8 Days post op and weight gain from morning to evening
4LgrLife_53 replied to babelfish5's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
You need to weigh at the same time, preferably in the morning. By evening, you have 3 meals in your tummy/sleeve or in your intestines, which will affect your weight by evening. Water weight gain alone will tip the scales in the opposite direction. Also, muscle weighs more than fat, so as you're cutting back on calories and exercising, you are building muscle. Before surgery I had major problems with lower leg edema (Fluid buildup) and without the Lasix I could easily pack on 4-5 pounds of water in my body and legs. Thankfully that has eased up. I'm 8 days Post-OP and have seen a drop in weight since surgery. I'm now about 31 pounds down since beginning this journey. Good luck! -
8 Days post op and weight gain from morning to evening
babelfish5 posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hello Sleevers, I weighed myself in the am and was 238. Yay!! 10 pounds in 8 days. Now I weigh myself this evening and I'm 240. I'm only drinking Protein shakes and a half cup of Soup for lunch. Total calories is about 470. I'm also walking at a brisk pace for an hour for exercise. It's not the calories. The only thing diffrent today was that I managed to get about 58 ounces of Water down. So, I think this could be just water weight and it will all work it's way out eventually. Has anyone else had or seen this? -
Counting Down the Days to a Slimmer Me!
Fatdiva14 posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi Everyone...I'm new to this site, as well as this journey. Tipping the scale has always been a huge fear factor for me...and yet I've managed to do it several times. The smallest I've been ever in adult years was 120lbs, and I was only 21. I managed to ride the roller coaster of weight gain in small increments and eventually skimmed the edge of the 140lb mark until I was about 26...and pregnant. By the time I gave birth to my son, I was a whopping 227lbs. The weight didn't melt away in my post pregnany workouts. It took a lot of work, appetite suppresant pills, water aerobics and a bunch of whinning. But my body finally gave in, and allowed me to maintain a more curvaceous physique where I hovered over the realm of 160-165lbs. It took time to accept that I would probably never get to 120lbs again, but at least I was comfortable. Fastforward 10 years later, and I am sick to my stomach every time I step on the scale at the doctor's office, or in my bathroom at home. I never imagined that I would weigh 200lbs or more. As of today, I weigh 236lbs, and my body is screaming at me. My once small frame is proportionately lopsided as my stomach bulges out of anything I wear. I refuse to wear pants, unless I absolutely have to wear them...and that is usually when all of my dresses are unavailable waiting to be dry cleaned or washed on the gentle cycle. This summer I found myself buying dresses as often as I could, because I was comfortable. Pants restrict me, and searching for a shirt or blouse to hide the muffin top and wide hips is not a convenience. I remember the first time the scale bypassed the 190 mark and landed on 201. I was devasted. I kicked into high gear and tried every type of diet you can think of...including Weight Watchers. I joined several weightloss clinics and received B12 shots and more appetite suppressant pills. The journey was hard and depressing. I ordered every workout DVD you can think off, including the latest and greatest Shawn T's T25. Check out the rest of my story! http://www.bariatricpal.com/user/240301-fatdiva14/ -
First off, congratulations on your weight loss. I think it is common for some individuals who undergo weight loss surgery to gain some of the weight back. And normally when a woman has a child, it is common to have a little weight gain. So a weight gain of 10 pounds does not seem excessive. To maintain your weight loss, it is back to basics of Protein intake, food volume, Vitamins and exercise. I have also heard that the stomach heals after about 1 1/2 years and begins to absorb 100% of the calories from food instead of 70%. I do not know this for a fact. I am 1 1/2 years from RNY surgery, so I should see this effect around now. If this is true, then it will mean that I may have to cut my caloric intake.

