Hair Loss (Tips & Advice please)

Three months is pretty common & that’s regardless of taking additional vitamins or supplements or not (save your money on those - they may only benefit your new growth). Of course for some it’s a little longer & others a little less. Just make sure you’re meeting or very close to your protein goals. Most of the accelerated hair loss is down your body’s reaction to the surgery, anaesthetic, hormonal fluctuations, stress, etc. Remember, your new hair hair is still growing at it’s usual rate. In a few months you may start to see the little fluffy bits of your new hair growth. Many of us cut our hair shorter. Shorter hair looks fuller & bouncier than long & it will take less time for your new hair growth to grow to reach your shorter length hair. You can always grow it again. If your hair loss is significant or noticeable try wigs or hair pieces or once the hair loss has slowed/stopped maybe look at hair extensions.

It took at least 2 weeks before my swelling started to abate. I found it frustrating at the time. It will come.

  4. Yeah, you are way early on. I don't think I thought about food until a few weeks later. Main thing to really work on right now is to stay hydrated. Unfortunately for many, taste buds are often skewed for awhile. The protein and everything else will fall into place as you heal. Feel better soon. Congrats on your surgery.

Thanks. I'm doing OK, but not great. Everything tastes nasty, the liquid meds are awful, the pain comes and goes, but manageable. It's been a hard week to be honest.

I just want something that tastes good

You're still in the throw's of dealing with surgical medications with which they put into you, such as anesthesia. Theis can mess with your taste buds dramatically for a week or two, longer for some folks. Thus, I suggest you keep trying your favorites. You're no worse off than you are now, with a better possibility of success in drinking. Also, pay attention to what you think you may like at the moment, even something for which you never cared. This actually worked for me: For some weird reason I had a sense that something I never liked might taste good, and lo! I gave it a shot and I very much enjoyed it, and it still remains something I drink often. When all else fails, water may be what works. Again, I was never a fan of water as it upset my stomach when I drank water in any appreciable quantity. Post-op, in trying to figure something out, for whatever reason water worked well. No one was more surprised than me. Keep an open mind and keep working at it until all the anesthesia and other drugs leave your system. Fluids may help flushing the stuff out of your system. Hang in there. Good luck, Tek

    Little to no weightloss

Thanks to everyone who has replied. I spoke to the dietician today, who agreed my weigthloss is on the much slower side. I asked what my pre op weight was as I thought it was 21 stone 9 but it was 21 stone 4. This has really hit me hard. After 3 weeks post off when I weighed myself and thinking I hadn’t lost any, I was actually 5lb heavier. So really I have lost 14lb in 11 weeks. It’s just not good enough and my mental health has taken a huge nose dive. I suffer from CPTSD and this really isn’t helping. 14lb in 11 weeks. It’s an absolute joke. I can’t handle another week of looking at the scales and them staying the same. The surgery just doesn’t work for some people and unfortunately I’m in that bracket. I can lose 14lb in 1-2 weeks with my previous methods and what made me gain weight after that was the dreaded cycle of habit and yo yo dieting. At least the surgery has given me the tool to not be able to go back to old habits. I really appreciate everyone taking the time to reply to me. Thank you. Good luck to everyone on your journeys x

    Stall?

Seems like you are close to goal so your loss might be slowing down. Try changing things around to see if that causes the stall to break: changing exercise, increasing water intake, reviewing protein intake, tracking religiously etc. I feel the restriction depending on the type of food I eat, so you may want to see what you are eating, but like Catwoman7 said, some days I can have 1 egg, another I can have 2 so it all depends.

    Weight stall 7 days PO

A stall can be classified as a stall when you stay the same weight for 6 weeks. Often after surgery particularly when being on an IV, people can gain weight from the fluids. This whole thing is a long term plan. If you focus on the scales you will drive yourself nuts. Weight yourself once a week or once a month. Measure your body with a measuring tape and record the numbers. Do it again in once a month. Focus on other goals in your life or fitness levels or doing practical things as you work your way to achieving other outcomes in your life. Day by day. Baby steps.

The approval can take awhile. It took them 3 whole weeks to approve mine so try not to stress if they take their time. Welcome to the site though and wishing you the best on your journey!

    Little to no weightloss

Your surgery hasn’t failed. You have lost weight - yay! This is likely a stall as others have suggested. Stalls are very common. Almost everyone experiences them & they are an important part of your weight loss (it’s when your body pauses to reassess your new needs & resets digestive hormones, metabolic rate, etc.). They often last 1-3 weeks but for some they can be longer. The stall will break when your body is ready. Just stick to your plan & don’t stress your body more. And yes I know even with knowing this, stalls can still feel frustrating. We all lose our weight at our own rate. There’s no wrong or right amount you have to lose each week. There are just averages which only give you a bit of an idea of what you might experience not what you definitely will. Being a slow loser doesn’t mean you won’t lose all your weight either. It just means it may take you a little longer & that’s okay too.

    Any April Surgery Dates?

