20 month mark but not losing weight.

once you get close to a normal BMI (which you are), it's really hard to lose weight. It could be your body is happy where it is, so it's going to be a fight to get more off. Not that it can't be done, but... And getting down to a 27 BMI is pretty amazing. The average loss for bariatric patients is about 70% of excess weight, and only 10-15% make it down to a normal BMI. So your accomplishment at this point is actually pretty amazing... also, I should add that at 20 months out, most of us have stopped losing. That's not to say it's impossible to lose more, but 18-ish months out is kind of where most of us naturally stop. My weight loss stopped at 20 months out, too.

    Is this it?

That's what the plastic surgeon and bariatric surgeon at follow-up recently said to me. As I said: loose skin is a huge mind f*ck.
  3. Hello all - I just started the process for Gastric Sleeve surgery after doing a lot of research on my own. My insurance requires 6 month on a nutrition program, which thankfully I am already in Month 5. The part that has me nervous is the referral requirement. I really have not had a steady primary care physician for the past 6 years - mostly due to the fact that I’ve been so ashamed of my weight. So I really don’t know if I can just walk into a Dr’s office as a new patient and ask for a referral. Can I ask my OBGYN? Not sure if she would be open, but I can try. I have a BMI of 43 along with high blood pressure and sleep apnea so from that sense I don’t believe qualification is an issue. I have completed the initial application for the bariatric surgery clinic and am waiting for them to contact me for next steps. I am concerned about the referral becoming a blocker. I would appreciate it if anyone who has gone through a similar situation can share their experience or advice. Thank you!

    Food Before and After Photos

Update. Got my cinnamon SmartCakes. HIGHLY recommend, they are really good. I just saw that you can buy them from Bariatric Pal too! I’ll let you know when we get the buns.
  5. It's understandable to second guess yourself. I tried for years to lose the weight on my own, but it'd take me a YEAR to lose 20 pounds and a month to gain it back with interest when I gave up out of frustration. Eventually I had to face facts. I wouldn't be around to watch my nieces grow up if I didn't do something about my weight. I was 389 pounds when I finally decided to look into bariatric surgery. I'd been coming up with excused for YEARS as to why it wasn't for me. Truth was I didn't believe I'd have the willpower to stick with it. But, surprisingly, it's been relatively smooth. There was this one girl in my bariatric surgeons office that comes to mind when you talk about backing out. She went through the whole process THREE times! She got right up to her surgery date and backed out and had to start all over again. I was talking to her in the surgeons office before my pre-surgery appointment and asked her why she'd go through all that and then not have the surgery. She said she was scared and then asked me why I didn't seem to be. I told her I'd gone through a much scarier surgery so this was like a walk in the park by comparison. I honestly don't know if she went through with it that time or if she's going though the process for a FOURTH time. Clearly she wanted to lose the weight, but the unknown of the surgery was terrifying to her. The unknown can be a really scary, I get that. But think of how much better you'll feel losing that extra 80 pounds. Who cares what your PCP thinks (vanity? pfft, a 37 BMI is still obese and your PCP is a friggin' MORON!) or if your mother doesn't approve, this is YOUR life and YOUR body! The surgery will help you become a healthier YOU! In the end though, the choice is still very much your own. Whether you go the conventional dieting route or the WLS route is still your decision and no one else's. Maybe write out a list of pro's and con's. Or read success stories to pump yourself up. Either choice you make, I wish you the best.
  6. I started this journey in January 2019 after a visit to Joslin for a type 2 diabetes check-in. I knew I was very overweight, but had never been recommended for Bariatric surgery! I thought that was for the “other fat people”, you know, 500+ pounds. I was kidding myself. I took the recommendation seriously and went to a meeting for those interested in Bariatric surgery. I decided I wanted to try some lifestyle and food changes myself before I made such a big decision. It was my teenage son telling me he was worried about me not living through my fifties that kept me moving in the right direction. This is probably the time to tell you that I have always enjoyed healthy eating and usually made pretty good choices with food, except for the times that I didn’t🙄. For me, eating is only a part of the extra pounds. I am the main character in a genetic horror film! The film stars me, before major weight gain, starting off with Metabolic syndrome (that includes Hyperlipidemia (crappy HDL), High blood pressure and high blood sugar), Arthritis (2 surgeries, 1 procedure, cervical and lumbar radiculopathy and stenosis- for almost 2 years, unable to work or even stand for more than 15 mins before excruciating pain set in), PCOS (hormones, fertility drugs, hysterectomy), and finally the cherry on top of the extra pounds? Type 2 diabetes and sleep apnea. So, after I changed some of my behaviors, food choices and had an RFA of L4, L5 and SA, I was ready for help to move into the next phase. This phase began on December 30, 2019 at 204lbs. I am now 1 week away from my VSG surgery and feel ready and excited about feeling better, eating better, moving better and ultimately being here, not only for myself, but my son. Today is the 7th day of my pre-op diet and I weigh 180.2 lbs. I feel proud and know that this surgery will be an amazingly powerful tool to have on my journey.

