."I see so many things about weight loss and how some still lose way past a year and then some don’t" that largely depends on where you start. I don't know what your starting BMI or weight was, but I was almost 400 lbs. I lost down to 138 lbs at first (have put on some since then, which is very common) - so yea, I lost for almost two years. For people who only have 100 or so lbs to lose (or fewer), it might only take a year.

I'm not a VSG patient, but I have RA and like you, hoping for symptom improvement and remission would be absolutely amazing. There's a few others on here with RA scattered around on here. There's a few threads about RA and weight loss if you search the topic in the search tool. I did have lap band previously and I can tell you that symptoms did improve markedly as I lost weight with that surgery. I'm hoping for more improvement with revision to RNY soon. I am having the same experience. I am 9 months post op and lost 108 pounds. I seems to be getting smaller yet the scale is very slowly moving or not at all. I think my exercise is moving things around or converting fat to muscle. I am around 1200 calories as well. I started riding my bike for 30 minutes after dinner to try a different exercise. I walk 4 times a day for 15-20 minutes then the bike ride. It seems to be speeding up the weight loss but nowhere near what it was a few months ago.

Yep, the closer you are to your goal the slower your rate of loss & yes, it can get so slow you think you’re not losing at all. You’re eating more, which you should be, and eating nearer the calories your body needs to function. Generally the first year is the honeymoon time when most weight if not all your weight is lost. Unfortunately, not everyone reaches their goal. It depends upon many factors including where your set point has reset to after your surgery. This is the weight your body is happiest at. If it is a long stall, sometimes a small tweak to your diet or activity can help. Do you still have appointments with your dietician? They may be able to make suggestions on what you could adjust & they’ll be best able to advise on an appropriate caloric goal for you. But consuming 950-1250 should still result in weight loss. I’m one of those unusual people who kept losing weight well into their 2nd year. I reached goal at 6 months & continued to lose, albeit extremely slowly, for another 11 months. I struggled to get to the 1300 or so calories I found I needed to stop me losing. BUT I’m not very active, am short & more finely built & in the downward slide end of 50. I eat a few more calories now. Many eat a lot more than I do to maintain at their weight. PS - Are you able to update your profile information on the left side? I am the worst person to ask this question 😂 I am always petrified of upping my calories. Though after the last stall, upping my calories did help (currently consume around 800 to 950 calories). But I can't imagine going beyond 1200 during the weight loss phase. But that's just me and my past experiences speaking. Many here vouch on having lost weight by increasing their calories. So no harm in giving it a shot. Try increasing to 1300 for a week and see how it goes. If that doesn't work, next try reducing it by 100. If even those don't work, then body will do its thing and all you can do is continue working your diet and exercise hoping for the scale to move.

Thank you for your input. It’s so frustrating. I see so many things about weight loss and how some still lose way past a year and then some don’t. I’m going to up my calories a little. Right now on average my total calories per day fluctuate between 950-1250. What are your thoughts on that?

Probably could be a stall. My last stall was when my BMI was about 33ish (last month, my month 5). Lasted 3 weeks or so until scale started moving yet again this month, month 6. Since you're month 10, I am sure weight loss slows down too closer to a year of surgery. Like the above poster suggested, try play around with calories and exercises and see if it makes a difference. It can get frustrating when you still haven't come close to the goal but hang in there and hope scale starts cranking again.

I'm not huge, was a 44D at my highest weight then 42C before surgery and some weight loss. Since Covid and telework I started wearing some really comfortable lounge bra I found at Lane Bryant and bought them in 3 sizes each getting smaller, also wear sports bras per a friend recommendation. On vacation a few months ago I decided to go into a Soma which I'd always heard had great bras for normal sizes. I got measured at 40 DD and bought 3. Found out they allow you to exchange as many times as needed within a year and I already went to a 38 DD. Very comfortable and very well worth it due to sale prices and the support. Good bras are so worth it IMO and love they make sure you are in the proper size. Boosts the confidence and clothes look better when the girls are properly held up!

That’s Chris McGowan. He’s in his own practice now, but used to be with the group I’m using. I screened with his practice but he does a ‘Gastroplasty’ not gastrectomy and insurance companies don’t cover it…yet. And, I think one can only expect tops a 50 lb weight loss with his procedure. That being said, he is regarded as a top surgeon, and my family practice doctor mentioned him to me. As I said, he’s highly regarded and his former practice has the best of the best surgeons. His advice is excellent. I remember watching this video about 5 months ago when first starting my research. Today I watched it and marveled at how calmly he speaks about the ‘stall’ and I had to wonder how many times he’s had to talk someone off the ledge when they have a stall after going through all this.

You will probably get mixed responses on that one. I did not ever cut them out completely but some people do. Some find eating them on occasion is too difficult and some nutritionist think they should be cut out completely during the weight loss phase. Mine said if you can eat them in moderation they are okay.

