    Bad knees, what will work

Hi @Dragonrider. Welcome to the forum and congrats on your upcoming surgery. As you can see by my forum name, it was all about walking without pain for me. I had horrible knees and every step was torturous. Can I suggest rather than walking, swim laps if you have access to a pool. Anything you do in the Water is easier on your joints than out of the water. I still exercise in the water even with the enormous weight loss. As far as feeling better...if your knees are not shot, you will feel better the smaller you get. If the damage is done however, you may need to have surgical intervention but that's a conversation you will have with your orthopedist at some point if necessary. I needed replacement and my doctor said without a 70 lb. weight loss, I'd have a poor outcome even with surgery. I lost the weight, had the surgery, lost more weight, and now I'm nearly back to normal. When you can't walk, you don't take it for granted when you can. And I can. Good luck to you!
  2. Well I finally got my date of surgery for May 6th. My knees are killing me. I have been doing a lot of walking to start my weight loss before surgery, have any of you guys had knee problems prior to surgery and did they improve after weight loss ? what can I expect when the weight starts to come off and what can I do for exercise that will help with my weight loss, until hopefully my knees start to feel better.

    Hair Loss

You need to make sure that you are drinking enough protein each day. Protein defiency is the number 1 key to hair loss. There are also preventative method. Discuss this with your doctor.
  4. So I'm going to go have my 3rd fill on Friday... a little nervous because after my 2nd fill I was way to tight and am scared of getting over filled again today. Even though my Doc does the fills with Fluro and he can see the liquid pass through the band I still am nervous but KNOW I need a fill because I get hungry after 2 hours and I mean stomach rumbling hungry and I can eat way more the 3-4oz of Protein and 1/2 cup of veggies and 1/4 starch per meal. So here's hoping all goes well after friday and I get back to losing weight! I know he is gonna be unhappy with my weight loss so far but it's hard even with the band to lose weight it's just a tool not a cure all..... keep telling yourself that Zen keep telling yourself that!

    Lapband And Hair Loss

I didn't have any hair loss during my process. I did have the confedance to grow my natrual hair out. No longer dieing my hair it's healthier then ever. When you do eat make sure what you eat counts and it's healthy. Im sure if the amount you are able to eat was all junk food instead of good healthy food you may have problems like that.

    Should I have high expectations?

Victor, welcome. . first off let me congratulate you on your decision to have the VSG. . second off i'm glad you found us, we are always here for you if you need us. . . well victor, let me tell you. . in 7 short weeks after my surgery i have lost 53 lbs. . . so you see it is dueable. . however, you get what you put into it. . . as a medical person you understand that. . . the first week or so after surgery it's feels really weird, can't explain it, but it does . . . you will have to relearn to eat, and drink again. . . in the beginning i hated my sleeve but then got used to doing what i was supposed to do. . . the sleeve doesn't allow you to gulp fluids anymore, you will be full (turkey dinner full) after a few mouthfuls . . . for example here is what my day menu for today consists of. . . Breakfast Protein shake and a baby teaspoon of flaxseed sugar free, low fat Peanut Butter. (200 calories) Lunch: 3 slices of 98% fat free ham (60 calories) Dinner: 2 oz extra lean ground hamburger, made into tiny little meatballs soaked with teriyaki sauce 3 small brusselsprouts (165 calories) Evening Snack: 4 oz Dannon Light N Fit yogurt frozen (60 calories) Total calories for the day 485 . . . I drink alot of Water along with decaff coffee. . . I try to keep my calories anywhere from 500 - 600 per day no more. . . You will do great as long as you follow the doctor orders and ignore the head hunger. . . once you get over that you will just fly through the weight loss. . . they say it takes 30 days to change a habit. . . well this overeating thing has been a bad habit of ours for a long time, takes alot of work to change it. . . but it can be done.! Good luck:biggrin0:
  10. Ok, quick stats - 7 weeks post op. Eating Solid Foods. Getting in Protein and Water (well a little light on water lately but working on it) So here's the question. I have noticed my hair start to shed more than usual. I have very long, thick hair. I knew it was going to fall out and am prepared for it, however I have a hair appointment the end of October where I go in and get my usual color and highlights. Is the bleach they use going to make my hair fall out more? Is it going to really damage it? If so what about just coloring it? I can go dark for the winter months but just need to be prepared. Also - prior to surgery I have a thing going on with my stylist where we are growing my hair down to my butt. It's something I have always wanted to do and she says I have the perfect hair for it. If it gets too bad how do I explain to her what happened without telling her about surgery?

