  1. My surgery was on the 17th took under an hour and was perfect. No gas! However I woke up dry heaving which lasted 28 hours turns out I am allergic to hydrocodone. Two days and 3 anti nausea medicines and I was home. My drain site was the only tender spot. Today I am four days post op and feel like myself. Still have occasional stomach spasms which are decreasing and I was able to get 46 oz of water down. I have transitioned to clears which was a great change from broth and jello. I had amazing tomato soup! I couldn't finish it but it was great. I did have one issue. The steri strips peeled off today my incisions look great one is bruised where the stomach came out and the site where my drain was is ugly but the problem is I am apparently allergic to the tape. Skin came off with the tape so I have beautiful incisions and ugly raw spots all around them. Doc said put neosporin and band aids just on the sores not the incisions so I used 12 band aids and look ridiculous. Today I took my daughter to the doctor and she asked when my surgery was. When I told her it was 4 days ago she was amazed how great I was doing. So many have complained about weight gain from the hospital I weighted at home and was the same when I went in two days later I am down 8 lbs. good luck to everyone waiting! See you in the losers bench!
  2. Hey guys sorry it has taken me so long to reply. you can either choose 6 months of nutritional dietion meetings with your primary care or 3 months with your bariatric team. You also have to attend a support group and a psych eval as well as an upper gi xray exam. Also they drew my blood for b12 and thiamine levels. my last appt. is November 26th i am very worried that i won't get approved because of weight gain....I went from 273 at my first appt. to 275 by my next appt. and my third appt. i was at 271....but now i've went from 271 to 283 i'm scared they will deny me because i gained but that is the whole reason i'm needing this surgery is my weight embalance! My bariatric office called me 2 weeks ago and told me to start doing B12 injections once everyday fo two weeks because my levels were low but other than that everything has went pretty smooth. I'll keep you updated and hopefully i will get approved and have my surgery in early/mid December!

@@Ldimples I am so sorry about your dog. My family always had toy poodles when I was growing up. I can't say for sure but I am guessing the weight gain is due to swelling or Water retention, etc. It's good you're up and walking. Wishing you a continued good and speedy recovery.

    Long wait

I personally didn't but my mother in law has to have a revision on her bypass due to an entire failure and weight gain plus more, She also has to lose 60lbs and get her liver to shrink but she is highly dependent on her meds so i don't know where she'll go from here. I wish you all the best and motivation to push through your initial disappointment

    1. I don't think they are saying you failed to keep the appts. The wording they choose is off but I think what they are saying is you failed physician-supervised exercise and nutrition program that has regular visits every 2-4 weeks. The reason they put the 2-4 weeks bit in parenthesis is because they are explaining what type of doctor supervised program it is. 2. If you are unable to work because of you illness, have you applied for SSDI? If not, you should. 3. Since the requirement is that you must not gain weight and you did. Your PC should have documented why despite your best efforts you did gain weight. Namely that you tried but the meds caused you to gain. So it seems the key item missing is that there was no justification for your weights gains noted. 4. You can go forward with the appeal, but unless you think your PC will add those justifications in there and advocate for you, it might be worth your while find a new PC. Unfortunately you may need to start this process all over again under the new PC unless you can document how you are in constant pain awaiting this surgery. Even then they may want proof that the surgery will solve the problem.
  6. A lot of the weight will be from the IV fluids like others have said above, but also realize your body has gone through a traumatic experience and it will take up to a few weeks for all of the swelling to go down as well. This will also lead to a slight weight gain. Give it time and the weight will begin falling off. Though I lost a few pounds after surgery, the weight didn't start to pour off until after I went back to work six weeks later. Keep up the hard work. Things will even out before you know it. !
  7. Im not expecting anything within a few days of surgery, im 4 days post op and have gained 6 pounds, is that normal? Water weight maybe?

    7 Months Post Op

From someone who hasn't had surgery yet, please don't be a statistic! We all have spent the better part of our lives being statistics. Weight gain after diet statistics. % of fat American statistics. Do NOT be a gain after WLS statistic. Get your head back in the game, ladies! I'll be there with you one day and you might need to remind me, too!

    7 Months Post Op

I haven't even had my first apt yet, but, focus on what you have lost........65 lbs good for you! Maybe this is just one of those periods where you have tapered off, but if you stick with it, you will start losing again. The alternative is just weight gain and complications, so hang in there. I would give anything to lose 65 lbs, think of how good you look and the health benefits you've gained so far. Keep reading other posts, maybe there will be something suggested that will work for you.