Struggling... I am just done with the gross shakes. I have had so many in the last few weeks... I think I don't like chocolate anymore (at least the fake chocolate). So every day, from the moment I wake up until I go to bed, it's a hunt for protein. But to be honest, I'm just not hungry, but I know I need to get in protein, and I am failing at that. I had to go back and get fluids twice... Plus, I've had a sinus infection back to back over the last two weeks. If anything could happen, it has. My incisions are healing nicely, and my pouch feels fine... it's all the other stuff

    Little to no weightloss

I understand your frustration. When I was about one week post op, I hit my first stall. ONE WEEK! I only had water, some broth and that’s it. So why the heck wasn’t I losing weight?? To make matters worse, my hubby, who ate take out twice that week, lost three pounds. WHAT!? I was totally insulted… and I started to think it was my body again. Always trying to keep me fat. Years of struggle and here I am eating 400 cals a day and not losing anything?? One week later, a small movement. But every time I changed food stages, another stall. That was four stalls in six weeks. Very frustrating. I knew my BMR was 1400, so staying around 600-800 calories with high protein and low carb would HAVE to work. It’s not the program as much as it is the science. a couple things I’ve noticed… 1. If I’m sick or have an allergy episode, I will stall or even gain 2. if I drink Gatorade or artificial sweeteners of any kind, I will stall 3. if I don’t have regular daily bowel movements, I will stall. This one is so hard to deal with. 4. If I don’t get enough sleep, I will stall. 5. When I started eating higher protein than recommended (90 recommended, I have 110), I will lose. Even if the carbs go up slightly. 6. If I eat too many processed foods in a day, like protein bars, drinks or snacks, I will stall. 7. If I don’t get enough pure water, I will stall. You might have some sensitivities like these or others…. Really examen what you’re taking in, not just the calories and fat. It’s a puzzle you gotta figure out for yourself. It’s hard work. But I believe you can do it. Just vent and get back in there! 😃
  18. Superrrrr late to this entire thread, but I have a med card and use weed for sleep/anxiety as well.....I had two doctors tell me different things. One said to stop smoking 6 weeks before pre-op, then afterward only edibles after 6 weeks post-op. Another said stop smoking and eating weed entirely. I don't understand how edibles can mess up your gut afterward, and I somewhat understand how smoking can cause ulcers, but I want to know if anyone had gastric bypass and after the 6 weeks post-op started vaping and eating edibles.
  19. Surgery was yesterday, and it went great. My pain is minimal. Feels like i just had some dental work done, but the pain meds are really doing their job! I had a quick post-op visit this morning, where they removed my gauze and gave me a compression garment. I will wear the garment 24/7 for the next 2 weeks, After that, I will just wear it when I'm sleeping. Not sure if I mentioned, but for the fat transfer, She used lipo to take the fat from my inner knees. She said that knee fat is stubborn which makes it great to use for tat transfers. I also get the added bonus of getting a little jump start on my thigh lift, I go back on Tuesday to get my sutures removed. Also, I'm allowed to take a shower tomorrow night! Woo hoo!! That's all for now!! 🙂

KE and Lindsay, I'm sorry recovery is rough. I really hope all the pain and discomfort eases asap. Can I ask what pain meds they're giving you? Do they give anything for the gas like degas? I'm wondering if I should bring some in myself next week. Keep your spirits up, this is just a small part of a life changing journey. Hugs.

    Weight stall 7 days PO

Stalls are a normal part of the process. If you're doing everything you're supposed to be doing, then you can trust that your weight will eventually get to where it's supposed to be. If the scale is making you crazy, stay off of it.

    Stall?

I'm 6.5 month po and have been in a stall for almost 2 months. The scale finally moved this morning! HalleluYah! Stalls are a normal part of the process. You just have to trust that if you're doing what you're supposed to do, your weight will eventually get to where it's supposed to be. After surgery, our stomachs are traumatized. They are firm and tight, due to the trauma of surgery. Because of this, we have a lot of restriction. It takes about a year for them to fully settle down and relax. As your tummy relaxes, you will be able to eat larger amounts of food. We have to be mindful not to overeat, as this happens. Just because we can, doesn't mean we should.

Hi ! I am 8days post op VSG and i started to stall too. I do weight myself daily but more out of curiosity about the “early stall” i hear a lot. And looks like i started mine. However, you shiuld feel way less bloated and less pain to take that as a daily victory :)

    Stall?

I've read that stretching out your stomach is pretty rare - it would take lots and lots of overeating - over time - to do that. It's probably a stall. As far as restriction, a lot of us who are several years out have "small pouch days" and "big pouch days" - you may be getting to that point where you may have stretches of time where you don't really feel much restriction.

    Weight stall 7 days PO

Stay off the scale. I haven't weighed myself since coming home from the hospital. Why? Because I don't want the scale dictating my moods. I know there will be stalls and water retention and worries if I'm doing something wrong or if the surgery is working. I will start weighing myself after my 5 week appointment once a week. I start regular food phase then and won't go back to doctor till my 3 month mark. I'm hoping by then I will get to experience seeing some mind blowing weight drops. If not, that's OK. Patience is a virtue. 👼
