The Big Fat Truth about Low Fat Foods

I think tracking is important, I do that too. I am just always getting mad about those foods. Yesterday, my husband brought a bag of "baked" chips. They had 10 calories less for a serving but a lot more ingredients than regular chips. Add to that they don't even remotely taste as nice as normal chips - no good crunch, not as satisfying - and the calorie savings are really not worth mentioning. That said, I think it is perfectly fine to use less butter, use a cut of meat with less fat or use ground turkey instead of ground pork, but I think the problem starts when fat (sugar/carbs) are replaced with artificial stuff. I noticed from tracking, that I seem to not even get the recommended amount of fat even though I am eating 2% yogurt, drinking 2% milk and am cooking with olive oil...but I also don't want to eat a spoon full of Peanut Butter just to up the fat...but maybe I should? Or almond butter?

    More difficult than I thought

At almost 8 weeks post op I'm feeling better and I have made changes to help with the head hunger. I change the TV or stand up and move during food comcommercials. Hubby doesn't eat in front of me until I've ate so that my pouch feels full. I've only had one 3 cc fill and don't feel restricted yet. I eat Protein first and track everything. It will get better. Stay strong. Had lapband surgery 10/12/16

    Slider Food Question

Just hoping someone could explain this to me, please. I know to stay away from slider foods such as ice cream, shakes, etc. but was wondering how the stomach differentiates between well chewed foods (ex: Soups, crackers, and even salads) if we're supposed to chew them until they're applesauce consistancy? Went to Olive Garden for their Soup and salad special the other day and couldn't eat the soup even though I chewed very well (Soup Fajoule, but it was very, very think - stew consistancy) but the salad went down great. I had to stop when I thought I had enough because I really didn't feel my band helping me out like I usually do with other foods. Hope my question makes sense. Thanks in advance for any responses! Banded 10-7-08 320/284 as of 12/17

    Sugar ?

In our bodies, the liver stores carbohydrate in the form of glycogen. We draw on it when our blood sugar is too low---so it's a great mechanism to maintain homeostasis. However, too much stored glycogen causes the liver to become engorged/enlarged. The purpose of the preop diet is to deplete the liver's glycogen stores. This shrinks the liver in size, and makes it easier and safer for the surgeon to manipulate tools during banding. Carbohydrate, including sugar, is limited during the preop diet to spur the liver to release its glycogen stores. (If you don't eat the carbs/sugar, then glycogen is released by the liver to keep your blood sugar steady.) If choosing between foods, I'd opt for Splenda over sugar during the preop diet; your doctor can give you more specific guidelines about how many grams of carb to which to limit yourself, if you need them. (Mine just spelled out exactly what I could eat: 2 Protein shakes/day--with <10 g carb each---4 ounces of lean protein and 1/2 cup nonstarchy veggies each day. Plus up to 2 servings each of broth, sugar-free popsicles, and sugar-free Jello. So maybe a total of 35-50 g carb, max.)

    Struggling

I struggle also sine aug 20 thought it was me failing again. But I got my 3rd fill last week and it is so different (10 cc band cc with 6.5 in) I hope this last a long while. doctor said I could have another 1.2 cc in 14 days if needed so keep that in mind and if you still feel hungry all the time get a fill don't wait a month like I did. Track every bit and drink it really helps to do that.....it gets easier when you get to the green zone I am almost afraid to count that I am there it feels just right and every time I think ive got it..I don't....good luck and hang in there................line dancer

    Fruit....

I've been eating an apple or orange (sometimes both) every day for a few weeks. I'm just at 7 months post op and am around 10 pounds from goal. I lost 5.8 pounds last week so adding fruit hasn't affected my weight loss. I firmly believe that in order to have long term success it is important to eat a balanced diet. No one can ever tell me that eating fresh fruit in moderation is a bad thing. Compared to the crap I used to stuff myself with eating an apple is nothing...carbs, sugars and all. I've seen too many cautionary tales on here of folks that didn't lose all of the weight or regained much of it. I think in my case, being too restrictive with certain foods isn't sustainable long term. I can tell you what I don't eat...fried foods, pasta, chips, fries, Pizza, pop, etc...all the stuff that led me to surgery in the first place. Fruits and vegetables didn't make me fat.

  14. Hello all, OK so I am so ashamed of myself. I have been on this pre-op diet which is full liquids for 10 days. I am on day seven and I cheated! I was feeling so sick tonight that I ate a sandwich and a piece of chocolate. So far I have lost 12 pds on this diet, which is so hard to do. I have been eating nothing but soups, crytal light, diet shakes, protien shakes. After I ate something, I didn't feel sick to my stomach anymore, but now I feel like what the hell did I just do? I guess this is what I was thinking, I have surgery on Monday the 31st. Which I wont do anymore food I will stick to the liquids until the surgery, then after the surgery my doctor puts me on a clear liquid for 4 days, then this full liquid for 10 more days, then blenderized food for 2 weeks, then soft food for another 2 weeks, then I can start eating small amounts of healthy food. When I thought about it, I was like wow I'm not going to be able to eat REAL food for over 5 weeks. That scared me I guess, so I did it, I ate something other then full liquid and now I am scared its going to screw things up for the surgery!! Has anyone else done this? Please be honest, I am so scared right now!! Please help!

