The BIG Book on the Gastric Sleeve!

Alex, did you get a revision surgery?
  2. Other than the really bad acid reflux which I am going to see the doctor about in my appointment in a few days, I feel pretty good. My resting heart rate is now 70. It used to be around 80-85. I used to have the band and had a revision to gastric sleeve. Whenever I used to take deep breaths, I could feel the band and it felt like a stricture. Not having it in my body feels great just because I was always aware that it was there and it was always bothering me. I huff and puff less when climbing the stairs.

Looking To Start The Gastric Bypass Buddy Threads

Congrats on your revision. Don't forget you're body is still healing and you probably still have some fluid left from the operation/IV they gave you. You'll be losing soon! How are you feeling?
  6. Does anyone know if it is standard surgical practice, just better, or irrelevant to empty the lapband prior to revision surgery?
  7. I've been at goal for a year now and am ready for a breast implant revision (had the same ones for 31 yrs now). I'm going for a consult in June with a local doc, but was wondering if anyone has had plastics done in Mexico. If so, by whom, what did you have done, what was the cost, and were you concerned at all about your safety? Any other information would be appreciated. Thanks for your help!
  8. Yes I had my removed and bypass done on December 31 no problems the weight is a little slow coming off but it coming 30lbs so far down to 259 but I was told the revision lose slower has any one else heard that

    federal employee program BCBS

I have BC/BS Federal Texas I was denied twice being told that I was having revision surgery I would have to have no weightloss for two eyars and my BMI I was told was too low they said I was 35 well I have a BMI of 37 now and my weight nop matter what I do keeps increasing. My Dr.s Coordinator sent on all the information and I was given the letters to read during one of my visits and well it dd nto state any of the actual reason and problems that I actually ahd or was having. I feel no one seemed to care about me or my case any longer. I am now amost 4 years pot surgery. I vomit so hard and often each day that I ahve to sit on my toilet holding a buncket becuase I now lose control of my urine and well my poop (sorry) I just sob becuase I know this is not right but what can I do about it. I ahve bad heartburn, GERD well it is back, my esophagus when i swallow my food just hurts to where you don't want to eat. My diabetes has come back, my HBP has never went away and now I have high cholesterol. I feel a huge loss here and mis understanding with my Dr. that did my surgery. The last time I was in his office I was discussing this with him and well he could not get out of here fast enough for it seemed. I just want my insurance company to see that all my problems are for real and that no one is supposed to live their life as I have had too.

    Fear of STRETCHING Sleeve!

I'm not sure why you refuse to believe this can happen but here are a few more for you that were not prior lap band patients and are not me. These are actually revision surgeries of those who had to be resleeved. ImageUploadedByBariatricPal1429317110.749143.jpgImageUploadedByBariatricPal1429317122.380683.jpgImageUploadedByBariatricPal1429317131.348455.jpg Never did I say I REFUSE to believe it's possible. It's my OPINION that if the procedure is done correctly, a sleeve will not stretch significantly. My opinion is based on my experiences and those of the sleevers I know, most of whom are 3-5 years out. This is also what I was advised by multiple surgeons. It's my OPINION that your opinion has been vastly influenced by your own experience (understandable). Your thread here - http://www.bariatricpal.com/topic/334573-sleeve-to-mgb-low-bmi/ - opened my eyes to your situation. I do hope you find the success you are seeking.
  11. I was banded in 2007; it worked lovely for me, I lost almost everything I wanted in 1 year -- then I got pregnant & it broke, gained it all back, had a baby, revised band -- lost it all again, got pregnant again & it broke again -- gained it all back again, had a baby, revised band. Worked again, but slower... broke again.. gained it back... this has continued on and on.. I have had a total of 2 replacements & 6 revisions. The last revision didn't take, I don't feel the same as I use to, and that revision was early 2015. This is between 2 surgeons. Back to my original 2007 pre-op weight, my band has been bothering me... Found out it is slipped & has to go. They had to move my port from belly, chest, belly... port has flipped 4 times... port disconnected once... tubing broke once... and now slipped. Keep in mind, since day 1 I am self-pay, so I could have bought a house by now with all I have paid. Doctor said we either revise the band again, remove it, or convert it. I refuse to revise the band again, I hate the booger at this point. It will be $9k to remove it -- $22k to revise it to a sleeve. I am too afraid of GP, even after all this time as a bariatric patient. In 2012 I wanted to convert to the sleeve, but the price difference was too much to justify everytime I had to go under the knife (if I only knew how many more surgeries I'd be paying for since then because of the band!!). This time, I decided -- remove it, and be done. When I can eat 'normal' again for the first time in years, I'll work on eating things like fruit, veggies & salads -- which I can't eat now. I thought a little more & talked with family, and we've all decided I should just take out a 2nd mortgage and bite the bullet, because I'm not healthy anymore and would very much like to be, and if I decided later on I want the sleeve, it's going to be another 20k+ the 9k I pay now. So, I have it all scheduled now. Surgery first week of January 2017 (for tax purposes, I asked to wait until the new year). I've been absent from the forum for years, feeling that I have nothing to contribute as a lap-band failure, and the great friendships I made through this forum, I talk to all the time. But I am back, now that I am going to be a 'newbie' in the sleeve world. I am very excited now that I've gotten over the initial shock of how much money I'm going to be shelling out..... again. Here's to my new success, and good riddance to the band!!!!