    Lapband And Hair Loss

I have experienced major hair loss...it started about 3 months post op. If you search posts using "hair loss" you will find lots of good information. It has a lot to do with having rapid weight loss. I have had a few surgeries in my life and some say it is the anesthesia but not in my case. I take Biotin and use Nioxin (special shampoo). I am now 6 months post op and it has stopped for the most part and I can see new growth. I think some of it is attributed to lack of protein but in my opinion, it's the rapid weight loss.

    Lapband And Hair Loss

I hadn't heard about the delayed hair loss - but I definitely noticed I lost less hair than usual the first 2 months and at end of month three it started falling out like crazy. Luckily I have a lot of hair, even so it feels much different now when I touch it. I've added biotin and at month 6 (+) I think the loss is slowing down. I do see new hair coming out.

Protein strategy - what is yours?

Dairy seems to make me sick, traditional Protein shakes are just not working for me. If it's milky or creamy, my stomach gets angry. My coworker who also just had the sleeve ordered an unflavored protein from Amazon and let me try it and it tastes fine even in crystal lite. I ordered some yesterday to put in everything I eat. I start puréed foods today so it shouldn't be too hard to do. I'm only 2 weeks post op and my weight loss has been stalled since last Friday, hopefully finally meeting my protein goals will give me a boost.

    Lapband And Hair Loss

The hair loss is coming and you are batteling 2 things..... 1) lack of or decrease of Protein. 2) anethesia they use has hairloss as one of its side effects. You will notice the hair loss around the 3-5 month post-op. Mine was 3 months.

    Lapband And Hair Loss

Hair loss isn't specific to WLS surgery but all surgery. It's the body reacting to all the drugs they pump into you during it, specifically the anesthetic. Every time I have surgery my hair thins for a month or two after but then always goes back to normal eventually.

    MT. RIBIDOUX HIKE YAYYYYY

Thanks Pam The weight loss helps soooo much! Of course it doesn't repair the damage already done, but it totally takes the pressure off of the knees. 1 pound is 7 pounds of pressure on our poor knees. Believe me when I say my knees love my sleeve too.

    One Day Closer To Friday

Nothing new to report here from my neck of the woods. Totally unmotivated to go to the gym yesterday, but I did it, brisk walk on the treadmill for a half hour and I was sweating, sore today. Going back to the gym again tonight. This weekend is going to be tough. Tomorrow night is my friend's birthday party at the casino--so nervous about that and what/how I'm going to eat. My two best girlfriends who are going (one is the birthday girl the other is another good friend) know that I have the lapband so they don't think it's odd how I eat, but the tradition is the day after our night of festivites we go to a diner and get food. Usually I get an omlette with cheese, mushroom, and all the fixins'. I think this time it'll be an egg white omlette with veggies a little cheese and fruit. Saturday night the bf wants shrimp scampi think I can handle 4 oz of shrimp and a little pasta, but I still get so worried. Sunday my friend wants us to come to her house for birthday cake, but I think I'm going to pass since Monday I'm going for a fill and with my luck the scale won't move I totally b*$#)!d the other day that I lost only 1.5 lbs in a week, when I looked back at my blog and read about all the crap I ate, 1.5 lb loss is actually pretty darn good. Pat on the back for me! I already planned out my meals for the next couple of weeks. For breakfast I found a Mexican Breakfast Casserole on the Allergan lap-band website. For lunch I'm going to make baked falafels, and make like a half sandwich with a sandwich thin, put a little hummus on there and lettuce and falafels. Dinner I'm going to try a recipe for general tso's tofu. Browsing these forums the other day, a member asked what the deal is the obsession with food post op? For me, it's not "oh my god I can't wait to try that" it's "wow this is healthy, it's high in protein and it's going to taste way better than the crap I used to eat" if that's a bad obsession, then I'm a bad person I used to eat in the cafeteria here at work all the time, and it was always bad things. Now I bring in my breakfast and lunch I save money, calories, and in the long run my health. The only time I go to the cafeteria is on Fridays and I always get my egg white omlette for breakfast and my tuna sandwich on a multi grain bread (which I can only eat half of lol). Anyway enough rambling, work has to be done, thanks so much for reading and the support on these forums, I hope myself and everyone else we can meet our goals one small (or large) pound at a time!

    Would you band twice?

