    Introduction

Hi all! 26yr old male here. I was sleeved 01/07/2021. Pre op diet weight was 296lbs, surgery day weight was 282 lbs, and I’m currently at 262 lbs. I knew this would be hard but I didn’t know it would be THIS hard...I am struggling so bad emotionally - I never realized what a terrible relationship I had with food. I miss stuffing my face so much - and feel so lost without a constant supply of food to stuff in my face. I feel like I’m in a phase right now of “what have I done???”...I weigh myself and I’m happy with the results but then the day goes along and I find myself getting depressed that I can’t eat as I want...then I have to remind myself why I did this and that eating as I wanted is what got me to almost 300 lbs to begin with. I am also struggling with slowing down when I eat. I have always been a fast eater and am constantly having to remind myself to slow down. Looking forward to talking with and learning from all of you. :)
  2. Hey all, so I've been lurking for about a year, off and on and finally made an account once I received a surgery date. Backstory in a nutshell: This is not my first rodeo. Been on a bajillion diets and yo-yo'ed for too long. Had some success, some lasting years, but my Achilles heel is keeping it off. I like to exercise so mostly that part of the equation has not been a sticking point for me. I started my journey to WLS on Oct 2019. I wrapped up my insurance-required steps by April 2020 BUT initially had been doing so well on my own with losing that I thought perhaps I wouldn't even go the WLS route. Then covid happened and threw me off balance a bit, but I kept to my exercise and keto/low carb diet with success. Things went wonky in June when I broke my ankle and then again in December when I sprained that same ankle (grrrr). All my progress stalled while I healed and it didn't take much for me to gain nearly all my lost weight back in about 7 months. I asked my bariatric team to go ahead and submit my paperwork in November, I think. Processes were slow due to the virus, but I was shocked to get a pretty quick approval and surgery date for Dec 17. That was put on hold, but just this week I received a call that elective surgeries were being scheduled again. I have pre-op visits on Jan 22 with the anesthesiologist and surgeon. I am not sure if I'll have to do a pre-op diet. Guess the surgeon will tell me Friday! I'm pretty excited and trying not to be too nervous about the days ahead. I'm married and have two kids (ages 18 & 20). My username is kind of a private joke. No matter how heavy I am, I've always thought I had nice ankles. 😄 So anyway...Hi! 😊

