    Hunger pains after surgery

That's interesting, especially since our surgery date is similar. I have found that mine only makes noises when I feed it something it doesn't handle well. i.e. solid proteins - lots of gurgle and churn. Yogurt, soups, etc. - quiet as a mouse.
  2. My loss has been quite fast (I think) for a post-menopausal woman. I'm 3.5 months out and down 52 since surgery. But I'm not tolerating any solid protein except fish and so I'm really still in the soft foods stage: lots of yogurt, soup, stews. It is a big day for me to hit 800 calories, I've only hit 1000 once. But most of my loss was the first 8 weeks. It's been slow-going since then. Can't complain, with all my previous diets I'd stall out between 35-40 pounds and then start going back up again.

What does your typical day look like?

I'm a sleeve person...wrote this up on another post. My clinic sets a goal of 1200 calories and 60+ grams of Protein per day during weight loss phase. We can either eat three 400 calorie meals, or six 200 calorie meals...or any combination we'd like as long as net calories are 1200 per day. I personally prefer to do three tiny meals during the day, a bigger meal for dinner, and another tiny meal around 8pm (usually it's got a desert vibe, like fruit or cupcake yogurt, or a chocolate protein bar.) This is how my day usually works: (with a few different meal options...I like to mix it up a lot...variety is necessary!) 200 calorie Breakfast (oatmeal and coffee with Protein Shake for creamer/an egg and half a slice of whole grain toast/fruit and yogurt/etc) 200 lunch ( 3 ounces of pork chop or chicken breast with green beans/sweet potatoe with pecans and salad/BLT wrap/chef salad with hard boiled egg/homemade veggie Soup and slice of homemade bread) 200 midday snack (protein muffin/half a cup of potato salad/veggie and hummus/etc) 400 dinner (Crab boil/steak salad with eggs and swiss/protien Pasta with salad and homemade wholegrain bread/chicken stir fry/stuffed pepper/ vegetarian chili and cheese on a baked potato/etc) 200 after dinner snack (strawberries with chocolate sauce/watermellon/frozen grapes/cupcake yogurt/oatmeat with pecans and cherries/chocolate protein bar) I like a little sweet after dinner, and usually do this after I finish my 12,000 steps for the day...sort of my reward. I eat a lot of really satisfying delicious food. I'm getting an education about portions and making healthier choices. I'm eating a ton of fruits and veggies, lean Proteins and complex carbs. I LOVE my diet. I feel better on it. Tons of energy. Exercise is a big part of my day, too...and I have the energy to enjoy doing it. I drink at least 64 ounces of fluid a day. I have been in the habit of drinking all day and paying attention to drinking a lot because I used to take a diuretic and dehydration has been a risk. Water goes in the car with me anywhere I drive. I drink steadily anytime I'm at my desk or at home. Coffee, tea, lots of iced tea and Mio recently, herbal tea, water, etc. If my pee is darker? I drink like crazy. I typically walk 4000 steps by noon, 8000 by 5pm, and get a full 12,000 by bedtime. 1am? I do a variety of cardio activities....an hour, three times a week. (in addition to the walking) Weight loss has been slow and steady:) Getting close to goal:) Loving life:) PS...I'm a sleeve, not a bypass...but figured so much of this is universal it couldn't hurt to add to the conversation.

    No energy!

I’ve been doing a higher carb breakfast & protein after throughout the day. Try a banana & some good Greek Yogurt for breakfast. Also if you don’t have MyFitnessPal give it a try. You can but in your daily goals for calories carbs protein & fat. I track EVERYTHING on it including exercise & vitamins. Hope that helps. It’s worked for me getting in the right amount of protein carbs & fat is a huge energy regulator.

