I have to admit, I did eat a few things that I know I would miss but ate in small portions here and there because I didn't want any weight gain.

    Need some experienced weight losers

I don't know if the psychiatrists use the DSM V Manual. In the most recent one, there is a diagnostic category for binge eating. There is a medicine that helps with that. I kept myself in check by remembering what it was I was striving for.. "keep your eye on the prize." I didn't want a weight gain to mess this up. For a snack, I ate a small bag of puffed rice cakes. Pre-op, I found that the unjury Protein shakes really helped. They were good tasting, and the flavor could be changed with sugar free syrups (Torani or DaVinci). The flavorings can also be used in sugar free puddings. I suggest you operate from a position of being satisfied with healthy food. Have a Protein shake 20 minutes before eating a meal. Then eat normally, stopping when you feel somewhat satisfied, rather than full. In between meals, you might use recipes from the blog, The World According to Eggface. Best wishes! Be successful!!!

    Benched by orthopedic

@@Jenny L I'm sorry to hear that you are having to be benched from doing your work outs. The impact on your joints with running and P90x is pretty rough. Did the Dr. tell you what was going on other then inflammation? Is it arthritis? Why steroids? There are other medications out there that can help you to reduce the inflammation and not cause the weight gain that steroids can cause. My husband was put on Celebrex for pain and inflammation after his hip surgery. Ask your Ortho more questions and if you can see a Sports medicine orthopedic they are very understanding of people who have joint and other arthritic issues wanting to be fit and healthy etc. I hope you are feeling better and on the med very soon!! Maybe as you mend you can reduce the intensity of the workouts for impact but not give them up all together.
  4. So I just got home from being dlweved. Stepped on the scale and im 12 lbs heavier than I wad when I went in. Anyone else have this happen. Im so bummed

Auri--That is something good to mention. The Water weight gain. My friend came home from the hospital and didn't lose anything for a while--she was big time depressed, regretting having the surgery done. But once she started losing, she lost great. 99 pounds total I believe! We can't focus on that darn scale for a while!!
  6. I did the same thing (eating to gain) because I was scared that I would be knocked back for not being big enough. Turns out my surgeon like to band people at around 92kg, so he made me lose all the weight gained or he wouldn't band me haha.. Crazy isn't it. I got up to 104, so gained 10kg for it.. Regret it now, could have been 75 instead of 85! But i got what I wanted and would of ended up gaining that weight anyway as it wasn't that hard to do it.

    Lap band vs gastric sleeve

I have not had my surgery yet, but I chose sleeve over band for a couple of reasons. The 1st being, my sister in law had it done, barely lost weight, gained it all back and then some. 2nd, I have 2 friends that were sleeved, and they are doing fantastic! I want a permanent change, and to be successful!
  8. Hi everyone. Just wanted to make a reassuring post to people that may be asking that question and give a little update that made me cheerful about that giant cyclops of a scale I have. YOUR SCALE IS NOT THE TRUEST MEASURE OF YOUR SUCCESS. I have to remind myself of that every day that I am tempted to climb on that thing to see just if this surgery may be the first thing to actually help me lose weight in my entire life. It is easy to get caught up in the misery of numbers not moving, or even when they add up while your body is replenishing glycogen stores during 3 - 6 week and so on stalls. (weight gain happens for some people during this time and is normal, don't freak out.) However, that being said. Sometimes, your scale is your friend. When you need that reassuring feeling of yes, this is working even though I can't see it, or my coworkers / family haven't commented on my losing 50+ lbs. (Don't worry about other people noticing, your heart and arteries notice and they are far more cool and crucial to your well being than people judging your appearance.) I was about a month and a week post op and I went through a three week stall. I started thinking the scale was broken and I know it isn't. We have two and I tested the sig. other on his digital one for skinny people and my giant glaring one for me. They were less than a lb different. So then I wait a few days in my depression of, "this isn't working for me after all" and I go weigh myself today and I went from 307 to 295 / 6 in about 8 days. Moral of the story. If you are doing things the right way, not starving your body, keeping it hydrated, keeping it in the healthy fats and calories you will come to see, YOUR SCALE IS NOT BROKEN ( and neither is your body / sleeve ) Good luck and love everyone. We can do this.

    Aetna- weight gain?

Ok so I've met with my nutritionist once so far. I had gained 4 lbs when she weighed me from the time I met with the surgeon at 284 and she weighed me at 288. My question is will I automatically be denied from that initial weight gain? If I'm able to lose that weight by my next visit, which is on October 16, and continue to either lose or maintain that weight will I not be denied. I'm just getting really worried over that initial gain. I also think it's a bit ironic that the very thing we're getting surgery for could wind up denying us the surgery that would help alleviate that problem. Ugh, oh well, please if anyone has some info about Aetna and all this please respond! Thanks!!