My band slipped a few weeks ago due to a stomach virus and my ignorance of not getting unfilled. I am getting my band removed and replaced this Thursday. So, yeah...I am getting another. I believe the band is an incredible TOOL for weight loss. I am 3 years out from my original surgery. I have not reached my goal as I expected in this amount of time but it is still the best thing I have ever done for myself. I have been unfilled for a week and have had uncontrollable urges to eat like my prebanded years. I can not go back to that or I will be back to square one...and that isnt going to happen. You have to weigh the pros and cons and do what you feel is best for YOU. The new bands are supposed to be a lot better. My doc says they are supposed to be better against slipping and such. Talk to your doctor and discuss your fears. I told myself that if I fail with the 2nd band that I will consider a mini gastric bypass. I pray that will never have to be an option. Good luck to you and please keep us updated.
  19. It went really well. My wife was having a hard time sleeping comfortably so we asked for some medicine. They have her a very small amount of liquid to drink. No idea what it was. It was gross and made her nauseas. They said it was because she still has gas in her new little tummy so it was normal. She burped had some nausea medicine thru the iv and was sound asleep within minutes. She slept for a couple hours and then would have to pee.... That's how she is normally after surgery- she doesn't sleep and pees a lot. So every 2 hours we got up, peed, and walked. We got our roommate up and she walked with us too. My wife feels great today. Showered, dressing change, clean clothes, Etc. she is walking a lot which is really helping too. Support person note- I finally found a meal I really liked. Breakfast in the cafe downstairs is really good. Fresh fruit, fresh made omelette, potatoes and toast. It was really good. All for like $6 US. It was good. The nurses last night were just as good as the day and evening shift. They let you get some sleep too.... Lights turned down in halls and they were very quiet. My wife had an issue with her iv and they fixed it while She slept. They are having us move rooms which is no big deal at all... Right across the hall and now I will have a bed instead of a recliner thing and our roommates husband can stay the night tonight. When you are here there is a nurse. Her name is Sam. She is great. She will be having the surgery herself at the end of the month so if you are coming then you will miss her. But otherwise- she is a day shift nurse with light colored hair. She is awesome. We all love her. That's it for now. We did the first leak test and it went fine. My wife said it was gross but not that big of deal. You drink a small cup of contrast mixed with Water. She will be starting her trio of liquids in a couple hours- tea, Gatorade, and apple juice.

    Newbie here

my insurance didnt require any supervised weight loss like alot of insurances are requiring.
  21. For those who have been sleeved after your initial recovery from the surgery and subsequent weight loss did you start finding you had more energy for exercise or do you think just the motivation from knowing your going to lose finally give you that desire to start moving more. It's not that I am lazy by any means I go go go constantly. I just left my job of four years to help out my grandma (my grandpa died the day after christmas) and I am helping run her errands, my errands, cleaning her house, cleaning my house, doing her yard and doing my yard plus I have a hubby and two children. I just feel at this point like my efforts are futile I never seem to get lower then a certain point before I just say screw it and stop the routine. I can't stand walking on a treamill thinking of the million things I would rather be or should be doing. My doc thinks I am ADD. I think I am just a busy mom lol. So what I am really hoping that it will be like every time a start a new diet that i get that motivation and determination and since I hope to be seeing results it will keep me on the right track? Or am I just wishful thinking and the same work out demons that haunt me will be on my shoulder after surgery...please anyone good or bad let me know how it worked out for you.

    Finally lost 50lbs!

Happy 50 pound loss, that is a big deal. I am patiently waiting for mine but it is going slowly too.

    17lbs n a month

Honestly, when I saw the subject line of "17lbs in a month", I thought this was going to be a happy post. That's a great loss in just a month.....especially considering you have a fairly low starting weight. I'm not sure why you aren't happy about that loss. Finding the bright side is going to be a helpful thing for you over the long haul of this journey.

    Hey Ya'll

    Carbs?

I do eat low carb but I don't count them up. I more consider it a "healthy carb" type of eating. I eat my meats first, but I also add in my Fibers throughout the day as well. I try to never get less than 15g of Fiber per day - and the RDA is 18g. If that means I'm eating 60g of carbs per day then that's what it means. Really I think it more comes out to about 50g carbs per day. I do try to find options that are packed with fiber if I'm going to eat carbs. Once I'm able to eat more fruits and veggies (still working on post op eating) that will be where I get all my carbs from, while still ensuring I'm getting my RDA of fiber. Reasons I do this: * Regularity which is perfect right now. * I don't want to feel sluggish and tired all the time. * Hi fiber / Hi Protein diets prove to be the absolute best at satiety which so far is proving itself. * So far my losses have been really great. I really don't feel the need to shake anything up at all. As long as this is true, I will continue on with my current plan. However I really don't think I'll have any problems. My calories are low considering how active I am. I'm trying to lose weight and live my life at the same time. I don't want to be too overcome with diets and losing weight to where its all I think about all day. That's just me though! Whatever works for each individual person is what they should be doing. Not until you go through a stall of more than a month should you really become concerned and start finding alternatives to what you're doing. Usually it's just as simple as burning more calories throughout the day.