My update! I had an Upper GI today at Kaiser and the bariatric surgeon emailed me with results within an hour of me leaving the office. He said "looks better" so then I ask "so what's the plan from here"? He said that it is better but my esophagus is still a little dilated, so he said give it one more month and from there he feels confident to do a fill to get me back on track without doing another UGI. When I saw the barium go right through and collect down in my lower stomach quickly compared to when they did it 7 weeks ago where even some jiggling and dancing around for 15 minutes kept the barium above the band. This almost 30lbs weight gain since my band was unfilled has been quite depressing. I had to go up a few sizes in clothes, sell my track day to my favorite track because I had no leathers to wear and just feel huge in general. I know others are struggling with more weight than that and my friends say "you look great" but I feel enormous and miss my entire wardrobe of clothes and jackets that didn't make me look frumpy! :-/ So we shall see what happens in a month. WOuld be nice to start getting some fill back. I know I wont be going back to where I was before..toooo tight. I learned my lesson to not put up with behaviors that are not "normal" and to get back to bandster portions again. I have been working hard to reduce portions, calories, working out etc. It is discouraging to STILL see the scale go up, but it seems to have slowed down. Hoping for at least a maintain for now if not tiny loss! I am just so happy to keep my band for now. It did what it was supposed to do and had been doing for years..keep my weight off. I want that back!!

Official Ongoing Gastric Sleeve Maintenance Thread
windycitymom replied to Oregondaisy's topic in WLS Veteran's Forum
Thanks so much feedyoureye! Can you share more about your experience on 5:2. It sounds like it is a permanent way of eating and not just a diet? I feel like every month I am craving carbs and making poor choices with little to no control or restriction and I've learned how to eat around my sleeve and I'm worried. Additionally, I feel like my body fat composition is changing significantly more than my mere 5-7 lb weight gain, so it is depressing me. I used to be a size 4 and now and a solid barely size 6. Overall, I'm still happy with that but do feel "heavy" like I used to before WLS. I just feel like I can "get away with it" and therefore I CAN make the poor choices that I'm making. Basically, I need a reality check and need to get my eating back in order so I'm thinking I need to do the Pouch/sleeve test and then do the 5:2. Can you share your experience with 5:2? what do you eat on your 5 days and what do you eat on your 2 days? Do you have a good official website? anything sleeve related to know about doing the 5:2? Thank in advance for sharing! Lisa -

I had my surgery in 2008 i was 415 pound i was 147 pounds when i found out i was 6 weeks pregnant. even before pregnant i had alot of restriction and was always dehydrated but rather gain back weight i just kept the restriction. when i found out i was 6 weeks pregnant i had 3 cc taken out of my band because i didnt want to chance having a misscarage or any problems with my baby, which left me with no restriction at all. I gained 20 pounds with in the first week and had swelling and i am still gaining weight at an insane rate atleast 5 pounds a week im in the gym almost 4 times a week for 35 minutes to an hour on the eliptical i and i eat alot of fruit and veggitables and i cant understand why in gaining so much weight im now 11 weeks pregnant and weigh 185 pounds. my obgyn has done test and all my brood work looks fine im just getting upset becasue im watching what im eating and exercising and cant seem to keep a steady normal weight gain. has anyone else gained alot of weight durring there pregnancy? -
I didn't think about needing new bras! I don't want to lose all of my boobies. I hope my weight loss is proportional like my weight gain has been. ... but I can lose all of my stomach!

Thoughts on sugar free?
kikicoates78 replied to nails211's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Sugar will just slow down ur weightloss. The whole point that I was given is your 1st year is your golden year. U want to lose all u can. Cutting out sugars, starches and bread until u meet your goal weight is critical. Then u have to slowly re-introduce them making sure they don't cause weight gain. But as they say it's a life style change. I have easily given up all of the above but I'm just 2 weeks post op. Good Luck to you! -
Post Surgery (As in just out of Hospital) Weight Gain

I gained 8 pounds! I was mad! Lol. Nobody warned me about the IV fluid weight gain and I had so much on my mind I didn't even consider that happening. But it comes off fast. Rest assured! -
Post Surgery (As in just out of Hospital) Weight Gain

