  1. Hi All, I have the Sleeve about 16 months ago and had an overall good result, lost about 55% of my excess weight. I was pretty surprised though that I really never had much feeling of restriction after the surgery, never got sick, never felt overly stuffed, and my hunger only decreased moderately. I kinda felt like most of my weight loss was really attributable to the lifestyle changes I made associated with the surgery, although it definitely helped some. I recently was diagnosed with an inflammatory spine disease for which the only real treatment is aggressive weight loss and moderation of inflammation. I'm considering having a revision of the sleeve or conversion to a bypass and would really like to find someone great in the Los Angeles area. My previous surgeon was fine operatively but didn't really listen to me and I'd be hesitant to discuss my current situation in that setting as this feels like a really big decision given my recent diagnoses. I'm considering Dr. Feiz and Dr. Dorwaiswamy. Any other great people I should consider who are great surgeons but also willing to spend a minute listening to concerns?

    Dr Aceves

Actually, when i was there in October, he mentioned that he had his first leak. He said that is was a revision and it was a band to sleeve surgery with lots of scarring and such. Noting that could be done, but the leak was caught right away and the patient was brought right back in to surgery and re-stitched and the leak was repaired. I would go back to Dr A in a heart beat!

Glad to hear everything went well. I am also having the sleeve done (revision from band) on June 26th. Good luck!

    Northeast?? Need a VSG DR.

You can check out Dr. Gagner on Obesityhelp.com He was in Florida for a short time, and then went overseas to teach the sleeve and other bariatric and lap procedures to surgeons in Europe. I believe the last I saw on the Florida forum, he is now practicing in NY. He's one of the best, and has a phenomenal reputation. I have zero personal experience with him. But, his name came up during my research for my revision. Unfortunately, he was already in Europe when I was able to get my insurance stuff figured out for revisions. I liked his stats, his patient testimonials, and the sheer fact that he is a well rounded surgeon, not just for bariatrics. I did independent research as well on him as I did with many US and Mexico surgeons. And of course, there is the Weill Cornell Medical Hospital in NY, New York. Again, no personal experience, but their guidelines, stats, and reputation for bariatric procedures are well respected and documented. Best wishes in your research. I know one member here (bushidomaster) is having his surgery in NY, but I don't remember his surgeons name. You could find him through the member list at the top of the forum, and possibly shoot him a message.

    The Price of Mexico

Hi Star and welcome! Dr. Aceves total cost is $9500USD for first time sleevers (meaning not a revision). That price includes all pre-tests, one night in a resort, the surgery, the anethesia, and 3 nights in the hospital, all medication and all post-op tests. You also get a copy of your blood work, your chest x-ray, your GI xray and your operative report when you check out of the hospital. It also includes transportation from San Diego to Mexicali and Mexicali to San Diego. He is running a special for July of $8950.

    VSG at Scripps Clinic

Welcome to the family Zafiro - happy to have you here. Your apprhension is normal, we've all gone through it or are going through it. I am almost 4 months out and I can say now that I am not the least bit sorry that I had the surgery -- now, if you'd ask me about month 2, I'd have had a hard time saying that. My worst post-op issue has been esophogeal spasming and the surgeon believes that is caused by the fact that I had a hiatal hernia repaired and also believes it will dissipate by 6 months out -- I can tell you it has definitely gotten better from where I was at 1 month. There are a lot of people on this forum who have revised from the band to the sleeve -- PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE read their stories before settling on the band. ASK LOTS OF QUESTIONS - SOMEONE HERE WILL ANSWER YOU!
  9. This is another of those "it's anybody's guess" things. There is a different Blue Cross organization for each state, and they will all vary on their coverage details depending upon local market conditions and state laws. Then there is a difference between individual plans, ObamaCare plans and employer provided plans - all of which can vary depending upon what options the employer chooses to buy. Some plans don't cover WLS at all (even if they did in the past) while others limit the benefit to only one WLS per lifetime. Muddying the waters further, if the revision you seek is due to complications of a previously covered surgery, then it is not a WLS procedure but is treating that complication (it sounds like it to me, but it isn't my decision.) There should be policy bulletin for your BC policy online that spells out what applies to your policy - what they cover or exclude as relates to WLS. You can call their number, but don't take their answer as the last word, as the customer service reps have been known to be wrong. When you find a surgeon to handle your case, their insurance coordinator should be able to tell you exactly what your policy covers, as it is their job to know the lingo and understand all of that fine print. I understand that some surgeons are averse to working on other surgeon's patients (fixing others' mistakes...) but that is not an exclusive thing. One of the docs that I associate with (he runs out support group now) does a fair number of RNY to DS conversions, which as he doesn't ordinarily do RNYs, means that he is fixing other's mistakes (as well as fixing wonky sleeves that others have left behind) so they are out there - you just have to look. Thinking about that a bit more, if a surgeon doesn't want to revise other's patients, then he is either making a lot of mistakes himself that need revising, or he isn't very experienced in doing revisions, so you are better off searching for someone else. Good luck,,,,
  10. I'm on day 4 of a 7 day pre-op liquid diet - semi-skimmed milk and any tea, coffee etc - using milk from the allowed amount. I'm not losing much - and as mousecat said, I've had much better results on a very restricted low carb diet in the past. But, I'm just trying to keep it going. My op is on Wednesday! Sleeve - revision from Band!...

