Questions about water and protein shakes.
Ruby Woo replied to Tssiemer1's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Protein intake does not count as water/hydration intake. You must take in atleast 60-70 grams of protein per day, and also a minimum of 64 oz of water. Broth, and sugar free Popsicles are considered hydration. Yogurt and protein shakes are absolutely not considered fluid intake. I know it's hard but you must sip both protein shake and water all day. Also FYI and fore anyone else who doesnt know the Isopure flavored liquid protein doesn't count as hydration. Isopure is liquidy but is 100% pure protein and has no water in it. -

My NUT told me that Protein shakes, and yogurt for that matter, can be included in towards Fluid intake. I was not told to wait after drinking shakes to drink Water. -
Getting Sleeved On The 16Th! A Few Questions For Those Who Have Been Already...:)
monalisa1010 replied to alexandra noelle's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was sleeved Jan 24th at 7 AM. I also had hernia repair at the time of my surgery. I woke up with very very little pain. It's more like muscle soreness from doing too many sit ups. I didnt take pain meds until bedtime (because I wanted to be able to sleep, not so much because of the pain). I was more concerned with Nausea & not pain ( I had never had any type of surgery - NOTHING ) I had no nausea at all - still havent. I am still on full liquids and pudding, yogurt. cheese, very soft foods. Your belly button will probally be sore - Everyone is different, but I really cant imagine a large amount of pain - but I know it's possible. Walk as soon as your allowed, to get rid of gas. The gas pressure is what I really dealt with for a few days. Also bring a small travel pillow with you for the drive home, put the pillow against your stomach then put on your seatbelt. This helps ALOT, bring that pillow with you everytime your in the car. Dont wear any pants that button or zip, only elastic waist. Getting in and out of the bed is a slight struggle. Prop up about 3-4 pillows againts your headboard - getting out of your bed from a upright position is alot less painfull than from a laying down position. If your bed/mattress is high up - have a small step stool next to your bed to help getting in and out. Also, sleep with as many pillows as you can to keep your head in the upright position in order to not have acid reflux - This helps me alot. Feel free to ask any other questions ! I promise this surgery will be alot easier than you expect (if I had to - I'd do it again) Follow all of the rules, dont skip ahead on your diet & dont lift anything heavy , you never want to risk a leak !!! -
Protein shake, can't stand it!
PlannerGirl replied to HeresKimmy's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
I've been loving my Unjury protein. I found the best price at Amazon.com I like the chocolate mixed with skim milk or plain yogurt. I also am adding the unflavored to most everything. Try it, it's good. -
mainly for changing up the flavor of your protein shakes. but I've also seen some people mix a little into plain greek yogurt to give it some flavor (haven't tried it yet, but plan to). amazon has tons of flavors but I found them cheapest (and good price on shipping too) on a restaurant supply site called webstaurant.com . While the site is intended for restaurant supply they will ship to a residential address.

what post op 1-5 year diets look like
tcotheran83 replied to R4TNM's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I am 2 years post-op. I have lost a total of 130lbs. It does become harder after the 1st year to lose weight. I do 2 hours of working out 6 days a week and I still have stalls and even gain sometimes. I can tolerate eating just about any food now, but I always make protein the first thing. After the 1st year portion size becomes very important. Stay away from greasy food and foods that are high in carbs. I stick with protein shakes, greek yogurt, chicken breast, cheese sticks, and veggies. When I want to have a little snack I choose fruit or nuts. I hope this helps answer some questions. Use your surgery as a tool and enjoy your new body! -
protein, and amount of food
Cheer Mama replied to cmathews77's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I eat teaspoon of yogurt and cottage cheese. Some times I sprinkle a little bit of non-flavored Protein on top for a little bit of extra protein. I also a do soft scrambles egg. I couple this with my Protein drinks. I totally appreciate the disgust with your protein drinks! Now that I'm adding some real food into the mix, I find that the shakes aren't so bad. -
Definitely not a piece of cake- 1 month post-op
ms.k posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi All! Before I start, I would just like to advise readers that this post is being written just to get some things off my chest. Please do not criticize or judge... because this past month has been stressful to say the least. A little background, I had my surgery on June 26, starting weight on first visit was 207, surgery day I weighed 195, and 1 1/2 weeks ago I weighed 181. I do not have a scale in my house because I don't want to get into the habit of stressing about loosing pounds, so I weigh myself at my grandmother's house every 1-2weeks. The day after surgery I was released from the hospital, no complications or problems, and I did not take any pain meds from that point on, which I am very proud of. I really wasn't in much pain at all, and I'd rather have the little bit of pain then have my stomach get upset from the pain pill, so I opted not to take them. I am very happy with the weight I have lost so far, as my old clothes are fitting me very nicely, and when I shop not I don't have to shop in the plus size section!!! I am, on the other hand very upset at myself for not working hard enough to get the required fluids and protein in. (as I am literally wiping tears from my face because this is how upset it makes me) I really don't know what my problem is, maybe depressed cause whenever I think about it the tears just start flowing. But anyway, I know I can do better, the motivation just isn't there.... and this really bothers me because I DON'T WANT TO LOSE MY HAIR!!!! So mad cause I know by not getting the required nutrition I am not putting myself in a good position to be healthy. On a good day I will get 20 or so oz of liquids and proteins, ha! maybe 10-20 a day.... I know, I'm not doing this right!! Again, PLEASE don't bash!!! I've been going to sonic daily to get slushees, cause I am able get those down with no problem, but that's like 20 oz... and I also try flavored water, and sometimes can drink a bottle, but that's about it.... I also eat greek yogurt with 2x's the protein, chicken, cheese, and anything else I can with protein in it cause, though I love the taste of the protein shake I have... I struggle getting 1 20g bottle down. BTW, Core Power, strawberry banana is delish!! So, these are my stresses. Just venting, and don't mean any harm, just wanted to get it out. Oh, before I end this, just want to add that I am on regular food. I eat maybe 3 times a day, love string cheese, tried pizza 1 time and it went fine, now no problems with any food I have eaten so far... Good luck to all of you!!! -
Blue cheese dip Puree 1 cup low fat cottage cheese, 1 cup low fat yogurt, and 4 oz. crumbled blue cheese. Add a dash of onion salt and Worcestershire sauce and mix. If you want, you can add a dash of Tabasco too. According to MFP, it's approx 158 calories, 6 carbs and 14 G Protein.

