  1. I was in group session at my bariatric surgeons office and one of the fellow rny bypassers stated she can feel her remnant stomach...can even burp it. I've never even thought about my other stomach thats floating around still. It kinda blew my mind. So i was wondering if anyone else feels it.

    Any WLS book recommendations?

These were recommended to me by my therapist and nutritionist: Mindless Eating. Why We Eat More Than We Think by Brian Wansink, PhD The Emotional First Aid Kit. A Practical Guide to Life After Bariatric Surgery by Cynthia L. Alexander PsyD (this is the only one that I've read) WLS for Dummies

    Psych appointment

Since mine was part of the bariatric team my insurance covered it. I saw her during one of my 3 follow up appointments. The only thing my insurance didn't cover was the nutrition class. That was $200

    Start of new journey

Wee update..... Lower body lift done 09.01.10 - unbelievably sore, worse pain ever, but would do it again!!! (had vacation in Florida 6 wks after surgery - flying from Scotland - 9hr flight - did theme parks, wore bikini, felt fabulous!) 7lbs of loose skin gone 14cm at front 10cm at sides, 2cm on back. Band slipped 03.17.11 - no pain but couldn't eat or drink for 4 days. was awful..... Went to operating theatre that night, and band was put back into place. Have gained 25lbs in 2 months.... not happy...... Bariatric Team told me a patient put on 14lbs in 10 days so don't worry about my 25lbs......!!!! Band now has 3mls in it..... another fill tomorrow....... I REALLY need restriction. This extra weight is annoying the hell outta me..... although everyone says I look better, healthier etc. I admit I feel better, permanent heartburn is now gone....no night reflux.....feeling permanently cold is gone and DH prefers me like this! Gonna get rid of this 25lbs over the next 6 months.... BTW Brachioplasty hopefully in the next 6 weeks..... yay! Sadie

    Sleeve surgery instructions

Sure. Here's my diet progression: Stage 1: Bariatric Full Liquid Diet (Weeks 1-2) #1 Sugar-Free Fluids This is the number one priority after surgery—drink a minimum of 64 ounces/day. Examples: Water, herbal tea (no caffeine), Crystal Light, PowerAde Zero, etc. Liquids should be non-carbonated, non-caffeinated, and under 15 calories/8 ounces #2 Protein Shakes Goal of 60g-80g protein/day. Mix with water or unsweetened nut milk. Stage 2: Soft Protein Foods (Weeks 3-4) #1 Sugar-Free Fluids Still the number one priority after surgery #2 Food 3 meals/day of soft protein foods (aim for 60g of protein as able—compensate with protein shakes if unable to hit 60g through food). There is no set portion size—you must listen to your body. Examples of soft foods: eggs, whole beans, canned meat, shaved/thinly sliced deli meats, fish, tofu, Greek yogurt, cheese, refried beans, etc. #3 Protein Shakes You may need to drink 1 protein shake/day to meet the 60g of protein if you can't meet this goal from foods. Stage 3: Bariatric Regular Foods (Week 5+) #1 Sugar-Free Fluids Still the number one priority after surgery #2 Food 3 meals/day focusing on protein. Small bites and stop at the first indication of fullness. There is no set portion size. Try new foods one at a time and in small amounts. Focus on solid protein for best portion and hunger control. Put fork down and pause between bites.

Recipes that are next on my list!

I just bought wonton wrappers at the store like two hours ago because I keep seeing so many bariatric-friendly recipes using them. Tonight, though, I'm making crustless ham/pineapple pizzas with roasted broccoli/cauliflower/carrots. Both are in the oven right now. https://www.ellaclaireinspired.com/no-crust-pizza-bites/
  8. You can always seek out a bariatric therapist and a nutritionist on your own and see them as needed. Of course you will have to pay but at least you know that is an option.

    Ladies! Menstruation

Ladies, don't forget that since it does mess up our hormones we tend towards super fertility...so take EXTRA precautions for at least the 1st year after surgery...tons of women get pregnant in the 1st year after bariatric surgery

    Am I Being Impatient?