    Full liquid question

I never measured my liquids either. I'd eat 1 small can of Cambells tomato Soup (with 1% milk) a day, broken up into 4 meals. I drank a 1oz medicine cup of Protein shake every hour (or actually whenever I remembered was more like it) and all the Water, crystal lite, Jello, and sf popsicles I wanted. To this day, I can't eat tomato soup. Thank God I found Progresso Tomato Basil Soup, cuz I'm gunna be back on the liquids for 3-4 weeks after my sleeve revision surgery in June. Luv me some Tomato Basil Soup! I would probably break 1 can (2 cups) into 4 meals also (1/2 cup each meal). Nothing like tomato soup for breakfast! Good luck! You'll be happy when you can add mashed potatoes (at least I was. Could've bought stock in KFC!) Marci
  12. Hi I am very new to learning about the sleeve. I had the band done in about 2005, then had 2 revisions. Still no success. Debating on whether or not to go to the sleeve. My Drs of choice so far are Dr. Jay, Dr Kim or Dr Nick. Any preferences?
  13. Dr. Rawlins is great. I'd have him do my revision if I could afford him. I think I've found a good doc out of state who will help me though. Good luck to you!

    Nervous

HI Mary!! Welcome to VST. I am also a revision patient from band to sleeve. I love my sleeve!! Best things I ever did for myself. For me I did experience some pain and I also had nausea and even a little vomiting. Even with all that though I do NOT REGRET my decision what so ever. I'm so thankful I was given a second chance and here I am today sitting at goal and continuing to improve daily! I took 3 weeks off from work and have a desk job. It was more than enough time, but it was nice that I didn't have to be on liquids while getting back because it can be a little tough remembering to sip sip sip all the time. I'm not sure if 2 weeks would be enough time for you, as I'm not sure all that entails being a bus driver. It does seem a little physically demanding, having to move that large steering wheel for hours and hours. But again, I'm not privvy to that. Good luck to you!!!! You're going to be fine. Nervous is normal, it's totally ok. Like favored mentioned above, we do have a section here specifically for band to sleeve revisions. Here's the link: http://www.verticalsleevetalk.com/forum/13-band-to-gastric-sleeve-revisions/