  6. Let me say hello! My surgery is scheduled for the 26th of this month. After six months of doing the nutritional visits, doctor visits, etc. I am not excited nor do I feel down about getting the surgery... to be honest, I just want to get it over with. I think I may have seen doctors 20 or more times. lungs, Cardiovascular, 2 or more trips back to both doctors, xrays , testing, nutritionist and so on. Everything turned out ok . Lost about 10lbs, started my diet early. Now I have these weird questions... If your stomach is stapled, if you laugh or cough too hard will that cause issues with the staples? What about scar tissue, I am a poster child for internal scar tissue. I wonder if that could cause a problem, later on down the line? OK, so Im starting the sipping thing too, it takes me like 15/20 min to finish an 8oz protein shake , is that right? I'm not supposed to start the liquid diet until the 11th I currently take 2 protein shakes, bfast & lunch, banana and low fat milk, snack, or Greek yogurt and or cottage cheese w/fruit then, regular dinner (but) can sometimes be too much, it seems I'm extra hungry, plus I've been walking for exercise, the more I walk the hungerer I am... I also eat 1 or 2 cups of crushed ice, that's an old habit that I have been doing forever... I am looking forward to your comments and input.

    Little Green getting little(r)

My appointment today went well! My surgeon seemed really pleased with my progress and how everything is healing up. The dietitian wasn't there so I didn't get to chat with her about food, but the surgeon said she would have her call me on Monday. I asked about why I haven't lost any weight in over a week and she said to wait another week and evaluate after that. She mentioned I could be eating too many calories but we both agreed that was extremely unlikely. I don't see how that's even possible unless I have some sort of freak metabolic issue post-op. Most days this week I could barely choke down a 160-cal PP shake plus maybe half a cup of soup. I'm not worried about the food, to be totally honest. I just need to get walking and keep hydrating. Today was probably my best food day yet although I admit I didn't eat anything until 2pm-- but after that, I had Panera broccoli cheddar soup (in two sittings), a strawberry banana Greek yogurt smoothie (over the course of 3 hours), and about a half ounce of feta cheese (allowed to melt down in my mouth before swallowing of course). I'm SO happy about the smoothie; I was really worried about dumping from high amounts of natural sugars but I had no problems and it tasted absolutely phenomenal. I got some bananas at the store tonight and I'm eagerly waiting for them to ripen! I went to the store on my own tonight and shopped for about 40 minutes. I was definitely shaky toward the end but I just sipped my water and took it easy. If we can manage to get up and out of the house before 8, tomorrow morning will be a good one for trail walking... but I don't have much faith in us getting up, haha. I need to go to Whole Foods soon to see if I can find soy-based products like yogurt that I couldn't find at Wally World or my grocery store, so that can be another indoor walk for me. Slowly but surely I will get there!
  8. I might be paranoid but Im 8 days post op and things like yogurt, glucerna and broth (homemade without an ounce of fat) are making my stomach hurt. Its like i wish i could take alka seltzer kinda pain. Also have had liquid stool for 2 days. 3-5 times a day. Has this happened to anyone? Is it normal or no Sent from my SM-G935F using BariatricPal mobile app

    Fruit Smoothies Preop / Postop

Thanks, I'm using necter unflavored powder, bipro water with them or vanilla premier protein. Spoke to my nurse and she said wait till I have had some vegetables with fiber before trying any fruit after surgery so 3-4 weeks and just to make sure they fit the rules. Now I am 4 days from surgery they want me on full liquids. I did make a Premier protein Caramel with a cup of black coffee and ice in the blender and it was great. They are just too sweet for me. The necter is fine in broth, yogurt and my cream of 98% fat free soups. I'm having my surgery because my comorbidity is my liver/bile duct and I already needed surgery for that. This surgery I pray keeps me from having liver problems anymore. They already had to cut into and staple my stomach so why not? I'll be glad when June is over and I feel normal again. 500- 600 calories a day leaves little energy to do much!

    May 2018 losers bench

Hi again guys! I’m able to get down some soft foods. Not meat sits well other than slow cooked shredded chicken. I’m sticking to veggies for now. And cheese and yogurt. That’s been all good! Because of my complications, I lost a little over 30 lbs between May 10 and a week ago. Now I’m stalled. Ah the good old 3 week stall! But I’m not freaking out since i lost so much initially from basically starving. As long as I stopped being stalled in the next 2 weeks, I’m ok with it. I’ve dropped from a morbidly obese BMI to obese BMI. Who would have thought I’d be so happy to just be obese 😂 I’m going to do the measuring tonight because all my clothes are falling off. I hope everyone is doing great!

