  1. There is a good reason to avoid the RNY revision if you can - the reactive hypoglycemia and marginal ulcer (and all of the medical care limitations that stem from it) issues, but it's not the end of the world, either if that's what you need. It's a common procedure that's been done in one form or another for 140 years, so its quirks and features are well known (but I would rather avoid its quirks if I can). I would certainly get a second, and even third, opinion on it, as while the sleeve is a fairly straightforward procedure most to do these days, repairing one that isn't working correctly is not necessarily so. Most bariatric surgeons started out with the bypass, so that is their comfort zone and they often prefer to go back to the familiar when things get a bit complicated, while there are some who have gone deeper into the sleeve and specialized in it and related procedures, such as the DS, and they are more comfortable doing things that others wouldn't do. We sometimes hear on these forums that "you can't do a Nissen (fundoplication) on a sleeve as there isn't any fundus left (well, not much) yet there are some who routinely perform them. Between that and meshing, there are options, and an RNY doesn't necessarily fix the potential recurring problem, as it, too, yield a small stomach pouch that is subject to herniating. If possible, for a second opinion, I would seek out a surgeon who does the DS (duodenal switch) as that is a good proxy for one who is well experienced with dealing with sleeves, and is more comfortable with more complex procedures as well. If they recommend an RNY revision, too, then that's a pretty solid confirmation of what's appropriate for your specific case.

Acid re-bound effect after stopping omperazole

When I had my revision from sleeve to bypass, I was on Omeprazole and was slowly weaned off. Just stopping completely can cause that rebound issue, so he had me taking the full dose every day for the first 4 weeks. Then every other day for 2 weeks, then 3x a week for 2 weeks, then I went off them completely. And I had absolutely no issues at all. I had to have the revision because I originally had the sleeve and had MAJOR complications (incredible gerd that required 80mg of Nexium per day, still had break through reflux so Pepcid was added as needed, and then pre-cancerous polyps developed all through my stomach and duodenum, requiring 5 surgeries for remove everything). My surgeon wanted me on the PPI and to do a gradual step down to wean off to protect my stomach and allow it to heal so there wouldn't be any additional issues. I would say maybe try stepping down gradually off the PPI and see if that helps.

    August 2023 Surgery Buddies!

Wow, you've been through a lot! I've never heard of a revision like that before, nor that they did further revisions once you had the rny! What you described is my major fear, to have the surgery then have it creep back on despite me following all the rules! Thank you for sharing, yes it is maddening..I have my 6 week next week, I plan on discussing it with them at that time!
  4. So I had a revision to bypass at a very low weight (120 pounds) due to GERD. I saw three separate doctors for second opinions as I was quite concerned about losing too much weight by having the bypass. I have struggled to keep weight on for years due to the GERD and the vomiting it has caused me to have to deal with... and it was destroying my esophagus and stomach lining. That said, the GERD is gone, so Yay.... but I am still quite concerned about keeping my weight up. I am 4 weeks post surgery and down to 107 pounds. I am getting in all of my protein and liquids as I have been asked to, and this week I am finally allowed to eat more soft food. That said, I want to eat stuff that is more dense calorically - and that would normally not be allowed.... such as pasta...because I think that will help me keep the weight up better. I had some chef boyardee ravioli yesterday an it was definitely soft enough,... and had 8 grams of protein in the 1/4 cup I was able to eat. So, although it had more carbs than is suggested - I liked that - as I am trying to regain what I have lost... Is there ANY reason why I should not be able to eat pasta or bread products (toasted) if I can handle them.... besides them being bad for weight loss? Or is there something that could hurt my new anatomy? I don't want to break rules and injure myself, but I do want to keep my weight up. The nutritionist at Kaiser has been fairly silent when getting back to me... and keeps treating me like all the other patients.... I don't need to lose weight... I need to keep it on. And, yes, I've had to lose weight in the past.... just not since 2016. I know how to eat to keep weight off... just not quite how to eat to put weight on at this point. Thanks all for any help/ideas.

    August 2023 Surgery Buddies!

It’s a very different situation. I had RNY back in 2004. I lost a lot of weight and maintained it for 18 months. Then it started creeping back on. When I was finally ready for a revision (somewhere around 2014-ish, different team), the team kept losing my endoscopy results. I finally lost interest. In the last few years, I’ve felt ready to try again. My insurance has changed, as have revision methods. My insurance approved a procedure called Endoscopy with Argon Plasma Coagulation. They make the opening to the stomach pouch smaller by zapping it and creating scar tissue, making it smaller. I had the first procedure in 2022. Unfortunately, the surgeon didn’t tell me that there were more to come. No one reached out to schedule the next procedure. I assumed that the revision consisted of that one procedure. That’s why I thought the revision wasn’t working for me. When I spoke with my surgeon, she was surprised that I had done as well as I had with just that one time, as well as the fact that no one had contacted me to schedule the next procedure. I’ve had the second procedure, and I have continued to lose weight. I know the stalls are maddening, and if it continues for more than a few weeks, talk to your surgeon.

