    Morning wood and other things

ARF! I had to laugh when I read this - NOT at you guys! I woke up with a raging woody this morning, first time in a long time! I got checked for testosterone 6 months ago, pre-surgery and was at 150 ng/dl !!! I started on injections twice a month. My voice deepend, facial hair is thicker and libido went through the roof (my poor wife!). I just went back for a 6 month blood test, this after loosing 85+ pounds. I am going back to the doc to see the results tomorrow.
  2. Just turned 23 and I'm one month into my 6 month supervised weight loss. I calculated that if things go well I should have my surgery sometime around August/September. My concern is I will be starting Nursing school around that time. How long after surgery can I go back to school? What if I get too far behind? How has anyone adjusted to college life after WLS(i.e. socializing, partying, dating, etc) As a nursing student I'm sure my life will be extremely busy, but I still want to have fun.
  3. I just had to take a 100 question computer test with lots of questions. Then I had to sit with the psychologist for about 30 minutes and talk about my weight loss struggles and talk about how this surgery would not solve my food addiction and I need to ensure I do the head work as part of this process. I am still a month out from surgery but already know if I see myself slipping to my old ways I will be scheduling some time with the psychologist on a regular basis if needed. Good luck to you but it should be a quick and easy process for you!
  4. Hello, my name is Judymarie and I would like to know if any body out there can answer my question regarding hair loss with the lap band? I have experience some shedding about 8 months after surgery and would like to know if any one has any helpful tips on how to stop the shedding? Thanks ,

Hair loss with the lap band.

I think I agree with the anesthesia people. I wonder how many of us were malnourished before being banded? I wonder how many of us ate crappy junk food with no nutritional value, but didn't lose our hair? My hair is falling out too, but I really haven't noticed any bald spots.

Hair loss with the lap band.

Thanks for the tip on the Biotin. I will get some today and see if that helps a bit. More than anything is is reassuring that to know that it won't all fall out. I am just amazed at how fast the change in my hair occurred. It seemed that most of the loss happened over just a 2 week period. I have noticed the loss is slowing down some. During those initial weeks I would run my hands through my wet hair and they would come out with 20-30 strands each time.....now I am down to about 5 strands. I am not sure if it is the Nioxin or if it is just slowing down on its own. Thanks again for the info on the Biotin. I will try ANYTHING at this point to save my remaining locks!
  7. I too decided on the band. i wanted less invasive and a slower weight loss. you have a better chance of exercising and tightening the loose skin. But good luck and I'll be rooting for you
  8. Well, I've completed the 6 months of supervised weight loss with my dr and I've completed my psych evaluation. My insurance company is waiting for the last piece of info from the dr's office and they're ready with an approval. My dr's office is saying that even if they get an approval this coming week, it'll still be at least 2 more months until surgery! Anyone have any luck with it getting scheduled sooner than expected? 8 months just seems like a loooong time to make people wait [emoji53]

    Newb here...

Welcome Maddie. Yes I think what you're feeling is totally normal! I don't have my surgery date yet, but when my doc told me I should consider having this surgery I went through those emotions about going through this surgery for something "self inflicted." Then I went to the seminar put on by the surgeon, and the things he said made me feel so much better. Namely, the fact that 3 things come into play - genetics, environmental, behavioral. He said genetics loads the gun and environmental fires it, and then we develop these behaviors that are extremely hard to reverse. He also shared statistics that when it comes to those 100lbs overweight or more, even with a combination of diet, exercise, pills AND counseling, you still only have a 2% chance of succeeding at the loss on your own and keeping it off. 98% will never succeed. When you hear all of that I think it takes away a little of the guilt over what have YOU done to yourself because there are so many with this problem, and so few succeed... so obviously it's not just you. I tried to start looking at it as a life-saving surgery. Even though I am not sick enough that I will die tomorrow without surgery, that's kind of like saying I don't need to stop smoking because it won't kill me tomorrow (I'm not a smoker, but just sayin'). This life is unhealthy and is slowly killing me. Also look at it as improvement... what I mean is if you had only one foot and it made your life harder and you could get yourself a prosthetic foot and get your life back, wouldn't you do that? Now what if you lost that foot because of diabetes caused by your weight... does that make you any less deserving of getting yourself the prosthetic foot and getting your life back? I don't think so :wink0: I am rambling but... I know how you are feeling and wanted to tell you some things that helped me to get over that guilt. I have realized that by doing this I am FINALLY doing what I have never done before, which is deciding that I am worth it and I deserve a better life. Also every since we set the consult date with the surgeon hubby and I have both been going through the mourning the loss of food. We've been eating all of our favorite bad stuff and sort of saying goodbye. It was worst the first week or two and kind of wearing off now but I expect I'll probably go through it again when my surgery date gets set. I think it's only natural. This way of life is what we know and it's scary to change it... but it is all going to be so worth it in the end!