    May 2018 losers bench

I was sleeved on May 22. I am now eating soft proteins only. Once l started eating I stopped loosing weight. I am having a difficult time eating because I am not hungry. I haven’t had a problem with 1 oz of tuna with Greek yogurt, 1 scrambled egg with cheese and bacon, or a grilled chicken nuggets. It takes 30 minutes to eat and I am full but no overly so. I drink a protein shake in the morning. Has anyone noticed a stall when going to a the next stage? I’ve only lost 18lbs since surgery and 31lbs since starting this journey. I am 23lbs from my first GW.

    What was your pre-op diet?

I just started mine yesterday. I was down .5 lbs this morning. I got my pre-op diet on Wednesday and was told to start as soon as I could get to the store. My surgery is June 26th so it'll be about 2.5 weeks on the diet. Meal 1 - 8oz skim or 1% milk with 1/2 scoop whey protein powder isolate and 4 oz fruit Meal 2- RTD protein shake or 8oz skim or 1% with whole scoop protein powder Meal 3- 6-8oz low fat, light yogurt (preferably Greek) with no fruit chunks <7g sugars and 4oz fruit or veggie Meal 4 - 1oz nuts or 2TBSP peanut butter or 1/2 c beans or hummus and 4oz fruit or veggie Meal 5 - 4 oz protein, 4 oz veggie with 1TBSP raw olive oil and 1/2 c whole grain starch or 1 slice whole grain bread or 1/2 potato Meal 6 (optional) - 8oz skim or 1% milk with 1/2scoop whey protein powder isolate and 4 oz fruit 3 Hours between each meal and drink 100oz of water or fluids So far not too bad. The hardest part is the 100oz of fluid. While I'm happy that there is some food on my plan, there's a convenience element to just shakes rather than measuring out a bunch of stuff and reading labels, but I guess the point is to get into the habit for after surgery. So the blender, scale, and 4oz containers are my new best friends. =)
  14. I lost 15 pounds after 2 weeks post-op and have been on a plateau during week 3 not losing 1 pound. Diet is non-fat cottage cheese and yogurt, egg beaters, mashed beans, sugar free jello/popsicles and premier protein drinks. Calorie range 600-800. What is going on? Any suggestions?
  15. Okay so here is the entire story here. I have posted in bits and pieces in replies to others. So I started my pre diet liquid only mind you. At three weeks prior to my June 13th surgery date. I have NASH or severe fatty liver or whatever they are calling it now a days 5/24th I started it. I did really good I was doing my liquid protein and broth, sf jello and popsicles and a cup of yogurt. Then on the 30th and 31st I fell off it because I had found out I couldn’t have broth nor yogurt. The surgeons office said the sodium in broth would not release the fat around the liver. And the yogurt was too much milk products since I’m using premier shakes. So that sat me back and it was a lot to lose I tried it and was so hungry I gave in and had a blue cheese burger at a restaurant on the 30th. Then my coworkers brought in my favorite pizza they thought it had not started yet so I had like 4 slices and doughnuts(2) a couple hours later. On June 1st I started again this time no broth or yogurt and it’s much harder. I made it through Friday, Saturday and Sunday then failed as the following this week starting on Monday Monday- 2 fried burgers with tons of cheese and on bread. Tuesday- large movie popcorn and butter Wednesday- small cheeseburger and beef with veggies Thursday- beef with veggies and chicken with veggies and cheese My dear hubby is freaking out about it and has me worried that I’m going to get to surgery and they will cancel it or open me up and cancel it. I started it at the weight of 311 or 314 and I’m now at 291 so I have lost some weight. So im just curious if I can follow the all liquid till surgery if I stand a chance of it happening any thoughts? Has anyone ever failed this badly this close and made it? or has anyone had surgery they went in and closed without doing it? Because they cheated. I know I did it to myself and well I own that fully. I couldn’t control my actions I will have to work on that a lot. But I’m torn as to if I should just call the surgeon office and tell them to cancel it because my liver is most likely not shrunken enough. If I do that I know he’s heading out a week after the 13th for three weeks and my insurance only approved the surgery window up till July 3rd or just be strict till the 13th and hope all is well. As well as doing a murelax bowel cleanse the day before. Oh how I wish I could have been stronger and not cheated

    I hate protein shakes

Get the unflavoured protein powder and put it in your regular drinks and soups, you can put it in anything you eat, yogurt, tea, whatever. Has NO taste but the protein is there. Have you tried that?