    ChubRub's Plastic Surgery Thread

I just read that a few times because that is the month I had my gastric bypass surgery ... around Easter I was in a bad place my birthday was coming around and the weight was piling on despite every effort to fight it ... I did not think the surgery was going to happen I found out a week before it was scheduled April 29th 2019 and now I cannot believe April this year will be two years??? Has it already been eight months since I had plastics? I am not good with tracking time ... June 14 2020. I still have not worn a swimsuit officially but with the whole Covid thing I havent gone to the pool here and I have chemical sensitivities and not sure I wanted to risk my sensitive skin with chlorine ... I wish they would do salt water pools but they would never convert them ... they are shared pools per condo association. My Mom goes swimming as often as is possible. sorry your post got me thinking (thats dangerous!) probably for the best not to be too active right now. and thankfully the humidity is not too bad right now. took a while for me to be able to venture out for a walk around the nature preserves I love.
  4. Did the recliner for the first week and it worked great. Moved back into my bed 2 nights ago. My breasts are tender so I have to be careful if I try to sleep on my side. Best part is that I don't wake up 10 times a night to use the bathroom anymore, so I'm actually getting a great night's sleep!!
  5. Exactly! I have 10 more pounds to go to get to half my highest weight, but I know if I tell people that, they will guess my current weight and use that to calculate my highest weight, and I don't want anybody thinking about that!
  6. Oh jeez! 🙄 Life right now could have not been further off track for me. Here is the sum of all that's happened in a week! 1. I lost my 2-year Marketing Specialist job here in Dubai, United Arab Emirates - my role due to COVID is REDUNDANT and no longer required as APPRENTLY they don't have enough $$$ - but i know the whole story at the back end and who said what and all the politics. 2. I was on a weight-loss stall which FINALLY got over but then ^^^ that happened 3. I started feeling sick especially because i started vomiting up at least once a day 4. WHICH LED TO ME GETTING COVID 19 because HEY! us bariatric pals don't have a good immune system! So post op almost 2 months and IM SUPER SICK! i have Asthma as well. I have alllll the covid symptoms you can think of and I'm isolated in my home. Thankfully all my close contacts are fine but MAN O MAN does covid suck more when u CAN'T EAT ANYTHING! All I want is a big ass burger and a milkshake or SOME SORT OF SAVORY food item but i can't even keep down protein let alone SOUP! It's been horrible - my nutritionist said i should just try to EAT or DRINK whatever i can at this moment. But BUT! there is a brighter yet a little worrying side. Ive lost about 3kgs! in 3 days. (sorta happy in a selfish way) but i have such a strong feeling ill gain it back as soon as I'm covid free. but hey! 1.5 months and I've lost nearly 20 kgs! WOOT WOOT! haha.. trying to not die between these 4 walls so I'm trying to look at the brighter side. However every inch of my body hurts as i cough up a storm. Is anyone in a situation like me? I hope not but if u are - let's relate? Btw i posted an image here pre-op in my first post ever id like to post it again next to a recent one -> could use the motivation to stay breathing 1. Me at 130kgs 2. Me at 116 kgs same dress 3. Me at 113kg
  7. How terrible @Pandemonium. I hope you recover from your injuries quickly. Orthostatic hypertension is awful. Thankfully mine isn’t as bad as yours. I haven’t blacked out completely but my vision goes & it can take anywhere from 2 x 10 seconds for my vision to return & I get a little queasy for a short time. It used to happen all day long but thankfully it’s not occurring quite as frequently (mind you it’s happen three times in the last 4 hours!). A tendency towards low blood pressure is common in my family & when I was slim years ago I used to have a couple of attacks every month so I knew what they were when they started. My doctor put me on fludrocortisone but it didn’t help me at all. Has your doctor put you on any meds? I read somewhere that compression stockings/tubes can help.
  8. I guess I never realized how fat I actually was. Day 0, 47, & 240. Down 105 lbs. Still have not started exercising. Still eating like crap. I need to start hitting the weights again and upping my protein intake. I am currently losing weight when I am trying not to. I probably have lost half of my hair, but I had really thick hair to begin with. I have probably taken a vitamin maybe 10 times, and have thrown up at least half of those times. Even on a full stomach its a gamble. I think I am going to try to start cutting them in half or something. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Slide3.TIFSlide2.TIFSlide1.TIF

    60 minute pre-op requirement

Do what you can. Not sure if this will help, but there are some exercises you can do seated. During the pre-op seminar we went over some with a therapist. They even gave us a resistance band to use. Like others have said, break it up to smaller sessions. I could barely do 15 minutes in 2019, now I can go for 60 minutes with no sweat, literally.

    VSG 3 week Post Op

You lost 18 pounds in 20 days... how is that slow? I lost 23 pounds the first month but I was 321 on my surgery day and had a different surgery. I lost 19 pounds the second month and 21 the third. You're doing good on the weight loss front so don't stress about it. You are losing at a good pace. If you're having issues with water try something with electrolytes like powerade zero or gatorade zero or propel water. Or, even Protein2o as it has 20 grams of protein and tastes like Hint water. To help with the bathroom issues add some Miralax or something to help loosen things up. But... you need to hydrate yourself to help it along. Maybe suck on some sugar free popsicles if drinking is too difficult. As to the food front... I don't know what to say because my program allows avocado, tomato sauce, salsa, etc. so I have no suggestions based on what I ate because a lot of things around that time either had avocado or tomato sauce...

    January 2021 anyone?