  16. Anyone one else having a revision band to sleeve on that date or first WLS surgery? My doctor is dr. Manuel Castro in Dallas and Hospital is Forest Park Medical Cemter in Dallas. We can be surgery buddies. Then join in with the Febuary Sleevers.
  17. So 4-1/2 years ago, I had the sleeve. Within 3 months, I dropped 60 of the 100 pounds I wanted to lose. I was off all blood pressure meds (and still am). Within the year following my sleeve, I developed abdominal hernias that my bariatric surgeon repaired. At that point, my weight loss stopped and I never reached "goal". Also at the time, I was working a 12 hour, physically demanding (not with heavy lifting but with a lot of walking), night shift 7p-730a which was one of my first saboteurs to my weight loss success -- I wasn't getting enough sleep. I also didn't exercise at all because of my physically demanding job. I decided to leave my night shift job, which I loved very much, for a "day job" but there was a 1 hour commute each way to this job. Exercising was now an even bigger challenge, but I got a gym membership near my home and I would drive my hour commute to the gym, work out and by the time I got home it was 8 p.m. 3 nights a week. Then I was eating dinner late. Enter REFLUX. I started with 20 mg of omeprazole, which didn't quite do the trick with my symptoms. Moving on to 40 mg was better but as time went on even the 40 mg of omeprazole wasn't cutting it so I supplemented with OTC omeprazole 20 mg for a total of 60 mg a day. That's where I am now. A recent EGD revealed I have yet another hernia. Lessons Learned: 1) Lifestyle matters. Prepare a lifestyle to accommodate your surgery so that you can take care of you. I didn't do this. I tried to be superwoman. I am humbled. 2) Follow up with your doctor's office more frequently than your program requires. Accountability is everything. Don't wander off and think you don't need follow up because you most certainly do. 3) Bloodwork. I can't emphasize this enough. I always keep my bloodwork in check -- I didn't want to lose my hair -- and I didn't. 4) Get plenty of sleep. Sleep needs to be as necessary as water to your well being. With these lessons learned, I will be getting the Roux-en-Y revision surgery to end my GERD and hopefully put me back on track with the 70 pounds I want to lose. I have created a lifestyle now that allows me to take care of me. I have a gym membership that includes a pool. I work a day job that allows me to work at home one day a week. I finally realized that being good to me is not a selfish thing, but a necessary thing.

Are you getting the sleeve, bypass or a revision or would you like to talk about anything else? I'm understanding, my friend is getting a revision on the 24th and we've been focusing on other topics for now. These group can be the support you need...
  19. Hi there! I am scheduled for Revision from lap band to gastric bypass on Dec. 12th. I am sooo nervous! I'm self paying so I'm going to Mexico, alone, for the surgery. Can anyone give me some information on how you are doing after your revision, like the recovery period and how much you have lost. I'm really nervous because I was a complete failure with the lap band and I don't want another failed surgery.

    Surgery Date May 21St

Me too! I'm in the process of having the revision, the lapband just didn't work for me after I had my son and I'm back in my 200s I'm always hungry and crave all the bad stuff but before my baby I was well on my way to my goal weight, I'm hoping this will be a new start for me!! Good luck!!

    gastric bypass or gastric sleeve?!

I say RNY because its been out longer, more researches have been done on it and to be honest when revisions are done they always seem to revise that person to RNY. Might ad well start out the right way.

    What do i do?!?

I was very scared about dying myself! That was probably my only concern lol Mind you I had 2 operations, I had the lap band and then my revision to the gastric sleeve so I had double the "panic/scare". But at the end of the day, I looked around and saw that everybody else came out alive and did very well. And I also knew the risks were very low for someone like me. I prayed and I believed that I would be alright. Sometimes you have to let go and believe with all your heart that you will be alright, and not only that, you will be very successful with your tool. Because alot of people do forget to realize that this is just a "tool". So pray not only to have a sucessful surgury day, but also to lose weight and keep it off! Everything else (your fears) will only be major distractions and are geared to throw u off track, stay focused

Well I have PEIA, which is one of the worst insurances to have for this surgery. They agreed to pay to take out my band, but would not pay for the revision. So I was self pay. But Dr. Quinlin did talk to them to try and get them to approve it. Honestly that meant a lot to me because no other doctor has tried to help like he did. I am still feeling a bit sore, but overall I feel good. The recovery with my band was easy compared to this. But I would never recommend the band to anyone because of all the problems I had with it.

I am from Clarksburg and Dr. Quinlin did my surgery on Monday (Aug. 26). He removed my band and revised me to gastric. I really like him as a surgeon/doctor. He was really the first doctor to try to help me with all the trouble I was having with my band. My original surgeon left WVU a year after I had my surgery, which left me on my own to find a new one. I then went to see one in Charleston and he didn’t seem very interested to help. Like I said, I really think he is a good doctor. And it makes me feel better that he trained under the doctor that did my parent’s surgeries in the late 90’s.
