December Sleevers and Veterans: How many calories 2 weeks post-op?
Joy0125 replied to DanaInNewOrleans's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Dana-if you are losing, do what you are doing. I had started a stall so asked a similar question and so many people responded with lower calories than I was. I was similar to you with calorie count and I was getting in all my protein and water. I panicked and cut back because I thought I was too high and I think it prolonged the stall. I went back to my prior calorie count and poof, started dropping again. Everyone is well intentioned, but our bodies, requirements, and tolerances are different. Focus on protein and water goals your dr gave you. -
Calories to maintain post-op... Figured out maybe?
Wayne Hunt posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
In a previous thread, I was bemoaning the fact (ok, whining a bit) about the fact that my nutritionist wouldn't give me a straight answer as far as how many calories (et cetera) I was supposed to be sticking to post-surgery in order to lose weight... Being the data geek that I am however, I might have been able to figure it out myself but wanted some confirmation of my thoughts. Over the past several weeks, I've been "stair stepping" my weight loss. Between 7-10 days to lose a pound or so. Fat is burned off at a typical rate of 3500 calories per pound, right? Looking over my MFP log, I seem to be consuming between 800 to 1200 calories per day, so given the idea of sitting on a 10-day plateau, running an assumed 350 calorie deficit, can I presume that my post-op "maintain weight" calorie count is somewhere between 1200 and 1300 calories? I know Protein and exercise are more important. I'm now getting my protein (between 70 to 110 grams per day) but I still have physical limitations (and mental ones too) that keep me from exercising as I should. Thoughts? Wayne -
I had my first BM today after surgery which was on Monday, 09/16. I am on an all liquid diet for 7-14 days, so I have diarrhea (TMI, I know). However, I just want to know if this is normal. I thought I wouldn't have a BM for 5-7 days, so I am just a bit early. I feel like I have been doing everything correctly. Vitamins, liquids, walking, passing gas, but no Protein for these first two weeks. My doctor just wants me to stay hydrated and to heal. Thank you for any advise from those that have been through this stage.

I would try and up the protein intake to about 70+ (try myfitnesspal.com to help keep track) and also the water. Good luck and hope you feel better soon.

MisforMimi replied to MisforMimi's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Mark your calendars!!! I wanted to let you all know about our upcoming meeting next Sunday 2/8 at 3 pm at the Lyons Den Cafe at 10415 Beardslee Blvd in Bothell. Please spread the word with friends that would be interested in joining us. There is a several year old thread about people wanting a meeting in this area and it's finally happening along with some groups in different locations!! Exciting times.A I'm taking the liberty to create a theme for the meeting: Protein, protein, protein!! Bring in a couple 1-serving portions of your favorite protein powders in a labeled plastic baggie. We can swap and try products we've not tried before. If you prefer ready-go-to drinks or bars bring a chilled sample and we'll have a few cups on hand. We will have a room reserved and everyone should be prepared to make a purchase from the cafe. Let Kay or myself know if you have questions or concerns. Thanks and see you all there! Michelle aka M is for Mimi -
Nectar, by a company called syntax makes protein powder to add to water for a juicy drink, not milky. I love them. Can be bought online or in some health food stores....vitamin shoppe, cape cod nutrition are vendors in my area. Two flavors I recommend are roadside lemonade and ice tea.
-
I also hate milk and don't drink it. Muscle milk lite in chocolate flavor is pretty good ( despite the name, there is no milk in it). Premier protein is OKAY, but a little milky. I like it better though because you get more shake and protein for the calories, and less carbs. Don't do the Atkins shakes or EAS, way too milky tasting. I haven't tried Nectar, but it sounds delicious.

