  1. James Marusek

New to format, just wanted to say hello.

I am 18 months post-op from RNY surgery. I lost my weight in the first 7 months and then entered the maintenance phase. I was diabetic prior to surgery and it has gone into remission right after surgery. Because of the diabetes, I exclude sugar from my diet. I get my sweet tooth satisfied with natural sugars found in fruits and milk, and with Splenda and Stevia. Generally weight gain in the maintenance stage is associated with grazing which causes the pouch to get bigger. Weight gain follows. Grazing on carbohydrates does not satisfy hunger. It is good to graze on Protein. In my case, I have included fats back into my diet because they satisfy hunger. If you must graze on sweets, I would recommend using Adkin's treats. They contain some fats that will satisfy and should not elevate your blood sugar levels.

    I'm 14 months out and I'm struggling.

Generally people gain back some of the weight after they bottom out. If you are at 14 months, I suspect that you have worked through the loss stage and have entered the maintenance stage. Individuals tend to gain weight back because they graze. This allows their pouch to grow and thus there is weight gain. Focusing on carbohydrates does not tend to fill one up and promotes grazing. So I suspect grazing on popcorn could be a problem. Consuming sugar can also be a problem but in your case, you have limited that from your diet. Grazing on Protein is good. In my case, I have included fats back in my diet. I am 18 months post-op from RNY. Fats take away hunger and I use fats to control my urge to graze. For example I drink one cup of coffee each day and I top it with home made whip cream. I also use real milk, butter, meat that is not lean. I also use Adkin's treats. I was diabetic prior to surgery and pay a lot of attention to reducing my sugar (processed sugar) to next to nothing. But generally I can satisfy my sweet tooth with Splenda and Stevia. Exercise is important. If you are not up and about doing normal daily activities, it is important to try and get back on some sort of exercise regime. Walking is good.

    Tattoos before and after surgery

I don't have any post surgery experience, but do have weight gain experience. I have a tattoo on my abdomen that I got before I put on 150 pounds. It has stretched a lot, almost to being unrecognizable. I imagine that shrinking would make the objects smaller, possibly less detail apparent but still recognizable. Let me know how it goes.
  4. Hi my name is Shaquana. I am 24 years old and I've been struggling with my weight for as long as I could remember. It wasn't until about 2 years ago until I decided that I didn't want to be in this body anymore. I was OK with being a big girl until my knees started aching always being out of breath with just walking up a couple of steps and shopping became harder. Today I am at my heaviest weighing in at about 318 lbs. That's not OK because looking at my family medical background history it's very unhealthy to be this weight and I decided enough is enough I'm gonna put a stop to my weight gain and try something new. So I decided to try to work out and eat better. But that would only work out for a little while and then I would go back to my old habits. So I decided to look into weight loss surgery. I haven't told anyone because I knew my family would be totally against it and think that I'm just trying to take the easy way out. The two people I did tell was my grandmother and my dad. My grandmother was totally for it because she knows my family medical history and she didn't want me to go down that same route as others in my family did. But I didn't get the same response from my dad. He was totally against it and told me not to do it so that kinda made me think twice about doing it. But then I thought to myself that I am an adult and it's my decision on weather if I want to do it or it if he can't except it than so be it. So I started the process which is very long and getting the OK from my insurance to pay for it. I know that it's not gonna be an easy road but I'm willing to take a risk . Thank you

    Pre-surgery

I am 51, 5'4" and weigh 220 lbs, most of my weight is right on my belly. I am a nurse and on my feet all day. I have controlled asthma, plantar fasciitis, arthritis in my ankles, yeast infections, abcesses and a bum left knee. I was skinny and athletic all my life even after 3 kids. However, at age 37, I left a bad marriage and was put on Paxil to help deal with anxiety and depression. In 6 months I ballooned to 170 lbs and then 4 years of university, while going through a 10 year expensive divorce battle, brought me up to 235 lbs. I have always been able to control my weight with diet and exercise prior to this weight gain, but nothing is working now. I have tried every type of diet and exercise program and yes, I might lose weight (one time up to 50 lbs) but immediately gain it back. Everybody in my family is obese. My mother has 12 siblings, my father 5 and everyone of them has metabolic syndrome so I know its just a matter of time. The writing is on the wall. After almost 15 years of yo-yo dieting, I have reached to point of giving up. I don't even see the point of watching what I eat and going to the gym anymore. Then after going to a surgeon who is connected to a weight loss practice, I started to get excited again. My BMI of 37 and lack of recognized comorbid conditions might not let me qualify for anything other than the band unless I am willing to pay out of pocket and even then I am not sure. I am tired of everyone telling me I look great, I carry my weight well, I could do it on my own and not have surgery etc. I attend a WLS presentation on Tuesday and can't wait.

