  1. Is it possible? Yes. Is it likely? No. And even if you do lose it, you said yourself you have a lack of willpower. You would need to make solid, permanent dietary and lifestyle changes. Can you do that, and maintain it, on your own? And if so, why haven't you done it before now? I've lost weight several times, but I wasn't able to keep it off. Are you thinking about surgery because you have health concerns? Do you have comorbidities? Or is it just because you want to lose weight and drop a size or 2? Will you follow the bariatric diet to the letter and make all of the lifestyle changes that will be required? The surgery is a tool. And it's absolutely not easy at all to change your mindset, your relationship with food, and your eating habits. You have to go into it ready and willing to do everything required to improve your health and life. Surgery or not, you have to be ready for that. Can you say that you are?

    Vaginal bleeding after surgery?

Could be an oestrogen surge. Oestrogen is stored in fat & as you lose weight it is released into your blood stream & general messes your usual cycle up. Heavier or lighter periods, more or less frequent cycles, more or fewer PMT symptoms & for you maybe a breakthrough bleed. All very common. I’m menopausal & all my symptoms went away. It was wonderful. Unfortunately, they all came back when my weight lost slowed & I was close to goal.
  3. Some people can do it without surgery. Unfortunately, I was not one of them. Like the others, I would lose weight, only to regain it, and more each time. One thing that you will see in these threads are people saying they wish they did it sooner. I am one of those as well. I wish I didn't put it off. I wish I did it in my 30s, it would have saved me years of frustration and pain, mentally, emotionally and physically. I guess that's why I am sharing my thoughts with you. I wish someone sat me down then and told me that I needed help, that it was only going to get worse. Instead, they just kept telling me "just don't eat so much". No one in my family understood overweight people. To them, it was simple but not to me. It still isn't. I still have to work on it every day. WLS saved my life in so many ways. If you do decide to do it without surgery, it would probably be helpful getting a therapist to help you with your relationship to food and to be successful.
  4. I too have lost weight many, many times but every single time I put the weight back on. So can you lose weight without surgery? Yes. The real question is can you keep it off. I always went back to eating the same way as soon as a diet was over so of course I put the weight back on. I also messed up my metabolic rate by doing those very low calorie diets too many times & practising meal skipping to ‘manage’ my weight. The surgery gave me time to change everything about what, why & when I ate, my habits & whole relationship with food. It was the best thing I ever did. I lost all my weight & more & have pretty much maintained that weight. Has it restricted my life in any way? No. Now some truths about weight loss surgery. The average weight loss after bypass or sleeve surgery is about 65% of the weight you have to lose to put you in a healthier weight range. Some lose less & some more. A lot of this is because of the new set point the surgery gives you (the new weight your body is happiest at & is easiest to maintain). Everyones set point is different & it may not be a low weight. Some lose less because a higher weight & new eating style better complements them & how they want to live their life. It may be because of age, gender, genetics, health issues, medications, personal choices, complacency, life events, bounce back regain, etc. The long term success of the surgery depends upon you & the changes you make to your eating, relationship with food & the head work you need to do to understand & manage those factors. It certainly is worth a conversation with the surgeon & then you will be better informed to make your decision. In the end, you are the only one who truely knows your self, your situation & lifestyle & your weight loss/gain history. All the best whatever you decide.
  5. Thank you sigh, how did you lose the weight the first time?
  6. Hi Helena- welcome. Do i think you could lose the weight in a year? Yes, I have done that several times in my lifetime. But the weight always came back once I returned to eating carbs with no restraint. I am 52 now and just had the surgery in early March— with a goal to lose 65 lbs. I just couldn’t stand being that heavy again- and am tired of fighting it alone. I see the VSG as a tool to help me get to my health goals. While it may be a bit quicker, I still think it will be tougher to reach those lower ranges again— but my health will be better for it. No more “A1C1 markers being close to pre-diabetes”, no more (or hopefully less) strain on my feet and knees due to extra weight, no more feeling like a penguin. Surgery is NOT fun, but it wasn’t terrible. I have had many, this was my fourth in a year. I missed one day of work- that’s it. Ive already lost close to 25lbs- 12 before surgery and the rest since 3/3. This was a jump start on a healthier life— you can take a different path, and I know you could get there either way. Just make the right decision for you and your body. Good luck!