I was sleeved and had hiatal hernia repair on Thursday, 01/14/21 too, but my procedure did not take place until 6:30pm. It was supposed to be at 4:00 p.m. but my surgeon was running behind. It wasn't as painful as I thought it would be, granted I was dopped up. I did have gas pain in my left shoulder and back, but as long as I didn't move too much it didn't hurt to bad. It was gone less than two days later. I had had no pain medicines for about an hour and a half when I left the hospital to go home and I was starting to feel a little uncomfortable then. I only took the liquid codiene that I was prescribed once the day I went home and didn't need it again. I also walked soon after getting to my room, which I think greatly helps with the gas pain. I got to my room about 10:00 pm and was walking around midnight. my whole stay at the hospital was less than 24 hours. I was there a total of 21 hours, from 2pm to 11am. This concerned me at first but I've been doing great at home. No pain at all except tender in my incision sites. Still working on getting my liquids in on did 58 oz yesterday. Started full liquids today doing protein shake I've finished one so far. Good luck to everybody that has surgery ahead of them.

    Anyone for September 2020?

I had my VSG on 9/10. My high weight was 451 and my weight the day of surgery was 308. I am down to 239 as of today for a total of 211 lbs lost and 69 lbs since surgery. I am fighting to lose every single lb at this point but figure that my body is just playing catch up with itself. Keep on working through the stalls! This is my 3rd stall since surgery. I have put in my before and after so far.

    Anyone for September 2020?

Revision from sleeve to bypass due to severe GERD and lack of weight loss was 9/19. I'm down almost 74 from the start of the process and almost 50 from the date of the revision. Still having trouble with a bunch of foods, but I otherwise feel great! No GERD since revision to bypass, which is totally wild to me considering I had horrible GERD from the moment I woke up from sleeve surgery.
  14. I've been working with a bariatric clinic since mid 2020 and completed my 6 month supervised diet with them, however, I've decided to move to a more robust and supportive program somewhere else. I have my first visit with the new place on 1/28 and am hopeful that everything will transfer over and they will simply need to resubmit the authorization to my insurance. (I had already received my authorization letter for the initial clinic) The person I spoke with at the new program made the comment that it would "help a lot if I could lose some weight and weigh less than my last appointment with the old program". This is not a requirement of my insurance, so, I'm thinking this is more a requirement they have set. Anyone have any pointers on how to lose several pounds over the next 10 days? I have an immensely hard time losing weight. I have been able to maintain the weight I had at my last appointment, but, my scale has not consistently gone down. I'm lucky to lose and keep off a pound a month and my scale has crazy fluctuations from day to day. I already do the following: - carbs at or under 100g a day - 128-152ozs of water a day - only eat 3 meals a day with no snacking Appreciate any advice or guidance.

Loose Skin? Lap Band Success Stories?

I echo the advice of those above: do your research on a different type of WLS other than the lapband. Even if you find a surgeon to place yours, there are fewer and fewer surgeons and fill/unfill facilities so if you have issues down the line, you may not find someone with the background and experience to help you out. Lapbands were a big trend years ago but are seen as arcane now. Today's trend is the Sleeve...this also may one day go the way of the band. The Gold Standard is the Bypass which has decades of data supporting its efficacy. (It is also reversible if needed.) With that said, I have had a band in place for almost 8 years. I'm one of its rare success stories with no issues. While I never made it to goal (my starting weight was similar to yours), I'm at a weight that is fine for me. No significant regains really, but when I do start climbing back up the scale, I know what to cut out. Not sure if I still have restriction/hunger dimmed by my band....I do a lot of the maintenance work myself. I had loose skin but I'm much older than you. It wasn't due to "quick" weight loss---my weight came off at the same rate as a traditional diet such as WW. It was just from having been obese. So two years ago, at age 60, I had a tummy tuck. It was absolutely life-changing. Best thing I ever did for myself. Not only do I love my tummy for the first time in my life, but having had plastics ensures that I keep my weight off and keep exercising....I would never want to ruin the results of the tummy tuck. Here's a photo of my tummy now---90% of this is the tummy tuck, 10% of it is my core work that I do every day to keep everything strong and toned. Sorry this photo is so large....something happens when I upload photos to this site. Normally it is much smaller! Good luck as you move forward but please: do your research, talk to other WLS patients to see their experience with the different surgeries out there.
  16. I don't think Bariatric surgeons tells what to except in terms of detailed weight loss. They went you to come in every couple of months and will ask a couple of question and will how he sees your progress. I hate going to the doctor and Covid19 didn't help. So, I asked a surgeon friend of mine(not bariatric surgeon) what to except in terms of weight loss in first year and he said if you stick to your diet and calorie intake on average except to lose 1 month: 10% of your weight 3 months: 20% of your weight 6 months: 30% of your weight 12 months: 40% of your weight and my weight loss fits exactly with this except for the 40% weight loss mark which I reached by 10 Months due to higher exercise intensity and really watching what I ate 6 months after surgery. My BMI was around 40 and I had no Pre-OP diet requirement, so I didn't lose any weight before surgery.

