  1. I'm sorry about your ex, Dibaby44. But I have to reiterate that marijuana is not physically addictive. He may have used it like he was an addict, and perhaps been mentally addicted. But it is not physically addictive like cigarettes, alcohol, or illegal drugs like meth, cocaine, or the such. There has also never been a reported incident of an overdose related death from marijuana use. It may affect someone's life in a negative way, and it does affect short term memory while you are smoking, however, those are supposedly reversible affects from the studies I've read. Anything used in excess can be harmful to ones life and their loved ones... and that part stinks for everyone involved. I'm not trying to be a huge proponent of smoking marijuana, but I've done a lot of research on marijuana use, and I know a lot of facts about it. I hate that people believe it's some kind of dangerous horrible drug. Personally, I believe the use of marijuana is much better an alcohol or cigarettes... and nowadays, particularly for medicinal use, there are far better ways to get the benefits rather than smoking it too. Autistic children are reaping benefits from the marijuana oils ingested in cookies/breads/etc. Now should a bariatric patient smoke after surgery? I have no idea. I do know my doctor is very adamant that smoking cigarettes can affect your stomach after surgery, so perhaps using the oils would be a better choice? And for the record, I don't partake in marijuana use. Why? Because it's illegal in the state I live in.

    Questions for Alcohol Drinkers ONLY!

Just wanted to update this post 5 months later. I still don't drink anywhere near as much as I use to prior to the surgery. But when I do go out and have a drink or two I have noticed that my tolerance has gotten a bit better. I still haven't gone back to my straight bourbon, whiskey, tequila shots. But mixed drinks, & wine coolers no longer get me immediately buzzed like they use to. I can take in about two to four drinks of those sort of alcoholic beverages before I feel anything now. Now keep in mind I sip on these things very slowly so one drink my last me 10 to 15 minutes. So if I'm out for two hours I may only have consumed up to 2 to 3 drinks max during that time frame. I'm not slamming them down like I'm in the dessert and dying of thirst. I'm also sure if I were to do the more harder stuff (whiskey, bourbon, tequila) I would feel it right away as if I was fresh off of surgery. I guess it just takes time for you to heal up and get somewhat of a tolerance back for it I guess. But I can totally see how it can become habit forming if your are getting buzzed drunk that quickly. You feel good, have not inhibitions to stop your good judgment, etc, etc. I still would totally advise on not doing it at least a good 8 - 12 months post surgery. And if you do go back to drinking, understand that what you could tolerate before and maybe even enjoyed, will indeed change. Be open up to trying new things a very very slow pace. And if at all possible have someone around you that can keep an eye on you to make sure you don't over do it. If you get buzzed drunk super quickly, you'll want someone around you that you can trust to stop you from continuing. Just my thoughts though.

    Alcohol, parties, fun?

I'm not a big drinker so it doesn't bother me too much to be missing out on alcohol for a bit but I do plan on drinking occasionally after my procedure. I will say I'm going to test my limits at home before going out to drink, as I've read alcohol can have a totally different effect on you post op and I will be mindful of how often i drink because transfer addiction is a real thing. So I would say have fun, sober or tipsy. Be mindful that you don't transfer your food addiction (if you have one) to alcohol.
  4. Hi - year on 3/16. I'm down from about 300 to 218 lbs. I haven't lost a pound since about Thanksgiving. I had my gall bladder out and was extremely addicted to Pain pills from about Sept 2015 to Jan 2016 when the docs stopped writing scripts. I was drinking a lot of alcohol and just gave up on eating regular food (Protein & veggies) and pretty much just lived on sweets and carbs. Maybe yogurt and milk in my coffee. Pretty pathetic. I'm in recovery now, and trying to really cut out carbs and refined sugar, eat more protein and Fiber (veggies and soluble fiber). I won't even go see my surgeon because I'm embarrassed. I don't exercise but my partner and I will be moving to a different city soon with access to jogging / biking trails right out our new house. Anyway, I hope it's not too late for me. I have not gained back but the "honey moon" phase is over. I can eat more than I used too when it comes to carbs. Oddly, they don't make me full, only when I eat meat is when I'm stuffed. I hate meat lol. But, back on track and getting healthy again. I'm seeing a counselor about my addictions and hope all of us 1 year anniversary gals who kinda just stopped losing short of our goals will persist and succeed! Prayers to you all.
  5. I know what you mean. I'm a bridesmaid in my sister's wedding in NOLA in June, three months post op to the day almost. I'm nervous, too. Im more so concerned about the alcohol restriction since this is a 3 day long extravaganza. I'll just have to pace myself with the shots. I already know I won't partake in any mixed drinks because of the sugar and cals. I'll just pick off the many meals that will be provided and have my high protein snacks in my purse. It sucks but I'll still have loads of fun.