    3 weeks post op

I pretty much eat the same exact things. I had miso soup today and a 3oz piece of grilled chicken plus protein shakes, yogurt and decaf tea. At 3 weeks post I feel like I can eat. I also have not lost anymore weight this week. Thinking I should try and stick to liquids only for another week.
  8. Firstly hi all, I'm new here. My name is Helena. Just a little backdrop - I'm 37 years old, from the UK. I'm 5'9 and weigh 270lbs/20 stone. I talked to my local doctor recently about getting weight loss surgery and then I few weeks later I suddenly get a letter through telling me that an appointment has been booked with a bariatric surgeon in a few months time! If I'm approved I will be getting the surgery done on the NHS which means I essentially don't have to pay for it. That sounds like a blessing. But of course now I'm freaking out, being the massive coward I am I have been binge watching vlogs and from everything I'm hearing - whilst the end result is great - I don't know if I want to or even if I CAN go through the operation. For many reasons. Firstly I have never been operated on. I've never had children so don't know what childbirth or a c section feels like. I've been pretty blessed, aside from a herniated disc I had a few years ago, I've managed to live a pretty pain free life. The second thing might sound a little bit selfish but in my 30s I grew to accept myself as a bigger person. Whilst I hate the size that I am I feel like I don't really care about getting down to my ideal bmi and that I would be perfectly happy being 220lbs or if I'm really lucky 200lbs (I told you, thats gonna sound selfish). I can live with a heavier me. Ideally I just want to lose some weight. But by some I don't mean 10lbs, enough so that I can lose a few dress sizes. Many years ago I lost just one dress size and felt amazing, so much more confident. But that was in my 20s and achieved from pretty much a starvation diet (about 700-800 calories a day, only lasted a few weeks and of course eventually put it all back on). I won't be able to do a starvation diet in my 30s, don't have the willpower now. So I want to keep the surgery option as my last, last, LAST option (without sounding ungrateful) but so far all the success stories I've heard of people who have lost roughly 50lbs-70lbs or more is that it was achieved through some sort of surgery. Do you honestly think its achievable to lose the weight naturally within a year (I need to lose it within a year) or do you think I should just prepare myself for the surgery?? Sorry if you think its a stupid question, I'm just kinda lonely with no one else to really turn to so I kinda need to get this off my chest. If you think it can be achieved naturally could you tell me what diet/weight loss plan I should opt for? Thank you for listening x
  9. I have an Etekcity bathroom scales that charts weight, BMI, etc. I weight every morning, I feel it gives me an immediate insight as to things I did or didn't do appropriately: such as, did I have too much salt, did I drink enough water, did I get enough protein, what was my calorie count, and after surgery bathroom visits change a lot. I have had stalls, and increases, of course, but I think just being mindful works for me. Best wishes to everyone!

    March VSG 2023

I had my VSG & hiatal hernia repair March 7th. I had no gas pain, brief nausea on day 1 coming off anesethia, and have been doing well. My first week I didn't have much hunger (I was very weak and tired, and also on my cycle). About day 4/5 post-op, I started feeling hungry; liquids don't offer a lot of satiety. At my 1 week follow-up, my surgeon approved me to move onto soft foods, to take vitamins, and to not have to crush pills. Their goal is between 700-800 calories, and today (so far) I have met 700. Soft foods are tolerated great, though eggs sit a little heavier in my stomach. I'm surprised at myself. I didn't think I'd be able to eat or drink this much (50oz water today; average 8 - 10 cups). I'm down 22 pounds, but I feel a little worried that I'm doing too well. I'm scared of eating too much and stalling weight loss. :( I feel conflicted, like I should be happy and energized, but I'm mostly anxious.

    Endoscopic revision

@smiles_so_luvly how much weight have you lost so far if you don’t mind md asking and do you feel a restriction and get full easily?
  12. I also experienced a two week stall right after surgery. It’s heartbreaking, I had many doubts, I constantly wonder if I was doing something wrong. Mostly I was concerned about experiencing constipation pre op I was always regular but now I was having a movement every 3 days. That was hard and concerning for me. I tried taking more fiber in any way possible. Finally at the start of my fourth week post op things were moving along easier. Once that happen I started to see my weight move as well. I’m a little more relief now I do focus on my water, fiber, protein and getting more steps in. That seems to have help with my two issues. I am not losing weight not as fast as others but I’m ok, just trying to focus on the process.
  13. I had a lapband in 2011. I lost 225lb and in 2021 I had it removed r/t complications. I was too small for a revision at 123lb so I had no help and I have gained over 100lbs back from yo yo dieting. I am now approved for the sleeve so hopefully this works. Please let me know your success. Since I am going down a similar path soon.

    Weight gain

This week I had two consecutive lunches that were very, very salty. I gained a pound each day. In my case its just water. It will slowly disappear. You will get used to these little fluctuations. I log all my foods and know my calories and protein every day. I therefore know I am always in a calorie deficit. It really helps
  15. Is it okay to drink vitamin water? I tried the sonic water flavor packets that way and it taste much better. You should definitely try it this summer 🙂 I dont either. Its so hard. But I know right? The my ounces went up by 7 ounces. Frustrating! Maybe not eat my last meal so late. Probably my issue as well. I have a weight watchers scale. I can't wait to start going to the gym! I plan on starting at week 5. I have a friend who agreed to go with me 3 times a week. Things should hopefully move better right? I'm only going to start with walking and the bike. Then each week increase the time by 10 minutes. Once I get cleared to do other exercises, I plan on 30 minutes of cardio then whole body workouts on the machines. Eventually increase cardio up to 45 minutes then whatever time it takes to do the other workouts. I have a fitbit watch that I should start using too. Yay! That's awesome! How much are you down so far since surgery?

    February 2023 surgery dates!