    Just Keep Chipping Away

I love this sculpture. So much so that when I initially noticed it online I tracked down the actual artist that created it. It's a 3D rendering he made for a client that's planning on using it in their advertisement. One day I'd LOVE to have a sculptor re-create this piece or art or something close to it. It's near to my heart and to every that's struggled with weight gain and loss.
  11. I had a tummy tuck and my abs were sewn together in the process. It doesn't really add to the pain at all- I really had minimal recovery time, and the resulting look is certainly worth it. I couldn't immediately tell the difference, but people have commented how small my waiste has become (haha, if they only knew why!) and now in pictures I can see that my waiste is certainly smaller, which gives a nice final look. My doctor didn't really discuss it beforehand and after he said he sews everyone's abs shut just because it makes them much happier with the final look, doesn't really take much more time since they're already in there, and for most people is needed anyway since their abs are separate from weight gain or pregnancy. I say go for it.
  12. thanks for replies, I actualy figured out why i gained so much so fast and was extreamly swollen apparently i have a sodiuma allergy or my body is unable to process all the sodium and salt so i started limiting sodium from my diet and im at a steady weight gain now. i just have to read all labels...

    Weight gain before period?

Water retention is a necessary evil of the monthly visitor. It is worse if one consumes lots of processed and sodium laden foods and beverages. The retention is needed so that things actually "flow" out of the body, and once that begins to subside, the weight gain will also dissapear.
  14. Anyone else see a gain of a few pounds the week or even a few days before period? I know I haven't been eating different and the scale says I'm up 3 lbs? I guess this is what happens when you go from not having periods forever to actually getting them
  15. I gained 60 lbs throughout my entire pregnancy but most of the weight gain in the beginning was Water weight/swelling. I was SO PUFFY almost as soon as I found out I was pregnant! It was crazy. YAY hormones changes!

    2 years post-op gained 20lbs back.

I underwent my 1 1/2 year appointment with the nutritionist and doctor. One of the points I brought up was the story that I heard that the stomach begins to heal at 1 1/2 years and absorbs more calories. It turns out that is a "myth". The main reason for the weight gain (in the maintenance phase) is that individuals begin to graze and when they graze they expand their stomach and then take on more weight. They also said that after RNY surgery, the part of the stomach that absorbs sugars and fats has been cut away. Therefore if one eats too much sugars or fats, the intestines don't know what to do with this and pass it through the system (diarrhea). But as time goes on, the intestines begin to adapt and absorb sugars and fats. I am 18 months post-op and my pouch is still tight. I can tell because when I eat solid foods like steaks or chicken, at some point before I consume a cup, my stomach begins to warn me not to eat anymore. I attribute this tight pouch to my meal plan. From almost the beginning, I focused on consuming high Protein home-made Soups and chili. It is a softer food that because the ingredients were mixed had more flavor. Also it was easy to take the required amount using measuring cups and easy to heat using a microwave oven. Also the food went down smoother and didn't generate that painful experience when you eat too much. At the moment, I am about 10 pounds below my goal weight. I stay away from processed sugar. I rely on natural sugars found in fruits and milk, in synthetic sugar such as Splenda and other natural sugars such as Stevia. In the beginning if I grazed I concentrated on grazing on Proteins. But now I mainly graze on fats. Fats have the ability to take away hunger. I stay away from grazing on carbs. I do graze. But I also monitor my weight daily. I laid out what I was eating and my meal plan with the nutritionist. Their take was just keep doing what I am doing.

One Week - I Made It Thru!

I had surgery nov 13 th, had my first dr visit, down 11 lbs ( even after a 7 lb weight gain in the hospital from the iv) and diabetes gone!! Sugar completely normal already no more diabetes meds or cholesterol meds!!! This was the main reason i went through with this, my health. I backed out once but had the courage to finally do it, and it takes great courage. It was traumatic, although not too much physical pain and it gets a little easier every day. I am on a puréed diet now, trying to get as much fluid and protein as I can. My Dr said it gets easier and the first month is the hardest. All the best.

When you're ready to stop losing

You've obviously already done a great job Ginger and I think you have a great plan for moving forward into the maintenance stage. I really believe that gradual calorie increases followed by monitoring your body's response in terms of weight gain or loss is the way to go. BMI is a less than ideal measure of healthy weight, especially for those with a higher than average amount of muscle mass. I think your plan to get the body fat analysis is a terrific idea. I've never had one but would be very interested in your experience and what you learn from it. The rapid weight loss part of the journey was incredibly exciting and rewarding. But the maintenance stage was, for me, where the real fun began. It's one thing to prove to yourself that you can lose weight. It's quite another to discover that you really have made the all important lifestyle changes. That you can eat quite a "normal" diet and still maintain your weight. That you can manage your weight instead of it managing you. That you really, truly, absolutely are in control and lovin' the new you!!

