    Calories at 3 weeks

This was a big relief to read. I am just over 3 weeks, and getting between 700 to 900 cals a day. Even adding up my minimal diet it is 710, and I hear some people even saying to do 500 a day. I could see 500 pre op liquid diet, but not now. Egg with cheese, Protein shakes with skim milk, and a yogurt a day. On occasion I eat a baby food thing of prunes to help with the constipation. this forum is so helpful.
  2. I am a March 19th..I am eating pretty much the same as everyone else..refried beans, shrimp and broiled fish, chewed well, greek yogurt, egg beaters with turkey sausage mixed in for breakfast, I do miss a fresh salad..don't know when I can have that, but I am really focused on the protein righ now. I also found Chick Fil A will sell their chicken salad in a cup for about $3. It makes 2-3 meals for me! Pudding and jello is getting old. i do eat lunch meat with a little grated cheese and squirt of mustard in it (my version of a ham sandwich!) Y'all share some more ideas! im learning a lot from this site!
  3. Sleeved 3/18/13 and allowed eggs yogurt refried beans cottage cheese and sf pudding. My diet was advanced to this at my one week postop checkup. The only thing I have eaten is cottage cheese and refried beans no more than 2 oz at a time. The thought of plain eggs makes me ill which is why I have not eaten them and I can barely stomach the sicky sweet protein drinks which is why I won't eat sf pudding either. I am so exited for my 3 month postop visit because I will be given more foods to eat.
  4. Soup, shakes (been doing plain powder or diluting with almond milk last couple of days as the artificial sweetener taste is getting to me). Experimented with HCG chili recipe and went down well, mashed potatoes, I did cream of wheat and it was too filling, Greek yogurt mixed with soup mix for something savory. Not proud but was out and had some grilled shrimp chewed really well. Out of everything I've had, the one thing that made me feel like I was going to barf was sugar free fat free pudding. You'd think that would be the least of my issues. I used to crave sweets but now craving meat and seafood although surgery day I told my bf I wanted a steak before I got too loopy. Sleeved 5/20.
  5. It's interesting how this surgery affects people so differently. Yes, a hot dog probably wasn't the best choice, but honestly, you could have had this reaction to anything you ate. I was on clear liquids ONLY for the first week, and when I had my first protein shake WOAH - it gave me serious gas, weird indigestion gurgling sounds and mild pain in my stomach. And that was something that was liquid! I'd say part of what you're going through is just your stomach saying "WHAT IS THIS!??!?" because it's been on the liquids for so long and is getting used to digesting what it's had so far. Then you over eat this dense food and your tummy is just letting you know it's not ready for all that! What helped me were gas-x strips - really helps with the gas, and fast! Also, walking around helps too. Drinking too much water on top if the full tummy sounds good in theory, but it doesn't always work like that. With how small your stomach is, the water could really 'over fill' your tummy and make it more painful. Try to get moving if you can! I hope it works itself out soon. I'm 17 days post op and I'm eating lots of stuff. I don't know if I have one of those sleeves of steel, but I haven't been sick once. No nausea, vomiting or pains - aside from the protein shakes, which still give me some gas, but not pain like the first time - and I'm having deli meats, low carb flat bread, yogurt, cheeses, cottage cheese... lots of stuff. I plan to try some fish this week, and canned chicken, then in a few weeks I'll try some veggies (coincidentally, my local farmers market will be open then, yay!) I certainly didn't have this surgery to be on a diet for the rest of my life. I like hot dogs every once in a while and plan to have them when I'm ready for it... so I'm not shaming you there. But considering we only get so little in us in the beginning, I'm trying to make it as good as possible. Deli meat isn't something I would normally have that often because of the salt and nitrates, but because it's something that I can tolerate now, I'm having it. While I am able to eat all these things, I can't eat much of it, and that's the key for me. So what if I had deli meat, it was ONE SLICE! I never thought I'd be completely full on just 1 banana for breakfast. The shakes are saving me with protein intake, because I really don't eat much. But when I DO eat, I can handle everything I've tried so far... I guess that's just lucky on my part. I definitely hope this passes for you soon!