    Alcohol, parties, fun?

not going to lie, I do happy hours now w/alcohol, I waited until 3 months post op to include it.. prior it was Water, tea or coffee .. zero beer's but a mascoto or zinfandel works just fine and sip on it for 2hrs. friends have commented how I drink my alcohol slower, but I tell them it helps with weight loss
  7. I have found that if you don't make a fuss and order something small and juat pick at it that nobody notices. People will notice if you have an empty plate or if you make a fuss. But just get an appetizer. Alcohol has never been an issue. I dont find it that hard not to drink. If there is social pressure to drink then get one drink and just nurse it all night, or get a drink without alcohol
  8. I went to a wedding in NOLA recently, so I know exactly what you'll be facing. Here's what I did, and it worked.... Don't drink alcohol, just like @@JamieLogical said. Not only is it unwise this close to surgery, but it's empty calories that can encourage you to make other bad choices. Don't eat carbs. This is your new lifestyle! And here's a little secret.... New Orleans food tastes even better when the flavor isn't diluted by rice or Pasta. I order gumbo, red Beans, shrimp creole, and my favorite, crawfish etoufee without the rice, and it's fantastic!!! Try the etoufee at "The Gumbo Shop" in the Quarter. At the wedding, there will probably be a buffet. Just put Protein (meat and beans) on your plate and nothing else. If you're still hungry, go back for some green vegetables. By then you'll be stuffed. Don't eat the cake or dessert. Sorry. Just don't. The sooner we break our addiction to sugar, the easier the rest of the journey will be. Have blast, and feel proud about making good choices. That's much better than the guilt you will feel if you make poor decisions. And if anyone tries to pressure you to eat or drink something you shouldn't.... Just thank them for their concern, but you're eating more healthfully now. And dance like the slender person you'll soon be! Good luck! You can do this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  9. I wouldn't recommend drinking at all. I was told no alcohol until 3 months post-op. You might want to consult with your doctor or nutritionist if you weren't already given specific guidelines. As for eating, if you are on solids by then, it shouldn't be too bad. Pick high Protein choices from the appetizer menu or share an entree with someone. When in doubt you could always go with something like chili.

    Alcohol, parties, fun?

I mean this in the kindest way possible, but if waiting 6 months to drink is impossible and 4 months is realistic, I highly recommend you talk with a counselor or therapist. It may just be because you are young, but alcohol dependence is a very serious thing, and it is very easy to become dependent on other substances or activities post-WLS if there are still unresolved underlying food, eating, or other issues. Choosing to have one drink on occasion once your surgeon has cleared you is one thing, but white knuckling it until you just can't take it is another. I do hope you find that you can have fun and be social without alcohol. It is a choice and not a requirement.

    Alcohol, parties, fun?

I'm not understanding the connection between not drinking and "losing your social life". Why can't you go out with your friends and have a good time without having alcohol in your glass?
  12. Fat: 1 gram = 9 calories Protein: 1 gram = 4 calories Carbohydrates: 1 gram = 4 calories Alcohol: 1 gram = 7 calories Alcohol is second only to Fat in calories per gram, and is quickly absorbable. Like @@con con said, alcoholic drinks contain a lot of empty calories, along with the potential to bring on poor judgment. It's your business what you do in regards to alcohol consumption, but I pretty much swore it off back in 1988 when I first learned the above facts. I haven't gone completely dry, but I can count on one hand how many alcoholic drinks I have in a year. My view is that I have enough trouble controlling caloric intake from food without compounding the problem with alcohol.

    Questions for Alcohol Drinkers ONLY!

