    Decision Time - GERD relief?

Can you have both the fundoplication and the Bypass together? My PCP mentioned this as an option
  2. I cannot even describe how amazing I feel now. I am 6 days post op and it feels like I just did a bunch of stomach work outs. The gas pains are really subsiding and the bloating is down a ton. I have lost 14lbs in 6 freaking days!!! Protein shakes, vitamins, and water. That's my method! Lol. People are even starting to comment on my face and belly shrinkage! I LOVE IT! You guys are in for a great time!
  3. I took clothes to the hospital and my Kindle to read. I didn't need anything else at the hospital, and my hospital provided the belly pillow, which was awesome immediately after the operation. Some of the things you mention, I eventually bought but I didn't need them right away. Body pillow (for sleeping) -- no, I never used one. Tummy pillow (for support after surgery) -- hospital provided one. Mug warmer -- haven't used one. If my coffee gets cold, I don't want it anymore. 4oz Containers -- I eventually bought very small dishes, but I didn't need them for a while. Appetizer spoons/forks -- No. I use regular sized silverware. Blender bottles -- I have one, and I used it frequently at first. I rarely use it now, and I don't need more than one. Water bottles -- I love the refillable Water bottles. I have several, but I tend to use my favorite one. Anti-itch cream (incision sights) -- I didn't need this. Mederma cream (scars) -- I didn't use this, and my scars look fine/faded. Anti-bac soap -- I think I had to have this for the night before surgery. Bento-style lunch kit -- I have one. I rarely use it. Wet wipes -- I have these, but it has nothing to do with surgery. GasX Strips -- No, I didn't use them, but I know a lot of people swear by them. Liquid Tylenol -- No, I didn't use it. Food scale -- I bought one eventually. It was when I started eating normal foods because it made it easier for me to figure out how much I was eating. I didn't need it when I was eating prepackaged stuff (protein bars and Protein shakes). Mini plates -- I use the salad-size plate that came with my set of dishes. I didn't need to buy special ones. Protein powders galore -- Don't invest in large containers until you know you like it. Vitamin organizer -- No. I took a multi Vitamin, Biotin and Iron, and I just kept them in their original bottles. Exercise bands (stretchy ones) -- I have one, but I rarely use it. Fitbit tracker -- I have a watch that will tell me the calories I burn, but I don't have a fitbit, and I am two years out. I don't need that much information. What I did buy eventually for working out -- an exercise ball, hand weights (2 and 5 pounds), and exercise DVDs that I can use at home. Personally, I like Zumba and Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred. My next investment will be kettle balls. I highly recommend that you not buy a bunch of stuff initially because you don't know what you will like/want/use. It doesn't all have to be there right away.

    liquid trial

I am not required to do a pre-op diet except the day before surgery. HOWEVER, I have been doing 2 Protein shakes and 1 small meal to help prepare for the after math of surgery. Store bough broth's are really not all that great to me. So I have made turkey and chicken broth myself and I have the ability to feel like the flavor is satisfying. On Monday, I will cut out the small meal and just do the liquid part. So far, after doing this for 4 days, I am already down 5 pounds. I helps me keep motivation when I check the scale . Best of luck to you whatever road you choose to take.

    No Restriction!?!?!

Questions? How much are you eating at meals and how much? How long do you stay satisfied between meals? How much protein are you eating at each meal? Are you doing any shakes for added protein? The band is not about restriction, if you are expecting the band to tell you when to stop eating you are going to be very disappointed in how the band works. The purpose of the band is to help you stay satisfied between meals. The reason they preach to us to eat slowly and stop eating at 20 minutes is for this reason. That is the amount of time it takes the brain to trigger your gut that it has been fed. The other point I want to make is that if the band is to tight,(like you had before) you will become dehydrated, you will have more PB episodes and nutritionally it is not good for you. A lot of bandster get caught up in wanting the band to be tight so they eat less, if you get on this merry go round it is hard to get off. Sadly the band only work if you eat less and exercise more and a lot of the work about 95% has to come from you. If you can increase your protein and maybe add a supplement between meals to help curb your appetite it may help. i speak from experience and success, the band does work but you have to do a lot of work to make the band work.