What kind of insurance do you have? I had to follow a six month diet of logging and turning in every thing I ate, the psych eval, sitting in weight loss surgery classes, going to group meetings, etc. I had all the testings done, sleep studies (once a year), EKG's, Stress tests at my cardiologist, colonoscopy's, endoscopies, and six months of meetings with their bariatric specialist, nutritionist, etc. and my second meeting with surgeon on April 18th. I was told they would fax everything by the end of the week. I called BCBSIL yesterday and they said it's in with medical review and now, I'm feeling exactly like you, concerned, impatient and stressed. I will probably check in with the insurance company on Monday, though I should probably wait until Tuesday. good luck.
  11. I had a Midband implanted by Dr. Dineros at St. Luke's hospital in Manila, Philipines. I found the entire experience to be fantastic. I was in a famous U.S. hospital last year and did not get the treatment I got in Manila. My U.S. insurance company paid for everything but the plane fair and $600.00 US. My room had a TV, VCR, FAX, Refridgerator, Microwave, Computer with highspeed internet, cable, living room, it was great. The doctor is U.S and French trained. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and member of the American Bariatric Society. He has a full team including nutritionist, endochronologist, pulunary, psych,, and specialy trained aethesiologist. The whole thing was just top notch. I would highly recomend this option to anyone considering possibly going off shore or prefers the Midband. He also visits the U.S. every month or so.

    5 days after surgery

I’m 3 days post op and their goals for me are 64 oz of water/ fluids (shakes count) and 60 to 80g of protein. I’m getting closer on protein than water. My friend used to work as a nut in bariatric dept I was sleeved and she said it’s normal not to reach these goals in the first week and not to be too worried about dehydration bc it would be for those woh can’t keep anything down and at that point would recommend Gatorade. I’m in the 50s for protein and 26 for water.
  13. I know they are fabulous but this isn’t a thread about whether I should buy one or not. The question is how well do bariatric patients do with eating food from an Air Fryer? What’s your experience? Every non-bariatric person I know loves theirs. But I’ve seen several articles lately discussing how the end product is not good for those that have had WLS as the food isn’t as tender or smooth as it should be. Most articles referred to items with crunchy outsides. So, thoughts?
  14. Hi I'm a fellow Canadian who just was sleeved June 16, in Tijuana with the help of the great folks at Bariatric Pals. I'm making the trip home today and feeling great.

  17. @@Anniel2015 I did have Dr. Valenzuala. Although I only talked to her for a few minutes, she seemed nice, but more important I seem to be doing good. My experience with the Mi hospital and the Mexico Bariatric Centre was terrible. First, just watched my pajama pants 3 times as the black on the bottom from the filthy floor. I found the driver to the coordinator heret was sketchy. I have travelled enough to know that Tijuana is shady to begin with but they take you to a few stores in a shopping location and only let you buy from their "friends"...we went on our own but it is a good way to walk. Hyatt was ok, no one spoke English, rooms were nice, popsicles were just ice Water on a coffee stir stick. My nursing care was bad. But yet I hear rave reviews and that confuses me. Its not a hospital, its a very very small clinic with construction going on and really no hall ways to walk through post op. I was inventive and just went from one floor to the next...not what the brochure says. They gave me morphine, which I cant handle and I told the "nurse"t understand me and gave it to me any way. MY IV wasn't working most of the time, so keep an eye on it. I had blood all over my bed and they never changed it from them attempting to get the IV in my left hand. I demanded the them to try the right hand as my left one was size of football. Now this is just my opinion, a few ladies at the same time had minor issues but were satisfied with the MI hospital. There is another doctor who spoke English and he was good, he checked up a lot and if it wasn't for him I probably would be more upset. We left a day early to get the F out of Tijuana ( hate it) but 8 days out I have to think of the operation itself......and it was good.
  18. I agree with Mikeyy. This is a big deal having bariatric surgery and you should be 100% confident in your surgeon. Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Myocardial Infarction