    Day 3 Post Sadi-S

@STLoser, I honestly don't even take as many vitamins as recommended, nor do I eat as much protein as recommended. I have done so much research and have learned so much after having this surgery, I was told that I would never really be able to eat many veggies, that was bull, I eat more veggies than anything and I suppose that might be the reason that I can get away with taking a bariatric vitamin every other day as opposed to 3 every single day. My labs/blood work always comes back as normal. My only issue is that I am anemic so I do have to,take more iron than most people do. It wasn't the surgery though, I have always been anemic off and on for as long as I can remember. By the way, I am not promoting not following doctors orders, especially since every doctor has different instructions for their clients. I have learned that there really needs to be more research about these types of surgeries. I know that the moto is protein first, but I have learned that animal protein is horrible for humans to consume from a health perspective and it is not necessary. So many veggies, beans, pasta made out of beans and legumes have so much protein. I do have to say that my taste buds and tolerance of certain foods changes continuously. Many food choices are trial and error. Even the vitamins, for me I would say, has been trial and error. I am glad to find others that have had the surgery, it seems to be rare. I opted for this surgery because it gives a person a better chance at sustaining ones weight-loss. What made you go for this particular surgery?
  8. I will be 18 months post op when I have my breast lift/augmentation, tummy tuck, and arm lift in January. Both my plastic surgeon and Bariatric surgeon are supportive of this timeline, both state that patients who have PS post Bariatric surgery do better maintaining their weight in the long term. I’m so excited to be rid of my flappy bat wings! It was near 100 degrees today, yet I was in a long sleeved shirt to cover my awful arms :(

    Is this it?

of course she should be allowed - but only 10-15% of bariatric patients make it to a normal BMI, so she's already one of the few who pulled that off. also, that range you gave - it depends on age, too. I don't know how old she is, but a lot of doctors these days like their older adult patients at a 23-27 BMI. Older folks in that range have the lowest mortality rate.

Is this all normal? Feeling so worried.

Call your bariatric nurse and ask to be safe there is probably a number in those papers you got

    Protein trial

Well, I have found some to purchase on Bariatric pal. Amazon has some too. I have been researching through company websites, and just googling everything about the products that I think I might like. I have to avoid things like caffeine, and I don’t want everything to be super sugary. I spend a lot of time reading reviews and adding prices up on different websites to try to get the best prices. Next step I am going to e-mail the companies that I can not find samples for to ask about purchasing samples from them if possible. Who knows maybe soon there will be sample packs of everything available. They don’t know there’s a market for them if people don’t ask. 😁