    scared

The exercise is to help you keep your muscles. But I'm in a similar situation as yourself. I have two back injuries which limited what I could do for exercise down to just walking. Then, AFTER surgery I developed some other issues that made even walking difficult. I have dizziness and balance issues that my doctor has been trying to figure out for ten months so I try to fit walking in 3-4x a week using something to lean on (usually a shopping cart or walker that I borrowed from a family member that doesn't need it anymore) in at 15-20 minutes those days. That's the most I can do. My doctor said that as long as I'm TRYING then she's fine with it. She worries about me though because I've fallen a lot (even once fell down the stairs in October while holding my 1 year old niece. I shifted myself while I fell though so I took the full fall and she didn't get hurt. I hurt my leg, hip, and foot in the fall though and it took a month to heal, but I'd do it all over again to protect her. I was babysitting my nieces while my sister was in the hospital with her premie son at the time and it shook me up so bad and I was crying on the phone with my sister because I was so scared something like that would happen again and my niece would get hurt. My sister had to calm me down on the phone and told me that I'd protected Madi and she was fine and to just hold onto the bannister and take it slower next time and sit if I got dizzy. It worked and it didn't happen again while I was watching the girls, but it terrified me.). It's hard to get exercise in, but when I'm not walking I do stretches and leg exercises when I'm laying down (it's the only time I'm not dizzy. Doctor thinks I either have a spinal fluid leak from a lumbar puncture I had done in 2017 when I had meningitus as you can go 10 years without symptoms, or it could be Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome as it's difficult to tell between the two as they tend to have similar symptoms). Anyway, just do the best you can, but don't overwork yourself!

    Setting Weight Loss Goals

My current goal is to lose 4 pounds a month. I only lost 3 pounds in December though (I did lose 7 in November so I guess it evens out), and so far I've only lost 2 pounds this month (though I did just get over a 19 day stall so... I'll take the 2 pounds lol), but I'm also only 21 pounds to my personal goal weight and I heard that the last 25 pounds is a pain in the ass to get off. I agree about that lol. I'm sooooo close to being in Onederland and it's driving me nuts! Anyway, the weight comes off the easiest the first three months, then the following three month it's still pretty good and then it slows. How much weight you lose each month depends on your body type, age, metabolism, and any number of things. Don't compare yourself to others because everyone loses at a different rate so don't think your surgery is defective if you're a slow loser. I, myself, am a slow loser, but I've still lost 120 pounds since my surgery (on the nose lol. I was 321 on the day of my surgery and I'm 201 right now). You can probably find something somewhere which will give you the average loss for VSG and you can always try and set around that, but personally it's better to come up with a realistic goal on your own that you'd be happy with. I set my goals on what would make me happy. My surgeon's office wants me to try to get to 165, but my PCP thinks that for my body type it wouldn't be a good idea and she's much happier with my own personal goal of 180. She said that she likes my goal far better.

