Rhonda, I was banded in Oct 2005 too! I'm in Houston, nice to meet a fellow bandster I've been extremly fortunate not to have many complications, BUT I have heard that drainage leaves many people tight and causes problems with fills (often leading to having some of the fill removed) so it takes longer to get to a good restriction level. Are you completely unfilled at this point? When you go back next month will they start you off slowly? I decided I rather liked the slow climb, at each of my fills I had only .5 added at a time. I believe it helped me learn how to recognize what I could tolerate. I have a short list of foods I definitely stay away from, and others I know are sure bets if I'm away from home and have to grab something quick. Everyone here has great advice, read on and you'll be savvy before you know it! All the best, Karla

The day after the surgery the nurses kept asking me if I had passed gas yet, and I kept answering no, and asked if I was supposed to. I wanted to get out of the hospital as soon as possible and get back home to my nice comfy bed....so when the tummy started rumbling and I felt like I needed to pass wind I gave a little push....only to find that it was not gas at all !!!! I was extremely embarrassed. I could not believe that this was happening to me. Luckily I had a private room, so I quickly went into the restroom and finagled getting my undies off which was complicated with a catheter and hopped in the shower. It really was the most disgusting thing that has happened to me since being pregnant. I am so relieved to find out that I am not the only one that this has happened to. A week after surgery and I don't trust gas to be just that.

Ok, so found out my insurance will cover complications which is nice, but obviously not hoping for any! My question is once we get back, for normal post op care do we just see our regular PCP or does it have to be with a specialist?

Dear Lap-Band: A Fond Farewell
Sarah H replied to Alex Brecher's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Magazine
I am in a similar situation. I had my band placed in July 2012 and it slipped at some point and was repaired Nov 2013. By the time of the repair I had lost 100lbs. Since then I have gained 80lbs, developed a hiatal hernia and a host of other physical complications from the weight gain. To say I am frustrated is an understatement. My last two visits my Dr has removed fluid from my band because I am experiencing shortness of breath. Contrast and endoscopy confirmed band placement was fine. I am having mixed feelings about the band since the hernia developed after placement. I have been seriously considering a revision and having the gastric sleeve. I don't know what to expect since the placement is fine but there's the shortness of breath and now he's removed 5ccs from the band, I feel my appetite increasing. Trying not to get completely discouraged and remain positive but I feel like I'm fighting a losing battle. -
Need advice with non-existent/slow weightloss after RNY
bigsoutherngal replied to Annek2014's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
When I had my surgery I was slow to the draw. I also had complications. But I stayed at the same weight for almost a month!!! During that time I was eating nothing. No shakes either. My body was rejecting everything. So how could I not eat for 4 wks and survive and not lose weight? Iv fluids first of all and second my body was in starvation mode. Eventually I lost weight about 6-10 lbs a week depending on my participation in exercise. Now almost a year later I am down 129 lbs. You will get there! Each journey is different. -
We are now scheduled for Monday @ noon to remove the stents, I'm very optimistic the leak will be healed. Wife is doing better today, walking around more. We thought about a 2nd opinion, but there's 2 roadblocks. The surgeon who did the repair did do the initial surgery. And after 2 months of complications, he is so familiar with what is happening. Another thing is that he is the only bariatric surgeon my insurance covers. In the worse case scenerio, like no improvement in the healing at all, I think we will seek a 2nd opinion.

I'm so sorry to hear about the complications your wife has been experiencing. I don't have any experience with a leak, but I have had family members in the hospital for extended periods of time. It's hard on everyone.

absolutely no problem deciding, zip, nada, no. Bypass has never been an option. Too many complications. Plus, I'm not on the higher end of the weight scale. 37 BMI but lots of medical issues. Plus my daughter has had and her best friend had bypass. World of difference, Plus being off work 6 weeks was not an option. Trisha

I am 12 days post op and told to be on full liquids for 3 weeks so I definatly feel your pain. Don't beat yourself up for the past, but prepare yourself for YOUR future. I have a friend who was banded 2 yrs ago but had to have it removed after 5 months because of complications because she did not follow the Doc's orders. She cried when they had to take it out because she was still loosing wieght. I have deceided come hell or high water I will follow Doc's orders because of this, but it is hard. It is your future and you owe it to yourself. Good luck.