    Sleeved May 14th, 2010

Thanks and congrats on loss already!!!! Good job!
  11. What a wunderful new period in your life! My surgeons practice actually asks all female patients to use 2 types of birth control during the first 18-24 months post surgery. There are a number of reasons why, even with a sleeve, there is malnutrition that you suffer when losing the weight, the high amount of Protein is very hard on your kidneys and anemia is common as are vit B, A, D and Calcium deficiencies. hair loss is a big complaint due to the shock to the system and malnutrtion. When you become pregnant the fetus requires nutrition that you're body may not be able to provide without detriment to you or the baby. What leads to infertility for so many women is the excess estrogen stored in all the extra fat we carry, therefore, drop the fat and boom fertility increases! I can tell you about my closest friend who suffered from PCOS and was unable to get pregnant until she had Gastric Bypass. She had open surgery nearly 10 years ago and lost a good 50 lbs when she began actively trying to get pregnant (against medical advice). She was blessed with a healthy bohy and relatively few complications despite being 12 months out from surgery when she delivered! Since then she has had 2 other sons but has gained some weight back and recently lost a pregnancy. The surgery was a success for her and she was able to get pregnant right away, she would tell you she doesn't regret any of it! I'm so happy for you and your husband, I pray your surgery is also a success and that many babies are in your future! Please keep us posted on your journey! :-)
  12. Thanks, everyone. I received a message from Doralisa at Dr. Rumbaut's office today. I haven't yet scheduled an appointment for the surgery, but I did check on airfares to Monterrey; luckily Mexicana has a daily direct flight from Chicago. A nagging part of me says that I should either live with being fat or else give conventional weight loss yet another try. But in my heart I know I need a little extra boost -- a crutch, perhaps -- to help my body, not to mention my mind, shed 100 unneeded pounds. I'm in my late 40s and I have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, back problems, and a wonky knee -- not to mention a spare chin! So I'm going to take the plunge just after Labor Day if I can get on the surgery schedule. Thanks again. I'll let you know when I schedule the surgery. Zoe
  13. Weight loss plateus are really, really normal! Everyone experiences them. It doesn't make them less frustrating, for sure. For me, hormones can add a layer to the fluctuations in my weight. When I'm ovulating and then the week before my period are times I just know I'm not losing. I started keeping an eye on my sodium intake, as that can be a factor, too. Butterthebean has a great link in his signature that talks about plateaus post-op. Since you're still pre-op, here is the link to an interesting article I read recently: http://www.npr.org/blogs/health/2013/07/29/202655878/how-to-escape-the-diet-plateau ~Kat
  14. Thanks, I'm pulling my hair out over here because I was expecting Af and this pink I'm seeing didn't seem right. I have been looking at things on the internet but what I have found thus far has my mind all over lol. And what topped it off is that my 2yr ( adopted) came came up to me out of nowhere and was pointing at my stomach talking in his language and when I asked him to repeat it he walked away! We all looked like what just happened lol. I don't know all this is giving me a headache thanks for the response and happy birthday to ur baby
  15. So i had my third follow up today and I've loss 4lbs in two weeks. im 7 weeks out and only lost 15lbs since surgery. im told I'm not eating enough of calories and should be eating 1000 to 1200 by now and this is why I'm slow to lose. That's alot to consume. i plan on getting that by protien shakes mainly because she told me focus only on protien and vegetables. anyone who said this is the easy way, told a huge fib because this is by far not easy and I don't know how im going to manage more because I'm so full for so long. Today, I ate about 2 oz of salmon and about 4 pieces of broccoli florets for lunch at 12:30, my appointment wasn't until 3:50 and i was still full. i tried to drink a bit in between but that was a task. there's got to be a better way, any suggestions?
  16. Ok I would doubt your experience could be much differen than mine. My actual surgery was only 30 min! I was really nervous too, since it was my first surgery. I got there at 6am and waited until about 11am. There were 2 or 3 other surgeries before mine. They had me stay in my room, no food or liquids. They did have me hooked up to an IV though. They put compression socks on, and had a little machine that squeezed my ankles so there weren't blood clots. About 2 or 3 nurses came to take me down to the prep room. They put a hair cap on me and wheeled me down. When I was here they took my blood pressure, etc. Then they injected this stuff into my IV and I said bye to my mom and I passed out! When I woke up I was so confused lol. I thought the surgery was over, but really that was just to calm me down and to put me to sleep, when I woke up they were wheeling me into the OR. They lifted me onto the operaing table and nurses were putting warm blankets around me. (I was still really out of it and tired, not at all nervous amazingly) Then I remember looking behind me and a nurse was putting this milky-white stuff into my IV and I don't even remember if they had me count but the last thing I remember was my doctor holding my hand telling me not to worry. Next thing I knew, the nurses in the post-op room were waking me up. I didn't feel any pain or anything. After that it's a blur for the next hour or so. But they took me back to my room where my mom and b/f were waiting and put the machine back on my ankles. I think they gave me koolaid to drink and eventually I had to stand, then I had to walk to the door of the room, and then I had to walk down the hall. I didn't feel any pain and walked to the end of the hall on my first try up. After surgery my stomach...rather my abs sorta hurt and I was so freaked out about ripping something so I was always sure to get help getting up and down from a sitting position. But that only lasted a week. I didn't take ANY of my pain meds and I was fine. To date I have lost about 100 lbs and am only 20 from goal. I was nervous and I had many times when I doubted the band and myself--I thought that maybe I'd be one of the few it didn't work for, etc. But the band has given me back my life. Just keep that goal in mind and you'll be fine. I hope your surgery goes well...

