    August 2020

I already ordered chewable multivitamin, iron, calcium, Vit D and have these on hand. I also have unsweetened jello, bariatric powder shakes, protein powder shakes and protein drinks on hand. I plan ahead and feel comfortable that I am set to go on this new healthy, successful journey.
  2. I have the best surgeon in East Tennessee - he's in Knoxville. His name is Dr. Keary R Williams with New Life Bariatric. They're located in West Knoxville, in the Parkwest Tower across from Park West Hospital. He performs surgery at both Park West and Tennova West. He is the surgeon who is contacted for the more complicated surgeries. He performs the Sleeve, RNY, and BPD/DS. He also fixes anything he might find while he's there. I had a hernia and a spot on my small intestine that could have turned cancerous in the future; he fixed both. A friend of mine had a large cyst on an ovary - he fixed it. His staff is wonderful, as well.

    Body Lift Surgeon Recommendations?

I know you didn't direct this question at me, but some surgeons have a limit as to how many hours they'll spend on a surgery. I know Dr. Zachary doesn't like to operate for more than about six hours - and some surgeons are good for more or less than that. So I had my procedures done in two separate surgeries. I was OK with that as I didn't want some tired guy with a knife cutting on me. But yes - some surgeons are willing to operate for several hours. Someone on this or another bariatric site said she was under the knife for eleven hours with Dr. Sauceda. But you're right - his safety record is good, so he's evidently good to go for that long. btw: Dr. Sauceda was the only one of my consults who said he'd do everything in one day. Dr. Zachary and Dr. Shifrin both said they'd do my LBL in one surgery, and my breast lift and arm lift in a second surgery. I had one other consult in Chicago - the surgeon's name escapes me at the moment, but he was also going to split it into two surgeries (I think he was going to do them in different combinations and/or in a different order than the other two, but still - two surgeries)
  4. I tested positive after surgery (removed stomach was tested) in Mid March, bariatric surgeon wanted me to wait a little while before starting treatment. I started today - seven days (twice a day am and pm) of 2 x amoxil 500mg, 1 nexium 20mg and 1 x klacid 500mg.
  5. Your weight loss is not slow at all given your lower start weight. People have unrealistic expectations of bariatric weight loss based on what they may have seen on television or on forums, what they forget to do is account for their own personal circumstances: weight loss immediately prior to surgery, surgery day weight, age, gender, activity levels, medical conditions medication, hormones, fluid intake, calorie and protein intake etc etc etc

    Body Lift Surgeon Recommendations?

My surgeon is Dr. Dana Goldberg in Jupiter, Florida. I believe her to be outstanding, articulate and professional. Her skills in removing ample skin with fluer de lis tummy tuck and breast lift were commendable especially, given my petite frame. The results have been phenomenal! She will be doing my brachioplasty this September. I recommend her wholeheartedly. I actually preferred working with a generalist and not necessarily a bariatric patient plastic surgeon. She possessed nuances I liked in moving away from that fat persona toward a slim and fit woman. Her on site surgery center and staff were excellent. I had no qualms, and now given the COVID environment + risk - She can enlist tighter control and protocol than in a hospital setting. I felt safer and more comfortable at home recovering the day of surgery. However, highly ranked Jupiter Medical Center is close by should an emergency arise. She performs wonderful work on men and woman with varied needs. Dr. Goldberg is a nice balance of experience yet with a younger cutting edge (no pun intended) expertise. I interviewed five regional surgeons. I cannot speak to their fee structures here in contrast to other states or regions. Do keep us posted and many best wishes on your research and final decision! No doubt, you will be so pleased to shed the weighty extra skin. I'm so excited for you!
  7. Yep! It’s called Blossom Bariatrics in Vegas. I refused to follow the requirements of my insurance company because they said from the beginning of the process until the time I would have the actual surgery would be a minimum of 12 months. That’s ridiculous! Started searching online and I found Blossom. Had my surgery 7 weeks ago and I am down 39 pounds!
  8. Hey I’m 5 1/2 weeks post-op My progress has been stalled I’m wondering if I’m getting enough calories in I’m only averaging about 400 to 600 a day how do I get more calories in because I’m sure this is the reason why I’m stalling so soon in my journey I’m so lost my bariatric team is pretty much nonexistent because of the COVID-19 stuff that’s going on.