Ugh that's rough. Have you tried the pouch reset diet? You do a test to see how much cottage cheese your pouch allows then measure what you took out of the container with Water. Based on the amount of water in there, you can determine if your pouch has stretched or not. Then you go on the re-set diet. I've heard this mentioned a lot for people in your shoes. http://www.bariatricfoodie.com/the-5-day-pouch-test-cottage-cheese/ Like everyone says, back to basics. Protein first, Vitamins and water. It's really hard to do this without the support of the people closest to you and it's so easy to be tempted. I've been depressed as well, and what's lifting my spirits is controlling my diet using this tool and seeing the pounds go down. Do you have the time to plan your meals for the next day? It sounds like you're not the one controlling your diet, and I bet if you meal planned for the next day, you wouldn't get stuck with only bad choices. Preparation is the key to success. I know it can be hard to find the motivation to meal prep or exercise, but i think a big source of relieving depression is finding control of your life. Can you talk to your husband/parents about how their behavior is affecting you? I'm so sorry you're going through this. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Me and water. Why?
Tracy46545 replied to tennessee1031's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Tn1031, Thin covered why you shouldn't drink with meals. I'll cover why the quantity of Water is important, ok? Water flushes the toxins out of your body, specifically out of your brain cells as well as your internal organs. It hydrates your skin which promotes elasticity (ie, so the skin will not sag quite as much as you lose the weight) and often if you drink water when you think you're hungry you'll realize that you were thirsty, and not truly hungry. So, it's important. Having said all that, I count all water that goes in my mouth whether it be Crystal Light, tea, Protein drink made with water...whatever. Maybe that's not right..but it's how I do it. -
Good eating Habits

Get a tracking so and put down everything. I t will tell you protein carbs etc -
My husband is a type 1 diabetic but wasn't doing all he could to give himself the best care. I didn't ask him to modify his eating when I had surgery, but he did and he lost weight like crazy. He also does all the cooking, so I think that made it easier for him to make the jump. We do super high protein/low carb dishes and snacks. He chose to come to the gym with me and that was a huge game changer. We now do that and all kinds of activities like bowling, disc golf, etc. together. All of our friends joking refer to us as "the power couple" since we're both healthier, more fit, happier, and super active. Best of luck to you and your husband on your journey!

How do I eat 3 "meals"/day AND drink 80 oz of fluid/day?
BLERDgirl replied to billitant's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Your rule does sound complicated. I was instructed to have a 30 min window on each side of eating. Simply put you don't want to eat and drink together. Like @@Elode I start with a glass of Water when I wake up. However my recommendation was 64 ounces of Fluid. Most days I drink a 20 ounce Protein smoothie for Breakfast with anywhere from 30 -38 gms of protein in it. I then drink between 40 - 48 ounces of water through out the day. All total I get 60 -68 ounces of fluid in. Perhaps review your diet with your nutritionist. You obviously need an adjustment in things if your are dairy intolerant. -

February 9th - getting ready for preop diet
ANewMe16 replied to Nicole318's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I hadn't thought about how good of an idea it would be to start Protein shakes and upping my Water intake pre op to make things easier post op. very smart idea. When is your surgery scheduled? -
welcome! my surgeon allowed me to eat during my pre-op diet. He put me on a high protein low carb diet. That meant no dairy except eggs and cheese, no veggies unless they were green and leafy. I could have all the protein I desired and my carbs had to be under 20 grams a day. I did it and lost 10 pounds before my surgery. I also had the sleeve and I am so grateful for it. Congrats on getting approved, it gets better from here!

So far so good. I got up at 5am and did 20 minutes on my treadmill at level 3 with a 2 incline. Goal is to work up to 45 minutes before surgery. I also made arrangements with my trainer to work with me after surgery to minimize the saggy skin. Bless her heart, she is only charging me $30 a week. My goal is to run a 5k, then a 10k, then a 1/2 marathon. Of course this will take lots of time, but I am determined. This morning is going well so far. Seems strange that I am not hungry. I had my first protein meal at 6am and will have my second at 9. It was orange cream flavored and I mixed it with Almond Milk. YUM. Been sucking down the water too. Since I can have Crystal Light with my water I mixes Sunrise Orange with it and it is delish. Brought some beef broth and jello with me to work so I will have some variety throughout the day with my five protein shakes. I am not stupid to not know that this is not going to be easy, but like anything else, once I get through the third day I will be on zoom. This means too much to me to screw up now. Follow up - it is not 420 pm and I am almost done with day 1. whoo whoo. My favorite part of the day was the jello. It gave me something to chew on. LOVED IT!! I think if I keep up my upbeat attitude it will go swimmingly to the end. I sure do hope so anyway. Downward here I come.