I gained 11 pounds in the 3 nights I had to stay, very disappointed in the huge weight gain. I did lose it in 4 days though and I'm still losing a pound a day. Down 26 pounds since my journey began in April. Today I got out my size 14 jeans and they fit, not tight at all in fact they were falling off me. Boy I was dancing in my room with joy! -
Post Surgery (As in just out of Hospital) Weight Gain
babelfish5 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello All, I was sleeved on November 4th, 2014 and released November 5th. During my stay in the hospital, I received 5 - 6 bags of IV Fluid. When I came home, I weighed myself and saw I had a 10 pond weight gain. The night of the 5th, I went to the bathroom like clockwork, every 2 hours. This morning I was only up by about 2 pounds. I'm assuming that this is the Water weight from the IV's and it will eventually come off. Has anyone else has this experience? If so, how long does it take for the water weight to come off? -
Week 6: May 27-31st Sleevers
4andcounting replied to lylabelle's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
What's really weird to me is how different I feel just those 3 little pounds of weight gain. I feel fat again. I know its completly mental cuz I couldn't possibly look any different but I can't shake the feeling. So I have cut more calories and exercised harder. Any other ideas to get over this now over 2 month stahl? I knew stahls were going to happen but everything I read said it would last a week or two weeks. Not only has mine lasted this long but it happened only 3 months out. Am I alone in thinking there must be something wrong? I go for my 6 month check up on the 21st. It will be sad if I weight the same that I did at my 3 month check up. -
For those of you who have AETNA, be careful about your weight gain. I have AETNA open access and I called the insurance company to verify because I was told previously that it was ok as long as there is no net gain at the end of my 3 months. WRONG! There cannot be any weight gain during your 3 month or 6 month weigh-ins with your PCP or surgeons office. You will be denied. Make sure you have lost weight each time you go in to weigh-in. With that being said make sure you know what your policy entails.
-
I think they denied you because you hadn't done the 6 months of nutritional meeting alone, I don't think it had nothing to do with gaining 2 lbs. That would make no sense, maybe once you've completed the 6 months of meetings it will be a different outcome. I mean people gain weight all the time I hardly doubt the 2lb weight gain played a factor in their decision

Becca, Thank you so much for being so candid and telling your story that was so poignant! It takes alot of courage to talk about the emotions that come with descrimination that sometimes feels like it takes away your power. Congratulations for being your own advocate, moving forward and making bold choices for your own life. I applaud you! Some of my struggles were similar to yours and some were different. I happened to be a "beanpole" growing up with frizzy, naturally curly hair and glasses. I say all this to make the point that even though I was skinny didn't mean I fit in...As I got married and had children ( 4 of them to be exact) My body decided it didn't want to lose weight. I too gained alot when I was pregnant with each child and never could really lose much afterwards, 20 pds. hear and there. But each time I lost, I would inevidably gain it back and then some. It was a steady climb up the weight gain "ladder." I am now 51. The wake up call was when I kept exercising, eating right and yet I would still gain weight. I blamed alot of the medications I'm on. Then my last dr. visit was like somebody snapped me out of a dream. "It looks like we will have to put you on a second blood pressure medication." I realized I was walking down the wrong road and with that decided I was taking charge of my health and my life and making a change. I decided to walk "the road less traveled." So, on this forum, it is nice to walk the road with others, like you! I hope we can encourage each other along the way. I have no reservations about the decision, I'm so ready! Just with losing 20 pds. on my pre-op diet, I notice when I go out that people talk to me more, respond to me more, hear what I'm saying. I don't feel so invisible. But my response from my immediate family members has been less than. Meaning, I would like them to celebrate my weight loss and yet, I usually get silence or them making some comment about how they are unable to lose weight, in other words the focus is on them. I think that is why this forum is a great relief to me because we are going through this together and can praise and celebrate our choices and accomplishments together. Tomorrow is my big day! flying to San Diego, having surgery in Tijuana on Friday! I can't wait!

I was denied!
changing slowly replied to michellew1's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Now I'm scared! At my first weigh in they explained to me that if I gained even 1 pound the insurance would deny me and i would have to start the 4 month process all over again. I am trying to eat right and drink lots of water like they have told me to do but i i got on the scale 2 days before 2nd weigh in and it said i gained 2 pounds! I had to take water pills for 2 days before my appointment so that when i weighed in it said i lost 4 pounds! It's crazy i have become obsessed i know its all water weight because 2 days later my weight was back up 2 pounds. I have 2 more weigh ins and I'm afraid I won't make it. On top of everything else I'm an insulin diabetic on hospital grade concerated insulin that causes massive weight gain and they won't take thatinto cconsideration. -
Hey there. So...I had the lap band in 2008 and had a pretty stable and successful lap band life up until last year. I started at 225 and the lowest I got was about 165. My goal is around 155-160 so I was pretty close. Last year, around this time of year, I started having a lot of issues PBing and I could barely keep anything down. This went on for a few months and it was very difficult because I moved to a new state and the doctor there was giving me problems about scheduling an appointment because I had the surgery elsewhere. After dealing with it for so long, getting frustrated then finally throwing up blood, i decided to go to the ER. They unfilled me completely and said I had some reflux along with pre-ulcer symptoms. They advised me to keep it unfilled for a while and follow up with a lap band doctor. Well, then I had to move again for work to another state. So in the process of all that, I haven't had it refilled again since then. With that said....I'm now back up to 210lbs. That's about a 40lb weight gain from where I was this time last year. :-( Discouraged and disappointment doesn't even begin to explain how I feel. It took so long to get to the weight I was comfortable with. After moving it took months to finally get an appointment scheduled with a lap band doctor where I'm living now and I have an appointment for next week. In the photos you can see me at my heaviest and lightest. I'm not all the way back where I was but I'm almost there. The picture of me in blue button down sweater is recent and feel like that's going to be my "heavy" picture again. I feel like I'm starting all over again.