    How's my calories?

Hey, I'll be here waitin for you! Good luck with everything. Seriously, just trust the process, make good choices and enjoy the NSV's! My rings fitting again was the first of many for me....what about you? (And, BTW, I had small weight gains and some pretty long stalls along the way, but the overall trend was obviously weight loss)

    Dec 3rd!

I'm a revision from lapband to sleeve so a little nervous over leak. Lapband 8 years and no weight loss and no weight gain but 2 partial knees and diabetic now! I'm ready for my sleeve! I'm ready for a healthy tool to assist my body to health! Best wishes to all.
  8. You need to weigh at the same time, preferably in the morning. By evening, you have 3 meals in your tummy/sleeve or in your intestines, which will affect your weight by evening. Water weight gain alone will tip the scales in the opposite direction. Also, muscle weighs more than fat, so as you're cutting back on calories and exercising, you are building muscle. Before surgery I had major problems with lower leg edema (Fluid buildup) and without the Lasix I could easily pack on 4-5 pounds of water in my body and legs. Thankfully that has eased up. I'm 8 days Post-OP and have seen a drop in weight since surgery. I'm now about 31 pounds down since beginning this journey. Good luck!
  9. Hello Sleevers, I weighed myself in the am and was 238. Yay!! 10 pounds in 8 days. Now I weigh myself this evening and I'm 240. I'm only drinking Protein shakes and a half cup of Soup for lunch. Total calories is about 470. I'm also walking at a brisk pace for an hour for exercise. It's not the calories. The only thing diffrent today was that I managed to get about 58 ounces of Water down. So, I think this could be just water weight and it will all work it's way out eventually. Has anyone else had or seen this?
  10. Hi Everyone...I'm new to this site, as well as this journey. Tipping the scale has always been a huge fear factor for me...and yet I've managed to do it several times. The smallest I've been ever in adult years was 120lbs, and I was only 21. I managed to ride the roller coaster of weight gain in small increments and eventually skimmed the edge of the 140lb mark until I was about 26...and pregnant. By the time I gave birth to my son, I was a whopping 227lbs. The weight didn't melt away in my post pregnany workouts. It took a lot of work, appetite suppresant pills, water aerobics and a bunch of whinning. But my body finally gave in, and allowed me to maintain a more curvaceous physique where I hovered over the realm of 160-165lbs. It took time to accept that I would probably never get to 120lbs again, but at least I was comfortable. Fastforward 10 years later, and I am sick to my stomach every time I step on the scale at the doctor's office, or in my bathroom at home. I never imagined that I would weigh 200lbs or more. As of today, I weigh 236lbs, and my body is screaming at me. My once small frame is proportionately lopsided as my stomach bulges out of anything I wear. I refuse to wear pants, unless I absolutely have to wear them...and that is usually when all of my dresses are unavailable waiting to be dry cleaned or washed on the gentle cycle. This summer I found myself buying dresses as often as I could, because I was comfortable. Pants restrict me, and searching for a shirt or blouse to hide the muffin top and wide hips is not a convenience. I remember the first time the scale bypassed the 190 mark and landed on 201. I was devasted. I kicked into high gear and tried every type of diet you can think of...including Weight Watchers. I joined several weightloss clinics and received B12 shots and more appetite suppressant pills. The journey was hard and depressing. I ordered every workout DVD you can think off, including the latest and greatest Shawn T's T25. Check out the rest of my story! http://www.bariatricpal.com/user/240301-fatdiva14/

First off, congratulations on your weight loss. I think it is common for some individuals who undergo weight loss surgery to gain some of the weight back. And normally when a woman has a child, it is common to have a little weight gain. So a weight gain of 10 pounds does not seem excessive. To maintain your weight loss, it is back to basics of Protein intake, food volume, Vitamins and exercise. I have also heard that the stomach heals after about 1 1/2 years and begins to absorb 100% of the calories from food instead of 70%. I do not know this for a fact. I am 1 1/2 years from RNY surgery, so I should see this effect around now. If this is true, then it will mean that I may have to cut my caloric intake.

    Beware of the UN-fill !!!