    January 2014 Sleevers

Hi! I had my sleeve done on January 21, 2014. I really havent had any problems, except I seem to be tired all the time. I am on the pureed stage of the food. I hate it, lol. It pretty hard to get all the protein in, I keep thinking that part of it will get better. I went out before the surgery and got all the things I was supposed to get. Now, just the smell of the Whey Protein and I gag. Are you having that same problem? I drink alot of water, and I was never a water drinker before this. I try to walk at least 30 minutes a day, some days I am only getting in 20 but its better than nothing. Your right about the head hunger thing. My head tells me I am hungry but my stomach says, You put something in me and I will puke it out, lol. I would do this again in a heartbeat but its not easy all the time.
  7. I had a lap band 3 years ago I lost a total of 74 pounds but everything came to a halt when I started getting bad acid reflex to the point of not being able to sleep because I would wake up with acid in my mouth and me chocking . I went to the doctor he ordered a scope threw my mouth that showed that my Lap band had slipped he said I have to fix it , remove it , or u can opt to get the sleeve . I decided the sleeve it would remove a foreign object and give me the same effect as the lap band . So here I am with the sleeve and having a hard time knowing which Protein powders to get and what Vitamins are good :/ .

Hurts When I Eat? at 5 weeks.

@@TexasGirl86 Well to be honest, your dinner sounds delicious as I sip my Protein shake. I'm told that bread, rice and Pasta are not comfortable for many people as they can be "sticky". Beef is also difficult for some people. I haven't tried any of the 3 starches yet and they are specifically called out as something to avoid on my program. If you're in tremendous pain, you shouldn't hesitate to call your Dr. Some people have luck walking these things off. Me, I tend to worry about everything.

    Protein Shakes

It all depends...I am not big on adding fruits in my shakes cause for me the Protein shakes are sweet enough. Also what you want to be careful of is the sugar in the fruit. You dont want to add a lot of sugar cause its carbs and that can slow down the weight loss. So my best advice would be to try to stay away from fruit at least early on. I do eat blueberries and cherries time to time. I barely eat apples or oranges (they are hard to digest and I am 4 months out), I do eat bananas once in a while and at times I might add them to my shake to add more flavor. Pineapple, grapes, mango and even bananas are high in sugar. Here are some interesting articles that tell you more about fruits... http://www.shape.com/healthy-eating/diet-tips/sugar-wise-how-fruit-stacks http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/07/31/making-the-case-for-eating-fruit/?_php=true&_type=blogs&_r=0 http://lowcarbdiets.about.com/od/whattoeat/a/whatfruit.htm
  11. I feel so bad that so many good choices are not available to you. The only thing I've eaten that you haven't ruled out is Beans. Soft beans pureed or refried beans (low fat) have quite a bit of Protein in them. You will definitely have to eat more than three times a day to get your protein in. Good luck!
  12. Once I was given the ok to try salads (for me it was 6 weeks out), I found out quickly that regular lettuce (iceberg/romaine) didn't sit very well with me. Since I have a spinach allergy, I have been relying on kale for my salad fixes. I don't love the flavor of raw kale, but like you, I was craving salads! I know this journey is different for everyone, but if the "normal" salads you're used to don't go/stay down well at first, some other options just might work!
  13. I had my RNY surgery on May 4th, 2004 to be exact. Like everyone on this site, my weight had been an issue for many, many years and this surgery seemed to be the only option I had left. In fact, a close friend of mine had the surgery before me and it was due to her positive experiences that I began looking into it. Ironically, at the time time I began investigating this surgery, my mother was a nurse working in bariatrics, working for the doctor I would later have the surgery from. I will be the first to tell you, that choosing surgery is a very personal choice. I do not think it is for everyone and feel one should look at all options before choosing surgery. I have not always been open in talking about it, as I was fearful of others negative comments and even more so, my own fear of failing. What if the surgery did not produced the results I want? Before deciding on her surgery, I will admit I was just completely lost. I hated what I looked like and felt just completely out of touch with my inner self as compared to my outer appearance. I would lie to my friends and family about my work schedule simply to miss having anyone see me. I would often times avoid phone calls so that I could not be available. As with any family, I had major issues with facing certain people because it was never good...or made me feel worse. I have a number of family members who never suffered with weight issues....my brother for example has always looked great....my mother and aunt always looked great....my grandparents too. There were people in my family who tried to diet with me, or point out every food item I was eating, saying, "that is your third dinner roll" or, "do you know how many calories are in that?". It was just one comment after another. I was ashamed of what I looked liked, and angry/jealous of others who were skinny or seemed to have no weight issues. Being overweight, simply sucks! Being the fat girl, the one with the great hair and funny personality Sucks! I was sick and tired of being the third wheel, the girl who had a lot of male "friends", or the one who was just a great person to talk to. I had enough! I wanted to change. When you are heavy, there are common comments you tend to hear day in and day out. Some are self generated, while others are said directly.....of course, those comments become our daily motto (at least for me they did). Instead of, you are so beautiful....I would be told "I love your hair", "you are just big boned", "you have your dads figure" (by the way not a compliment...love my dad, but really!". The comments people make are really unbelievable. Ok so I finally decide on surgery. I was approximately 220 pounds before surgery. At this point, I was told by some in a support group I was not heavy enough to have the surgery! Such a crazy response to make in a Support Group session. I stayed 5 days in the hospital....and my weight loss process began. The first year after surgery had its moments. I cannot say it was always easy. Yes, the weight came off....incredibly fast. I was so happy with the results. Eating, that was different and often times a big struggle. I had a very hard time keeping food down...and finding food I was able to tolerate. Overtime, this improved. So much so, that I no longer suffer from the same restrictions as I did in the beginning. I think this was something to expect, but am now facing some realities I truly did not think about as the beginning stages of my weight loss were so successful. My lowest weight was 124 pounds, but that only lasted for half of the day. My stable weight stayed between 132-140. After approximately 3 years after surgery I began gaining weight. Each year there after seemed to be more and more difficult. I remember weighing 138 pounds and visiting my grandfather. Spent a long day with him, only to have him tell me at the end of our visit that I was getting fat! Truth be told, I was gaining weight, I just hated hearing that I was fat! After all, I had a surgery to help with my weight. At approximately 5 years after surgery, I weighed 150. Not a horrible weight, but something definitely needed to change. So, I started running. And got into swimming again...and eventually took up triathlons. I completed 5k's, 10k's, sprint triathlons, half marathons, a swim around the florida keys, half iron-man...the list goes on. I just readjusted my life. Well now, 10 years out from my surgery, I am at an overwhelming weight of 172! I am getting back to the basics....And trying to get back on track. I have joined this site for additional support and to find others just like me. I knew I would gain some weight back, I just never expected to get to where I am now. Yes, I have taken the liberty to eat the wrong foods, to eat too much, to snack...and just simply stop doing what I am suppose to do. I have allowed outside stress and daily life stuff get in the way of my past successes. I am now focusing on me, and what I need to do to get healthy! I want to lose this weight and am determined to be successful. **quick advice for anyone in the beginning stages or ones noticing a weight gain..... Weight loss is not magic, the surgery only works as successfully as You follow it! Be mindful of what you eat, and never take it for granted that it will be the solution you are seeking. I am learning this and am taking full accountability for where I am now. Sorry for such a long post....but thanks for letting me share....