    Liquid phase question

What Protein Powder do you recommend? I'm overwhelmed with the choices and am starting to sample different shakes to see what I want to get for my 10 day preOP. Premier are okay, but even a little too sweet. I'm a fruity person. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

    Lap band sponsor!!

Whitney, you'll find a lot of support on this forum. I haven't been banded yet myself. My date is 2/19. Do you know when you will be banded? There is a February 2013 Bandsters group. There are other groups that you might fit in as well. I've learned a lot by interacting with people on the forum that know a lot more about the procedure than I do. Feel free to PM if you'd like.

5 years worth of medical records and BCBS

I have BCBS... Here's the skinny on the 5 year. They like it a lot, but it doesn't necessarily have to be 5 CONSECUTIVE YEARS. If you can get 5 weights within the last 10-15 years, you should be fine. I was in a similar situation. Instead, I had my grandmother who works at a doctor's office a few states away just manufacture some weights for me. I know, immoral, but after dealing with BCBS for 4 months on this, I am none to happy with their morality standards. My struggle with BCBS has nothing to do with that weight history though, my BMI was above 50. Anywho, suffice to say it is no longer above 50. No one.... not the insurance company, the doctor, no one batted an eye at that 5 year weight history that was fudged for me. In any case, my doctor informed me that not many people have a 5 year CONSECUTIVE history. Remember, the more data you submit to the Insurance, the better off you are... so if you have 20 years off and on, then submit everything you got. Good luck and please let me know how it works.
  20. Uuugghh! Hang in there, I also carry all my weight around my middle, so I know what you mean. Crossing my fingers you get you approval soon!!! I'm just beginning my journey and won't have sleeve surgery until January, but I'm looking forward to dropping 10% pre-op

    Bad breath

Yes and I just asked my surgeon about this yesterday at my 10 day post op. He said you can order a stuff called dexcom from bariatric advantage. And yes it's ketosis from your body consuming more protein then anything else. I am in the same boat with you all on this. But I've been cleared to go to puree and it gets better.
  22. surgery scheduled for Feb 19 in Anchorage. by dr clark at JBER
  23. Hi everyone, I 'checked in' w/my doc office today to see if they'd heard from my insurance company, they said they'd been trying to call me b/c they want to schedule my survey for July 3! (It's June 22! Not sure if my vm was full or what?!) I mentioned I have a fatty liver and asked, don't I need the 2 week diet (their 2 week diet), they said a week should be fine. So....tell me what to do and buy and for how long I should have a sitter watch my kids afterward and are there any decent sized vitamins out there that I can actually swallow, and any other advice? I was picturing being told my date was 3-4 weeks away, I'd eat a few of my favorite meals, have my last margarita and diet coke, but I guess I am on shakes starting asap! Thanks in advice for any info and advice!

    Body Scale

I bought a basic one on Amazon before I started my pre-op stage. It keeps me in check but it's important to keep a mentak note not to use it too much as it can become obsessive (guilty of that at one point) There's some advanced ones that connect to fancy weight loss apps, but I like my normal $19 one.
  25. With all the success that the vsg operation promised and delivered to you and I...I was contemplating the idea of helping others. Here's what happens 3 or 4 days every week in my life: Every time I'm having a break from work, me and a couple of guys go downstairs from the office building to hang out for a while. And there, you see all sorts of people (it's a very busy building). And like you'd expect, some faces become familiar..in fact very familiar that you start noticing a routine (kind of like the movie Disturbia ) Now, in this story...there are two guys I do not know but always see and they both are very heavy and need help. One of them doesnt seem to be doing anything about it but certainly gives me flashbacks of yours truely...and the other one always comes with a gym bag (theres a huge gym in the building), but he always seems reluctant to enter..and from what I've witnessed, he ALWAYS parks his car, walks slowly to the stairs facing the entrance..has a cigarette or two with soda..goes inside the building for 10 min and comes out with a sandwich...and then leaves!! all this with the gym bag on his shoulder (it has the gym's name on it). so here I am back to what I was thinking off. Shouldn't i intervene? Shouldnt I go to the first guy and tell him, you're still young and there is a way? what about the other guy..he's definitely trying to do the right thing..but we all know how hard it is for him..we've been there I'm sure all of us. Shouldnt he be facing the facts? he is way past the gym and he obviously not motivated to lose the weight that way. He must be around 400 pounds. But here's the truth. I wouldnt dare say anything to them although i feel i should. Would you??