My update! I had an Upper GI today at Kaiser and the bariatric surgeon emailed me with results within an hour of me leaving the office. He said "looks better" so then I ask "so what's the plan from here"? He said that it is better but my esophagus is still a little dilated, so he said give it one more month and from there he feels confident to do a fill to get me back on track without doing another UGI. When I saw the barium go right through and collect down in my lower stomach quickly compared to when they did it 7 weeks ago where even some jiggling and dancing around for 15 minutes kept the barium above the band. This almost 30lbs weight gain since my band was unfilled has been quite depressing. I had to go up a few sizes in clothes, sell my track day to my favorite track because I had no leathers to wear and just feel huge in general. I know others are struggling with more weight than that and my friends say "you look great" but I feel enormous and miss my entire wardrobe of clothes and jackets that didn't make me look frumpy! :-/ So we shall see what happens in a month. WOuld be nice to start getting some fill back. I know I wont be going back to where I was before..toooo tight. I learned my lesson to not put up with behaviors that are not "normal" and to get back to bandster portions again. I have been working hard to reduce portions, calories, working out etc. It is discouraging to STILL see the scale go up, but it seems to have slowed down. Hoping for at least a maintain for now if not tiny loss! I am just so happy to keep my band for now. It did what it was supposed to do and had been doing for years..keep my weight off. I want that back!!

Official Ongoing Gastric Sleeve Maintenance Thread

Thanks so much feedyoureye! Can you share more about your experience on 5:2. It sounds like it is a permanent way of eating and not just a diet? I feel like every month I am craving carbs and making poor choices with little to no control or restriction and I've learned how to eat around my sleeve and I'm worried. Additionally, I feel like my body fat composition is changing significantly more than my mere 5-7 lb weight gain, so it is depressing me. I used to be a size 4 and now and a solid barely size 6. Overall, I'm still happy with that but do feel "heavy" like I used to before WLS. I just feel like I can "get away with it" and therefore I CAN make the poor choices that I'm making. Basically, I need a reality check and need to get my eating back in order so I'm thinking I need to do the Pouch/sleeve test and then do the 5:2. Can you share your experience with 5:2? what do you eat on your 5 days and what do you eat on your 2 days? Do you have a good official website? anything sleeve related to know about doing the 5:2? Thank in advance for sharing! Lisa
  14. I had my surgery in 2008 i was 415 pound i was 147 pounds when i found out i was 6 weeks pregnant. even before pregnant i had alot of restriction and was always dehydrated but rather gain back weight i just kept the restriction. when i found out i was 6 weeks pregnant i had 3 cc taken out of my band because i didnt want to chance having a misscarage or any problems with my baby, which left me with no restriction at all. I gained 20 pounds with in the first week and had swelling and i am still gaining weight at an insane rate atleast 5 pounds a week im in the gym almost 4 times a week for 35 minutes to an hour on the eliptical i and i eat alot of fruit and veggitables and i cant understand why in gaining so much weight im now 11 weeks pregnant and weigh 185 pounds. my obgyn has done test and all my brood work looks fine im just getting upset becasue im watching what im eating and exercising and cant seem to keep a steady normal weight gain. has anyone else gained alot of weight durring there pregnancy?

    Bra size

I didn't think about needing new bras! I don't want to lose all of my boobies. I hope my weight loss is proportional like my weight gain has been. ... but I can lose all of my stomach!

    Thoughts on sugar free?

Sugar will just slow down ur weightloss. The whole point that I was given is your 1st year is your golden year. U want to lose all u can. Cutting out sugars, starches and bread until u meet your goal weight is critical. Then u have to slowly re-introduce them making sure they don't cause weight gain. But as they say it's a life style change. I have easily given up all of the above but I'm just 2 weeks post op. Good Luck to you!
  17. I gained 8 pounds! I was mad! Lol. Nobody warned me about the IV fluid weight gain and I had so much on my mind I didn't even consider that happening. But it comes off fast. Rest assured!
  18. I gained 11 pounds in the 3 nights I had to stay, very disappointed in the huge weight gain. I did lose it in 4 days though and I'm still losing a pound a day. Down 26 pounds since my journey began in April. Today I got out my size 14 jeans and they fit, not tight at all in fact they were falling off me. Boy I was dancing in my room with joy!
  19. Hello All, I was sleeved on November 4th, 2014 and released November 5th. During my stay in the hospital, I received 5 - 6 bags of IV Fluid. When I came home, I weighed myself and saw I had a 10 pond weight gain. The night of the 5th, I went to the bathroom like clockwork, every 2 hours. This morning I was only up by about 2 pounds. I'm assuming that this is the Water weight from the IV's and it will eventually come off. Has anyone else has this experience? If so, how long does it take for the water weight to come off?

