great! -
Weight Loss after Surgery
TexasT replied to avelan4337's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I know you posted this in the "Ask Dr. Gregg" area, which is good. But I believe only a doctor that sees you in person can answer this question. You would need to have labs done in addition to a body fat analysis. Also, there may be an underlying condition causing your weight loss that has nothing to do with the sleeve. If you haven't already had a check-up with your surgeon, an internist or primary care doc, please do so. You can most certainly lose too much weight. -
The reality is we can't stay on a liquid diet forever! I truly felt the same when I started losing preop but knew it would be short lived and when u start introducing solids again the weight loss slows unless able to keep portions at a minimum. Just really think it through. For me I did not want to prolong getting healthy and starting a new life anymore , I wanted to begin ASAP!!! Now I'm few months post op and have no regrets !!! On my way to a new me. Life is short and I wanted to start living again!!! Think it through. Sorry but when u feel so good u want to share that feeling with people so they too can feel it.

Hey! My name is Jessica and I am just starting my weight loss journey. I have been "stalking" these boards for months and have finally gotten the courage to join in. I have read so many posts and have shared your victories and moments of defeat. .....Thank you all for being so honest. I have started my 6 month supervised diet and have gone to a seminar, that my surgeon held, this past weekend. I hope to have my surgery in Oct/Nov. I don't really remember ever not being overweight..... It was just who I was. But now, it is time for a change!! I am looking forward to sharing my journey with you all. -Jessica -
There's no surgery that can make you eat only low calorie foods and in the correct amount. The only thing the sleeve is capable of doing is limiting the amount of food you can eat, to help you learn to be satisfied with less. So if it is your intention to rationalize a way to circumvent that limiting factor, then the sleeve won't work for you and you will fail. Trying to get others to enable you by agreeing with your rationalization is further proof you're headed down the wrong path. All I can say is you need to readjust your thinking and stick to the program as outlined by your weight loss team if you want to salvage any success from your surgery.

My fat girl moment that made me invisible.........
Comfy_Blue replied to SlowlybutSurely's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Even though I was much smaller in high school and college, i have had people make fun of me for everything from wearing glasses, to having a Book poking out my backpack, to not listening to rap music. When I dyed my hair blonde, i was accused of being "fake". When i dyed my hair black i was called a wanna be Goth. It doesn't feel good but what i have learned from it is that (stupid) people are ALWAYS going to have something negative to say. you can be the embodiment of physical perfection and beauty and someone is going to be nasty just because. still, i'm sorry you had to experience it. I remind myself that people who are truly happy with themselves don't have to belittle others. If you have beauty and happiness inside, that's what you project. If you are full of ugliness and have issues with yourself, then that's what you project. Plus college boys are idiots. I remember my college boyfriend, his friend and I were walking to class when a girl who was probably like a size 20 or 22 walked across our path. The idiot friend (who was bug eyed, gangly and used to beg for food from other student because he used his meal plan money to buy a guitar, new clothes and other crap) burst out into laughter and gawked so hard like she had 10 heads, was purple, weighed 1,000lbs and was riding a unicycle. He immediately started up with the fat jokes and kept trying to get us to join in. We both just kind of looked at him and bf was like "so, she's heavy. Why do you care?" And i was like "yeah. how would you feel if she was laughing at you for being scrawny?" Immediately his friend tried to backpedal and say he was just kidding around and it was cool she was big and more power to her. I feel like people say stupid sh-- like that to fit in. I'm sure if we had jumped on the fat band wagon, it would've kept up. Screw those guys. -
Post-Op Weight
MegInNOLA replied to im sooo excited's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I used to weigh every day, but I confess that at this point, it's only occasional. :-) Part of that is that I used to NEVER see any sort of "bounce"--I had an unusual loss in that I lost until I didn't lose, if that makes sense. I never went up, not even a little, on a daily basis until recently, and I mostly am hanging around 191-193, depending on the salt content of my diet and the amount of liquid I consume. It's crazy but okay. I agree that weighing less often is sort of less stress-inducing, but I couldn't wait to hop on the scale every day during my fast losing phases. -
Hi everyone, Is anyone out there struggling to maintain their weight loss? i was 86.5 kilos when I had my surgery in Feb 2008. I had reached 92 kilos prior to that. In 6 months I got down to 63 kilos and loved it. It was so easy as I never get hungry. However, I now am fighting "head hunger"more than ever before and am up to 78 Kilos which is very scary for me. I have had top ups as I need them and think I am about right. I am very restricted in ths first part of the day and once I start eating I find by night time I can eat quite a lot. I am starting to eat wrong foods and getting anxious. I suppose there are no magic answers other han making wise choices etc. Anyone else struggling like this?? gaylene

