Hey I had gastric bypass for reflux (5/13/22) as I was just on the side pushing it for weight loss too. Is anyone else here for this reason? Also, because I didn't go through the normal bariatric process beforehand, I don't know what the follow-up should look like either. I saw my surgeon 2 weeks post op and now not til 3 months with nothing in between. No nutritionist, no therapist, no nothing. Is this common?

Yes. In my 3rd to 4th week, my weight loss stalled. I was consuming the same things I was when my weight loss was steady. Last week I realized that I had not had a bowel movement in a while. I tried taking Colace and Senna, and it felt like there was stool on the way. When I tried to expel it, it got stuck. I tried to get it out manually, but it didn’t work. After an afternoon and evening in the ER, I was sent home with prescriptions for Miralax and Lactulose. For several days I used a gloved finger to get the big, hard chunks out when I pushed and it got stuck. When I weighed myself on Monday, I had lost 6 pounds. Six pounds of poop. Since then, my weight loss is back on track. I hope that helps. Some here say that a 3rd week stall is normal. Maybe for some. I only know my stall ended when I got rid of all that stuff in me.

I stalled for two weeks! Zero weight loss during my second AND third weeks post-op. It's normal and common. Weight loss for me resumed when I started pureed foods on week 4.

Feels pretty good, had a minor set back on soft veggies cuz I forgot the "seed" rule and thought I wad gonna die...so I've back tracked for a few days and feeling better. Weight loss has been slow (SW 250, CW 238, GW 150). Hoping it speeds up some, but I guess steady weight off is permanent weight off. Just thought it would be faster. First post-op visit is next Wednesday so I see what happens then. Sent from my SM-G981V using BariatricPal mobile app

Blah...my first stall...
Crisscat replied to SleeveToBypass2023's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The weight showing on my time line was mostly pre op. Once I had the surgery I lost 14 additional lbs by day 9 post op. Then everything came to an abrupt stop. I battle a constant lose 1 lbs then gain it back. This has been going on the whole time (5 weeks now). I have been in the office 4 times over this and an incision that wouldnt heal come to find out it was a stitch that was sticking out. So that is finally about closed and the incision looks alot better but no more weight loss. They keep telling me not to worry but after 5 weeks I am definitely worried. I go back in the office to see the Dr and dietician on 6/20. I am actually dreading it. I cannot help but feel like a failure and boy ole boy do the mind games kick in. Today I feel defeated but I know I need to reset my way of thinking with this. I battle with fluid intake and protein and I have mobility issues because of my right knee. Someone above mentioned not to let your body conform to a certain calorie intake and I think that may be what happened with me. I only get about 500-700 calories a day. Unlike you, I have no real hunger and I do have restriction and can feel it. Im not hungry all the time either, I have caught myself wanting to snoop about for something to eat and I ask myself what are you doing your not even hungry. lol So the "tool" is there and working but my body is not wanting to let loose of the weight. Im going to look into starting with some chair exercises first to move myself more and hopefully if that helps and if weight loss starts again then maybe I can get enough off to be more mobile with walking. At best I have about 20-30 min window before the knee gives out (was told I need a knee replacement). Im a constant work in progress lol -
I started the process mid January and go for surgery June 20th so that’s about 5 months. Initially my insurance required 5% weight loss, then it changed to 1 pound weight loss and 6 months of nutrition visits, then it changed to 1 pound weight loss and 3 months.

Feeling very defeated...not sure it was worth it now...

