I told my nutritionist that I was willing to use artificial sweeteners for recovery, but not beyond. (I am persuaded that my Diet Pepsi addiction helped get me to where I am, and after weaning myself off of it, I find the aftertaste repellent.) She was not interested in discussing sweeteners or my preference for a whole foods approach to weight loss, which makes me wonder how current her training is. However, the bariatric nurse assured me I would be back on whole foods quickly, and it was truly the best thing to do for my health. So I won't be stuck in sugar free, fat free, fake food land forever. While not everyone is sensitive to the biota-changing effects of fake sweeteners, I will discourage my kids from using them, even though their father, who shared my 20-year diet Pepsi habit, is thin and still fits into his high school jeans. Getting them to take Probiotics is a tougher nut to crack! They'll eat fermented sauerkraut and pickles, though -- and occasionally kombucha and yogurt. They are not fans of kimchi and miso.

How do you/did you qualify your doctor?? (Help)
BetsyB replied to BrooklynMom's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I started with my insurance policy. It required I use a Center of Bariatric Excellence. That pointed me in the direction of a couple of hospitals and surgeons. I was lucky enough to find out the father of one of my son's friends had surgery with one of the surgeons in my group. His feedback helped a lot. But all things being equal, I usually start by searching my state's licensure records; though it's not the best gauge of doctor competence, learning whether a doctor has a ton of complaints against him/her is a starting point. Referral by other doctors is iffy---they are not always motivated by real competence. That said, I don't think you're going to find too many shoddy doctors at NYU or Cornell; university-affiliated hospitals are generally the best in terms of quality of care (including nursing care). Since you're dealing with guys who are essentially "tied" in terms of competence, I'd go with the one I felt most comfortable with. You're forging a lifelong relationship--so rapport is more important, IMO, than it is for most other surgeries. -
How do you/did you qualify your doctor?? (Help)
BrooklynMom posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi, I am in the fact finding stage of my bariatric journey  We went to NYU's information session last night and my ob-gyn has recommended a doctor at his hospital Dr. Palmp (sp) at NY Presbyterian/Cornell hospital. Both hospitals are well regarded here in NYC. Is there a way to qualify the different doctors? Does it matter who does the procedure? Thoughts very appreciated. BrooklynMom -
I was banded April 2007 and had done great until this past September when I started experiencing the same pain as you are detailing. I also work in the ICU at the same hopsital where I had my banding done. The surgeon who performed my surgery had since left but I spoke to his associate about it when he came in to make rounds. He ordered a esophagram which looked as tho my esophagus was swollen so he came up to the unit and removed all the saline to let me rest for a couple of weeks. I went back in 2 weeks and told him the pain was still there but not as bad with the saline removed. He then put 1.5 cc back in. I had been at 3.4 previously. In two weeks he put me back to 3 cc and then 2 weeks later back to the 3.4. I still have the same pain but since then it has not been as intense. However now I have a whole new set of problems. On feb 18th I went to work and shortly after getting there I became very hot and sweaty. I sat down and put my head down on the nurses station for a few minutes then got very sick to my stomach. I got up to go to the backroom and that is the last thing I remember. The next thing I knew there was about 20 people kneeling around me. I was on a backboard and c collar and had a huge gash in the back of my head. Apparently I had passed out and then stopped breathing and they had to do cpr on me. After getting my head closed with 9 staples I was admitted for observation and had a complete cardiac workup all which was negative except that I have a low heart rate. Upon admission they found me to be extremely dehydrated and that and the low heart rate was all they found. I was discharged in two days. No our hospital does not have a bariatric surgeon and I have to go 90 miles to see one but all the drs that were involved in my care (family dr, cardiologist and endocrinologist) are all convinced that it has something to do with the band. I was wondering if anyone else has ever had any problems such as this.

