    What was your pre-op diet?

I just started mine yesterday. I was down .5 lbs this morning. I got my pre-op diet on Wednesday and was told to start as soon as I could get to the store. My surgery is June 26th so it'll be about 2.5 weeks on the diet. Meal 1 - 8oz skim or 1% milk with 1/2 scoop whey protein powder isolate and 4 oz fruit Meal 2- RTD protein shake or 8oz skim or 1% with whole scoop protein powder Meal 3- 6-8oz low fat, light yogurt (preferably Greek) with no fruit chunks <7g sugars and 4oz fruit or veggie Meal 4 - 1oz nuts or 2TBSP peanut butter or 1/2 c beans or hummus and 4oz fruit or veggie Meal 5 - 4 oz protein, 4 oz veggie with 1TBSP raw olive oil and 1/2 c whole grain starch or 1 slice whole grain bread or 1/2 potato Meal 6 (optional) - 8oz skim or 1% milk with 1/2scoop whey protein powder isolate and 4 oz fruit 3 Hours between each meal and drink 100oz of water or fluids So far not too bad. The hardest part is the 100oz of fluid. While I'm happy that there is some food on my plan, there's a convenience element to just shakes rather than measuring out a bunch of stuff and reading labels, but I guess the point is to get into the habit for after surgery. So the blender, scale, and 4oz containers are my new best friends. =)
  2. I lost 15 pounds after 2 weeks post-op and have been on a plateau during week 3 not losing 1 pound. Diet is non-fat cottage cheese and yogurt, egg beaters, mashed beans, sugar free jello/popsicles and premier protein drinks. Calorie range 600-800. What is going on? Any suggestions?
  3. Okay so here is the entire story here. I have posted in bits and pieces in replies to others. So I started my pre diet liquid only mind you. At three weeks prior to my June 13th surgery date. I have NASH or severe fatty liver or whatever they are calling it now a days 5/24th I started it. I did really good I was doing my liquid protein and broth, sf jello and popsicles and a cup of yogurt. Then on the 30th and 31st I fell off it because I had found out I couldn’t have broth nor yogurt. The surgeons office said the sodium in broth would not release the fat around the liver. And the yogurt was too much milk products since I’m using premier shakes. So that sat me back and it was a lot to lose I tried it and was so hungry I gave in and had a blue cheese burger at a restaurant on the 30th. Then my coworkers brought in my favorite pizza they thought it had not started yet so I had like 4 slices and doughnuts(2) a couple hours later. On June 1st I started again this time no broth or yogurt and it’s much harder. I made it through Friday, Saturday and Sunday then failed as the following this week starting on Monday Monday- 2 fried burgers with tons of cheese and on bread. Tuesday- large movie popcorn and butter Wednesday- small cheeseburger and beef with veggies Thursday- beef with veggies and chicken with veggies and cheese My dear hubby is freaking out about it and has me worried that I’m going to get to surgery and they will cancel it or open me up and cancel it. I started it at the weight of 311 or 314 and I’m now at 291 so I have lost some weight. So im just curious if I can follow the all liquid till surgery if I stand a chance of it happening any thoughts? Has anyone ever failed this badly this close and made it? or has anyone had surgery they went in and closed without doing it? Because they cheated. I know I did it to myself and well I own that fully. I couldn’t control my actions I will have to work on that a lot. But I’m torn as to if I should just call the surgeon office and tell them to cancel it because my liver is most likely not shrunken enough. If I do that I know he’s heading out a week after the 13th for three weeks and my insurance only approved the surgery window up till July 3rd or just be strict till the 13th and hope all is well. As well as doing a murelax bowel cleanse the day before. Oh how I wish I could have been stronger and not cheated

    I hate protein shakes

Get the unflavoured protein powder and put it in your regular drinks and soups, you can put it in anything you eat, yogurt, tea, whatever. Has NO taste but the protein is there. Have you tried that?

    June RNY buddies?

I have my pre-op appointment tomorrow and am not quite certain what all to ask. I stopped at the grocery store and purchased some goodies today on my way home for my pre-op diet. I start 10 days before surgery but am thinking about making it an even 2 weeks just to get in the groove. Skim Milk Lean Meat (allowed 3 oz. for lunch & dinner) Fat Free Ham Turkey Chicken 1% Cottage Cheese Fruit Premier Protein Shakes Dannon Lite & Fit Yogurt (6 oz. max per serving) sugar free popsicles sugar free Jello Dill Pickles Broth Celery Broccoli Cauliflower Cucumber Radishes 64 oz. of Water This is all going so fast. I had my first appointment with my surgeon on May 22nd and am scheduled for surgery on June 25th. Fast track for self-pay I guess. Yikes. Excited!