My date is 10/10/2011 - I am extremely anxious!
Norman replied to PJ713's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Two days before my surgery I spent all night reading horror stories on message boards and the internet. After surgery I was freaking out the first few weeks. I think I called the nurse at least a dozen times during that time. In fact I even went to the surgeon for an extra appointment. I will tell you this everything turned out great. I had no pain after surgery and was out of the hospital after one evening. I am 10 weeks out today and have lost 67 pounds. Yes some people have complications but set your eyes on the prize and everything will work out. You will be fitting into the swim suit you always wanted to wear next summer. I am sure your husband would love you big or little. Best of luck, Norm -
female only 26 and facing a hysterectomy..please help
bandster_1007 posted a topic in The Gals' Room
ok, so for any of you that have followed me at all know that i miscarried this year and had some severe complications. well, i thought it was all better. i've been back at work for 2 months now, and then yesterday i end up in the ER and i have yet another uterine infection. what the hell? so, i have to go see my ob/gyn tomorrow and this is the same one that already thinks i need to have a hysterectomy. i'm not going to debate it on here, because i know it is a very personal thing. for me, i have so many problems now, with no periods, cystic ovaries, endometriosis, severe pms, and now severe lower back pain from a heavy uterus and infection with occasional black blood but no period. so here is my question: for those of you who have had it done (removing even your ovaries) do you regret it? how much time did you have to take off work? and the biggest thing..how did it affect your sex life? i'm married and sex is very painful now and it obviously affects my drive. also because my hormones are so out of wack, i am used to using a lubricant. i'm scared. i'm too young for this, but it appears that i am only putting off the inevitable. i can't wait to hear from some of you. and thank you in advance. btw..i went to my regular family doctor yesterday and he would not treat me..told me i had to go to er, because i was showing signs of being "septic". chills, fever, pain, etc. er doctor agreed. i got iv antibiotics and ioral antibiotics. also, the pain was horrible. 2 shots of demerol didn't do anything to me at all. they finally gave me stadol to help. they were very caring and helpful, i was afraid they were going to think i was not really hurting, because i wasn't crying or anything, but i was just honest with them, and they were fantastic (i have only been to the er in my adult life over this female crap and it has all been since my miscarriage). -
In any WLS forum, you will read many stories that are scary. I contemplated surgery a year before having it done, and it was what I read in all of the forums that freaked me out. After packing on another 10 pounds, I knew I had to move forward, and I chose banded plication. I was scheduled for the bypass, but was too scared to go through with it. Also....I've known a couple of bypass people who gained a lot of weight over time, and ended up getting the band over the bypass. The downside to the band over the other surgeries, is that there is continuous adjusting & follow up. With the sleeve and bypass, the surgery & done & that's it. Yes, you still have to follow up with your doctor, and there is support, etc. but the band required fills, un-fills, etc. Even still, knowing that it can be reversed was the peace of mind I needed, going into this aggressive form of weight loss. No matter which surgery you decide to go with, eating behavior has to change. Most people have good results in the short term with all procedures. But over time, it's so easy to fall into old patterns; there isn't a surgery out there to change that. One more thing..... When reading through these forums, please keep in mind that the success stories far outweigh the complication stories. It's unfortunate that some people have had a very bad experience. Some of the ones who post about it, feel the need to warn the masses of impending doom. When making your decision, try & keep your eye on the big picture