I am so sorry to hear of your sincere stress...I can really feel into it!! But I tell myself all the time ...the sooner I just accept what I need to do to lose the weight and stay healthy the better off I will be, mentally and physically. I know it sounds maybe a little tough thinking, but it what I tell my self!! I like to eat Nonfat Cottage cheese...1/2 cup @ 80 Cal and 16 grams of Protein!!!! I usually eat 1 cup ....so I get in 32 grams of Protein!! And, nonfat Greek lite yogurt, strawberry or blueberry flavors @ 90 Cal and 16 grams of protein!! Hope it gets better for you! -
3 weeks post-operative, solid food hurts!
Marc A. Fellman posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgeon told me that I should start eating soft foods at this point. But, most of the time when I try something other than liquid (or yogurt, pudding, shake), it feels like there is a painful rock filling up my stomach. I had some french onion Soup which really just had pieces of boiled onion in it and a soggy crouton, but it hurt. I also tried thoroughly chewing a couple bites of toast. Same thing. I also have some nausea but haven't actually thrown up. So my question is whether this could be a stricture? Or is it just my stomach is particular sensitive and I need to let heal longer? Oddly, I've been able to eat some string cheese without a problem, but that's about it. So, I'm really hoping it's not a stricture. -
Feeling No Restriction Had Vsg June 7Th
MinaT replied to hope2bfree's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well I had surgery June 4th and I'm still on liquids. You are saying you hope you have not gone through all of this for nothing...Are you keeping track on myfitnesspal.com of how many calories and how much Protein, carbs & liquid you are getting in? Are you eating as much as you would before surgery? Have you lost anything at all? I imagine you have lost some weight, so any pounds lost is not a failure. It is up to you to not put the wrong food in your mouth still and by looking at what you are eating, you are doing what you are suppose to be doing. The sleeve is a tool. You are lucky you aren't feeling sick or restrictions by eating those foods. But you are mentioning 2 ounces of tuna. That's not a lot. A Greek Yogurt, again not a lot. If you ate a scrambled egg, a hardboiled egg 2 ounces of tuna and a greek yogurt, all at once, then you got some sort of issue there to worry about and then you should be worrying about the restriction issue. Eating one of these at a time without drinking for at least 1/2 hour afterwards, and you are doing great is wonderful. Take this time while you are just learning to eat to chew your food and maybe stop worrying about what restrictions you should be feeling. After being on the diet roller coaster for as long as you have been, you know what you should and shouldn't be eating, and you know how much is too much. Trust me, try eating 2 hardboiled eggs and cottage cheese and the restriction will hit you like a two ton heavy thing and you will realize the truth of the sleeve. (don't try to eat 2 hardboiled eggs at once..I was being facetious. I think you are doing well. I went from 330-128 and then gained it back. We both know what the issues is, we need to keep on moving....a lot and we need to up our protein, keep lower carbs and most of this is still mental. Try some positive thoughts and maybe someone else will have more advise for you. Good luck -
Feeling No Restriction Had Vsg June 7Th
Newfoundlove replied to hope2bfree's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I didn't feel any restriction at first with the small amounts of food either. Same with yogurt, which is sort of like a liquid - I don't get restriction with that 1/4 cup equals two ounces so that's not that much food, but my NUT had me on 1/4th cup to start for the first week or so and then gradually increasing to 1/2 cup. She doesn't want me to eat any more than 3/4 cup of food total at any meal. I would imagine, however, that once you graduate up to a larger quantity, maybe even at 1/2 cup of something (not liquid), you will feel the restriction. Believe me, you'll know it when you feel it. The foods you are eating are not very dense either so they will process better (at least for most people they do). I could probably eat a whole cup of cottage cheese, but I don't because of the carb content in that food, so I keep it at 1/2 cup which still gives me plenty of protein. I also eat it for a snack instead of with a meal. But that's just me. I believe that the first true restriction that I felt was with grilled tilapia. Even though it is soft, I tried to a fairly nice size piece and about 3/4 through, wham, I got this tightening in my stomach and I burped. For me burping is the signal that I am through. Everyone has their own way of knowing when they should finish by the change in their body. You'll figure this out as time goes on. I can tell you that the "one bite too many" feeling is not pleasant, so maybe you'll be fortunate and not have that happen. You are doing everything right by following the plan your doctor has you on at just over two weeks out, so don't worry if you're not feeling restriction yet. Good luck! -
Problems Finding Foods I Like Post Op 1 Month
MegInNOLA replied to wickedmijagabby's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I can't eat most meat or chicken now, either. Beans are my friend. Try Greek yogurt for great Protein. I also really liked soups--try some Soup that you zap in the blender (it will eliminate the chunks of chicken or whatever in there)--favs for me included broccoli/cheese, chicken/veggie, and lemon/chicken/orzo, all zapped to smooth texture. You might also get some hot and sour soup at a Chinese restaurant and add extra tofu for more protein... Don't worry about eating small amounts. That's normal at first. Your capacity will increase as your sleeve heals. Hang in there! -
Surgery 2 Days Ago
kahlualouie replied to Fourstarmom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had surgery about 2.5 weeks ago. Gas X greatly helped with the bubbly stomach. I still take it. I've also had to take two different PPI's. Post op day 3 I thought I was going to die. I was having extreme nausea and couldn't tolerate any cold or room temperature water. Everything had to be heated up and then I ended up on Reglan. So now, I'm almost 3 weeks. I feel quite a hot better and still on full liquids. My program added bananas, peanut butter, and applesauce this week. Previously, I've been doing the protein shakes, Greek yogurt, strained creamy soup, jello and pudding. Next week I get scramble eggs, potatoes , oatmeal, cream of wheat, cottage cheese. I cannot wait for Tuesday! It will gat better. I questioned myself in whether or not I did the right thing. Still do, but I think that is normal. -
I think it depends on the environment you work in. I work from home, so obviously not an issue. Some people, like those who work in nursing or retail, may have rules against drinking/eating while on duty. In this case, it's best to talk to HR or a manager about getting a doctor's note to allow them to eat/drink while working. After surgery, it's not possible to eat and drink quickly, and you will need to sip all day to get your fluids in. If you have an active or outdoors job, it's even more important to be drinking a lot. I'm not sure why a smoothie in particular would be difficult to drink at work, although you'd have to have someplace to wash the container so it doesn't get gross. I assume you would make it at home? Probably for the first few weeks/months a smoothie wouldn't be the best bet as it's too much fiber and not enough protein; a protein shake is better for that (personally I can only tolerate the premade kind because the ones make with powder always seem gritty to me). I also am eating a lot of yogurt; maybe you will need a small lunch bag/box that is insulated and some ice packs which you can buy cheaply on Amazon.