    Connecticut Sleevers?

Hi -- How much do you have to loose and how old are you? I was sleeved at 56. For me, the surgery was a breeze. I have no issues with Vitamin levels, etc. Never once vomited or had any kind of dumping issue -- even if I had a bit of a sugary treat. Maybe that would be true if I had bypass, but from what I've heard, it's somewhat more intense - both the surgery and the lifestyle. For either one, exercise is the "secret sauce". My original, self imposed goal was 112 lbs, based on insurance charts. Then I revised to 132. Now at about 140, I am wearing a 6 petite in most things. If I had the money to do a front lift and get rid of the excess skin, I would probably be a 4. I am more focused on percentage of body fat. When I started, I was at about 43% body fat -- now I am at 24%. So, my point is, it is possible to be very successful with the sleeve. I believe (but I am not a doctor) that there are other reasons to go with the bypass besides amount to loose. I have heard that it is a better (but not the only choice) for those with diabetes. Ellen
  13. I understand what you are saying, but I don't think it is completely accurate. You CAN fail with the sleeve. My doctor (not surgeon) has several band to sleeve revision patients and so I asked her about this before my surgeryy. She said that 3 of them have done AWESOME but the fourth one has not lost well at all. She thinks it is because she Snacks too often but for whatever reason the sleeve tool isn't working for her. I was warned by the surgeon that revision patients might lose less, might lose slower. There is apparently data to support that, but I haven't seen it. The theory I heard is because you have gotten used to that "full feeling" and so are desensitized to it. To the OP - My losses have been good, progressing like a virgin sleever not a revision. I personally find living with the sleeve so much better then the band, I feel like I don't have as many adjustment problems as some new sleevers have. i suspect nearly 100% of revision patients ask the question of "why is it different this time". I don't know about you, but i was told I failed with the band as I wasn't compliant. You will hear that you must follow the rules to be successful with the sleeve too - absolutely true. My own personal experience is that the sleeve is a much much better tool so you have a better chance of remaining compliant. It is easier to be compliant when you aren't hungry and when you aren't vomiting healthy food, There is no comparison, you don't have a pouch, you just have a tiny tummy. Someone who used to post here alot always said "the sleeve is what the band promised, but never delivered"
  14. I had the crapband for 10 years. I had your same fears, but the sleeve has been terrific for me and I feel gettng the revision has been the best decision I have made in quite awhile. I have lost weight. Not saying it is easy, but the tool works like it should so you stand a chance at success. I don't vomit, slime, PB or whatever Bandsters are calling it these days I can eat normal foods - including veggies - and have been since about 2-3 months out, just small quantities. I am not hungry all the time. I spend a year working up the nerve to do the revision, wish i had done it sooner, but that year of thinking about it benefited me in other ways. I was informed, had researched it thoroughly and was READY.
  15. Had revision on 1/10/14. Having a difficult time getting in all the fluids...any suggestions out there?
  16. Just like you, I was banded, then had the sleeve revision. My surgery was on Dec.19.
  17. I had my band in 2003 and I am having my revision to sleeve 12/31/ 2013 at 7:30 am , so another day and ahalf and I will be sleeved! Can't wait I'm so excited!
  18. How true is it that those who underwent revision from Lap band to RNY loose weight slower than "virgin" RYN patients?
  19. My heaviest weight was 370. In 2010 I had the band installed (such a mistake, waste of time, money and effort IMO) March 10th, 2018 at my Pre-Surgical check in I was 310. March 21st, 2018 at check in for surgery I was 294.4. I had the band removed and revised to the bypass. Today, January 23rd, 2019. 308 days after surgery... I hit a number that I haven't seen in more than 20 years Onederland. I'm down 95 lbs since surgery, 110.6 lbs from pre-surgical. And a staggering 170.6 lbs from my heaviest weight. I need to thank so many people that if I tried, I'd forget someone and then we'd start with the hard feelings. So I'll go with this. Thank you. If you've helped me through this in any way, shape, or form, Thank you.