    June RNY buddies?

I have my pre-op appointment tomorrow and am not quite certain what all to ask. I stopped at the grocery store and purchased some goodies today on my way home for my pre-op diet. I start 10 days before surgery but am thinking about making it an even 2 weeks just to get in the groove. Skim Milk Lean Meat (allowed 3 oz. for lunch & dinner) Fat Free Ham Turkey Chicken 1% Cottage Cheese Fruit Premier Protein Shakes Dannon Lite & Fit Yogurt (6 oz. max per serving) sugar free popsicles sugar free Jello Dill Pickles Broth Celery Broccoli Cauliflower Cucumber Radishes 64 oz. of Water This is all going so fast. I had my first appointment with my surgeon on May 22nd and am scheduled for surgery on June 25th. Fast track for self-pay I guess. Yikes. Excited!

Need advice on getting enough food.

You had LapBand whereas I had Gastric Bypass so what I am saying may seem a little different but I think as far as nutrition post-op, it will be important and applicable. The three most important elements right after weight loss surgery are to meet your daily protein, fluid and vitamin requirements. Food is secondary because your body is converting your stored fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight. For me weight loss is achieved after surgery through meal volume control. I began with 2 ounces (1/4 cup) per meal and gradually over the next year and a half increase the volume to 1 cup per meal. With this minuscule amount of food, it is next to impossible to meet your protein daily requirements by food alone, so therefore I needed to rely on supplements such as protein shakes and protein bars. So since you are in the maintenance phase, the goals will change. The elements of protein, fluid and vitamins will still be important but rather than taking them as supplements, one can eat real food to supply those needs. According to my nutritionist, meals should consist of equal parts of protein, fats and carbs after the first couple years post-op. Always put protein first. Snacks should be limited to primarily whole food options: nuts, natural nut butters, fruits, veggies, boiled eggs, string cheese, yogurt with berries and almonds, tuna pouches. Avoid processed packaged foods as much as possible. In your case, you will need to assess your daily protein consumption. In general you should be consuming around 75-90 grams of protein daily. If you are under this amount, you will need to make up that difference by taking supplements such as protein shakes or protein bars. In my case I avoid sugar like the plague and try to limit some types of carbs (bread, rice, pasta) to one meal a day. Most veggies (greens) I do not constraints. It is just a matter of finding the veggies that appeal to you the most. Remember you can use fruits and veggies as snacks.

    Post op liquid diet

I got some gourmet soups from a local grocery store that makes them homemade. I put them in the blender with some unflavored protein powder and a bit of chicken stock if they need to be thinned out. I have that for lunch and dinner or thinned greek yogurt. For my liquids I rotate solid liquids (protein shakes) and clear liquids a cup for a cup kind of thing.
  20. So far (almost four months out), the only thing I've found that consistently gives me trouble is Mexican-style spices, even if it's super-mild (I don't like much spicy stuff anyway). My stomach has not liked that any time I've tried it. I get the slimes every time, even from just a bite or two. Otherwise, so far I haven't had problems, at least not consistently (and since it's not consistent, I'm more apt to think it's because I ate too fast or didn't chew well enough or something, rather than the food itself). I haven't tried soft/fluffy breads/biscuits/rolls yet (other than one tiny bite), but I've eaten toast and tortillas and such. I don't dump on natural sugars for the most part, as long as I don't consume "huge" amounts, so I don't drink a full serving of juice in one sitting (I'll either water it down or spread it out over a couple hours). I try to avoid added sugars over 5-10 grams, depending on the product (more lenient with yogurt than with some unhealthy treat, for example).
  21. Sorry. I used the 24 oz. Siggi's. With small portions it's lasted me a week and I still have 1/4 container left. Ty! Thats awesome! I never thought about using splenda in yogurt! This may be a game changer for me!

    June RNY buddies?

I'm June 26th. Started my pre-op diet today. While I'm sure there will be many times I'll be happy I can have some foods... fruits, veggies, lean meat, 1/2 potato, yogurt... prepping is a pain in the butt. There might be something to be said for the convenience of just grabbing a shake and going.

I like to add cottage cheese or Greek yogurt to sf jello. IMO it kills the afternoon taste and adds protein at the same time.