    Calorie Counting During Blended Stage?

It's true, there are many variations from one program to another. I'm also on the protein shake diet (it's very difficult) I am allowed one "real" food meal but I have just been having a protein bar instead. I'm afraid I'll eat more than I should at that meal. After surgery I will be on modified liquids for 3 weeks. That includes protein shakes, yogurt, smooth cottage cheese, strained/blended soup. Basically no lumps at all! After I go for my post op at 3 weeks out they will give me the ok to move onto stage 4. Good Luck with your surgery!! Your just 2 days ahead of me! Super excited!
  7. Difficult choice. It depends on the type of carb or fat as well. All fats have the same cal but certain types of fat are supposedly bad - saturated fats, trans fats whilst others are good. Also low fat products are often as high or higher in calories as the fat that has been removed has been replaced with sugar. One example of this is yogurt.Often the low fat has as many cal as the standard variety. I would far rather eat full fat greek yogurt than the low fat varieties. The greek stuff is thick and satisfying whereas the low fat stuff is watery and leaves you still hungry. Then there is the debate about how foods that have been artificially sweetened can actually make you fatter. I can't remember the science behind this but it has something to do with the insulin response. The best way to go is probably to eat a balanced diet consisting of foods that are as close to their natural state as possible. Choosing lean cuts of meat, removing excess fat and satisfying your sweet tooth with fruit rather than manufactured products. And if it comes down to a choice between butter or marg then eat whichever you prefer the taste of!
  8. I would count it as a mushy/puree/soft food stage. It sounds like a perogi or wonton of sorts with spinach, or like a mini little quiche. Would that be the correct assumption? Dip that bad boy in some Greek yogurt. Be careful with the dough as it may expand on you a bit if you're still early out, but it's be considered a mushy by the definition/directions you've given.

    Breakfast Problems

Many of us have problems eating solids the first thing in the morning. Do NOT skip breakfast though. It really is the most important meal of the day. It jump starts our metabolism for the whole day. I usually have yogurt fr breakfast but if I let Cereal like miniwheats or raisin bran get a little soggy, I have no problem with it.

    low carb low fat

I eat a lot of fish lemon sole - sauteed in butter and lemon chile - burgers (just the patty 10% lean) I havent' made my staple chicken breast marinated in olive oil, lemon and oregano Veggies usually portobello mushrooms grilled. Have done baked eggplant w/ the greek garlcky yogurt.
  11. Hi Lisa - I have that same pain on my left side from the port! I've been worried that I've pulled something loose, but apparently that's how it's supposed to feel. The pain gets really sharp if I twist to my left or bend downward toward the left. I'll be glad when this goes away. As far as my diet - for two weeks I am allowed the following: juice, Jello, popsicles, broth, bouillon, fruit ices, coffee, tea (these were recommended for the first 2-3 days, then I could add "full" liquids like milk (skin or 1% - I drink 1%), vegetable juice, strained cream Soups, pudding (fat-free and sugar-free), diet ice cream and light yogurt. I am to continue with my Protein drinks twice per day until I'm on solid foods. I use the unjury Protein Drinks (not too bad - I can tolerate it). The only things I have actually eaten are jello, chicken broth, popsicles, sugar-free fudgesicles, vegetable juice and the protein drinks. I keep sipping on Water all day too. Yesterday was the first day that I actually felt hungry - my stomache actually growled. I'll be glad to get to the next stage which for me is mushy food, but at least I can have oatmeal, mashed potatoes (thin), and eggs. I called my boss this morning and I told her I go to the doc on the 13th, so I won't be back until at least the 14th. She was fine with that. I am off on the 15th, so if the doc gives me the okay, I may go ahead back on the 14th, and if I get weak, I'll just go home early. I truly am feeling weak - when I shower, by the time I finish I'm almost light=headed and have to hurry to my bed to lay down! I hope I can build my strength back up this week. -Rose Ann

    Sugar Cravings - Please help!