    GOING TO SLEEP HUNGRY

Eh, it's a myth. Calories in + Calories out = Weight Loss or Weight Gain. There is no mythical beast that hides within you holding a clock who will add weight to your booty if you eat at 6:01p or even 11:35pm unless you've taken in more than you've burned. That's true for pre and post op.

    How's my calories?

@@Kindle is right. The scale will drive you crazy. Especially this soon after surgery that "weight gain" could be the transition to soft food, Water weight, normal body fluctuations that come with being a female. Eat your Protein, drink your water and get your exercise. It will happen.

    Not given a choice.....

There are a lot of things in life that we have no choice about. It is just what it is. Health problems as we grow older are bound to happen. They are offering you a solution to your weight gain. To me there is really no difference in the surgeries. All give restriction. All help you lose weight. All are a tool. The sleeve helps more with absorption of food while it is still in the stomach. Starts the break down before it goes into the small intestine....No matter. The issue seems to be that they are afraid your weight gain will continue due to your other issues. But it is YOUR choice whether you do it or not. It is your body and the decision is yours in the long run. I know myself I was caught between a rock and a hard place regarding my health and I chose WLS as a way to help me get to where I needed to be. You have the right to decide for you what is best. Don't let them take that away from you! Keep us posted!
  22. Hi Matt, Thank you for sharing your story! I'm so glad for all of the previous posts - Great reassurance and info! I struggle as well & will be having the sleeve in about a month. I was a healthy weight the first 2/3 of my life but had a lot of loss/trauma and used food as comfort and to eat my pain which led to a 125 lb weight gain. I've found myself getting nervous these past couple of weeks & am once again turning to food. In my opinion, two things are really key - 1) therapy and 2) to try to find other things to turn to. I just finished an intensive outpatient program for eating disorders (3 hours a day, 3 days a week for 2 months). We had 5 therapists and had group, skills, nutrition, medical, art and DBT therapy. The DBT therapy was probably the thing that affected me the most - because it is Dialectical Behavioral Therapy and focuses on how to change behaviors. We also focused a lot on self-care, self-love and getting to the bottom of our problems / why we use food. I know that therapy will always be another tool in my toolbox, and I have an appointment this Friday to deal with my pre-op anxiety. My suggestion is to look up anything in your area that can help with those 2 things. This is also such a great place for support & info. I wish you only the Best!!
  23. I just posted this in another thread but it mostly applies. PLAN. FOR. IT. Most of us are food addicts. We have no self control when it comes to food. We will under estimate what we ate and then be surprised when the weight gain happens. I strongly advocate keeping a food diary. It's not to obsess over calories and how low we can keep then and stay healthy. It's to keep ourselves accountable. I use myfitnesspal. I have it set to also include carbs, sodium, fat and sugar. There is a maximun level of carbs, fat and sugar that works for me, so I monitor that. I used to have a problem with my feet and legs swelling so I monitor my sodium levels. I fill out my diary in the morning and add or subtract in the evenings according to what I actually ate. They also have an app for on the go changes. I do not allow anything in my house that I cannot eat without bingeing. I don't care is it's Suzie's favorite thing. It's not allowed because I am an addict and have no self control. If you have family members who miss their favorite food, tell them to buy a single serving portion and eat it. Sabotaging foods are not allowed in the cabinets. If you were an alcoholic would they insist on keeping that 6 pack in the house? EXERCISE - I don't care if it's taking a 30 minute walk each day or Leslie walk away the pounds DVDs. Commit to something on a regular basis.

    Well Crap..

Well Crap.. yes..I hadn't realized that its been well over a year since my last visit here.. and it seems that I should have been visiting a whole lot more often.. because not only did I fall off the wagon - but I rolled into a raveen that lead to a cliff - and here I am hanging by a mere branch.. with all 340lbs of me.. I can blame no one except myself for the weight gain.. I've gained a total of 43.3 lbs.. I've been completely out of control - and of course recently (within the last 2-3 weeks I've been trying to get back to basics.. I've forgotton how to eat, how to control my poritons, I've forgotten good food choices, and definitely "forgot" the importance of daily exercise/activity - so here I am - trying my best to un-do all that I've done within the last year or so.. Take care my friends.. Just me - Bea

    Antidepressants and Weight

The only antidepressant that doesn't cause weight gain is Wellbutrin. Psychotropic drugs like Seraquil, Zyprexa, Depakote, and Lithium almost always cause weight gain. Ability, although a good drug, raises blood sugar. I've realized that less is more and just stuck to taking one antidepressant. I usually seasonal depression and take Seraquil during Nov-March. I've decided not to do it this year and try more natural approaches. Good luck!