I agree with Jen. I was on clear liquids for 2 weeks with the exceptions of protein shakes, milk and lumpfree yogurt. He said that protein was imperative to proper healing.

Problem With Protein Shakes
Buffalogyrl replied to Scooby_Who's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Me too! I'm doing Greek yogurt and tofu and I feel like a new woman! -
I was eating pretty much everything on my week 5 but very slowly and little portion. I can't drink another protein shake. These are my favorite protein foods: 2 eggs (12 g each) so that's 24g Yogurt 13 g Can of Tuna 25 g cup of pumpkin seeds 12 g Try the multivitamin gummies. I heard they work if you are having a hard time swallowing.

cakelly73 replied to StewsHunnyBunny's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yea, wow is right! so much for a support group! @ StewsHunnyBunny, I was also banded 8/31, I was on liquids for 1 week, and then started the pureed yesterday after my 1 week post op visit with my Dr. i was very excited to have lost 15 lbs so far! I cannot bring myself to stuff food in a blender yet, so im just sticking to yogurt, mashed potatoes, soups, and shakes. Each Dr. is different with what they want you to do, you are ready for the mushies now, so go ahead and enjoy those eggs! Oh and i feel all those pains and weird things you mentioned too, my Dr. said its normal. Good Luck! -

NY Bandster replied to StewsHunnyBunny's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi, I had my band placed on September 1st. I had my postop appt today and explained to the dietician that I am SUPER HUNGRY. She spoke with the doctor and they both agreed to let me add Greek Yogurt to my Protein shakes to thicken them up. They want their patients on the liquid for 2 full weeks. The dietician did mention to me that a previous MD that she worked with allowed puree at 10 days. I don't think you will have any problems if you stay with truly pureed foods and you don't over do it!! Good luck! Stacy