    Hello from Norway

Hi @aircooled. My wake up call was pre-diabetes. Once my blood sugar level passed that magical barrier into pre-diabetes and the: it's only a matter of time until you get Type 2 diabetes. A switch went off inside my head. I went on a diet immediately. Even taped a picture of a syringe by my bathroom scale to remind me of what I was up against. I kew for sure this was it, I was going to get healthy - no more denial, I have a serious problem. Well I did lose 20 lbs but life got stressful, I did great during the day but by dinner time I was exhausted and hungry - well weight loss became slow weight gain. I then realized I was NEVER going to be able to do this on my own. If even diabetes didn't provide motivation. Nothing would. My bypass is OCT 28.

    Beware of the UN-fill !!!

I had my band in 3 years ago, was doing fine with gradual fills then i got pregnant with twins. My band doc gave me a partial unfill. I later miscarried one baby and the band doc decided i needed a complete unfill to regain my health to make it through a high risk pregnancy. I gained 15lbs and lost them within 6 weeks post delivery. I shouldve gone in for a fill then, but i didnt because i got bells palsy and became more preoccupied with my paralysis than my weight loss. With the strong steroid medications i had to take for that it was hard and i was getting the bloated side effects of steroids but i managed to maintain my weight loss and didnt gain but i was feeling defeated for not having made any progress for almost two years. I recently kicked that fear out, got my fills back in and am losing again. Point is, I empathize with how an unfill can lead to a phase of frustrations and defeated feelings, especially when theres a lack of support from a medical team that understands your unique situation and needs. IMO after having an unfill its such an important phase to stay connected to a support system to stay in a positive mindset. Like so many here have said, unfills can sometimes be vital to a healthy progress, and dont necessarily result in weight gain. I wish you all the best with your next procedure, good luck :-)
  12. I had my sleeve about 5 weeks ago and weighed today - scale says I gained three pounds?!? But I haven't eaten anything I'm not supposed to eat! I started exercising 3 days ago, could that show up as weight gain?
  13. Weight gain 5 months post op?!?

I swear I haven't eaten anything I'm not supposed to. I did start exercising a few days ago, could that be it?

That was supposed to be 5 weeks, not 5 months.

    more random thoughts...

I agree with quick weight gain if non compliant. And I fills seem to go with just a bit more food than usual. But I'm in the camp that doesn't weigh themselves too much. Much of my adult life the scale has not been my friend. It truly affects my mood for the day. I can tell by clothing and other ways if I'm on track and fine. I do weigh in at my Drs. appt and sometimes at friends houses but do not keep a scale in the house.
  15. Hello everyone I hope y'all are having a good day, I am undergoing Venus freeze to tighten my skin and help to get rid of the fat in my neck and arms. I am desperately trying to avoid the expense, pain and possible scars from plastic surgery. I have had Venus freeze on my neck and it turned out rather well. I didn't want "turkey neck" and I couldn't afford plastic surgery. Granted, the Venus freeze isn't cheap. It's $200.00 per treatment. The treatments take about an hour. I get five treatments for $1,000.00. They spread glycerin on your skin and use a machine with technology that combines both Multi Polar Radio Frequency (RF) along with Pulsed Magnetic Fields. These two types of energy work in synergy to penetrate multiple layers of skin, heating it from the inside. Why they call it a "freeze" I have no idea. The reason I am posting this is because I have a friend that had another type of WLS and she had the Venus freeze on her neck and was not in a "losing" state of weight or a stable weight. She was gaining weight, then losing weight, then gaining weight. She IS NOT as happy with her results as I am. Her results were not as good as mine were. The RN that runs the medical aesthetics practice that I go to had tried to warn her about the treatments being affected by weight gain and loss and gain---but she didn't listen. What I'm saying is if you are considering getting the Venus freeze be aware you should be at least at a stable weight and better yet be LOSING weight when you get the treatments. Blessings, Kathleen

    Scary stuff!

