    February 2021 bypassers?

I am scheduled for Feb 10. It’s been crazy fast. I met with the surgeon online for the first time Tuesday and my surgery is in two weeks so I ate my last solid food for 5 weeks yesterday and start my 2 week liquid pre surgery diet today.

    Four Week Post RNY

Those who were in my February 2019 group will remember that I had essentially no problems at all. Well, not entirely true: I ended up with a leak after surgery that had to be repaired and resulted in a longer hospital stay than anticipated. After that, however, I had essentially no pain and no major challenges. I actually felt guilty posting about my progress when some of the others who had surgery at the same time were struggling quite a bit. I'm happy to report, however, that all of us eventually ended up where we wanted to be. The journey is different for everyone, but the end result is usually the same.

    Barely loseing

first week is from the IV fluids they gave you in the hospital. Some people gain as much as 10 lbs from that (I can't remember how much I "gained" - maybe 4 or 5 lbs). It can take up to a week for it to work its way out. Also, almost everyone has their first stall within the first 4-6 weeks after surgery. It's usually the third week (thus, the "three-week stall"), but not always. Mine was weeks 2 & 3. During week 4, it broke and I dropped like 6-8 lbs practically overnight.

    Barely loseing

I lost virtually nothing in the first two weeks - in fact I came home 5 pounds heavier than the day of surgery. Lots of fluids (IVs), gas, swelling etc. from the hospital stay. So the 2nd week, I finally got down to my pre-surgery weight! After the first couple weeks, the scale starting moving down pretty quick. Had a stall around week 10, starting drinking a lot more water, and I've lost 5 pounds in the last 2 weeks. You're doing really well. Don't try to compare yourself to anyone else. Everyone heals at different rates depending upon how fit they were pre-surgery, preexisting conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure etc. Listen to your body, rest when you need to, drink plenty of fluids and be very cautious as you start adding foods into your diet.
  5. Many of you know, when God was handing out boobs.... I must have gotten in that line a few times..... Anyway 2009 band bra size 44H, 2017 band removal 34G, 2019 sleeve 36G/H.....Last bra i bought was a 30GG (cup was a little big at the top, it's now full) Recently with the sleeve i finally started losing some and thought (prob around F/FF)... Yayyyyy. But over the past few weeks, they (the boobs) have been really tinder and nipple are is very sensitive. I blew it off to ovulation time (even though i don't have a uterus i still have ovaries) But last night Tim and i were in the shower and i looked down and asked..... are these getting bigger are is it just my imagination?..... He concurred, they are.....OMG WTF..... The scale has not moved, i'm still at the same weight...... why dear Lord. Anyone else go through this..... Not like i can ask anyone else.... Tim seems to think Menopause has kicked into high gear and i should go see my GYN. Thought, ideas, words of encouragement.... anything...
  6. I was the same way ... no real health issues at all (except high blood pressure which was easily managed and genetic as much as weight related). However when I hit age 58 or 59 I noticed that things were starting to get much worse quite rapidly. By 61 when I couldn't tie my shoes or walk up the stairs without being exhausted and my knees hurt constantly and back spams every few months (and the worst was the 10 minutes of yoga needed to loosen up enough to do a number 2 and clean myself) ... I knew it was time.
  7. I am 2 months out and the last three weeks had stall after stall and had to eat my way through them. As strange as it is, I am losing more weight at 800 to 1,000 calories than if I go below that. I make sure I get my 80 to 90 grams of protein and then push to hit at least 800 calories and then the stalls stopped. If I drop below 800 calories I stall out. The surgeon said my sweet spot will be 1000 to 1100 calories but I just cannot get that much in when I am working during the day. I would say I am fairly active as far as working out 4 to 5 times a week and I really try to make sure on those days I get to 1,000 calories a day. I haven't figured out how I will go up to 1200 in the next few months but I figure I will worry about that when it comes. I had a 10 day stall at one point when I was consistently at 650 a day, I guess everyones body is different so you have to find that sweet spot
  8. I am probably the worst scar healer on earth, (or at least in the top 10) lol. I had mine done a year ago also (TT, Breast Lift, Arm Lift), and the majority of it is still very dark and some raised. I did have 2 rounds of steroid injections the past couple months as well on various places and I have to say it has made a HUGE noticeable difference. But they are still probably still worse than most other people who are way further out than me. I was prepared for this as I have a long history of hyperthrophic scarring. The eventually fade, but I know it will take years for me. Tummy tuck: Darkest at the edges, less dark above my pubic area. They were pretty raised at the ends, but since the steroids, they are almost flat. There are a couple small 1/2 long sections along the middle that only have thin white line. Belly Button: dark, flat thin line...from far away it looks like I have a dirty belly button, hahahaha. Breast Lift: Again, darkest at the ends close to my sides, as well as the t-junction at the bottom of each breast. The ends were raised, but not anymore since the steroids, but the t-junctions are still raised (I plan on getting another round for these guys in a couple months). The scars around my nipples are both thin skin-coloured lines (just a little lighter, but not white). Arm Lift. Ugh. These are the worst of them all. They are dark, wide, and before the steroids super raised (think bungee cord). They have lighted up dramatically since the steroids (all of the areas treated have), but still dark compared to "normal" healers. At least they are flat now! For some reason though, the scars in my both my armpits are invisible. These areas were the fastest to heal and disappear (I wonder if it was because of the "moisture" in that area...lol). But even with all my scars, I'd do it all again in a heartbeat. I know they will fade eventually. The tummy and breast scars are hidden even in my tiniest bikini, but yeah, my arm scars are in full view when I lift my arms to go "Whooooo!" hahahaha. When they are down, you can't see a thing...except for one small section on my right arm from the back, even when my arms are down. But no biggie. P.S. On a related note, I also had 2 sections of my scar "cord" cut as it was affecting the mobility of my right arm. I'm all good now. P.P.S. Sorry this was so long.