Need advice on getting enough food.

You had LapBand whereas I had Gastric Bypass so what I am saying may seem a little different but I think as far as nutrition post-op, it will be important and applicable. The three most important elements right after weight loss surgery are to meet your daily protein, fluid and vitamin requirements. Food is secondary because your body is converting your stored fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight. For me weight loss is achieved after surgery through meal volume control. I began with 2 ounces (1/4 cup) per meal and gradually over the next year and a half increase the volume to 1 cup per meal. With this minuscule amount of food, it is next to impossible to meet your protein daily requirements by food alone, so therefore I needed to rely on supplements such as protein shakes and protein bars. So since you are in the maintenance phase, the goals will change. The elements of protein, fluid and vitamins will still be important but rather than taking them as supplements, one can eat real food to supply those needs. According to my nutritionist, meals should consist of equal parts of protein, fats and carbs after the first couple years post-op. Always put protein first. Snacks should be limited to primarily whole food options: nuts, natural nut butters, fruits, veggies, boiled eggs, string cheese, yogurt with berries and almonds, tuna pouches. Avoid processed packaged foods as much as possible. In your case, you will need to assess your daily protein consumption. In general you should be consuming around 75-90 grams of protein daily. If you are under this amount, you will need to make up that difference by taking supplements such as protein shakes or protein bars. In my case I avoid sugar like the plague and try to limit some types of carbs (bread, rice, pasta) to one meal a day. Most veggies (greens) I do not constraints. It is just a matter of finding the veggies that appeal to you the most. Remember you can use fruits and veggies as snacks.

    Post op liquid diet

I got some gourmet soups from a local grocery store that makes them homemade. I put them in the blender with some unflavored protein powder and a bit of chicken stock if they need to be thinned out. I have that for lunch and dinner or thinned greek yogurt. For my liquids I rotate solid liquids (protein shakes) and clear liquids a cup for a cup kind of thing.
  8. So far (almost four months out), the only thing I've found that consistently gives me trouble is Mexican-style spices, even if it's super-mild (I don't like much spicy stuff anyway). My stomach has not liked that any time I've tried it. I get the slimes every time, even from just a bite or two. Otherwise, so far I haven't had problems, at least not consistently (and since it's not consistent, I'm more apt to think it's because I ate too fast or didn't chew well enough or something, rather than the food itself). I haven't tried soft/fluffy breads/biscuits/rolls yet (other than one tiny bite), but I've eaten toast and tortillas and such. I don't dump on natural sugars for the most part, as long as I don't consume "huge" amounts, so I don't drink a full serving of juice in one sitting (I'll either water it down or spread it out over a couple hours). I try to avoid added sugars over 5-10 grams, depending on the product (more lenient with yogurt than with some unhealthy treat, for example).
  9. Sorry. I used the 24 oz. Siggi's. With small portions it's lasted me a week and I still have 1/4 container left. Ty! Thats awesome! I never thought about using splenda in yogurt! This may be a game changer for me!

Recommendations for sugar free treats please

Thank you! Can you tell me how much yogurt you used? Sorry. I used the 24 oz. Siggi's. With small portions it's lasted me a week and I still have 1/4 container left.

    June RNY buddies?

I'm June 26th. Started my pre-op diet today. While I'm sure there will be many times I'll be happy I can have some foods... fruits, veggies, lean meat, 1/2 potato, yogurt... prepping is a pain in the butt. There might be something to be said for the convenience of just grabbing a shake and going.