    Body Lift Surgeon Recommendations?

the ones you mentioned are all internationally known and specialize in plastic surgery for massive weight loss patients - they're very well-known in the bariatric community. Any of those choices would be great. I went to Lawrence Zachary in Chicago who also specializes in plastic surgery for massive weight loss patients. He used to be quite well-known in the bariatric community as well, but you don't hear his name much anymore - probably because there are more specialists in that subfield now (also, he's pretty pricey - he'd be more expensive than Cardenas, Sauceda, and Capella for sure - not sure about the other two). Peter Fisher in San Antonio used to always be on many people's short list, but I'm pretty sure he's retired now. some of those plastic surgeons (maybe all?) do virtual consultations - and Dr. Sauceda does email ones (I did a consult with him), so get a few - maybe 3-5. You'll find different surgeons will have different ideas on how they'd approach it. I found my consultations very informative. P.S. I'm not aware of any plastic surgeons in Florida who are in this category (internationally-known and specialize in bariatric plastic surgery), but supposedly the prices are more affordable there, and I'm sure there are some very good plastic surgeons there (I know some people on here have gone to them and been very happy with the results). You'll find affordable prices in Mexico, too. Sauceda and Cardenas are both extremely well-known.

    July 2020 Surgery anyone?

Congests on your loss ladymgsv! I didn't feel sick, no. I'm in St. Louis, MO and I my surgeon was Dr. Minkin at St. Luke's hospital. I paid more for him because he's one of the top bariatric surgeons in the city. After my surgery, I stayed 2 nights in the hospital and was super nauseous. After going home, I never once needed the anti-nausea or pain medication prescribed. I asked about this at my post-op and Dr. said it was normal for laparoscopic after a 2 night stay. I hate that I'm questioning him or the surgery but... From what I've read, I expected worse. I also feel hunger pangs, not rumbling but pain. I thought the process got rid of the hunger hormones? Hope I'm worrying for nothing.
  11. the whole thing about starvation mode is controversial. Not everyone thinks it really happens. Regardless, you'll lose weight - trust your bariatric team.

    Gastric Band Revision To Sleeve

I don't think that's common. The only time I've heard that is with Al Roker several years ago, and I don't know what the situation was with him - if it was dumping or something else. I guess it could potentially happen to others, but I've never heard anyone mention that in the six or seven years I've been active on various bariatric internet forums. As for wine, I've never heard of anyone dumping on wine. Although I guess it could happen to some since wine has natural sugars in it. People who dump (and again, that's about 30% of us) usually do it when they eat too much of things like cake and cookies. And you can avoid dumping by limiting or avoiding these things.

    Suggestions on multi vitamins

I Take the barbaric advanced ea multi. I don’t like them plus they are expensive, but they have everything that my doctor and nutritionist want me to take in the right doses and forms. Flinstones complete has a surprisingly similar nutritional profile (but smaller yet seemingly sufficient doses of most things) for a fraction of the price plus it’s widely available. but I would need to take a b12 and possibly iron supplement on top of this. I may switch to the flinstones after a few months. I’m following the doctors orders for now and choking down the bariatric advantage. It doesn’t make me sick and is a convenient all in one. My doc recommended crushing them and putting it in a protein shake...I didn’t like this option...
  14. I take bariatric advantage advanced ea chewable multis. they are quite expensive and taste bleh but I have no problem getting them down and they have everything including iron (my doc specifically required ferrous fumerate form which I have had a hard time finding even in vitamin stores or online) and a hefty dose (1,000mcg) of b12. many other brands do not include iron and b12 in these doses/forms. pre-op I was taking a cvs brand multivitamin/mineral which is one of the only multis I found that had iron (ferrous fumerate) and b12 although it was a smaller dose but seemed to be enough. but what do I know? I'm no doctor and my doctor and nutritionist both said that certain vitamins/minerals are not absorbed properly or efficiently after surgery hence the specificity of the form/dose. the cvs brand are horse pills and I am not sure if can switch over to them this early post-op and I also can't find the specific one I was taking pre-op. my doctor did say that at some point down the road (I think 6+ months), I would be able to switch to pills versus chewy/chewables. ironically, I also found that the flinstones complete (without iron although it still has iron in it) had similar nutritional profile as the bariatric advantage, although smaller doses of some vitamins/minerals like iron and b12, and I am trying to consolidate and take as few vitamins as possible. but I keep the flinstones on hand in case I run out of the bariatric advantage in between orders and have considered them for long-term. I am also curious as to how this would affect bloodwork, particularly for iron and b12. right now, I am just trying to follow the doctors orders and take all the vitamins and minerals in the required forms and doses. I also take the calcium/d3 chewy bites from bariatric advantage and love them. I may take those for life unless I find another brand that is as good. however, they are also somewhat expensive. they make the multi in chewy bites which are great, kind of like a starburst, but the chewy ones don't have iron. I believe pre-menopausal women and probably anyone with a deficiency should be taking an iron supplement. anyway, I won't have labs done for another couple months. so I can't say how it affects bloodwork, but I am curious myself and can keep you posted.