    Coffee

It really seems like it should, but there's a lot of studies coming out saying coffee really isn't making anyone dehydrated. I agree water is the best option, still, but maybe this is good news for more people? https://www.npr.org/sections/thesalt/2014/01/13/262175623/coffee-myth-busting-cup-of-joe-may-help-hydration-and-memory
  10. I had my arms and a fleur de lis TT revision about a year ago. The scars on my stomach are fading to a light pink and some spots are almost skin color. My arm scars are still a very dark pink and are wider than the scar on my stomach. I know with time they will fade more but does anyone else have some areas that faded much faster than others? The plastic surgeon did a steroid injection a few weeks ago to an area on my belly because it was raised. It's been 6 weeks and it has helped so I am thinking if I should have more areas on my arms injected. I know we are not supposed to have any steroids after WLS but the plastic surgeon said the dose is less than 1% of what an oral steroid would be. Still, my skin gets really thin from steriod injections so I don't want to do an injection if not necessary. Old scars I have are all faded but they are 10-20 years old so I don't know if my arms will eventually fade as well or if I will be stuck with pink scars long term. Any thoughts or opinions?

    Revision

I’m considering a revision but am doing intermittent fasting for a few months and returning to the eat Protein first basics before I decide. Fasting worked well with my sleeve until Covid, antidepressants and menopause did a triple wammy regain-wise. Very frustrating since I’m 10 years out. I plan to use fasting for maintenance regardless, just thinking that greater restriction would be nice to have. Interesting to hear what others are considering.

    Gastric Sleevr Vs. Bypass

I started with a BMI of 49.9. Had my sleeve surgery Aug of 2019. My BMI is now 26, which is right at the weight that my surgeon, PCP, as I set as my goal. I’ve had a steady loss all along, with a few short stalls. I still have a very strong restriction. I can eat most foods, but in very small quantities. Although I do experience some hunger, I don’t really have cravings and find it very easy to take one bite of something and leave the rest. The sleeve has worked for me just as designed.

    Gastric Sleevr Vs. Bypass

313 was my top weight, 307 on my first appt with the Surgeon in Dec 2019 and I was 293 on my surgery day Aug 24th, I'm only 5 ft 3 5" had a Bmi of like 53 and a waist of 59 inches, My waist now (20 weeks later is 41 inches). I chose the R&Y because I wanted the most restrictions and requirements possible, the extra accountability that comes with the stricter reginine of supplements for life, low fat and no sugar. Dumping syndrome is AWFUL!! its nausea, the cold sweats, upset stomach etc like a sudden flu that happens in minutes. It happens if u have too much sugar, Fat or just too much food in your stomach, especially with fluid and then it goes through faster than it should. The 30/30 rule is for real! I also felt in all my research and my surgeon agreed that my GERD (acid Reflux) and my EOE Eociniphilic Esophogitus (Spontaneous regurgitating) would both be better with the R&Y. Gerd can get worse with the sleeve. They were right and my Gerd is gone and I no longer need meds for it either. I'm down 68 lbs since surgery and I'm 100% confident I made the right choice for me. I also Didn't want to go through a revision of sleeve to Bypass if it didn't work well enough for me. I have lost and gained 100 lbs multiple times in my life and I never wanna go through it again. I need the stricter food guidelines for my progress, the accountability and responsibility keeps me on track. Not 1 item with real sugar in it since 2 weeks before surgery. Fruit is my only real sugar and I am careful to eat very small portions of low sugar fruits like berries and some green apple. I put pyure sugar sub on things that need it but thats rare as things do taste sweeter. You really have to make the decision that's best for your individual wants, needs and preferences. I had a lot of pain post op, I did have my Galbladder out too tho so I have 9 incision scars instead of the 5 most ppl have. It took a few hours for the nurses to get my pain under control and I had some pain for first few weeks at home. Then suddenly it was gone. I also rejected no less that 2 dissolving stitches from 5 of my incisions, this has happened to me before with other surgeries. I would do it all over again tho.