I like to add cottage cheese or Greek yogurt to sf jello. IMO it kills the afternoon taste and adds protein at the same time.
  14. Hi friends! My name is Jacqui, and I had surgery on 3/14/18. I was doing well with my vitamins until surgery. Now they make me terribly sick, sometimes to the point of throwing up. My doctor says to take them with yogurt, like crush them up in it, but I can't eat enough yogurt to get the whole multivitamin and I'm still sick afterward. Does anyone have experience with these? Or an alternative vitamin regimen? I would like to keep these ideally as they are the ones covered by my insurance. For reference, I take two multi in the morning, two calcium around 10 am, two more calcium around 4:30 pm and Iron around 7 or 8. The multi and the iron are the worst.
  15. See, I still try all sorts of spices, just only when I'm home "Just in case" The condiments are specifically listed as for WLS, but they are low cal, low/no sugar, low/no carb, etc options. Just following the nutritional guidelines etc. The yogurt dressings I find with the other health food veggies in the market. The natural honey sweetened ketchup is by Heinz... etc etc. Just label surfing for the best options.
  16. I wouldn't say I cook blandly, but since the surgery I'm not as adventurous with flavors as I used to be. I used to like spicy things and now I steer clear. Probably because I had something early on that was so spicy it made me start coughing and I felt desperate for a drink. I haven't wanted to repeat this. I don't buy specific WLS condiments, but I do measure. I also look at the labels and buy mostly natural ingredients and yogurt based salad dressings.
  17. We were told that Sauces were our friends for dry meats. LIke, my nutritionists advise it LOL. I use yogurt dressings, balsamics, or some naturally sweetened with honey ketchup, much smaller amounts that pre-op though.

    Non-liquid Pre-op diet?

I just got my pre-op diet yesterday and was told to start it as soon as I could get to the store. My surgery is on June 26th so that will be roughly 2.5 weeks. My diet is not just liquids either. I have 6 meals/snacks. All but 1 include either fruit or veggie. 1 includes yogurt. 1 includes nuts, peanut butter, beans or hummus. 1 includes meat, veggie, and whole grain starch or 1/2 potato. I'm hoping it won't be too bad. The only real issue is a trip to Disney for the weekend between now and surgery. Don't quite know how that's going to work.

    Post op liquid diet

Are they letting you do full liquid or still just clear liquids? I am on day 8 too but i can do full liquid so i can do protein shakes. I have found savior in putting Greek yogurt in a blender with a popsicle and making it super thin. It hasn’t upset me yet so I’m calling it a win.

    Lactose intolerance?

Thanks Jess. I'm not even sure if it is lactose intolerance. I was sleeved 5 weeks ago and when I wake up I feel good. I find that even water will cause a gas bubble to form and the burping begins. And I'm not aware of swallowing any air. I'm staying away from all dairy to see if it helps but so far I haven't noticed a difference. Only been two days. My gastroenterologist said it could be GERD and has me taking two PPI's a day. I've been doing that for two weeks though and I can say some days are better than others. When it's bad, it's bad. Whatever it is! I can't figure out what's different on the "bad" days as I've pretty much been eating the same things. If they' were bothering me, why would I ever have a "good" day? So I'm eliminating dairy first. I'm concerned about getting enough enough protein each day without the whey protein or the Greek Yogurt. I just can't eat enough meat, fish or eggs. My gastroenterologist did tell me when I'm having a bad day I can add Gaviscon which I can tell you really helps. For that reason, I'm thinking it's more about the GERD. I don't understand how that causes so much excess gas and bloating though? I know it's all trial and error, I'm just afraid I'm not ingesting enough because on the bad days I barely eat or drink anything for fear of making it worse. Hopefully I'll figure it out soon. Thanks for your thoughts, I appreciate it.

    Lactose intolerance?

Many people do develop issues with dairy/whey/lactose post op...as well as aversions and intolerances of other kinds. Most of the time they dissipate by six months out or so. I couldn't eat eggs for months. I had issues with some dairy for several weeks. Your stomach (and intestines depending on the type of surgery) have been cut open. They won't be performing optimally for a while. BUT if you have issues with whey protein it's not a lactose intolerance. It's a different issue. I was just clarifying that issue. So you might have issues with whey protein or you might have issues with yogurt, but you might not have issues with both. So eliminate one and see if the other still bothers you. Then try switching.

  23. Follow the rules/guidelines. I see so many posts on forums & social media where people try to advance themselves with food, try to go back to work early, lift things heavier than brute suppose to etc. All sorts of things that are out of their guidelines. I am on a Facebook group for WLS (connected with the insurance/hospital I am associated with) & people are eating mashed potato, yogurts, pudding & creamed soups when that stuff isn’t allowed on our program and they know but say, “oh but it went down fine.” Of course it did, it’s a slider food. People fail to realize that they just had major surgery & just because you feel “okay”, doesn’t mean you can start doing whatever it is you want. That’s kind of how we got fat in the first place. This is a time to start anew, a fresh start, so follow the guidelines.
  24. I made potato and broccoli soup and tomato basil. I stirred Greek yogurt into both to increase the protein. I plan on making split pea and lentil soup.
  25. Usually tea or coffee with protein shake then cottage cheese or yogurt with fruit for breakfast Lunch is salad with protein like chicken or fish