I would do things slightly differently although my friend DanaC84.did not give bad advice. Was your EKG/ECG done through your bariatric clinic or hospital or did a cardiologist do it? If it was not done through a cardiologist, I would consult one. Explain to them you are seeking Bariatric Surgery and this has come up, that you are wondering if this will bar you from your surgery? You may have to go through heart ultrasounds, not bad , I had one myself 2 days ago, maybe even a cardiac catheterzation, not as much fun, but I have had 2 full ones. This is your life and future we are talking about, and , Darlin', you are well-worth it. And then I would also speak to my surgeon, if I were you. If you are curious where I am giving this advice from, I will explain. I had my surgery , an RNY, a little less than 8 months ago. Because I have many 1st and 2nd degree relatives with cardiac issues and also because of my AGE (73) I had to go through more extensive testing before clearance. But I got it from Dr Karve, my cardiologist as well as all the others I had to see. In January it was time for my yearly, she asked if she might send me for a MRI, there was a blip on the radar, you might say. When I got paperwork to fill out from the consulting hospital, she's in a different healthcare system than my bariatrics, there in black and white was the reason she was sending me. She had not spoke of this, nary a clue . To Rule out expansion of Thoracic Aortic Aneurysm, OMG I had no idea! It is even more frightening, my Middle child who was also my oldest son, died suddenly at 31, he also had an Aortic aneurysm, his was in the Ascending Arch, very much closer to the ❤but it exploded and he was dead in the blink of an eye. Took a long time for my late husband , myself and indeed all that knew and loved my Kevin. It was our belief that it was just a freak happening, now with my diagnosis, it is more likely it had a genetic basis. Me, a mother who loved and would given her own life up to save him, may have instead been the instrument of his death. Talk about a never- ceasing Guilt Trip.Well my MRI shows at this time, mine is stable, if you have to have one, mine is the better of the 2 kinds, a fusiform , a uniform widening,if it had been saccular, like berries on the side, they rupture quicker so I would have had open surgery by now since I live 50 miles away from my specialists. Now as to why the latest ❤ultrasound , I have a murmur, it was being watched by my PCP and me, we thought not that uncommon. Well as part of my healing from surgery, I have frequent endoscopies, my pouch developed a stricture, and I have healing ulcers in my jejunem, the part of small intestine my pouch , the Ms Precious Pouch, so named because I fought a 3 year uphill battle to even receive her, attaches to. Well the anesthesiologist assisting had a tantrum fit, well that's what it seemed like, over degree that she was picking up with her stethoscope. Finally allowed the endoscopy to proceed but this time she was there to monitor and faxed my PCP before I could tell him at my next appointment. So that was Wednesday, praying it is either simple aging or a minor functional one, not a valve defect. Along with the other congenital problems, Kevin had an Aortic valve with 2 not 3 leaflets, hopefully I didn't give that to him as well. Funny that of my whole family he always seemed the healthiest, but I guess You Can't Always Tell. So you can understand my cautionary tale, but Bueno702, I am praying yours works out perfect and you do get your surgery. I will never, even with the bumps I've had along the way, regret having mine. At my heaviest I was 365+ unhappy pounds, now I am 224, hoping in a few months to break the barriers and be in Onederland, when I broke 300 I was so happy but it won't compare to writing my weight with a 1 in front!
  20. Curious what insurance do you have? Mine wont cover any bariatric surgery so i am paying almost $20K out of pocket. as for the eval thanks for the link. I will contact them. I have tried other locations for the eval but my surgeons office is extremely strict and have rejected every single other one i have tried to get it thru.
  21. I stayed in a horrible marriage subjected to isolation and humiliation for ten years becuase I did not want to fail at a second marriage. It nearly cost me my life when he mistook me for a pinching bag and threatened to kill me. (He kept five loaded guns in the house). Never again will I let the fear of failure keep me from acting in my own best interest. The only thing you need to worry about is failing to take control over your health, happiness, and future. Do what you have to do to get healthy. Bariatric surgery has been a life saver for so many of us.
