How long post-op did you need shakes?
lsereno replied to gamergirl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I quit my daily shake around 5 or 5 months, but still used them when I traveled because its harder for me to get Protein in on the road. My program preferred us to have them at night after trying to get enough protein in, but at first I had one in the morning and one at night, then tapered to one at night and then finally one at night just on days when I didn't manage to get enough protein. I believe I read we need 1/2 gram for every lb we weigh. One of the ways I got enough protein is Fage 0 greek yogurt. 23 grams per cup. Cottage cheese is also loaded with protein. Lynda -
How long post-op did you need shakes?
gamergirl replied to gamergirl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I wanted to thank all of you who posted. I got some great ideas, and it also forced me to look at the protein content of what I was eating. One thing that amazes me about this surgery is how quickly things change post-op. Day 2 you can barely drink, day 5 you're getting in all your proteins and liquids! Last week I couldn't get in all my protein through food, now I'm down to only one shake a day. I realized that eggs were really filling me up but each only had 6 gms of protein. In contrast, I can eat 4 oz of cottage cheese or a small container of Greek yogurt for between 10-14 gms of protein, and so I added one each of those a day. I now drink my coffee shake in the morning, but the rest of the protein is coming from real food. So thank you all for taking the time to help me! -
Puréed stage questions
Valentina replied to Charlie Brown's Momma's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
pureed foods can be anything you cook in a crockpot and then into a blender. Make is really yummy and savory. It may not look great, but the taste? YUMMY!!. And of course--greek yogurt--my favorite. Or a hearty home made bone Soup,or chili-- blended, add some nutritional yeast for more Protein and flavor and yum yum. See? now you've made me wanting to go downstairs and make soup! Pureed stage ? Step outside of the box , be creative and have fun. Prayers going up . -
The tightness of my band fluctuates on a daily basis, sometimes even hourly. It's weird. I can eat something for lunch with no problem, but sometimes I can't eat it again for dinner that same day. Other days it's no problem. I never know from day to day. I exercise quite a bit so I'm not sure if that's it or if it's a water retention thing or what! It's frustrating at times. I'm sorry I don't have any advice, I just kind of go with the flow. I can tell almost immediately if I'm going to have trouble and I stop. Since being banded I've not been able to eat chicken, then all of the sudden I could eat is some of the time. Go figure! There are days when eating almost seems like a chore instead of a pleasure. On those days, I eat to live and eat what I can like soup, yogurt, protein shakes, etc. I'm all ears if anyone else has any answers or suggestions.

I just stocked up on a few the other day and walmart only had the single serve ones. Even those are too big for me I just cut them in about 1/2. I take 1 serving of the yogurt, 1 tablespoon of honey, and a 1/4 cup of granola. I think I get about 24 grams of Protein and around 200 calories. That holds me over to lunch.

Stomach feeling- top full bottom empty?
TQUAD64 replied to als74's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes, for the first time I have noticed that. I had my fourth fill last week and I am noticing a lot of variances with it of which is the top full bottom empty syndrome. This fill is causing me to lose weight like crazy, but I am eating every 3-hours, which includes very small portions. I will have a couple of ounces of yogurt and become full but yet hungry. Previous fills, made me feel full all over for at least 5-hours. I am monitoring the situation. I keep fluids and solids down, but it is just a weird feeling. I might have .5cc out on my Marc 4th visit with the doctor; just not sure yet. -
4 Months Out And Just Not Sure What To Eat Anymore
lsereno replied to shrinkinmama's topic in Food and Nutrition
Portion your chips or crackers and only eat them after Protein. If you eat your protein first, there will be less room. If you start with the slider, such as chips and crackers, you will fit a lot more in before you get full. Your breakfast should have more protein. One egg is 7 grams. Mix in some lowfat protein and have a glass of fatfree milk or soy milk during the morning. For easy to eat meals, here are some of my favs: For veggies, which I have with lunch and dinner: Can of V8 if I'm too busy to eat veggies Handful of raw veggies such as snap peas, baby carrots, cherry tomatoes. I also buy romaine and clean it by cutting it at the base, rinsing and drying. I put the leaves in a baggie and then use them as needed for salads, sandwiches, and lettuce wraps. I also like zuchinni, brussel sprouts, brocolli heads, frozen green Beans, and frozen mixed vegtables. It's easy to just cook at little of them and to buy a small amount. For fruit, which I have with breakfast and as a snack: I cut up a small watermelon or cantelope Wash grapes I buy a little of pretty much whatever is in season - I love fruit. but I couldn't eat anything except melons till I was about 6 months out. At first, fruit was too acidic. For protein: Fat free plain greek yogurt made into a shake with a couple of strawbberries, some splenda, a splash of OJ and some Water. Pair with whole wheat toast or oatmeal (couldn't eat oatmeal till about 6 months out) Lowfat string cheese with lowfat lunchmeat wrapped around it. Special K Crackers. Sandwich: 1 slice whole wheat bread with lowfat mayo and honey mustard, Rotissiere chicken: I use it salads, in stir fries, and mixed into canned Soup to up the protein. Sometimes I buy the premade salad bowls and then add chicken. Ground beef: I portion up a pound putting each portion in a baggie. Then I squish the baggie flat and freeze. It thaws in 30 minutes. Pork chops: I portion them into one chop per baggie and freeze. I fry stuff in a little fry pan, tossing in some veggies at the end, or I grill it on a little countertop grill and grill veggies with the meat. I love good food and I was used to cooking small amounts for myself because my husband's tastes have always been different than mine. Lynda -
4 Months Out And Just Not Sure What To Eat Anymore
CowgirlJane replied to shrinkinmama's topic in Food and Nutrition
At 4 months post op, I had zero appetite, zero interest in food. I ate greek yogurt, cottage cheese with pineapple, Protein drinks or bars. I also had chicken on a small salad, or a tuna salad or something like that. I could eat chicken breast or beef or whatever, but i just had a very low food drive at that time. My focus was just to be sure I got enough water/fluids and protein and just didn't worry about the rest. Like you, crackers were easy and I sometimes had them, but generally just kept them out of the house since they really don't add a lot of nutrition. Now 8 months out, I eat pretty normal healthy type food, in small quantities, still protein first, and no longer feel like food is too much of a bother type thing. -
Yeah I feel tight in the morning when I drink my pills and eat my yogurt. But by lunch I'm good. And if I don't chew good then my band screams at me to slow down. This is awesome for me. I am excited to get on the scale every morning. I'm never hungry anymore Like I was In the beginning. I love my band.