QUESTIONS: 1. How long did you go before having your first drink? - I am only 3 weeks out - plan to wait 6 months so I can avoid those carbs during this maximum weight loss time. 2. Have you had any MEDICAL complications with your surgery that were attributed to drinking alcohol? no 3. Have you gained back significant weight from drinking alcohol? no - abstaining for now. 4. Have you developed an alcohol addiction post VSG after having been able to control your drinking before? I have asked hubby to watch me for this issue, as I know he will give me good feedback. I was an occasional drinker, wine and whiskey are my favs. and I collect wines from the Old Mission Peninsula. I sure hope I tolerate it well once I am back on the sauce. I typically had 3 glasses a month, so not every weekend, more than once a month.
  14. I waited 4 months to have my first drink, then it was several months until I had another. Even now at 18 months out, it's very occasionally that I imbibe. Can't do beer at all anymore (booo!) because the bubbles are just too much. I do love wine and a vodka and cranberry when I do drink socially. I count the calories and always make sure I'm well hydrated, but even then I always see a gain when I drink. My body apparently hates it, lol. That's one of the reasons why I don't do it very often. But when you're cleared to drink alcohol, I would try to steer clear as much as you can in the losing phase, as it may slow your loss down.

    Alcohol, parties, fun?

I guess it's all about importance. I have zero interest in drinking. It's baseless calories with no nutritional value. You can still socialize without consuming alcohol.
  16. For me so far, the hardest part of this journey is not being able to drink. I did a 2 week pre op diet where alcohol was not allowed and am 3 weeks out now. So it's been almost 2 months since I last drank. I never considered myself a big drinker but could always handle a lot ( probably due to my weight). I'm 25 and have a lot of friends who still go to bars on weekends. I am starting to feel I'm losing touch with my social life because I'm not able to do those things yet. How long did everyone wait before trying a drink? Did you get sick? Sent from my SM-G530T using the BariatricPal App
  17. I was just surprised at even in my pre-op testing, or in getting my clearances, or even when I had my surgery was there ever a concern and even in reading all of my test results the numbers seems normal. I did look at my labs after my surgery and see that there is a difference though as the absorption rates change and though I've changed my diet/lifestyle for the past 9 months it will get better. I did talk to a specialist that mentioned this is normal for a short period after surgery which is why they say to avoid alcohol and all of the fatty foods we shouldn't be eating in anyway. The liver has to work in overtime a bit due to the change in diet and until we are "normalized" per se, that will remain the case with the liver. Thank you for the information and i'm glad I am not alone in this.... everything else has been good, I was just surprised by this but I suppose it is a learning process for me just as much as it is for me PCP as well as he doesn't have many patients who've had WLS surgery. I did start Biotin and Vitamin D3 though. So hopefully that will help some as well.
  18. Could be all the artificial sweeteners and sugar alcohols in the SF stuff. I know I couldn't tolerate artificial sweeteners at all and a lot of people have problems with sugar alcohols causing diarrhea. If it continues, call your surgeon or PCP. You don't want to get dehydrated and they may want to check for C. diff. What you describe is how mine started.

    Feb 23 Sleevers!

I am on a PPI too. I forget to take it sometimes. I'm not hungry really, but I slowly progressed myself to purees and some soft foods over the weekend. sugar free stuff made with a sugar alcohol called sorbitol can have laxative effects. Sorbitol is actually what makes prune juice so effective because it has very high levels of sorbitol in it. I like Isopure, but it's not very sweet. I have to be very careful with the protien shakes because I'm lactose intolerant so I have to make sure it's a protien isolate. Otherwise it'll make me very sick. So I'm probably not the best for advice on those im down 14lbs now. I went about 3 days without losing. But I'm back to dripping weight again. My other half noticed I was losing weight about a week ago (he's very detail oriented) and it's actually freaking him out. He said the only people he knows who dropped weight so quickly was very sick and died. Even though he logically knows it's not that, he still gets weirded out about it. Yeah sometimes acid pains can mimic hunger pain. You're probably feeling weak and tired because you haven't had much calories. Thats probably going to change once you get progressed to the next stage at your next doctors appointment.

    Calories Don't Matter?