Bodies are weird. And exercise doesn't really cause you to lose weight. It's good for maintaining weight long term and it's essential for health, but 90% of weight loss is food choices. I would continue to track your eating and see how that goes but if you feel stuck, reach out to your medical team. It's such a struggle! -
I was just looking for this topic. I had revision surgery on May 9, and I was losing at a nice pace, and then suddenly I can’t get past 20 pounds. I realized last week that I hadn’t had a bowel movement in a little bit, so I started taking Colace. It started feeling like it was coming, so I tried straining. It started coming out and got stuck. I was in immense pain! I was sweating and breathing heavy. I didn’t know what else to do, so I called 911. At the hospital they offered me a couple of options. I asked if they could give me an enema at the hospital, wait a bit, and then do some “drilling.” Oh Boy! The doctor sent me home with prescriptions for Miralax and Lactulose. I had disposable gloves, which I used to go it and dig out the big pieces when they were stuck halfway out. You can get Miralax OTC. I don’t know if Lactulose comes OTC. It’s the Lactulose that really does it, but don’t go anywhere for a while. Buy overnight-size pads, because you’re going to leak. That’s the Miralax. Call your doctor/surgeon and tell them you’re constipated and stuck in your weight loss. I lost 6 pounds of poop, and I’m back on track. It took 3-4 days to get that much out.

Yeah I struggled early on too I found at the 2 month mark things started to get easier and Improved each month from there. I reverted back to the previous stages too, I was on soft foods for ages. I didn't have a goal weight from my surgeon but I had a a tentative goal of 70kg which I reset when I was 73kg to 60 kg as I still had a bit a fat to loose. I don't know if I will get to 60kg as my weight loss has slowed right down but it has slowed due to some of my food and mainly drink choices (coke) . I was really surprised how easy the "binge" was and how much I was able to eat but you are right now I know I can take steps for it not to happen again

Weight loss after one year?
Arabesque replied to Rey Rodriguez's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Some do some don’t. It can depend on how much weight you had to lose, your rate of loss, etc. I lost for almost another 11 months after I reached goal at 6 months. It was extremely slow the last few months but it was the weight my body wanted to be at (my new set point). Generally it is more difficult to lose weight in your second year. Your hunger starts to return, you’re eating larger portions, etc. If you’re doing strength training & putting on muscle that will be distracting from any weight loss you may be still having. Remember muscle weighs more than fat. Also everyone’s rate of loss slows the closer to their goal weight. Not every one reaches their goal. Gastric sleeve patients tend to lose 50-70% of the weight they have to lose (difference between starting weight & ideal weight). This is where the average lie at about 3 yrs post surgery. You will reach a weight that genetics, your new set point & metabolism are happy at & also a weight that you can sustain while living your life how you want. -
Do you still lose weight after being 1 year post op? I've been incorporating strength training in my routine these last 2 months but haven't noticed any weight loss and I'm nearing 1 year. I'm a few pounds away from my goal so I'm really hoping I can reach it soon.

Well it sounds like you are all doing well on your liver shrink diet which would be my first piece of advice. I had very little pain post op and after my dr commented twice on how well I did on the liver shrink diet I asked the NP if the two were related and she said that getting the liver out of the way definitely makes the surgery easier which means less bruising and stuff so yes that did help. The second piece of advice is to not compare yourself to others during your recovery or weight loss phase. We are all here to cheer each other on but every one of our paths will be unique. Don’t get discouraged if you are a slower loser or have more stalls than others. Trust the process and the weight will come off if you just follow the plan.

How do you tell whether the pudginess you have left is loose skin or if it's still mostly/all belly fat? I am wearing a size 10/medium depending on the brand. I have a 32.5 in waist, and I'm at a BMI of 29. My weight loss has slowed down tremendously this month (today is exactly 9 months out). I thought it was all belly fat, but it's starting to feel a lot "squishier" and "looser" in the skin in my abdomen. I really don't plan to have plastics (although the FUPA is redonkulous!) but I am trying to gage how much more of my belly fat I can expect to lose.

Congrats on your pre surgery weight loss!......its the 21st for me too! I agree the biggest struggle has been my morning coffee. I started my preop diet on the 8th because we were out of town for 2 weeks prior for a funeral and everyone wanted to take us out to dinner every night for a week so I didnt get to loose much before my pre op started. Plus I kinda wanted to divorce my bad food habbit but have that one last fling hahah. Eitherway I've been loosing an average of 1.2 lbs a day since I started.