No one but your surgeon can answer that... He may oversew, which would bring the size down.. my surgeon said that some docs cut close to the bougie, others loose, some oversew, others don't.. so the size of the bougie does not tell the whole story. My doc used a 36, over sewed, and left the Pylorus end loose to avoid potential problems. I have never had any problems eating what I want, or vomiting after eating... I don't lose super fast, but steady. I have read one study that said that the amount of fundus cut off during the surgery (to the patients in the study) did not predict weight loss. see page 10 for study, it has to do with fundus size, content voiding speed and weightloss with the sleeve... Okay so we have finally made it through the two HUGE eating holidays of the year!! Why do they have to be back to back??? Anyways I would love to here how everyone did managing their sleeves through the holidays?? Maybe even some recipes that you have modified to work for your sleeve?? I will start off by saying my main focus through the holidays has still been on getting all of my protien. I have finally started getting my hair loss under control and I don't want to back slide now. Even though I have super thick hair I can definitely tell a difference in the thickness!! As far as Thanksgiving and Christmas Dinners go though I am pretty picky....I don't eat pork because I think its gross so the fatty ham at Christmas was easy to resist. My Dinner plate consisted of 4 Cubes of Cheddar Cheese, a bite size Quiche, and two deviled eggs. Thanksgiving was the hardest for me because I am the designated Green Bean Casserole maker in the family and I don't make it traditional and by that I mean the mushroom soup is replaced with Velveeta there is bacon and ham instead of fried onions about a pound of shredded cheese on top!! Before my surgery I could really eat some of this green bean casserole I tried on Thanksgiving and my Sleeve didn't like it I also have a really hard time with poultry mainly because I don't eat dark meat and we all know that white meat can be a little on the dry side especially when my Papa forgets to turn the oven down until and does it an hour later(God I love that man) I was able to put some gravy on it and stomach it a little but the gravy was fatty and caused me to have a horrible Gallbladder attack. Thank God that came out last Monday =D I haven't tried modifying any recipes yet my Dad's wife did modify the traditional Pumpkin for me on Thanksgiving and made a sugar Free Pumpkin Mousse I will get the recipe from her and post it!! This was AMAZING!!! Look forward to reading your posts!

The first time I went for my psych eval, the therapist was a wackadoodle and talked about Chinese medicinal weight loss for a long time then told me my hour was up and and that I would have to come back for a second appointment. I was so frustrated to learn that a second visit was totally atypical and was also upset at the money I wasted with this lady. I quickly cancelled my appointment and went to another therapist. True enough, I did have to pay for two separate appointments but I really liked the second therapist, she wrote my letter after one visit, and I didn't have to give another dime (or listen to the crazy rumblings of) the first nut job!!! By the way, she had even told me that I should be lucky she "understood" my time crunch and that's why she thought she could complete my eval in just 2 sessions opposed to the 4 it usually takes. What a load of crap!

I had to see my therapist twice. The first time was mainly introductory while the second was more in depth and he basically "quizzed" me about the surgery to see if I understood the ramifications of it, the mental, physical, and emotional. It wouldn't have been a good idea to lie about being depressed. It'd be like lying to a mechanic about what's wrong with your car. Therapists and doctors are there to help you, so being truthful about your issues is what will benefit you in the long run. I told my therapist about my depression (heck, I even cried right there in his office) and I was approved for surgery. He didn't recommend I see him after surgery, but he does want me to go to some of the support group meetings specifically for weight loss surgery. It has helped.

loss of sex drive during liquid diet

Did anyone keep a book?
J.Diesel replied to Fit2btied's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I started an excel workbook. Tab 1: 1) track weight loss per month versus my forecasted goal 2) track weight loss per week versus my forecasted goal 3) track BMI and current BMI ratings 4) track chest, arm and waist measurements per month versus my forecated goals 5) I chart via a contol charts to see if I'm loosing to much or gaining weight, so I can change what I eat to prevent any additional shifts. I'm a 6-sigma Black Belt geek. Tab 2: 1) track my clothing size per month versus my forecasted goals Whatever method you use, make sure you like tracking via that method or you might stop tracking. -
Loalexylee, welcome to BP! My opinion, if things are getting serious, then why not? I would just tell him the bare basics, and only more if he asks. Don't want to scare him off with the gruesome details. Keep it light and matter of fact. I would say something like "I just want you to know I am a cheep date! I can't eat that much because I have had stomach surgery.... or weight loss surgery. I am healthy and fine and ready to eat! (a little). If that scares him off or he has a negative opinion about WLS, then its better to find out now. Have fun and let us know how it goes!