    Food stuck in throat

I went to my doctors office yesterday because I felt that that food getting caught in my throat sensation was getting worse. I started having issues with drinkable protein yogurt and swallowing pills. I spoke to the nurse on the phone and she told me to come into the office. I asked to me seen by an MD. Three days ago I noticed a bulge the size of a softball sticking out on my right side under my breast bone. I’ve also had pain on my lower back. When I went into the office, the NP came into the exam room. She was very dismissive of my symptoms that I have been experiencing in conversations with her. I told her that I was told that I would be able to see an MD and if I couldn’t, I was going to call my PCP and go see another bariatric specialist. She left the room and came back with a surgeon. The NP examined me and said I had a hernia and asked me if I ever had issues swallowing. I haven’t. Seconds later my surgeon came in. He is well know and people come from all over the country come to see him for bariatric surgery with him. That’s why I chose him. He examined me and said that I didn’t have a hernia and the bump was tissue that is healing. He sent me to get an X-ray with contrast die and that’s when I learned I had stenosis. The opening of my stomach was narrowed due to scar tissue. On Monday I have another operation scheduled for my surgeon to remove the scar tissue. He said that this happens with 2 percent of patients after surgery. After surgery I have to go back to the liquid food plan and start over. I’m feeling really scared and hoping that one day I’ll be able to eat normally and healthy. I’m worried that something happened to me and I may have to live with a disability for the rest of my life. I’ve lost 25 pounds since my surgery day, which was July 20th. I’m not that excited about that because of these complications that I’ve been having.
  13. First, let’s be clear, not everyone is here because they have an addiction to food. Obesity is caused by several different factors, one of which you mentioned but let me remind you of the others; genetics, age, race, endocrine situation, neurological disorders, stress, lack of activity, and calorie intake with respect to activity due to short or long-term lack of mobility. The binder, like the surgery is a tool designed to help us, not offend. I think the dietician’s do a hell of a job trying to present the information in a way thats beneficial for everyone and perhaps no specific for each individual. That’s where you come in. I too only had one appointment with my dietician, but I’ve exchanged emails, and she urges me to continue to reach out if I have any questions or need clarification or additional recommendation. Your situation may qualify for certain accommodations, and less restrictions, but instead of complaining express your concerns to the people that will be helping you in your journey, and know your unique health situation. Also, give your Bariatrics center the feedback on the perceived tone of nutrition information in your binder. Like everything else in the world, change for the better comes after you are able to look at things through a different lens. Wishing you the best.

    Celebrate 4-in-1

I tried Celebrate sample packs. The chewable vitamins tasted horrible. I did get 2 packets of 4 in 1 but the vitamins tasted so bad, I threw the packets out. I suspect the 4 in 1 just has their vitamins in powder added to protein shake pack. Find a brand of Bariatric chewable vitamin you like and switch. BARIATRIC FUSION chewable are the cheapest and complete, including calcium. Different fruit flavors but avoid the ORANGE as it is really overwhelmingly strong flavor. For protein shakes, I have been drinking pre-made FAIRLIFE Nutrition Chocolate. I really like it and only 150 cal with 30g protein, 2 carbs in 11 oz serving. Stats: 5'1", age 67, female. Highest weight: 245. BMI 41. Surgery Date: May 28, 2020. Weight at surgery: 211. VSG.
  15. I weigh daily, I use a bariatric app that I log my weight and measurements in once a week though.

    DS or RNY

actually, ASMBS (American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric surgery) now recommends that sleeve patients (which would include DS since they have a sleeved stomach) avoid NSAIDs as well. So that may not make as much of a difference as it once did...
  18. most companies use your starting BMI - but I don't want to say yours will in case they're one of the minority that doesn't. You could always call them and ask. Or your bariatric clinic might know if they've dealt with that company before.
  19. Dumping syndrome can happen to anyone after having any type of bariatric surgery. Pasta, rice, and noodles and bread all have sugar in then so the suggestion is to eat minimally. They are carbs.

    Opinion

I'm on maintenance and eat low-carb, low-fat snacks to satisfy my sweet tooth. They are harder to find, since Keto is all the rage now, but I get most of mine from the Bariatric Pal store. I still have to watch how much of them I eat. There's a temptation to overdo it because they are "safe" foods.

    Final meal before surgery

I was on a liquid only diet for the week leading up to my surgery. No meals to be had at all. You'll find that every doctor has a different pre-op diet plan. Some want liquids only for 1 week, some want liquids only for 2 weeks, some allow for liquids all day and then a small dinner of lean protein and veggies. My suggestion would be to call your bariatric office and ask for clarification, explaining that your nurse said to have a decent meal the night before your surgery but that your paperwork conflicts with what the nurse said. They should be happy to clarify it for you. I wouldn't think that a single meal before surgery would undo the liver shrinkage to that much of a degree, but the conflicting info is something that you'll definitely want to get clarified.
  22. Hi All, I have just been told by the bariatric nurse to eat a decent meal the evening before my surgery, and drinks lots of water between 12-5am as these will help me recover quicker. My paperwork says do not be tempted to have a large meal the day before surgery as this reduces the liver shrinking effects of the diet. What have your experiences been? I'm very confused now.

You need to see a gastroenterologist. That could be a stricture or scar tissue build up. Can you reach out to your bariatric surgeon first? They probably know who to send you to. Your pcp is not the right person to see. Sent from my SM-A102U using BariatricPal mobile app