Lost 100 pounds. No idea what my macros are. Don't count, don't measure, don't track. Never have. I keep a running tally of fluids in my head and typically drink 80-100oz. I have a Protein shake and Quest bar everyday which gives me 40-50g protein. Then I eat 5-6 times/day....mostly high fat/high protein things, but I do include a little fruit and non starchy veggies every day. And of course my fiber. I occasionally indulge in Desserts, candy, alcohol, bread, and rice, etc but it's certainly not an everyday thing. I'm one of "those" people who had surgery so I wouldn't HAVE to diet and measure and track everything I eat. If I wanted to do that I could have saved my $7000 and joined weight watchers instead.

Long Term Results of Sleeve Gastrectomy

Some of us are still here wanting to get others to learn from their bad experiences and never see it happen to any one else. Paying it forward. Surgeons who say they'll mark up your records to interfere with your doctors' caring for you and blocking care should never ever happen. It did in my case. I investigated and found a lot of covering up both in administration and in doctors and the govt. That's why i stay around. No one deserves this - and the only way to stop it to post things like the tape where the doctor talked about me to someone off the street. When you see docs like that, that is why you need to ask questions. Get someone who doesn't do that sort of thing. Help others out of that situation. Hey I resent that! 22. How are you feeling? What are you eating? How are you sleeping? Do you use a Cpap? Have you had any acid reflux? I want to know everything about everyone, lol! =) Feel great...down 55lbs, 2 shirt sizes and 3 pant sizes. Not bad for a month. I sleep longer than I used to...I need about 9 hours to feel energized. I've never needed a cpap. The acid feeling is weird, I don't help it because I have indulged with the occasional cocktail...is what it is though. Thank you! I sleep better as well, so odd because before surgery I had so much trouble. I hope this part continues! I got a wedge pillow to sleep on to raise my head, I'd try that at night for sure if you haven't yet. I haven't had alcohol in a 3 months now. Really ... and I never liked hard alcohol or wine, I only like good beer. But I can't have the fuzz nor the alcohol. Yet? O.o
  23. As many have said before me, there are several straws that have broken my camels back. For me it is just being tired of being tired & feeling like crap all the time. I have three German Shepherds that I would love to walk but there is too much pain in my back and hips to tolerate it. I have recently discovered the restaurant booth issue. I have always been the one to ask for a booth because they are more comfortable. Not anymore!! Not only are they not comfortable but when I look across at my husband and see that he has a huge amount of room between him and the table even after I pushed the table over, is ridiculous. I have also recently discovered Facetime which is awesome because I get to see my daughter while I am talking to her but ugh, why do I have to see myself as well! I despise having my picture taken and for some reason, people who are not obese do not seem to understand that. I have been outright rude sometimes to avoid it & have had to practically beg to not have my picture shared on facebook. I don't want to be that person anymore. I am tired of having to sit on a stool to fix dinner or do dishes. I am tired of having to take breaks when I am cleaning house. I have been in denial for way too long. I have used food and alcohol to avoid dealing with myself. I am ready to find a way to love myself. I was actually just recently promoted at work. I was completely blown away by this promotion because of my self-image issues, I didn't think I had a chance. I started my WL journey in Dec 2015 and am not looking back. I believe that 2016 will be my year to shine. I am half way through my 6 month diet/exercise program and have the sleep study in May. After that I will hopefully be scheduled for surgery in July. I have read this entire feed and I am so grateful for everyone's input. A lot of what has been said really hits home for me & I wish you all the best of luck in your WL journey.
  24. I went on a cruise in January and I was 6 months post-op. Like the previous posters have said, eating really was a non-issue! I liked that there was always some sort of buffet going on, because on my plan I am supposed to eat 5-6 times daily. So for the mid-morning and mid-afternoon times where the main dining wasn't open, it was easy to go get some chicken, fish, or shrimp from a buffet. For the dining room meals, I never had anyone comment on my eating patterns. I think they're used to picky eaters, as well as the people who will eat enough for 3+ people, so nothing seems all that weird to them! My tip: Make use of that gym and the walking/jogging track and any other activities that you can! And for the excursions, pick the walking/hiking/kayaking/etc. ones. It really was a whole new type of vacation for me, actually welcoming the more physical activities instead of dreading them. Enjoy your cruise. I'm a semi-frequent cruiser, and this most recent one was my favorite because I looked better, felt better, and was in total control of myself. I certainly splurged a little (dessert here and there, my first alcoholic beverages since surgery), but still came back and lost 1 pound that week! It was amazing.