It's brave of you to expose yourself and be honest about what's going on. If it were me, I wouldn't tell the doctor. I had an experience recently when I was 2 days before surgery and my doctor flipped out, mainly because I didn't know to stop NSAIDS but also because I told him I had a bite of a brownie. In my case, the NSAIDS was certainly a problem, and surgery would have to be postponed a week. But his flip-out was so bad that I wasn't sure I wanted him be my surgeon. Doesn't sound like you've done all that much to be beating yourself up. And you have a whole week to turn that around. I feel for you about even doing a week-long pre-op. My plan, this second time around, is to do the absolute best I can. My doctor will know by my weight loss whether I've been dieting. You can't reduce your eating drastically and not lose weight. There are two things you should do. One is stop beating yourself up. The other is use periods to end a sentence. It's hard to figure out what you're saying when all the words run together. Good luck. Do your best, and think twice about "true confessions."

I had a plethora of NSVs this week that I totally didn't even realize! It's probably a good thing since the scale hasn't been moving much (almost 5 weeks out). I need any kind of victory I can get! 1. went off the (low) diving board at a public pool for the first time in years! I have a torn meniscus and was always afraid I wouldn't be able to get up the ladder. I also had fears of snapping the board in half! lol 2. I went out to dinner for the first time since being allowed real food and stayed on the plan. I actually went out twice, got chicken once and seafood once (all baked or grilled)... had maybe two bites of the accompanying mashed potatoes and rice (forgot to substitute my sides). 3. Went out bar-hopping with college friends and didn't drink a single drop of alcohol! These friends do not know about surgery and I want to keep it that way for the time being. I had to get very creative since there were many toasts to the newly engaged friend and to my weight loss (ha ha- the irony). An 8oz bottle of Water fit great in my purse for my trips to the bathroom! lol 4. I actually went to bars both nights this weekend and made it home without stopping for fast food. I used to be the queen of 4th meal- Taco Bell, Wendys, McDs. I was ssoooo tempted (this was the hardest NSV) on my way home because I was actually hungry. Instead, last night when I came home I had a few salami roll-ups and tonight had some milk. 5. I finally joined My Fitness Pal and started tracking my food. It's definitely not as difficult or time-consuming as I expected (the reason I put it off). 6. I went to see my psychologist for the first time since surgery. I was seeing her long before surgery and she was actually the biggest advocate of this for me and facilitated the discussion with my mom because I was too terrified. Anyway... she didn't recognize me! Legitimately, she wasn't just saying that. I was wondering why she didn't say hi to me when I saw her sitting outside the building! Whoo hoo! As always, thanks for all the support! Love this place!

Yay!! NSVs are so much fun =) It's amazing how much the weight loss really improves our lives. You are doing so great!

I have bcbs of al. I called bcbs and talked to them to see if it would cover my lapband and they told me if I met all the qualifications that they had listed on the website they would pay for it 100 percent and all I would have to pay was for the Hospital fee of $100.00. I went through the weight loss program for 7months without skipping a month and my surgery had to be within a year from my weight loss appointments. I had to prove that I have had a BMI over 40 for the past 3 years or 35 with medical related issues that required medications. I could only prove 2 of the 3 years so I had to send in a picture of myself for the year that I didn't go to the doctor to prove my weight. I think that is all I had to do and they approved me the first try. I used Dr. Dewitt at Princeton Baptist Hospital in Birmingham. Do you know why you was denied?

Please Help! :(
aunnyq@gmail.com replied to sixbuttons's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was sleeved on 10/1. And am a PCOS girl too... My biggest reason for surgery was to try to have a baby. I completely feel you! I have lost about 10 pounds since surgery but have stalled over the last week totally. I didn't expect to see the stall so soon. I knew it would happen eventually... But if I add back calories at all I gain weight. It's scary for me. I walk 2-3 miles several days a week also, and eat/drink around 400 calories per day. It's amazing to me that with so few calories I'm not dropping the weight faster. The doc is ok with my loss so far though. He says to make sure I am getting enough fluids and I try to get a min if 64 per day. And 80-100g protein. How are you doing on fluids and proteins??