One other thing - I have a number of problems after the surgery and one it didn't fix. I was hospitalized for malnutrition badly enough I got told I ws going to die. I still tell people get the surgery. Because 98.5% of people have no problem and the biggest issue they have is weight gain. I would rather enjoy the quality of life that I had in swimming, running, etc. and the memories of that then sitting on my can doing nothing. I don't regret the surgery. If I can say that, isn't giving your life and health worth the chance? My stuff is rare and I had GI problems to begin with. If you can get the surgery DO IT! It is worth it.
  17. Well I am experiencing the week 2/3 stall! No weight gained or lost. I know it's part of the process but still disheartening. Anyone else experiencing this?
  18. I am 16 days post op. I had lost 29 lbs in 2 weeks. Now I gained 3 lbs! WTH! I don't understand? I am doing what I am supposed to. Is this normal? I am still on pureed foods. I added 1 tablespoon of pureed chicken breast instead of a protein shake to fight the fatigue. Could that have done it?
  19. Update: After taking another x-ray and nothing has changed with the band, we're going back into surgery next month. I appreciate all the input, and 2muchfun mentioned the band coming unbuckled. I feel like that is all that is left, as we have checked everything else. My doctor says he's never had that happen before. Dr. Kureshi has been very supportive, and open about this. He is over the bariatric unit at TMC in Denison, TX, and they've just received awards for their efforts that rank them above others in north Texas. I have confidence them. I have read enough forums to know that when I made this post, that I would get the usual, "Control your eating" responses. Because, that's why I shelled out 15 grand in cash, to get a surgery that I didn't need, because all I had to do was watch what I ate! <sarcasm> I have tried it all. Atkins, juice diet, Zeal, Plexus, etc, etc. Even after the band, I walked 3-5 miles every night. At the end of the week, I had gained 2 lbs. "It's muscle!" everyone said. I could care less! Weight gain is weight gain to me! I had an episode Jan. 4. The wife made a meal of red Beans and cornbread. All I can figure is that after I ate, it expanded in my stomach, possibly forcing the band to unbuckle. I had intense fever that night, and then again 2 days later. For the next few days, I had to go back to liquids, broths and Soups. Before the event, I had normal restriction, and just a cup of food would keep me full for hours. A cup of coffee, and about 3 of the Peanut Butter toast crackers is all that I could get in for Breakfast, and that would keep me full until lunch. I was losing weight steadily. After the event, when I could start eating, I noticed that I could eat foods that before I couldn't. Rice, potatoes, heavy beef, etc. So, back under the knife I go. If the band has simply come unbuckled, then the doctor will re-buckle, and stitch it so that it can't come undone. I will keep everyone posted. Thanks again for all the support!

What causes weight gain after sleeve surgery?

What causes weight gain after sleeve surgery? The exact same things that cause it before surgery. Too much food and no exercise. The surgery is only gonna give you a helpful tool to limit you intake. The rest is up to you. You have to change all your eating habits and get you bod moving. Yeah, yeah, yeah.....I know....you dieted and exercised before. Really, you gonna stick with that story. The surgery is your chance to get it right. Eating small portions require you eat the correct nutritional food or you will become weak and tired. Eat too much and it will hurt. As you adjust to the new eating guidelines and begin losing weight, you'll gain the energy to exercise and workout and do all the things you've been missing. Then over time, these new guidelines will develop into new lifestyle habits which will stay with you when you reach your goals. So in the end........you won't overeat the wrong foods and sit around on your ass doing nothing and gaining weight. -
  21. Is weight gain caused by mindless snacking and grazing? Drinking milkshakes all day long? I haven't had my surgery yet, but I'm curious how weight gain happens a year or two after the surgery "honeymoon" period is over. If you're stomach is still small, with just a bit of stretching, even if eating "slider" foods how can weight gain be significant unless you're consciously trying to eat, eat, eat all the time? I think most of us gained weight by doing just that, but isn't it harder to snack all the time after the sleeve? Any thoughts would be appreciated!

    low protein problem

Thanks for the input and questions. I don't count calories because the NUT instructed the class to focus on low carb high Protein. I have looked back at what I have eaten for the past week and the calories are around 1000. I swim laps in the community pool (big) and alternate the breast stroke, side stroke, back stroke and don't coast after turning. My main concern is the low protein (yes the weight gain is bothersome but if I am not absorbing the protein consumed I worry that I will become malnourished) I am not against increasing my protein intake, actually I have tried adding addition protein Snacks to get up to 100 gm of protein. I managed to get to goal one day but I was eating almost constantly. I had to stay aware of the time and make the snacks in advance so they were handy. Eating constantly is not a lifestyle I want to adopt and taking food with me when running errands is not especially convenient.

    low protein problem

I'd say take a look first at your calories for weight gain. I have to count everything I put in my mouth, and I have to eat pretty low calories not to gain weight. I doubt if the addition of a shake has caused the weight gain, it's more likely due to an increase in calories. If you add the shake to get the Protein, you have to leave something else off. I use myfitnesspal and am brutally honest with myself about what goes in my mouth. Also, 70 gm of protein isn't low by most standards. What's your objective for trying to increase it?

Congrat AuriP on getting your walks in. Just got caught up reading all the posts since Beni started this group. Lots of good tips. Thanks Beni for starting this group it helps me keep focused on the long haul. No more struggling up steps, no more airplane seat extenders, no more buying clothes I really don't like just because they fit, no more giving excuses to get out of day trips that consist of walking more than 2 blocks, no more Cpap, no more Pre Diabetes & no more yo yo dieting & weight gain. KarenAllen you got this .... You'll be home soon. October is a great month to finally win the battle!!
  25. No advice, but good luck to you. The mental aspect of this journey can be difficult and I hope that part of your preparation for surgery has addressed this. I think your doctor is right. At your age, even with stretched skin from weight gain, all of your collagen is still intact. That gives you a snap back feature that older people lack. Working out consistently will ensure your success with skin rebound.