Tasty but complete multi vitamin
Beckyyb93 replied to Patoonces's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
I was told no flinstones and only vitamins meant for bariatric patients. I take celebrate vitamins and my two favorite multivitamin flavors are grape and mandarin orange. I also love their iron if you need it, it's grape and somehow doesn't taste like iron when you chew it. For calcium I do the lemon soft chews and they are awesome. I'm all about Celebrate, they taste pretty good and are very very good for you, much more complete nutrition than flinstones IMO. -
Conversion from lapband to sleeve - lower BMI
JRT Mom replied to Stella84's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I think it is ridiculous that if you need to have a revision to a bariatric procedure from a failed initial one that you have to wait to regain all your weight before you can get another! If you met the criteria for the first procedure and had surgery and now need another the insurance company should be satified that the patient is still a candidate. Most of us had our first surgery because of health considerations and to expect us to regain all that weight to have the revision surgery is unhealthy and a waste (waist!) of time. I have to have a lap band removed and fortunately (or unfortunately) I have already regained enough weight and have two new comorbidities so I don't have to gain even more to get my revision. -
So my doctor just recommended lap-band surgery for me
Ellen86 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello, My name is Ellen and I was so pleased to find a forum all about the lap-band! I'm 21 years old and have been trying different diest and eating plans for the past 10 years, with only temporary success. My doctor, who normally is more conservative methods and does not always advocate bariatric surgery, has decided it's time to look into this. My weight has affected me for a long time, physically and mentally, so the thought that this may be more helpful is very exciting. I know it's going to be a huge lifestlye change, and it's a little scary, but I'm excited too. at almost 280 lbs, I'm tired of being big! So I decided to join here in the hopes i could learn more about this procedure, how people like it, and maybe use this as a source for support as well. So i guess first off.. those of you who have already had the procedure, what do you think of the lap-band and the new lifestyle that goes with it? -
Darn! I really thought Fair Oaks had a bariatric unit too? Not sure why I thought that. I had a spinal fusion (neck) there and got a private room. Hubby slept in the recliner for 3 days (and nights) til I was released...bless him! I hope and pray for a private room again!! Llamalover, do let us know how your appt goes!!

Long term followup care- what type of doctors?
brooklynconceivable replied to brooklynconceivable's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Sadly, they are unwilling to talk to me on the phone, I have to have an appointment to get any medical advice/support from my surgeon's office- and no longer live anywhere within range to do that. It is such a pain in the butt. I wonder if I found a bariatric surgeon locally, if they'd be willing to support me? Probably not. uggg. -
Tasty but complete multi vitamin
Beckyyb93 replied to Patoonces's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
I agree, I've heard such bad things about Flinestones but so so many people take them. There is a reason bariatric vitamins are made the crazy thing is some people are 100% fine taking them and have great lab work then someone else is deficient on 3-4 things so IMO it's a better idea to just take the complete ones, take your iron (even though I know you all hate it), take your vitamin D and take your calcium..just do it..you got this surgery knowing you would have to take vitamins for the rest of your life so it kinda baffles me when people just stop taking them..you can't just stop eating small portions it's not your choice to make anymore. Sorry, I have vitamin rants often with bypass patients in clinic because people seem to "forget" after they lose the weight but you permanently altered your body for forever so take your gosh darn vitamins!! -
Did you order the Bariatric Advantage vitaband chewables? I think I will be ordering them this weekend. What flavor did you get?

Keep on plugging you will get there! I eat: Breakfast - either - one package of oatmeal mixed with fat free yogurt or egg beater omelet( 2 or 3 servings of beaters) with one slice fat free cheese and some veggies or a few fake bacon bits in it. Lunch- usually a protein shake with strawberries skim milk and Bariatric (sp?) Advantage or Unjury. - Sometimes no berries but ice cubes, instant coffee and sweet & low. Dinner - lean protein and veggies Snack- one bag of 100 calorie popcorn, Two 60 calorie string cheese and two 25 calorie diet hot chocolate. Also vitamins, water & ice tea. I eat about 1000-1200 calories per day and about 80 grams of protein. This keeps me full all day. Hope this helps

YES… Stress can stall weight loss. I have dealt with this challenge prior to getting sleeved. I was able to loose 65 lbs with low carb high Protein diet and hit a terrible stall when I was very stressed. The stressors affected my life for over 6 months and I did not loose another pound. I gained about 10 lbs over that 6 months and "justified" this as my body balancing out despite the diet. I went off the diet and gradually gained another 10 lbs. Then my PCP changed my thyroid medication and I gained all the weight plus another 10 lbs (getting to 265 lbs) Thats when I decided it was time for bariatric surgery. Now when I get stressed and see the scales stall…. I try to be calm, take a deep breath and tell myself that I am in control of the choices I make so, think, pray and choose what will be best for me.