From the pic (this is of course speculation on my part!), but the majority of your weight is in your upper body. Your legs are not huge, and unless you have on 2 pairs of full length Spanx under your leggings, I think you're golden on the lower half. You may end up with loose skin on the arms if you fail to exercise post-op (once cleared by your MD of course) and do lots of weight training / bands etc. for your arms. Since you've had 3 c-sections, the retraction of your belly will be different from others who have not been cut with a transverse 'bikini' cut like you have; that causes a loss of muscle strength which is worsened by weight gain and the fact that it's been done 3 times. Also, there's likely a seperation of your upper abdominal muscles that can only be repaired with a tummy tuck. If you do decide to have an abdominoplasty after your weight loss, they can create magic for you, and you'll end up with a really nice, flat tummy. I think you'll do great! Youth is on your side!

Wow Samantha a size 18 Calvin Klein, what a milestone! All the marathon training etc that is going on is so impressive too. I am not more hungry... yet. I have days when I can eat a little more, and others when I can't. But really those just cancel themselves out and I don't think that I am overeating. Snacking I could see could happen. Various people in my UK group who are further down the line than we are are going to Slimming World, or the equivalent for much the same reason and that seems to be really helpful for accumulative bad eating habits and weight gain. I have never stopped going but I would be stricter again if I was having problems with my eating/weight. At the moment as I am having such small amounts and focusing on protein so I find that I sometimes eat things that would not be on the plan, like occasional nuts. There is no reason to ever be hungry following SW so that is a real bonus. Take care all of you. Claire

Confused and disappointed
ready2B replied to Jorrin's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am still pre-op but I've had a ton of other surgeries and I can vouch for the IV fluids causing a LOT of water weight gain! I've gained as much as 15 lbs from a surgery. You might also have some swelling inside, Give it time, that surgical water weight should come off very easily in the next week or so. -

That seeming "Weight gain" happened to me too! While the scale might not be your friend right now, the internet certainly CAN be. I read a ridiculous amount before and still after the surgery, looking for comfort that what was going on- from that post surgery weight GAIN to the hideous "gurgly gut" that plagued me for about a week- was normal. Keep your chin up, my friend. It will get better and the weight will come off. -
I've been stalking this forum for over a year now, and appreciate all the advice and support you've provided on here. I've recently made the decision to go forward with the Lap Band and could not be more pleased and confident in my decision. The only thing holding me back at this point is support (financial and emotional) from my family. I will be a self-pay, and I'm 95% certain I want to go with Dr. John Weaver in CO. Unfortunately, I was not able to qualify for enough CareCredit on my own, and asked my father to jointly apply with me, and we qualified for enough to cover the costs (WOOHOO!!). The caveat is, he will only allow me to use the CareCredit if my mother supports the decision. About a year ago, I brought up the idea of a Lap Band with my parents, and they were extremely against the idea. My mom was angry and said I just needed to do things that I'm sure we're all sick of hearing- join WW, talk to a dietitian, exercise more.... the whole gamut of things that obviously never worked. I know a lot of it is probably fear of going into surgery. After a year of research and more weight gain, I am sure this is what I need. However, I am afraid to bring it up to my mother as the whole procedure depends on her support, and I really need and want that support. I'm a single, 26 year old female. I know this probably sounds silly, considering my age, but without them I have no way of affording the procedure. Plus, I really don't want to go through this alone, and would love so much for them to be on board and cheerlead me on! Has anyone been in a similar situation with parents, spouses, or loved ones? How did you tell/convince them this was the right thing and that it just wasn't going to happen through normal diet and exercise?