    Approved for conversion to bypass!

My doctor told me today that I am going to need a revision to rny from sleeve due to severe reflux. I have been on Nexium and Zantac for 2 years and he says it is not for long term use. I was already revised from band to sleeve 2 years ago, also due to reflux. I am scared to death. He gave me a month to think about it. Please let me know if this revision works for reflux. Also, I became lactose intolerant when I had my sleeve surgery, so I also wonder if maybe rny would reverse that also? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  22. TRUE STORY: weight 5 years ago: 294 banded 5 years ago weigh in 4 years ago: 178 more than 100 pound lost in 1 year! first slipped band 3 years ago 2nd slipped band 2 years ago new 14 cc band 2 years ago 8 ccs in band for 2 years new weight: 294 Well if I don't feel like a complete failure. Failure of wasting $$$$$, time and effort to lose the 1st year and money on revisions and new band. This band is not helping me at all. I am going to the surgeon this Friday for a fill I hope and if it doesn't help restrict the way the 1st band did, I want to rip this thing out. HELPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP!!!!!

    Stretched/dilated pouch

I had a dilated pouch and had it repaired last Friday. My symptoms were horrible reflux, heartburn even with heartburn meds, and I couldn't keep any solids down. That went on for months. I got three unfills during that time; they took out everything, and the problems were not solved. I asked my surgeon if I would be prone to get dilated again and he said it was rather rare. I hope he is right because my insurance would not pay for my revision since I was self-pay for my first band. Other than soreness from the surgery, I am feeling much better. No acid taste or reflux. My surgeon said that it was having the band too tight and throwing up too much that caused the dilation. He fixed my hiatal (sp?) hernia, and put in a new band above the dilated part on my stomach.
  24. I'm currently in the process of jumping through all the hoops to get revised from band to bypass. I was dead set on getting the sleeve until I saw that many people needed to be revised from the sleeve to bypass because of GERD issues. My GERD issues were so awful with the band, I would wake up with acid choking me and coming out of my nose. So I'm not taking any chances this time.

    Lapband Removal

Nicole, I'm so sorry you had to go through that. Please don't beat yourself up over regaining weight. I had to say goodbye to my band 3 weeks ago and I've regained also. My band was removed because of a congenital problem with my esophagus that contraindicates the gastric band, so eventually (when my esophagus is sorted out) I hope to revise to the sleeve. People often say that the band is the least invasive of bariatric surgeries, but let's face it. Any surgery that requires the patient to be anesthetized while a surgeon cuts holes in their abdomen, pokes instruments into those holes, and implants a medical device, is pretty invasive. People also say that the band is good because it's removable. Well, that's true, but it doesn't mean that removing it is easy and safe. RNY is reversible, if need be, but that doesn't mean it's easy or safe. So I guess you have to choose the lesser of the evils. I think we'd all like to say we can lose and maintain our weight on our own, but if we had a big enough problem that we qualified for weight loss surgery, it's not likely that another attempt to do it "on your own" is going to work longterm. On the other hand, presumably you've acquired some healthier habits since being banded, and can rely on those now, at least until you're healed and ready to consider a different surgery. Good luck!