How tall are you? If you are close to a normal BMI the weight loss does slow down considerably and it eventually stops. I am 5’8” Mine stopped at 169 and after staying there for several months I gained 10 back over the next few. I have been at 179 ever since. I wanted to get much lower but had to accept that my body is happy here. I could probably lose a bit if I incorporated more exercise Though. You may just need to be a bit more patient, but you also may need to add more movement to lose more.

it could definitely be a stall - mine tended to be more frequent and lasted longer the closer i got to a normal BMI. Every time I'd think "well, i guess this is it...", and then the weight loss would start up again. if you're doesn't in another couple of weeks and you still want to lose more, about the only thing you can do is cut calories (or increase activity - or both).

It depends on if you're going through insurance. You have to meet their requirements before they approve surgery. Some insurance requires 6 months supervised weight loss before being approved for surgery. Your surgeons office has probably already ran your insurance and are aware of what the requirements are. So give them a call and ask the inurance specialist what you're required to do and ask for a timeline. They can probably help you better than we can, since it varies so much from insurance to insurance and surgeon to surgeon. Some surgeons are booked far out with their surgery dates. -

I've never heard of a prescription to relieve gas pain, but there's probably one out there. After I had my band removed, I want to stress this... I had no dietary restrictions, I had no difficulty eating or drinking, so I took charcoal capsules for gas pain. Disclaimer: please do not read this if you're post op weight loss surgery and take charcoal capsules for gas pain, because charcoal can block absoprtion of nutrients, so you can end up deficient in nutrients and protein. Stick to Gas X or whatever your surgeon recommends. With that said, Holly you could try charcoal tablets since you probably won't have dietary restrictions due to a weight loss surgery being on board. They really helped me a lot. Better than Gas X imo. You can find them at any pharmacy or on Amazon. Best wishes! -
Ok. I had my 4 week check up (via phone call). I told my surgeon that I didn't feel like my weight loss was going good. He agreed that it's not as good as it should be. After talking with him. I realize I'm not getting in my protein. I've been so focused on eating 4oz of protein. I wasn't thinking of getting 60g of protein a day 🤦♀️ What do y'all eat to get the full amount in? The shakes are making me nauseous now. I'm still on soft foods. So stuff like 2 eggs only give me 12g of protein. 4oz Refried beans only give me 6g. Im not sure how to get the protein in with out over eating. This is so confusing to me. Im a picky eater so this makes it even harder for me.

It'll definitely slow down and stop. You'll notice the weird regrowth. I had a short curtain of new hair growing around my hairline that the rest of my hair is now short enough to blend into. For the itchy scalp, switch to sulfate free shampoo and try popping an antihistamine. They both help when my scalp is trying to crawl off my head. LilaNicole's apple cider vinegar rinse tip is a good one too.

After being postponed twice with my surgery due to covid cases, I'm now rescheduled for the 27th of June. Reading all this about the scales and stalling I'm one that weighs herself everyday lol it's good that I've watched this video, such vital information for everyone having this sort of surgery for weight loss, thanks so much for sharing 🙏🙏🙏

My surgeons office says it’s normal for weight loss to be slow to start and sometimes even a little weight gain until week 6. If you are frustrated with it, can always switch something up. Eat more calories, workout a little longer, do a different workout entirely. I’ve been hiking with my dog the last few days for longer than our usual neighborhood walk and the scale is trending down. I’m out of the week 3 stall now it seems. The different elevation is probably helping me too—our usual walk is very flat, this new route is a little hilly.

It's great to here that your hair is growing again. Mine is in the middle of the loss cycle. There is so much falling onto my clothes. For the first time in my life I have short hair. I think I like it, my husband is less sure . My scalp is so itchy, does anyone know of any product that will help ? TIA -
I'm sporting a new super-short platinum blonde pixie cut, and honestly rocking it. My previous short shaggy cut was doing nothing for me, since the regrowth was a noticeably different length to the longer bits of hair. It looked pretty bad - just a constant "bad hair day". Now that my super short pixie blends in with the regrowth length, the thinned hair isn't obvious. My hair has definitely stopped falling out now, and is regrowing. I'm 8 months out.

If your high blood pressure, high cholesterol, high sugar levels were caused by your weight gain & food choices (the higher your weight the higher the levels rose) then yes, if you lose weight after the surgery, change your eating habits & maintain the loss & changes, the symptoms should not return to their previous high levels or will at least maintain at a lower, healthier point. If these issues have a genetic predisposition (occur in your family & are not weight related), they will always be something you have to watch. E.g. type 1 diabetes is genetic which you can manage but can’t change but type 2 is caused by lifestyle choices like obesity which you can do something about. After my surgery my cholesterol went from borderline high to the low end of the healthy range. My blood pressure was normal before surgery & now it’s low all the time. (Didn’t have sugar issues before but I know I have further reduced my risk for diabetes greatly. But talk to your surgeon & doctor for the best information especially as your medication contributed to your weight gain. -
Panniculectomy worth it?

It is typically performed by a plastic surgeon but for insurance reasons it’s considered a medical treatment. Lots of loss skin can cause back pain and rashes. Same way a breast reduction is often considered medical for the same reasons. I am going to have a panniculectomy for medical reasons (rash and back pain) paid by insurance. My surgery will be done by a plastic surgeon. -