Oooh no I've never tried it that way! I'll have to remember that in the summer time. I know some people do better with avoiding the scale, but I do not 😩. I weigh myself at the same time everyday and every little 0.1lb movement is encouraging to keep going. My scale doesn't list ounces, but it does go to the 1/10th pound, so I do track it like that. I have a garmin scale so everytime I weigh it syncs to my app so I have all my activity tracking from my watch and my weight progress in the same spot. After a week of very little scale movement, it dropped 2 lbs this morning so I think I'm over the stall! I'm cleared for working out so I've just started back in the gym last week and I added some jogging in yesterday as well so I think that will help keep things moving more than just walking or biking.
  17. It really is weird. Like I love the ricotta cheese in our lasagna, I made the ricotta bake the same way, it's definitely not the same. Then I made buffalo dip and that's not the same either, it's good, but now the texture gags me lol. I can't stand gatorade zero anymore, well the one that I like, I'm gonna try orange. Going grocery shopping later and craving an orange flavor. The fruit punch is really strong, I have to do the same thing. I think im gonna try making a slushy with it later to see if I like it that way with a lot of ice. Have you tried it that way? I had no soreness or pain really. Glad you feel better! The stage I'm on is puree/soft foods. What exactly is considered soft foods? I'm really craving pickles and cucumbers. Next stage is soft solids. I figured out that pudding mixed in with cool whip doesn't sit good or Kodiak pancake in a cup lol I know it's too early for that. That's probably why, but im gonna still avoid it. Shrimp sounds really good too lol. I think im at the 3 week stall as well. Do you count the ounces too? Well the ounces keep moving but that is it. It's frustrating and it's hard to avoid the scale. Weight was dropping, now it stopped. But how? We're not eating much.

    Weight gain

unless you've eaten an extra 10,500 calories this week, that "gain" is either water or intestinal contents (i.e., "poop"), or a little of both. Daily fluctuations are normal, whether you're dieting or not. If it's playing with your mind too much, cut back your weighing to once a week - then you'll see overall trends rather than the daily fluctuations.
  19. I could use some guidance. I know they say you shouldn’t weigh yourself often at home, but I weighed myself this morning for the first time in a week. I gained 3 pounds! I haven’t done anything different and I’m only a month postop, so I am only eating puréed and soft foods. Has this happened to anybody else? Any advice to get through this and not be totally depressed?

    Jealousy from others?

I had one sibling....an older brother by 18 months. Sadly, he died in an accident several years ago. We were very close, which also gave us the ability to cut each other to the quick during arguments. By the time we were in our twenties, I shut him down with little effort with one directed exchange....."Never underestimate how well I know you. Based on some of your activities and decisions you have made, I am glad I am living my life rather than yours. If I want your advise, which is highly unlikely, I will ask for it, until then, shut the hell up." My brother never knew what "activities and decisions" I was referencing. When asked to elaborate, i just smiled and walked away and he never pressed the matter. I gained a new level of respect from him by standing my ground. He never challenged or criticized me again. People can only treat you the way you allow them to treat you. Learn to either walk away or tell them to leave. The next time you see them, they will have more respect for your boundaries because you took control in the relationship. You don't need anyone's approval but your own!
  21. Everyone talks about the post-op weight loss stall - when does it pick up again? I'm trying not to compare myself to other people's successes, but honestly am frustrated. I am 3 weeks post-op and still on the pureed foods program. I'm only getting about 4-600 calories a day and reach for about 80g of protein and make it there most days thanks to my shakes. The scale hasn't moved in a week - I guess I should be asking my surgical team, but when can I expect that to change? I know I don't walk like I should, I suppose I should do more than 30 minutes a day. My doctor also told me to take a laxative every 3-4 days due to the dietary restrictions causing constipation. Any encouragement would be appreciated.
  22. I am scheduled for this on March 23. I am concerned too as this is more about alleviating symptoms of GERD and not weight loss. I have kept most of my weight off for the past 11 years but have been struggling with major GERD symptoms. They said my pouch as double in size along with a hiatal hernia. The revision of the pouch through endoscopy is said to make it better. I am very hopeful.
  23. I have had the same issues and will be going in for revision surgery on March 23. I have already had Roux en y surgery that is 11 years old and I have a BMI of 27, insurance is covering the procedure to make my pouch back to its original size as it has stretched to double the recommended size. Luckily I have not gained a lot of weight back but do have the GERD complications along with a hiatal hernia. The surgery will address the gerd but at this time my surgeon feels leaving the hernia alone is my best option. Hopefully your insurance doesn't give you a hard time as GERD is awful.
  24. My abdominal ultrasound test results are in! The gallbladder is unremarkable. No gallstones or sludge identified. I don't have any history with gallstones and I don't want to take the risk of gallstones developing after surgery because of the rapid weight loss. Should the gallbladder stay or go? Has anyone been in the same predicament or similar?
  25. Arabesque

    Should I get surgery

No I haven’t had a revision or need to repair a complication. I have three friends who have also had surgery & they haven’t either. Revisions are sometimes needed (for personal choice like to lose additional weight or medical reason like gerd) & sometimes a complication arises that needs corrective surgery but they aren’t all that common. Ask your surgeon how many they have done. You may be surprised.