  22. I've been doing to the docs since July 24 (first appointment was made in June, but, as we all know, it's a waiting game). I have my endo (re)scheduled to 10/3 (the first facility didn't take my insurance 😠) and my pre-op with my primary on 9/30. My surgery is set (as along as all tests are good), for 10/28/19. I've lost 36 plus pounds on my own. I watch everything that goes into my mouth and I exercise. I also obsessively go on this site and facebook grounds about bariatric surgery and watch my 600-lb life when I'm not feeling motivated enough (I will tend to go for a nice, long walk after seeing their struggles). I read stuff every day. I feel like I'm obsessed! The date seems so far, yet so close. What is everyone else doing to prepare for the big day?
  23. Hi Helen! Sorry it took me so long to reply...been so busy! ALO Bariatrics and Dr. Lopez is AMAZING! The hospital in Puerto Vallarta is San Javier, and it is pristeen. You even get a private suite and shower, etc. The room has a sofa if your partner wants to stay with you. We were picked up by Dr. Leo at the airport, and he takes you to the Paradise Village Resort & Spa (it's part of the package) and paradise is right! It's right on the beach. Everything you need is on the resort. The morning of the surgery, Leo picked me up in the lobby and took me to the hospital (it's literally a 5 min drive) and I registered. My surgery was at 1:00 pm, he picked me up st 11:00 for pre/op (bloodwork, EKG, IV). They (nurses) come to your room to do this. They then wrap your legs in compression bandages. A resident comes in for your medical history (medications, previous surgeries, etc). Then you are wheeled down to the OR. You will meet Dr. Lopez and the anesthesologist (who is very funny and handsome..so is Dr. Lopez...wow!) Different peeps will ask you sbout your medications, I was sick of it lol. Then you are wheeled into the OR, scoot onto the gurney, he tells u when he's sedating you, and BOOM..you're in recovery. They gave me a shot of morphine, and I felt no pain at all. They will give you analgesics and antibiotics at regular intervals thru your IV the whole duration of your stay. You will spend the night, and in the morning, you go down to radiology for your leak test by CT scan. Both Dr. Lopez snd the anesthesiologist are there with you (I am assuming it's because if there is a leak, you have to go back into surgery immediately). You drink 2 separate gulps of a clear, bitter liquid and you get to watch it on a large screen. Pretty cool! Once you get the all clear, you can drink clear liquids. Discharged at 4:00 pm, Dr Leo takes you back to the resort. Anakaren (nutritionist) will come and see you before discharge to give you Meds and instructions. We enjoyed walking, lying on the beach, etc. We stayed an extra day. Oh yeah, u will have a drain. Dr. Leo will come to your hotel room and remove it. He picks u up at the hotel, and takes u yo the airport to fly home. Very impressive and seamless! I feel FANTASTIC!! No nausea, nothing. Go for it!
  24. I'm in the pre-op stage of being SLEEVED. I've been BANDED twice. First in 2010 then again in 2014. The first band slipped twice so I replaced it instead of being SLEEVED because #1 I was afraid of being SLEEVED (although it was suggested) #2 I lost 100 lbs with the BAND & thought why would I switch. Now after a year & few months I'm having issues with tightness & gerd. I keep going up & down with the fills which is not good. My BMI is under 30 but my Insurance will pay because I'm having same symptoms as first time plus more & I cannot tolerate fills. So all ins & my Doctor requires is an EGD (my last one was 2010) also Labwork & EKG. My EGD is on April 30th. I exercise & still eat small portions & protein shakes everyday. My PCP & Bariatric Surgeon calls me their star patient, because I'm not giving up or giving in to old bad eating habits. Sooooooooooo that's my story & I've done lots of research on the SLEEVE & I know this is for me. I've also been to two support groups which wasn't asked or required. I felt that "I" needed to do that for me.

    Valdosta, GA

A lot has happened in a year. The Valdosta Bariatric clinic is now at Choice Family Medicine. Just happens to be at the office of my primary care manager Dr. Richard Rickman's office. Jody Young is there (Awesome!) and Dan Ayers, I didn't know him from last year, but he's been great to work with so far as well. They work with more than one surgeon, so if you go, there are options. I was initially going to see Dr. Michael Baptista in JAX but had a paperwork hangup between their office and Tri-Care and since I had already had an approval last year for surgery with Dr. Cywes, Jody has been working this closely. Now I'm approved to go with Dr. Christopher Smith in Albany (Tifton). There is a support goup meeting held at the office each month, although I haven't made it to one yet, I definately will be.