Thank you for responding! My bowel movements are daily so that isn't the issue. I've read stalls are common, but I wasn't expecting one only 3 weeks post op! May I ask, you said you checked with your doctor when you had a stall? Then you had a revision? I had a RNY, what more could they revise at that point? I'm sticking with the program..don't really have a choice even if I didn't want too...major surgery done..no going back. 😋 I know its fairly common to experience these stalls, but, it doesn't make it easier its still frustrating!

    Diamond Band

When I got the band I had been planning on getting a diamond band as my "reward". I got within 7lbs of my goal. I never got to goal and just started gaining almost to my band pre-op weigh. I revised to a sleeve on Thrus 02/09/12. I think I'm going to go ahead and get that diamond band as a reward for going through with the surgery. I think I deserve it! I was really scared. Afterall, I know I'll get to my goal with the sleeve and it'll serve as a reminder to follow the sleeve rules and that my sleeve won't fail me like the band did.

Most, if not all, of us have experienced a stall in weight loss not long after having the surgery. Check your bowels; you may be constipated. Just stick with the program. Talk to your surgeon, if you don’t see progress. I did that and discovered that I had had only the first of several procedures in my revision surgery.

    Calories at maintenance shock

I'm almost 15 months out from my original surgery and 3 months out from my revision. These numbers are where I was at when I hit around 10 months out and I've pretty much stayed here because I'm used to it. I was told I could go up if I want, and I may go up to 1200 on non work out days and 1400 on workouts since I'm doing heavier and longer workouts now. But with the smaller stomachs that we have, and the frequency we're supposed to eat, and the kinds of things we're supposed to eat, it is actually a lot easier to stay at the lower calorie amounts. You definitely shouldn't be anywhere near 2000 per day.
  10. I'm going to try and keep this from being too long, but there's so much to say!!! First I'll start with my newest NSVs. I'm officially in a size 18 clothes (from my original size 30), size 10 shoes (from my original size 11), size 6 1/2 ring (from my original size 10), 18" chain on a necklace (from my original 24" chain), and 2x jacket (from my original 4-5x). I can now comfortably fit on a massage table without fear of it creaking or breaking. I can now ride a bike because I'm within the weight limit. I now am able to hit my favorite thrift stores and walk out with seriously cute clothes that look nice, sit well on me, and actually fit comfortably!! My asthma is almost completely gone (I only have it when I get super sick now instead of all the time). My blood work came back and my hormone levels are almost in the normal range (I have PCOS) and my cysts that completely COVERED both ovaries are totally gone (without having taken any meds or done any hormone therapies!!) I did a 6 mile hike this past weekend with my son. I am completely pain free and am able to go full on beast mode with my workouts again. I can go up 5 flights of stairs before I need to stop and rest. Now for my new chapter in life and old dreams becoming new again. So years ago, I wanted to become a nurse. I completed all of the academics with a 4.0, aced all the labs, but couldn't do any of the clinicals because I couldn't do all the walking, I was 400 pounds, and my health/joints/back were way too bad. So I gave up on it. Then about 2 years later, I thought "well, maybe I can be a medical assistant. Surely THAT'S not as hard" and once again, I couldn't do the externship because I couldn't do the physical stuff. So I went into other areas for work, ballooned up to 421 pounds, worked remotely, and made good money. I loved what i did, but there was always a part of me that regretted not being able to go into the medical field. That was my heart's desire. So fast forward to now. I'm between jobs and miserable. I had to stop working because of all my complications from my first surgery. Now that I've been cleared, I can't get hired anywhere. So I decided that now is a great time to go back to my dream of working in the medical field. So on Sept 5th, I start school to become a certified pediatric oncology medical assistant. Most of my previous credits transfer over, so I only have about 6 months of academics to do and then the externship. Then I sit for my certification exam and then I get to finally FINALLY do what I've always wanted to do. By my 46th birthday next June, I should be right where I want to be, doing what I want to do, and hopefully at my goal weight. I'm sitting here in tears as I type this, because I thought this was something I would never see happen. I resigned myself to being morbidly obese, extremely unhealthy, and needing a cane to get around. I may not be at my goal weight (the weight comes off a lot slower with a revision, and also as your bmi gets smaller and you get closer to your goal) but I believe eventually I'll get there. But the things this surgery is giving to me, the dreams I can live out, the health and wellness and years of my life I'm getting back..... it was all worth it. The complications, the uncertainty, the pain and healing and stalls.... all completely worth it. We all start this journey wanting the numbers on the scale to go down. But there's SO MUCH MORE this surgery gives you. I will never, ever regret my decision. Never.
  11. What surgery did you have? When I had my sleeve, I was so sensitive to temperature of liquids, amounts, had to sip very slowly. When I had my revision to bypass, I was able to drink an entire 20oz of water 3 hours after surgery and haven't had any issues at all. Some people on here had to take it slow when they got home, some were able to just jump in and drink however much they wanted. I was in both camps.
  12. Had it put in October 2009. Exact date of revision is TBA, but it will probably be August-September this year. Going the national health care route involves a lot... sleep study, internist visit, nutritional classes, social workers etc. Tedious, but worth it if it's free. Also could help with treating the fibromyalgia so I'm not all that fussed about having to do it.