The Fruit punch procare health chewables are terrible too! I ordered 3 90 count bottles so i'm stuck with them for a while. My Doctor said just make sure they say Bariatric multivitamins on the bottle and NO gummies. So that's what I'm taking.

    Suggestions on multi vitamins

I take 1 Bariatric Complete Orange flavor (don't EVER get the berry, it's like berry flavored dog food!) and to me it tastes like a slightly stronger Flintstones vitamin. And I take 2 Celebrate multi's (without iron) that are grape flavored (these are actually good). The Bariatric Complete are sold in my doctors office and you can buy 2 bottles for $45 or order online and it's $20. I get the Celebrate on Amazon and I order a three month supply at a time for $46. The site I order the Bariatric Complete on is where I get my calcium as well and they're Bariatric Advantage. I order both the chewy ones for $33 or the tablet chewables for $25.

3 Months Post Op - Gastric Sleeve

Wow! I just joined this forum yesterday and have already read numerous stories where people are sharing bad experiences with their surgery. These stories really made me appreciate the fact that I had mine done at Blossom Bariatrics in Vegas. I can honestly say I had absolutely no problems there. Had my surgery on Thursday and was on a plane Saturday morning flying home and back to work on Monday. The only day I had pain was the surgery day but taking the pain meds helped and I did not experience any more pain after that day. I hope you are doing better now. Keep up the great work!
  18. It’s normal for your appetite to diminish during that time. I lost my appetite one week into my pre-op diet as well. I am now 7 weeks post op and I still have absolutely no appetite. I’m supposed to be eating 600 cal a day, but I can barely get to 400. I am literally forcing myself to eat every day. I spoke to my nutritionist—I had my surgery at blossom bariatrics in Vegas, and he said not to worry about it right now. He said I am still fairly new post op and this is very normal since I no longer have the hunger hormone. He assured me this will get better over time.

I'm taking what they sell at the Dr.'s office but ordered it on Amazon. Chewables by Bariatric Advantage. 20$ without Iron, 40$ with Iron. I know, pricey!

I didn't really care for the bariatric chewables and found that they made me nauseated after taking them. After a lot of experimentation, I settled on VitaFusion gummy vitamins. I know schools of thought were that gummies were a no-no, but it was honestly the only ones I could tolerate for the first 6 months or so. Then, I switched back to standard vitamins that you swallow.
  21. Part of the mental health evaluation of people seeking surgery is whether or not they have a rational and realistic view of what is possible In terms of weight loss with the bariatric surgery. Of course some people lie about that (health care professionals aren’t psychic after all). And the fact is that it is unlikely that people who have WLS will reach their full healthy weight, but will instead lose only a percentage of that (for many, 60%). That’s not my opinion, that is a scientific fact (ask any Bariatric surgeon or expert). When people have expectations that exceed that (and I have seen it many times on WLS boards, patients talking as if they are Joan of Arc determined to defy all odds), But it’s a real problem when people have unrealistic expectations as they can lead to significant disappointment, or depression, and sometimes weight gain. I don’t understand people thinking they’re surgeons are somehow it gets them, or have a low bar for them, or just know less than WLS patients. I have lost 100 pounds and kept it off for six years (and got a leg injury for the effort) and then regained the weight. I hope this surgery will give me a tool to keep it from happening. And if I get anything remotely close to being normal again I’m going take that and be thrilled beyond words.
  22. My Dr recommended that I take the bariatric multi vitamin but it is hard to chew and swallow bc of the taste. What other kind do yaw take? Sent from my Nokia 3.1 Plus using BariatricPal mobile app

    Paying for WLS

I had my surgery in May at Blossom Bariatrics in Las Vegas. They filed it with my insurance and out of pocket only had to pay $6000. I scheduled it several months in advance, so I was able to put money back into a separate account to go towards it. I was able to save up enough and was able to pay it off two weeks prior to my surgery.
  25. Oh gosh! My head is spinning just reading this. This is exactly why I went to Blossom Bariatrics in Las Vegas. We didn’t have to do that crap and they still file with your insurance. I can say that for me, I do not snack at all anymore. They will be removing the hunger hormone during the surgery, so you will not feel very hungry at all, especially in the beginning. I am almost 2 months out and I still struggle to force myself to eat. Good luck on your journey!