    Gastric Sleevr Vs. Bypass

You need to look at the statistics from large research studies and not base it on what you see on the boards. Long time vets who are still hanging out here after several years post-op are likely to be patients who were very successful. And it could be that for many if us, staying active in the bariatric community might be one factor in our success. The statistics show that the average RNY patient loses about 70% of their excess weight, and the average VSG patient loses about 65%. Most patients end up somewhere around that peecentage. Of course you will always find people who end up above or below the average, and some WAY above or below that. The percentages get smaller the further you get away from the average. A 100% loss is a couple standard deviations from the mean, so you're not going to find a ton of people who end up there. My surgeon discouraged me from my goal of 100% loss, saying that only about 10% of his patients make it the far. But, i did it. And so did a few others from my clinic. But we're not the norm. I've checked the research. Studies show that about 10-15% make it to a normal BMI. Most end up overweight or class I obese (both of which are infinitely better than weighing 300+ lbs). But some of us do make it. But it takes some serious commitment and hard work. You can do it.. but it'll take a lot of dedication and effort.

    Gastric Sleevr Vs. Bypass

Wait, you mean to tell me most people who start at 300 don't reach at BMI under 30??? 10-15% only??? Thats not what I'm seeing across these boards, both surgeries people losing most if not all their weight , including my friend who had bypass 10 years ago she was 450 lbs, still having trouble putting back on weight since hes only 70 lbs now, but on here and on YouTube I see most people reach their goal with the surgeries...to me its a matter of keeping it off , and I wanted the bypass because it's easier to lose 20-30 lbs more than ur goal weight so that when u regain a few, you stop at your goal weight. Due to the malabsoprtion qualities it's easier to lose passed your goal weight in that first year so I wanna take advantage of that first year but I can't get malabsorption due to the meds I'm not willing to stop forever Sent from my SM-N986U using BariatricPal mobile app

    GOOOAAALLLL!

As expected, I had a bit of a bounce back once I started feeling better. I've also decided to officially lower my goal from 167 to 150. Has anyone else noticed how much different 5 or 10 lbs is close to goal compared to early on? Assuming I stick to 150, my BMI will be right in the middle of the "normal" range 21.5. I may get half way there and change my mind depending on how my weight settles. Right now my shoulders, collar bones, etc... are extremely bony - as is my butt. However, my belly and thighs still have jiggle and fat.
  22. catwoman7

    Gastric Sleevr Vs. Bypass

I run into people on this and other forums every day who've lost 100% of their excess weight. Granted it is NOT easy to do, with either surgery - you really have to be committed and work really hard at it. Statistically, about 10-15% of people make it to a normal BMI - so it's not common - but it's certainly do-able. the first 18 months is what's referred to as the "honeymoon period" when it's relatively easy to lose weight (and really push yourself to lose it then since it'll be the only time in your life when it's not that hard to do!!), but you can continue to lose weight after that. The farther out you get from surgery, the more of a challenge it is to continue losing, but it's definitely possible.

    Body dysmorphia before VSG?

I've almost always had it no matter how big or small I am. When I saw pictures of myself when I weighed 350+ lbs, I was shocked. Now in the 150s, I'm often surprised, too. I'll see a photo of myself taken a year or two ago and think "wow - I looked great then - I wish I could lose 10 or 15 lbs and be back there" - but then I'll check my weekly weight log and discover I weighed exactly the same as I do now....or sometimes 3 or 4 lbs less (so....essentially the same). I think the only time my mental image and my brain were aligned was when I was in the 200-250 lb range.

    January 2021 anyone?

Hi there ... well done you!! And great to hear how fab you feel! That is a heap to lose in a month!! Good to get motivation at this stage as feeling very anxious. 10 days to go for me and on 4th day of Optifast diet... it’s hard! Wishing you great success with it, I can’t wait to have the energy back too!
  25. I also have Blue cross PPO and they only required three months where I filled out: How I was exercising, What I ate and how much weight I lost. Then I had to have my doctor sign it. Of course that's on top about 10 different test.