    Week 6: May 27-31st Sleevers

What's really weird to me is how different I feel just those 3 little pounds of weight gain. I feel fat again. I know its completly mental cuz I couldn't possibly look any different but I can't shake the feeling. So I have cut more calories and exercised harder. Any other ideas to get over this now over 2 month stahl? I knew stahls were going to happen but everything I read said it would last a week or two weeks. Not only has mine lasted this long but it happened only 3 months out. Am I alone in thinking there must be something wrong? I go for my 6 month check up on the 21st. It will be sad if I weight the same that I did at my 3 month check up.
  21. For those of you who have AETNA, be careful about your weight gain. I have AETNA open access and I called the insurance company to verify because I was told previously that it was ok as long as there is no net gain at the end of my 3 months. WRONG! There cannot be any weight gain during your 3 month or 6 month weigh-ins with your PCP or surgeons office. You will be denied. Make sure you have lost weight each time you go in to weigh-in. With that being said make sure you know what your policy entails.
  22. ThinnerMe2015

    I was denied!

I think they denied you because you hadn't done the 6 months of nutritional meeting alone, I don't think it had nothing to do with gaining 2 lbs. That would make no sense, maybe once you've completed the 6 months of meetings it will be a different outcome. I mean people gain weight all the time I hardly doubt the 2lb weight gain played a factor in their decision

    November sleevers in Mexico?

Becca, Thank you so much for being so candid and telling your story that was so poignant! It takes alot of courage to talk about the emotions that come with descrimination that sometimes feels like it takes away your power. Congratulations for being your own advocate, moving forward and making bold choices for your own life. I applaud you! Some of my struggles were similar to yours and some were different. I happened to be a "beanpole" growing up with frizzy, naturally curly hair and glasses. I say all this to make the point that even though I was skinny didn't mean I fit in...As I got married and had children ( 4 of them to be exact) My body decided it didn't want to lose weight. I too gained alot when I was pregnant with each child and never could really lose much afterwards, 20 pds. hear and there. But each time I lost, I would inevidably gain it back and then some. It was a steady climb up the weight gain "ladder." I am now 51. The wake up call was when I kept exercising, eating right and yet I would still gain weight. I blamed alot of the medications I'm on. Then my last dr. visit was like somebody snapped me out of a dream. "It looks like we will have to put you on a second blood pressure medication." I realized I was walking down the wrong road and with that decided I was taking charge of my health and my life and making a change. I decided to walk "the road less traveled." So, on this forum, it is nice to walk the road with others, like you! I hope we can encourage each other along the way. I have no reservations about the decision, I'm so ready! Just with losing 20 pds. on my pre-op diet, I notice when I go out that people talk to me more, respond to me more, hear what I'm saying. I don't feel so invisible. But my response from my immediate family members has been less than. Meaning, I would like them to celebrate my weight loss and yet, I usually get silence or them making some comment about how they are unable to lose weight, in other words the focus is on them. I think that is why this forum is a great relief to me because we are going through this together and can praise and celebrate our choices and accomplishments together. Tomorrow is my big day! flying to San Diego, having surgery in Tijuana on Friday! I can't wait!

    I was denied!

Now I'm scared! At my first weigh in they explained to me that if I gained even 1 pound the insurance would deny me and i would have to start the 4 month process all over again. I am trying to eat right and drink lots of water like they have told me to do but i i got on the scale 2 days before 2nd weigh in and it said i gained 2 pounds! I had to take water pills for 2 days before my appointment so that when i weighed in it said i lost 4 pounds! It's crazy i have become obsessed i know its all water weight because 2 days later my weight was back up 2 pounds. I have 2 more weigh ins and I'm afraid I won't make it. On top of everything else I'm an insulin diabetic on hospital grade concerated insulin that causes massive weight gain and they won't take thatinto cconsideration.

    Lap Band in 2008

Hey there. So...I had the lap band in 2008 and had a pretty stable and successful lap band life up until last year. I started at 225 and the lowest I got was about 165. My goal is around 155-160 so I was pretty close. Last year, around this time of year, I started having a lot of issues PBing and I could barely keep anything down. This went on for a few months and it was very difficult because I moved to a new state and the doctor there was giving me problems about scheduling an appointment because I had the surgery elsewhere. After dealing with it for so long, getting frustrated then finally throwing up blood, i decided to go to the ER. They unfilled me completely and said I had some reflux along with pre-ulcer symptoms. They advised me to keep it unfilled for a while and follow up with a lap band doctor. Well, then I had to move again for work to another state. So in the process of all that, I haven't had it refilled again since then. With that said....I'm now back up to 210lbs. That's about a 40lb weight gain from where I was this time last year. :-( Discouraged and disappointment doesn't even begin to explain how I feel. It took so long to get to the weight I was comfortable with. After moving it took months to finally get an appointment scheduled with a lap band doctor where I'm living now and I have an appointment for next week. In the photos you can see me at my heaviest and lightest. I'm not all the way back where I was but I'm almost there. The picture of me in blue button down sweater is recent and feel like that's going to be my "heavy" picture again. I feel like I'm starting all over again.