    February 2021 Sleeve Surgery

My surgery is the 19th. I have to be on a 2 week low calorie diet which is basically a liquid diet of water, 3-4 protein drinks a day and 6 servings a day from a list of things like sugar free jello/pudding, 8oz of milk, unsweetened applesauce, a packet of oatmeal, etc. I worry it’ll be a struggle and be very rough. It’s amazing how every doctor/surgeon has different requirements. I was in a class in December where all 3 of us are going to have the gastric sleeve. 2 of us with the same surgeon were required to go on this diet 2 weeks prior to surgery and the 3rd person who had a different surgeon did not have to have any diet prior to surgery. Best of luck! My nerves are really kicking in! I had the lapband 10 years ago so this is not my first surgery.

    December 2020

I feel like each person has a different path and along the way you will get better results than we deserve and other times we get worse results than what we deserve. I started my journey 12/29/19 and have lost 89 lbs since my highest and 40 lbs of that since my surgery on 12/2/20. I've had unexpected losses of 1.8 lbs and also gains of .8 lbs in one day with no real reason for it. I've also started to see a slowing of weight loss since doing my 1 mile treadmill walk and some resistance band work outs about 4-5 days per week in the last 2 weeks. My mind is starting to get away from the number on the scale to how I look and more importantly how I feel. Losing 8" from my waist and dropping from 3XL to XL has inspired me and adding some tanning salon fake sun has made me feel great. I enjoy reading everyone's progress, keep up the work!

OMG - the last 10 pounds!

The last 10 are really hard, I was already a slow loser and I had to push to lose the final 10. I went to the gym and forced myself to take classes 4 days a week, I rode my bike and went on walks at least 5 days a week. I also ate really clean and drank a lot of water. That was on top of my regular gym schedule of 4-5 days a week. I promised myself that I wouldn’t give up, it was hard but It was worth it. I really miss going to the gym. I never thought I’d say that!
  18. Hi! I am new to this forum. I got my lapband in 2013. My starting weight was 280lbs and I am about 5'3". In the first year I lost 95 pounds and was down to 185lbs. I never had a fill as my doctor never recommended one. In the last 4 years I have shot back up to 225lb as menopause had set in and I started to lag going to the doctor which was no help. I am now 56 years old and can't seem to budge even a couple of pounds off. I have moved out of the state where I had the procedure years ago and had a consult with the local general/bariatric surgeon about 10 months ago. He agreed to remove the lapband and do a revision to bypass. I met remotely with the bariatric nurse and participated in the orientation zoom meeting. I went for my first weigh in as I was told I would have to start from scratch and in the program and work with a doctor or dietitian for 6 months before they would get approval for the surgery which Iwas more than willing to do. I was turned off by the nurses attitude as she never answered my calls to guide me in the right direction to get started so I gave up on the idea. I feel stuck, depressed and frustrated and I don't know where to turn. My insurance has changed and I can't seem to find a doctor to help me. Thanks for listening. OMG - the last 10 pounds!

I know this pain all too well. I rollercoastered all through December trying to shed the last 10 pounds. I finally hit that goal this morning after 6ish weeks of bouncing up and down. You will get there!

OMG - the last 10 pounds!

OMG! I had no idea how hard the last 10 pounds would be. I've been within 10 pounds of my goal since before Thanksgiving. I currently have 4 pounds to go. It's been up and down (literally). I never really hit a stall along my journey until these last 10 pounds. My loss had slowed but I could count on at least a 5-6 pound loss a month. But, oh no, not now. I had major surgery in December so I didn't expect much in December but 6 pounds in nearly 3 months SUCKS. Thanks for listening and I know I will get to goal. I just hope it's before summer gets here.

10 yrs ago I lost 40 lbs, got a lot of “you look great!” comments, but it was because I almost died. I don’t make comments on someone else’s weight loss unless they ask for encouragement. I don’t like to make comments on other people’s bodies to prevent “foot in mouth” disease

    Stall

just stick to your plan and stay off your scale. Your weight loss WILL start up again. Trust me. No need to do anything with your calories. I would answer this differently if you were several months out and had stalled for more than a month, but with you being less than a month out, no. This early stall happens to everyone, and it typically lasts 1-3 weeks. Just stay the course and follow your surgeon's plan. you're in a different position than the original poster since you're 10 months out. Six weeks is a bit long for a stall - you may be in maintenance. Are you still tracking all your food? I would think you'd still be losing at 750-900 calories. I guess it COULD be a really long stall = in which case, it might be worth it to switch things up like the others have said - but if you're not still weighing/measuring and tracking your food, I'd start with that..
  25. I have united healthcare (in Arizona) and used my insurance. visits were all covered with regular co pay. Documented diet for 6 months during which had to lose 10% of body weight, 1200 calorie diet, and see nutritionist once per month. Also had to see a psychologist once, get an ekg, Surgery was covered as an elective procedure 80/20. I had to pay about $2500 total. I hope that helps. 😃