    Portion control

If you don't have restriction yet, my .02 is that you don't set yourself up for failure through hunger by cutting your food to 1/2 cup per meal. Again, just my .02. I'll usually start my morning with either a low carb Protein shake made with skim milk and half a banana. Sometimes I'll have an egg and slice of bacon with the top half of an English muffin, although I was just filled again this past Thursday and I only made it through the egg and bacon this morning. Then 2.5 hours after Breakfast, I'll drink a low carb, low cal Protein Shake (about 110 calories and 2 carbs). 2.5 hours after that I have lunch which is usually about 2-3 oz of protein and 1/2-1 c. of steamed vegies (broccoli, cauliflower, green Beans, brussel sprouts, etc.) or I'll have 3 oz of tuna or chopped cooked chicken mixed with celery, onion and just enough mayo to moisten it a bit over about 1 cup of chopped lettuce or 3 oz of grilled chicken in a tossed salad with a homemade vinagrette (olive oil, wine vinegar, garlic, thyme, mustard). 2.5 hours after lunch I'll do another low carb, low cal protein shake. 2.5 hours after that I'll have dinner which is about 3-5 oz of protein, 1/2-1 cup of steamed vegies and 1/4-1/2 cup of carbs (potatoes, rice, Pasta, bread, etc.) 2.5 hours after that I'll have another protein shake. In between I drink my Water. I'm never hungry and I never crave. Mainly because I'm not eating a lot of carbs and I'm putting protein in my system every 3 hours. I put 1/4- 1/2 or 1/2-1 cup as a range because some days I'm tighter than others. For example, yesterday (a day after my last fill), I only had a bacon and egg for breakfast, my normal Protein shakes through the day, a few pieces of shrimp with steamed vegies for lunch and 4 chicken wings for dinner. I don't mean 4 whole wings. I cut the wing tips off and then split the drummie from the other part. I ate 4 of the pieces that have the two bones in them (don't know what you call them). After eating the 4 wings, and we know how little is on them, I just didn't have room for anything more. .