    My Journey Begins

My journey has begun. I went to my initial consultation with Dr. Enochs today and he was very pleasant and easy to talk to. My BMI is 49  yeah because BCBS will not approve the lap band for a BMI 50 and over. He said that I will lose 100 over 2 years:lol:. Oh by the way, I lost 4 pounds since the dreaded day the scale entered the house:biggrin:. I have cut out the after dinner snacking and try to limit my carbs:angry:. I have bought a ton of sugar free Jello and do like that if I need to snack. I am drinking a minimum of 60 oz of water and going to Curves Mon – Thurs. I know I am on the right track to weight loss. I don’t want to get derailed again. I was sent home with a informational booklet and I was reading the nutritional and eating information aloud to my husband. He asked was that forever!!! I said this is a permanent lifestyle change and yes it is forever.

    I am now a Bandster

I was banded on August 1 at Rex Hospital. I was wheeled into the operating room at 8:42 am and I notice a car stereo in the wall with speakers. I only thought to myself “I wonder what music my doctor will be playing while he is installing the band.” I was strapped down to the table and told to breathe in the mask. I don’t even remember breathing in. I awoke around 11:00. I was very groggy and in severe discomfort. Not really pain. I was given morphine and then the shakes came. I could not get warm. I was then given demoral and then a shot of something for nausea. By 12:45 I was wheeled out the hospital and into my car for the ride home. After getting home, I just went to sleep for a while. I then took some Lortab and felt really good. Walked around the house and nap on and off for the day. Saturday, August 2, was the most painful day so far. It was mostly gas in my shoulders and upper stomach area. My port area is really sore. My step mom came over and kept my daughter overnight which was a blessing. My husband and I went to Wal-Mart to walk around some and to get my Gas X strips. I didn’t realize that it was Tax-free weekend and every school supply shopper was out in full force. We managed to get what we needed and to get out pretty fast. Sunday, August 3, was great. I woke up feeling refreshed and some gas pains. My port area is now every color of the rainbow and really sore. I wanted to go for a walk before it got hellishly hot outside. I walked for about a mile and it took my 30 minutes. After that I passed out in the bed for 2 hours. For the rest of the day I sipped on protein bullets mixed with water and ALL bran fiber water dink mix. I don’t feel hungry at all yet. Or least what felt like hunger before being banded. I hear my stomach rumbling but I don’t know if that is gas or hunger. I practice sipping every 15 minutes and managed to get down 60 oz of water and 50 grams of protein. Today is Monday, August 04, and I continue to feel better. My husband went back to work today and I am home alone. I took a 2 mile walk today. I will continue to sip on some protein water and just take it easy. My weight loss journey has started.
  19. Hi everyone. I'm new to this website, but not to the idea of WLS. I have seen the same surgeon twice before and both times was timid to have surgery. This time is different as is my outlook on my life. I want to have children and can't do that unless I lose the weight. I have tried diets with not much success. I'm looking forward to taking my journey to weight loss for the ultimate goal of being healthy enough to have children. I have a blog that I'm going to use to record my progress. I will post it at another time. I look forward to reading the threads and learning about everyone's stories. Spaz
  20. Angie, Yes I think traditionally the 6 mini meals is regarded as a good way to safely diet, but lap-band does have it's own rules for a reason. Although after surgery before you get restriction (bandster hell) my surgeon did recommend mini meals if needed. I'm at a point that I have good restriction and eat about 1/2 cup to cup of food per meal (not a 1/4 cup). Typically most people eat between 1000-1300 calories a day with the band. There all times when we all reach plateaus, but I've been banded for almost 7 months and have had consistent weight loss (about 2.5 pounds a week). Right now I can't really give you a lot of drawbacks. I've had great weight loss yet I'm still able to eat most foods. For me this has been great because I don't feel deprived like I would on a diet. Do your research and ask you Dr. all those questions - they are good ones. Good luck with your decision!
  21. Hi all, I was banded in 2007 and have not done well with weight loss. I have found a new physician for my aftercare education and fills and am hoping to still make this work for me. He suggested this forum for support and education. I am sure hoping to find it here.
  22. I know it just sucks (sucks,HA! get it? mints) that you can edit a post, but I've found no way of editing a title... Oh by the way, awesome loss!!