  13. Yes. Was revised to sleeve 3/10. Best thing I ever did. The band and I didnt get along.

  14. I was banded in Texas by Robert O. Powell, M.D. after 5 years of HELL had the band remvoved and a revision down to a Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy do in August, 2010 by Manuel Castro, M.D. in Dallas. I'm now in the Seattle, Washington area and LOVING my Sleeve AKA NORMAL LIFE!!!

  15. Thanks for asking. It went really well. Surgery took 3 hours. I had lipo to my outer, inner, posterior thighs and knees and lower abdomen and a pubic lift. The pain only lasted about 3 days. I am 12 days post op today and I actually did 30 minutes on my elliptical machine today (even though the dr told me to wait another week). The brusing was horrible, but is getting better. The swelling hasn't been too bad so far. I can already see improvement. I just hope I don't have too much sagging when the swelling goes away. I don't think I'm going to be satisfied with the pubic lift though. I had some excess skin from my tummy tuck that I was hoping he would remove and he ran out of time. I'll wait 6 months to see what it looks like and I may consider a revision if I don't like it.

    How are you doing?

  16. Heyyyyyyyy Mispristy!!! That's what I'm talking bout!! Back to work already. I'm hoping that I can do the same they want me to take a week off no can do it (without pay???) nope nodda doin it!!!! Yes, 5 more days I am so ready!! my clothes are packed for my overnight stay and the suitcase is by the door!!! Hmph!! I am not playin!!

Which band did you choose? I told my doctor that I wanted the AP Band which is the one that is more circular with the rough ridges that when it's inflated it looks like a circle still....However depending on my antamony (as they put it) will determine which one I will get one of the AP band sizes I will get. Since this is a revision to my gastric bypass that I had in 2004 he told me more than likely they will be filing my band so that it will fit around the valve to my stomach pouch.....I wish today was Friday!! Hmph!! Anywhoooooooo, I am glad that you are doing well. How are you doing with your proteins & stuff??

  17. Well I had been at a plateau for a few months. So I totally revised my eating choices and hit the gym every other day for about 2 1/2hrs give or take a few mins I have a routine that I do 1hr cardio then weights, abs, arms and inner outer thighs, and back. At 1st I was just loosing inches, now Im loosing weight too.

  18. Revision Surgery on Tuesday !!! Wish me Luck !!!!

  19. day 1 after port revision surgery.. pretty rough day

  20. Ouch! I think the port revision is more painful than the lap band surgery!!

  21. Thanks for the reply and no problem on no advice and asking a question to my question...I am happy to help anyone...overall I would say this has been gradual - the pain in my back has occurred and I also wake in the night from reflux and choking on the acid that would creep up while sleeping (which is very dangerous and you should tell your doctor right away) I have been sleeping with my bed elevated now and using prilosec twice daily and has made a huge improvement. My symptoms of vomiting and having the chest pressure have been with me since I have been banded, sometimes worse than others - I have had difficulty with slowing down while eating and chewing enough and that has led to where I am today i think because honestly my band has always been tight enough since surgery 2 years ago. The doctor stated after my surgery he was able to place the smaller band and I think that is why my restriction has been fine without having fills-however the vomiting of when I eat too fast or do not chew enough has probably caused the slip/prolapse - the upper GI is what was conclusive that my band needs to be moved or replaced my surgeon is replacing - looking at upper GI that is the best option. However, what concerns me is the stomach pain you are having - I think you should go to the doctor ASAP because my surgeon told me if I should have pain between now and the scheduled revision surgery I should go to the ER and they can do the surgery right away if necessary. I don't want to scare you but don't let it go. Hope this helped you somewhat.

  22. I'm back on after almost 4yrs. My success rate has been horrible because I have had 3 revisions, surgeries and not good fill success. I found a really good doctor here in Colorado Springs (we are stationed here now). My last fill was less than a month ago and I have lost 25 total since the end of July bringing me to 250. So, I am on my way once again. Only thing is now I need to retrain myself how to eat. I am constantly getting stuck and throwing food back up and sometimes I am lucky if ...

  23. I am SO SO SO confused!!!! From day one the doctor told me I was having a revision!! He was going to do a combination of a bypass and DS because of my BMI. So since June I thought I had a DS... (surgery was actually done by another doctor in his office)....today I found out that I had a Malabsorbtion Bypass and no DS???? So all the study and research I did on the DS was in vain!!!!! He told me that the reason I was doing the DS was that the greater percentage of weight loss and the lower percentage of likely hood to gain it back!!!! Right now I am just numb!!! I have a call into his office to find out why??? and why I wasn't told???? This may make sense as to why I still can eat!!!!

  24. My insurance papers have been submitted for approval, and I'm on pins and needles. I'm hoping that I get approved very nervous. Anticipated surgery date for revision is December 18, 2014.