I had my Bariatric History Appointment today and was told I am an excellent candidate for the RNY Surgery. I have to see a nutritionist, and phycologist. I also have to have an EGD and do a sleep study. The Dr. says we can most likely pick the surgery date on April 16th at my next appointment with him. SUPER EXCITED to start my lifestyle change. 😍

Am still waiting for my doctor to submit to my insurance company. My POP sent all of my medical records to my GYN instead of the bariatric doctor. How frustrating. Had to have a D&C and biopsy's two weeks ago after having had no period fo 4 years. I have been reading that being overweight can create too much estrogen. I did not know this. Is this true? Having trouble driving because I have a stick shift car and my stomach is now becoming an issue. How very embarrasing. Have a bad knee and am using that as an excuse to look at an automatic. I really hope I can get this lap band surgery done because I feel I am just about out of options and the extra weight is compromising my ablility to live the life I want.

I got Celebrate chewables and they taste horrible and the Calcium vit. were huge however I was stuck with them because I didn't want to waste them. They were not expensive and I think they were like a 60 and 90 day supply. Before I even had my surgery my nutritionist and the bariatric nurse were telling us that for some people the liquid vitmans worked best. So once I was out of my 1st supply I got the liquid multi and calcium Vitamin and I have been using that every since and its by welless. Now celebrate also has these like candy chewable Vitamins and the caramel and chocolate tatse just like candy. Hope this helps.

Congratulations on your amazing progress! You should be SO proud of yourself! I am in a similar quandary, and am meeting with a new nutritionist next week to get some guidance. I work out hard (triathlon and strength training) a minimum of 6 days per week, and twice per day on most days. I take in about 1000-1300 calories per day, and my target split is 30% Protein, 35% fat, 35% carbs. I had surgery 14 months ago and I'm just 1.8 pounds away from my goal, but feel like I'm overdue for switching from bariatric-weight-loss mode of eating into athlete-fueling mode. I tried to talk this through with the nutritionist on my bariatric team and she didn't have a clue how to advise me. Thus, I'm meeting with a sports nutritionist next Thursday. I'll let you know what I learn!

YES!!! I've been having trouble off and on since Christmas. Doc unfilled me in Jan. and that helped for a little bit but it came back with a vengeance! Found out that I was eating all the wrong foods and when you have a tiny little pouch for your food, the wrong kinds can really hurt! Was told NO...chocolate, caffine, tea's unless they are herbal decaffinated, spicy, greasy, deep fried, acidy, citrusy, tomato based, and strong spices like mint or cinnamon. All the foods I love basically, and ate a lot of! Also a big no-no is NSAID's like Ibuprofen. They have me taking basically two previcid (40 mg total) a day one pill every 12 hours until told otherwise and no eating or drinking for 3 hours before bedtime. I also sleep propped up on 3 pillows. I go in for GI Tests and lapband inspection this Friday. Don't let it go for too long though, if it persists definately see your bariatric doc! Many bad things can happen if you let this go for too long! Good luck!

Question about eating post-op
Lady VS replied to Jen-DallasTX's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello newbies. This is the time we call adjusting to the band. Your body does need time to heal and process the fact that heyyy, I'm not getting all that food in me. Yes, there will be many days that you're going to feel as though you're starving to death. But guess what???? You're not. You're just not used to eating and drinking this way and it does take time to get used too. Please please follow the plan of your bariatric team. They are the experts and we're your support. Congratulations on being banded and best wishes to you. -
Scared to death in Georgia
lindajoy replied to lindajoy's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Well spoke with one bariatric center regarding lap band in the atlanta area...my BMI is border line, have a few medical problems with the extra weight but not enough to get me into a meeting. Unalbe to get BCBS of GA to insure the surgery and I do not have 17, 000.00 laying around to pay for this procedure myself. So with that being said, thank you for the support you have showed me, and I wish you all the best of luck. -

Am I cheating??? Yes!!!
SleevedRN replied to mav2126's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well.....my Doctor who is in the top 5% of bariatric surgeons in the U.S. didn't even have me do a pureed diet. I was drinking full liquids right after surgery for one week. Which included Jell-O, pudding and sugar free popsicles. I am now 12 days out eating a soft diet. Every Doctor is different and it doesn't mean something is going to go wrong. I trust mine completely. Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using BariatricPal mobile app