Eating carbs (pasta, rice, or bread )
MistySkye replied to New_me_2022's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I have hit “healthy” BMI, and my loss slowed significantly. Since the end of March I have been hanging around 168. Today I was 166.6. So I’m thinking I was just in a stall. My inches still changed during this period. I’m fine if this is where I land, but In the back of my head, I would like to hit 160. -

Stalls are very common. The closer to a "normal" weight you get, the more slowly your weight loss will go and the more likely you are to have stalls. You can talk to your nutritionist to make sure you're eating the right number of calories and the right types of food for your body and activity level. You may need to eat more or less or exercise more. -
Decide to do WLS only to get possible breast cancer diagnosis?
lizonaplane replied to GetMyLifeBack2022's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I'm sorry you're facing this. The biopsy might show something very small that could be removed with surgery with no medical (chemo) or radiation needed. Or it might be more serious. In either event, you would have to talk with the oncologist to determine when you might be healthy enough to have WLS. There are a lot of really good treatments for breast cancer and there are lifestyle changes you can make now to help you get in the best possible shape for both any treatment you need as well as weight loss surgery. I wish you the best! -

I lost my Bum to a gastric doctor 😁

I needed to smile, thank you. I'm only 8 weeks post op/36 pound loss and I am not a fan of what my butt is looking like at all. Used to be nice and round then gained an extra 50 and it looked awful and now it's looking deflated and awful! Good news is a mommy makeover is an option for me so I try to hold on to that. Decide to do WLS only to get possible breast cancer diagnosis?
GetMyLifeBack2022 posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Hello, First time poster. I live with health anxiety and I worry all the time that I am going to get some kind of significant weight-related health condition. I decided to look in to weight loss surgery three weeks ago, found a doctor, got set up woth appointments next week. Then last week I had a mammogram that showed something suspicious, so then another mammogram and ultrasound and finally a biopsy on Friday. Perhaps it is nothing but googling the specific words in the ultrasound and mammogram report don’t sound great. I should get the results in the next two days. How ironic would it be to have something significant like this pop up immediately after I finally make the decision to change my health?! I’m so sad and mad. If this does turn out to be breast cancer then does that rule out weight loss surgery completely? Anyone have any knowledge or experience on that? I am trying to remain positive but emotionally I feel like I’ve ruined my life and officially missed the opportunity to get my weight under control and a healthy life back. Any words of advice or shared experiences are much appreciated. Thanks in advance. -
MONTHLY WEIGH IN 6 WEEKS POST OP

Nice spreadsheet. Blimey that's a rapid loss! Well done you. Enjoy! My loss has been a steady 2lbs a week for many months. It speeds up and slows down. Have never approached anything like yours -
November Surgery Buddies!!!
Spinoza replied to Tristenhilpert97's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Honestly - having studied it scientifically as best I can, I think that stalls just happen randomly and then just end - also randomly. They're part of all significant weight loss journeys. Upping or downing: calories; protein; water; exercise (including type or intensity of exercise) might coincide with a renewed loss but it's not likely to be the cause. Keep doing what you're doing and you will keep losing weight until you're done. Yes, more slowly and then MUCH more slowly, as you approach goal. I've had the same calorie intake for the last 4 months, and more or less the same level of exercise. I'm losing approx 2lbs per week but not at all in a linear fashion. Average it all out, keep on keeping on, and you'll be fine. You'll lose until you stop losing. You have done amazingly well @DaisyAndSunshine -
I am the same way. I will welcome any loss after years of walking/running 4-5 miles a day and never losing an ounce. I am already so thrilled at how different I feel just from the hernia repair. 2/3 of my stomach was in my chest for probably 15 years and I didn’t know. Today I’m 4 days post op and I am amazed at this feeling of calm that I haven’t experienced in forever. I wonder if it’s because things are back in place where they should be.