My date is 10/10/2011 - I am extremely anxious!
Fusilli66 replied to PJ713's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
My surgery is the day after yours 10/11. I'm 45 and I'm lucky that my husband is very supportive of my decision. Try to focus on all the good stories. Actually, there seems to be a lot more good outcomes than bad. I have yet to read an actual horror story, but I pick and chose what I read. I guess I am a glass half full sort of person, but I truly believe that it will all be worth it. I don't expect complications at all, but if there are, I will deal with them then. Worrying about what may or may not happen isn't going to change what happens. And it seems that complications are the exception in this surgery and not the rule. I do expect to feel some amount of pain, I'm sure there will be gas and some nausea for a short time, but I don't consider those complications, just things that come with this surgery. I wake up with terrible back pain daily from all this excess weight, so if I have to suffer in some pain for a few days or even a week post-op, in the end it will result in less painful mornings from carrying around all this excess weight. So it is worth it to me. I am very excited about my surgery, not nervous at all. But I think some amount of nerves is very normal. I think if your boyfriend was supporting your decision, that would probably ease some of the anxiety. But you said your father is supporting your decision, so try to spend some time with him and get some positive vibes off him. You have made the right decision for yourself and it will all be worth it. Good luck! We'll compare stories after surgery! -
Sherrie Jo, Almost the same thing happened to me. I was going to Mexico and then my insurance said they would pay 100% in the states. So I went to the states and put my money into a mutual fund. Save your money as the doctors in Mexico are making enough. I wish I could make 10k for 45 minutes work. I think if the surgeon is in the states with a reputable instituiton with the follow you would need then stick to the USA!!!! Otherwise you will have to find fills from someone not familiar with you. Stick to the local doctor and any possible complications can be addressed in your area.... peace

Feeling anxiety about surgery
dragonflylover replied to a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am living proof..amongst a trillion other people.. haha. i had my surgery on 11/23.. I woke up fine from anesthesia. of course i was drugged up on morphine.. but it wasn't bad AT ALL.. the recovery goes rather quick. anxiety is normal. your preparing your body for fight or flight. just take deep breaths and keep reminding yourself why you did it. feel free to ask any question and good luck on your journeys. i suggest asking your surgeon the statistics of complications. it's nice to hear zero... -
6 years after band thinking of adding Plication
JACKIEO85 replied to ccattorney's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I believe it has slipped because I have restriction but no sense of fullness but my doctor says it isn't impossible because of the way it was anchored IF it's impossible THEN NO bander would ever have or HAD a SLIP and I know people that HAVE HAD SLIPS, what he's probably saying here is that with the "older" versions slipped MORE, then they discovered that by doing a pars flaccida technique it has reduced the % of slips. My doctor is recommending that I have plication surgery to reduce my stomach volume and that works well with existing bands. I am leaning towards getting it done because I am heading towards gaining all of the weight back. I am leaning towards plication because it seems to be the least invasive and no resectioning of internal organs. Has anyone else here had the plication surgery after the band? What are your thoughts. I'm playing Devil's advocate here... What happen's if you agree to Plication but since your Doctor didn't do any other tests on the band, Endo, Fluro and then does the Plication and finds a problem with the band and removes it, how would you feel? you might want to research more on Plication, sleeve etc..(not promoting either, when I'm done with the band that's it for me JMHO) Plication can fail too, (you can stretch the stomach,) any WLS surgery can, I guess I'm saying Any time they do surgery it's invasive, you just need to know what your willing to deal with on a personal level. And maybe find out First WHY the band isn't working for you any longer, your NOT ALONE, it happens. Good Luck on your journey~ LB Complications link: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3038361/ Plication Link http://weightloss.clevelandclinic.org/gastricplication.aspx http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3397205/ -
Should I Wait The Six Months Or Get A Loan And Go To Mexico?
KellyL replied to Kiki Von Moonshine's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hmmm difficult decision indeed, but I would get Insurance to cover it if possible. Not just due to the money, but the post op care you could get Insurance to cover if the unforeseen happened and you had any problems or complications. Of course, waiting does suck. And are you sure that your insurance will cover the actual Sleeve? Some people go through the 6 month wait and supervised physician diet, only to find out they only have the option of getting the RNY or Band, cause they don't cover the Sleeve. Then there's all the many other hoops to jump through such as Psych evaluation, sleep study, nutritionist, Stress test, not all Dr's have you do all tests, but most do some or all. So you may not get your surgery at the end of the 6 month wait if you also then have to schedule a bunch of different other appts. There's a lot to consider, I know I didn't help you much here, lol. Good luck on your decision! -
Lap band with an ostomy
jjsmiles replied to katandcharlie's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi Kat, I had an ileostomy almost 2 years ago (April 2006) and was banded on September 25, 2007. I did have a set back after surgery, due to my ileostomy, but looking back, I think I may have been chronically dehydrated due to my ileostomy for a long time. After my surgery, I did not have any hunger and lost over 30 pounds between surgery and my follow-up Dr. appointment in 3 weeks. I knew that I was quite sick (incredibly weak and dizzy) and my ileostomy was producing incredible amounts (between 2 and 3 litres a day), but I hung on to see my surgeon (who also did my ileostomy). He ended up putting me in hospital and I ended up staying for 2 weeks. I was very sick, my blood tests revealed that I had really screwed up all of my electrolytes. Unfortunately I ended up gaining 57 pounds  (no that isn't a typo) with all the iv fluids being poured into my body. I lost 25 pounds quite quickly, but the rest took almost 2 1/2 months. No one can quite explain what happened to me, although the most reasonable explanation seems to be that because of the lap band surgery, my bowels got very confused and decided that everything I ate and drank had to be immediately ejected from my body. My ET nurse has said that your small intestine is a very greedy organ and that at any sign of trouble, it will take over and divert everything to itself, starving your other organs. Happily, I haven't had any more complications since that time and my body has settled down. My production is down a great deal (I am eating a lot less now), but I haven't noticed any other difficulties. I take a Multivitamin and a Calcium supplement daily. I just had my blood work done last week and all was normal, except my Iron, which was low (first time ever), so now I started taking an iron supplement as well. -