    Port through skin

I can feel my port but not quite see it right now. I had a band revision a few weeks ago and was told not to move it but was given the option free of charge since I was being opened up. I decided to skip it. I am terrified of a port infection and had to have my flipped port reanchored a few months after my surgery. If it bothers you I would look into it otherwise as my doc said there is no telling how the port will look in the new place.
  17. Hello everyone. I am having trouble finding food to eat. Since I have been on puréed this week I have been eating puréed pinto Beans and I can only get in about 40 teaspoons. I am sick of Protein shakes in the morning. Any good puréed recipes? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Emotions

@@L.Harmony - I totally agree with @@Yaberhoo - you need to breathe, and breathe deep. Contact your doctors office and see about taking an OTC for sleep, Melatonin or Tylenol PM? You had surgery about 5 weeks ago - did your doctor tell you that you would lose ___lbs by this date ____? I doubt it. We all lose at different rates. Stay focused on hydrating and Protein and get your sleep cycle closer to normal. Keep a bottle of Water with you at ALL times, sip. Set a timer/clock/cell phone to alarm every two hours and check your water intake to keep you hydrated. Eat protein FIRST. You work in corrections, according to your profile, so I don't know if your schedule is rotated. Lack of sleep, plus the hormone flush, we go thru early out can make you feel really "pissy" or overwhelmed <breathe>.
  19. so tomorrow i start my three week liver reduction diet. as per my surgeon it's 2 protein shakes (one for breakfast, one for dinner) and a lunch consisting of lean meat and non-starchy vegetables. I know myself, and I'm probably going to either get sick of the veggies and meat or won't have enough time to prepare it and want a protein shake. do you think it would be okay to either drink 3 protein shakes instead, or put the meal as dinner? i'm going to my nut on monday and i'll ask, but until then i wanted to know what you guys thought? or should i strictly follow what she said?
  20. In my job, drinking Breakfast and lunch is a great option for me. I am going to go the Protein shot route. Some type of fruit flavor, I am sick of chocolate or vanilla diet drinks. My instructions permit "protein shots" in propel (I guess that is water). Any suggestions on shot brands. I mean do you just drop them in there like a flaming Dr. Pepper, lol? It's hot and I want something that can be downed cold and quickly. I also can't lose a ton of weight they said. 7-10 pounds. Yet, they also said that I wouldn't be judged on my pre-op weight. HELP on both accounts plz, but mainly on the protein shots, there are a ton online, even a grape one by sunkist called sunkist grape 4200.

    Soft Phase

Any type of ground meat - I have made some lean hamburger stroganoff, chili, ground turkey patties. Any shredded meats - chicken w/salsa in the crock pot, canned shredded chicken w/a little turkey pepperoni, pizza sauce and ff mozzarella, chicken salad. Any soft fish - Tilapia w/ steamed veggies, tuna salad. Other Protein sources - made weight watchers cabbage 0 point Soup but added cannellini Beans for protein, egg salad, scrambled eggs. Any mushy vegetables - steamed a mix of veggies (zucchini, tomato, green beans, etc) in a little light olive oil/garlic/onion. I think in the soft phase there are a lot of recipes you can alter just a little, like changing the type of meat that can make it fine to eat. I still have my Protein shakes for Breakfast, string cheese, Isopure, and other high protein things for Snacks.
  22. You have to get in your protein and your fluids - if you don't you will get dehydrated and that is not a good thing. Try sucking on SF popsicles - crystal light are really good ones. I also constantly suck on ice cubes when I am not drinking - they melt in my mouth and trickle down my throat, so I don't have the pain. You can also try drinking warm SF jello that hasn't set-up yet. If you have unflavored protein, mix it in everything you put in your mouth if possible - that will help get your protein up - I didn't worry about getting in all of my protein while I was on liquids or mushies; I did the best I could and got in as much fluids as I could - that was the main goal - to stay hydrated. Just keep liquid right by you at work if possible and sip, sip, sip ... I promise, it will get better!!!
  23. Megan - I can't recall exactly how long it takes for the swelling to go down; however, it does and drinking should get easier. You might find that it's easier and less painful to drink warm liquids - even if it's warm water -- I still cannot drink anything super cold first thing in the morning - I stick with everything warm. Also, when I take medication before going to bed, I take it with warm water too. Did you have a hiatal hernia repaired during your surgery? If so, it may take you a little longer for the swelling to go down. Experiment with warm liquids, broths, etc. and see if they are easier for you to tolerate - you can add unflavored protein powder to them for increased protein and energy.

    1 full week post op

Congrats on one week! Hang in there... If you are getting enough protein, then the hunger might just be mental. Good to keep the shakes going. Keep active! I find responding to other people posts during the "mental battle" periods helps me refocus my thoughts.