How Do You Count...
A New New Dawn replied to barepooh71's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Also, don't be afraid to ask what is in the food and how it is prepared. We have some items in our work cafeteria that I was unsure about (ie. their cottage cheese, was it lowfat, etc). They brought out the container for me to see. On their Breakfast yogurt parfaits they emailed their main office (our caf is run by Sodexho) and emailed me back the nutritional values. Lastly, when going out make the obvious choices of grilled over fried, order foods w/ the sauce on the side, minus mayo, things like that so you know there are no heavy added calories. -
I am 9 months out and still need the help of miralax or colace weekly Constipation is definitely an issue for a lot of WLS patients. food ideas.....cold cuts, cheese sticks, eggs, Greek yogurt, sugar free pudding, avocado, ricotta cheese, hummus, edamame, spinach (make egg/spinach/cheese cups), portobello mushroom (portobello mushroom pizza or cordon bleu) (use the mushroom in place of the crust for the pizza and chicken for the cordon bleu) Perdue Shortcuts are AWESOME! They are already cooked chicken pieces and are great for a snack/lunch. I put them in a Fiber One Wrap or a low carb wrap 1/2 cup chicken, 1 ounce cheese and salsa and makes a great quesadilla. Now you are only 1 month out so you won't be able to eat all that, you could get two or three meals out of that, but so yummy!

Yes, best wishes to teachers and others who work and don't want to have to run. I have been stuck on anything that you can think of. If I try eat too much of a good thing, including Greek yogurt, it will come up! Sometimes, even when you are not aware that you ate too much, something will cause it to come up. I suggest for teachers to keep a small bottle of coke at your desk.. It works like a roto-rooter type thing and will wash it down. Don't drink all of a soda, just an ounce will do. I keep one handy, I don't refrigerate, and its not for when I am thirsty! It can even be totally flat, which is best since we aren't supposed to drink carbonation! Best wishes. Karen

I'm doing Danon's Light & Fit Pineapple Greek Yogurt with a few tablespoons of Nature Valley's Protein Granola. I never used to eat breakfast, now I really enjoy it!

Hi, I had my surgery on March 20th and feel great...I was surprised that I'm doing so good. I did have some pretty nasty gas pains in the middle of my chest but the pain meds really helped and now they're finally gone. I'm glad I'm past the 1st week - I don't want to look at Jello, broth or crystalite for a while. I'm now on blended soups, cottage cheese, oatmeal, puddings, baby Cereal & vegies and yogurt, can't wait for next week - mushies stage. I went for my follow-up on Monday and after a week I lost 5lbs. I go for my 1st fill the end of April, looking forward to that. I would say my only problem I'm facing now is getting enough Water in and I still have loose stools and that's driving me crazy!!!!! Reesh .....WE CAN DO IT!!!:welldoneclap:

I often have a something like heartburn. No, not reflux, just mild heartburn. I've found a teaspoon of yogurt and it goes away. My nutritionist says that's not unusual.