Pregnancy And Sleeve
sassypants replied to Luckystar12's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was told that the first 18months is a no go area for pregnancy because of all the potential problems birth defects and possible miscarriage as your body takes roughly a year to fully heal from any surgery. Also 18months out your in a no pain/mends/eating well stage to not have possible complications. We were also told that we have to be extra careful for the first 6 months after the op because most people are extremely fertile due to all the hormones being released. But this op isn’t a problem when its time because your not poorly nutritioned or doing the mal absorption thing you can eat balanced just fine its just smaller and you may have to increase how many times you eat in a day when pregnant to keep up with the baby needs. -
2 Days Post Op/newly Sleeved
Eat That Frog replied to newgrandmother's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Newgrandmother...glad to hear you are OK, although it sounds like a rough experience. I think we were sleeved the same day (9/10) and I am feeling a tiny better each day but knw that there can still be some complications. Hopefully being at home and getting a good nights sleep will be a big step. Keep us posted! -
Anyone From Kalamazoo, Mi Area?!
Drewgirl56 replied to Rlowery's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I know I'll probably find out tomorrow, but what stuff do you have to work on? The dietician at the seminar mentioned a checklist...what's that about? I had a friend that had the bypass. She lost over 100 lbs, but she also had some complications. All I really know for sure is that I DO want surgery, and I DON'T want a band. Have you joined any online support groups that you like? I joined this one on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/groups/100213180146725/ and it seems like it will be very helpful... -
What’s a 38 year old girl with a BMI of 36 to do?
2muchfun replied to gin765's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
My BMI was down around 37 when I had surgery but my doctor actually suggested the band and still does to this day. Post surgical care such as fills, follow up visits and consults regarding any complications are just as important as having the band placed around your stomach. We see so many patients who fail to lsoe due to their surgeons unwillingness to support band patients for years after surgery. Don't make the mistake of allowing a disinterested surgeon place the band and kick you to the curb. You sound like a good band candidate? Although, we have many many banders here who are quite successful and had BMI's up around 45-55. For me, I didn't want my stomach removed, period. I think the sleeve and bypass and DS are all very good surgical techniques and on average produce faster and better results than the band. But, all I really wanted was a little help with reducing my hunger and allowing me to feel satisfied with less food. That's what the band did for me. And that's all I wanted. If you think you might need more from the surgery, you might not be a good candidate. If you need a tool that will only allow you to eat 4 ozs of food at a time, the sleeve or bypass might be a better choice. Because I still have my lower stomach, I can still eat a lot of food, IF, I want to. But I don't, because the band helps me feel satisfied with less and keeps me satisfied for hours after a meal. Good luck and I look forward to many comments to your topic. tmf