Nausea, sweating, and bears...oh my!
mschacht replied to mschacht's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ok...mashed potatoes is just a supplement food to my protein. It's not all I eat but I can only do so much yogurt! Lol. Refried beans today for sure! -
I had purchased patch vitamins and EZ melt vitamins to meet vitamin requirements. Purchased Propel water at Sam's club, 15g protein, 0 cal, 0 sugar to meet liquid intake to prevent constipation. Purchased from Bariatric pal soups, chocolate drinks, shakes replacements to be sure all protein was met. After surgery on the 28th of August 2020, no pain, some discomfort. Went home the next day after x-ray showing no leakage at Mayo Hospital in Florida. I did walk in place in the hospital to help release excess gas. I did purchase a abdominal binder on Amazon and used it after the surgery. This helped a great deal and Dr said this was a good idea to do this. My goal is BMI 20 or less. Enjoy your healthy journey. Dr. Stephen Bowers did over 1000 gastric bypass surgeries and he was awesome.

My doctors office faxed in my information last Wednesday afternoon and at 8:30am Thursday morning, I received the phone call that I was APPROVED for the Sleeve. I am beyond excited right now. I received a call from the surgeons office and I had to stop taking my Omeprazole for 2 weeks and have a bacteria test done on my stomach. My appt is scheduled for July 5th for the test and then I get to schedule for my surgery, I am hoping for July 23rd. My question for everyone that has already had the surgery, what do I need to take with me for my hospital stay?? Also, I would like to find out approximately how much money will be spent on protein powders.
-
You can get all your Protein in from foods, like others said. But I have trouble getting in enough, so I still really like my protein supplements, especially since I'm really bad about getting in breakfast. If I drink an Isopure zero carb every morning I know I'm starting off my day with some good protein to work off of. So it's nice to have them as back up sometimes for those days you just don't feel like it. The uncomfortable sensations do go away. It just takes time for your body to adjust. It is still really easy for me to hit that past full point accidentally, but I never have any discomfort drinking anymore.

Realization - Eating Habits
NurseGrace replied to NurseGrace's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
That could be it too however personally I THINK I am eating enough. I am averaging about 600 calories a day but I've been making them count for the most part with good Protein and stuff. It's also not helping that I am looking for work right now so I am at home TOO MUCH. -
Wow congratulations, congratulations, congratulations. That's so great. Would love to know more about your experience, maybe we can talk if you're comfortable. What type of exercise do you do? What Protein shakes do you recommend? Have you had alot of lose skin? Please share anything and everything. Can't wait to hear more from you

Surgery Date July 23rd - Pre Op Diet, do I don't I
ExcitedButNervous posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi All I have a surgery date of July 23rd 15 , which makes 30 days today until I go under the knife! What concerns me most is how much of a mental thing the pre-op diet is. I have been on/off diets all year with my only success in January, when I did 28 days of Protein shakes only (its a diet called EXANTE here in the UK). Since then it has been an absolute struggle to do anything, hence the decision for surgery. Yesterday was supposed to be the start of the pre-op diet (which I have been told I only need to do for 7-10 days before, but wanted to make a good start). However, I ended up feeling hungry and then went into an overeat mode in the evening, sigh. I have woken up very early this morning with load rushing through my head, and I am now thinking that as I am paying £9000 out of my own pocket, I should really make a better effort. So my question is, what do I do? Stick to my 1000kcals a day and suck up the hunger Return to the Protein shake diet which is really hard, but will give the best start to my surgery Don't worry about the pre-op diet until 7-10 days before my op I don't want an out, so I am not looking for all you nice people to say "Go for 3", I am looking to you guys that were or are in the same position to me to let me know what you did, why you did it and what motivated you. Thanks all. -
lol, thanks guys, to the OP, I didn't mean to hijack your thread with my surgeon's strict requirements! As to why wait for things like salads and nuts, I think they believe that a lot of people's stomachs will not be able to handle them until well out. For putting off longer than most things like fruits, veg, starchy veg, and grain-based food, they really want all of us to focus what little capacity we have in our new stomachs on protein. They especially don't want us wasting capacity/calories on things that are not as nutritionally important (for most of us) like potatoes or rice. And they want us to build these habits for life, so they make us do that for a long time. I'm good with all of this -- I think I'll do better with strict rules than I would with a more laissez-faire approach. And for a variety of reasons I think I'm destined to be a "slow loser" (although I dislike comparisons, this is not a race), so it's probably best for me to be really strict for a long time rather than open up the possibility of me starting to nosh on mashed potatoes or pasta or something.