Why does everything have to be so sweet
Kitt3000 replied to Beanthere's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Greek yogurt really takes the edge off the sweet. Also using powder with almond milk instead of the pre made liquids help. No sugar added blueberries, strawberries will also cut the sweetness down. Good luck! It will be over soon- we can do anything if we know there is a time limit on it! -
Nov 14 Sleevers?
Fallenangel2904 replied to Soli3l's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I tried something tonight for a little extra Protein because the shakes are just revolting to me. I haven't even been drinking them that long ugh Anyway I read this on here and it was a great idea! 1/4 cup of Greek yogurt 1/4 cup of FF milk Squirt of MIO. I used orange tangerine. And OMG it was good, tolerable and tasted like an orange creamcicle! It was 7 grams of protein I believe. Not bad! -
Not sure if that question is to me, but I'll answer just in case. Basically, I can only eat a few ounces at a time. My meals I eat mainly protein which is basically carb free and then I snack on cheeses and I consider cottage cheese mixed with Greek yogurt as dessert. Like I said though, I can't eat much at all so sometimes it's just a few bites and I have to come back to it for a snack. I don't have hunger or cravings or I'd eat other things I'm sure. So far I've lost my appetite for sweets.. Including ice cream, which I would eat by the tub full.

3 weeks post op gastric sleeve....always feeling really full when I eat
rosepose replied to msredd's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So that's actually not a great sign from what I was told by my Dr. and nutritionist - it can stretch out the sleeve and just generally suck. That pain is part of the feedback your body is giving you - if it hurts it's not good and it's too much. I was told to do the following: get really small bowls/plates and forks/spoons - small bites and slow eating are critical to not putting pressure on things Measure your food before you eat. - get half cup scoops and if that's too much get a 1/3 cup or 1/4th cup scoop and start with that Find a way to eat more slowly. This is hard for everyone of any size - we aren't socialized to eat slowly. For myself I have to eat while doing something else with my hands right now. I type and pick up the bowl and fork (I eat anything that isn't pure liquid with a fork - including yogurt - because it's less shovel like than a spoon) take a bite or two and put the bowl down and go back to typing. As soon as I have the first indication that I'm approaching full I put the bowl and fork into the refrigerator and walk away before it hurts. If I leave it near by I will keep eating absentmindedly and it will hurt. -
Broccoli slims you down! And so do other fiber-rich foods like berries, apples, green beans and stone-ground whole wheat. They make you feel full, so you take in fewer calories. And fiber may even prevent some of the fat you eat from being absorbed by your body. Lean protein ignites your metabolism! Every time you eat 4 oz. of salmon, chicken, turkey--even lean red meat--you ignite your metabolism, causing your body to melt fat faster. Low-fat dairy whittles your middle! Swapping two glasses of whole milk for low or non-fat milk will save you 135 calories a day. You can cut 13 pounds a year just by doing that! Lose even more by switching to low-fat yogurt and cheese for full-fat versions. Tea gives you a boost! Drinking green tea can raise your metabolism by up to 4%, making your body burn extra calories.

First Trip To Trader Joe's
mparkersmith replied to Beach Lover's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Some of my favorite groceries from Trader Joe's: --Steamed lentils (already cooked, just heat and eat, in refrigerated section) - I use these all the time, they have high Protein, great in salads or as a side. --Teeny tiny potatoes - perfect size for us sleevers! In produce section. --Thai Spicy Peanut salad dressing - a little goes a long way, divine w/ lentils! --chicken Tika Masala, and pretty much ALL of their Indian foods are scrumptious --Frozen garlic Naan --Frozen Turkey meatballs - I eat these all the time! Heat up 2 meatballs in a covered dish w a little chicken broth to keep em moist. --mini party-size meatballs - a bit higher in fat/calories than the turkey --Fresh buffalo mozzarella sticks --California Estate Olive Oil- cheap, good quality --Nonfat Greek yogurt in Mango, blueberry, and pumpkin (when in season!) --Unsweetened vanilla almond milk --Thai noodle salad (many other fabulous salads in refrigerated section) ...seriously, I could go on and on and on! Love Trader Joe's! -

Here is the menu they gave me: Sample Menu: Breakfast meat Carb Fruit/Veg. 2 eggs Waffle/toast 1 pat butter 1/3 cup light yogurt & 1 egg 3 slices turkey bacon 1/3 cup oatmeal 2 Tbsp. I was sleeved on 9/22/14 and can't eat an entire lean cuisine. I try to keep my portions at 1/3-1/2 a cup for most things. I can have larger portions of things like salad. Since your meal was meat loaf and mashed potatoes I'm sure that's why you could eat that much. The puréed soft foods seem to go right through. "Sliders" is what they call them. Once I started eating regular chicken and ground turkey I could eat so much less than broth or yogurt.
-
Some suggested soft foods might include: Scrambled eggs (soft, boiled, poached), Egg Salad, Tuna Fish moistened well with low-fat mayo, Chicken Salad, Salmon moistened with mayo (no celery or hard pieces of veggie), Cottage Cheese , Mild low-fat cheese, Mashed, canned or cooked fruit, Mashed, canned or well cooked veggies, Refried beans with a bit of low-fat cheese, Pressure cooked meats to tenderize, Soft fresh banana, Occasional mashed sweet potato, Yogurt, Occasional baked, mashed potatoes (yes, these are carbs, but your body does need some)