Did you have your one year labs? How were your blood sugar results? Sometimes new cravings are the result of body dynamics changing and its trying to get your attention. There has been research that has shown cravings can change every seven years. For me I used to crave sweets, now (before surgery as well) it was salty crunchy snacks...perhaps its just a change for you. When I do crave sweets I have a Greek yogurt "mint chip ice cream" pop which is about 90 calories, or a sugar free fudgcicle - 60 calories, or a tablespoon of no sugar added dark chocolate chips - 60 calories. I also purchased an icreami and make ice cream out of protein drinks to get that sweet itch taken care of! Cravings are both what people on these forums call "mind hunger" and/or they can also be triggered by what your body is needing. Either way its still annoying when you're watching what you eat. I personally have never found "eat a piece of fruit" to work for me, plus fruit has just as much sugar as some treats so its not really doing you any favors ( other than possibly healthier) so if I'm craving a "sweet" I have one of the things I mentioned above. I figure I've given up so much as it is and also gained a healthier body that I would rather have a healthier sweet option opposed to being harassed by a craving. 😋 As long as you keep it healthier and minimal - no harm unless you're worried about the "slippery slope". I personally just tell myself I've been through so much now - why f*** it up now? This keeps me on the straight and narrow path. Good luck and if you need to - ask your dietician about it. I hope this helps some. I know some ppl will suggest drinking more water, exercise when feeling these craving etc. none of which have worked for me..but give them a try they might for you!

Make the Protein shakes, yogurt taste as good as possible. I recommend the book, "The Bariatric Foodie Guide to Perfect Protein Shakes."

    85 lbs in 1 year??

I think the #1 basic guideline for me is to get to my green zone and stay there. Some of my other basics: -Know my full signals and stop eating -Stay busy when head hunger sets in (sewing, crafts, cleaning house...) - Stay away from fast food - Stick with fat free or sugar free the best I can -Take my vits. -Try to drink fluids between meals. I like iced tea and coffee, and sometimes water. I do not measure and am sure it's not 64oz a day. -I drink a yogurt smoothie with protein powder every weekend (used to more often) -Try to eat a variety each day. Sometimes this is not easy because I do still never eat bread, pasta, rice, dense meats, eggs, fried foods....... -Weigh several times a week to make sure my weight does not creep up too much and then modify as needed. -I ate quite a bit of chili in my weightloss phase to get in protein. Not large amounts, just small amounts often. -I do not think of this "diet" or lap-band as a punishment

    Best food for grazing !

that broccoli in hot garlic sauce sounds tasty. Like a previous poster stated, I eat every 2 hours and that helps me a lot. You should get rid of the biscuits and X the toast too. Try low fat string cheese sticks or low fat PB with celery. Remember the Proteins first. There was someone that made a sorbet out of frozen fruit, low fat Greek yogurt and 1 scoop of Protein powder. He put it in the food processor and it was done. This is something you could try too. I know I am lol. Breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, dinner, bedtime snack This is my plan. I also still drink my Protein shakes or do Pure Protein Bars (1/2 bar) which keeps me full as well.

    Best food for grazing !

I usually don't have time for breakfast and I don't get a lunch break, so I basically graze all day until my first meal in the evening. My go to's are mixed nuts with craisins (sorry Bufflehead, but I eat tons of nuts), beef and turkey Jerky (very filling), Protein smoothies, protein bars, raw veggies with cheese dip (Asiago artichoke is my favorite), popcorn, apples with Peanut Butter (I used PB2 until I reached goal), Plain Greek yogurt flavored with Protein Powder, and cheese and bagel crips. If I'm feeling like a snack but I know I'm not really hungry, I make myself drink at least 16oz of Water first. By then I'm usually over the snack cravings.
  18. I was told by my nutritionist to start aiming for 100 grams of protein a day almost right out of the gate. Of course, it actually took me a few months to work my way up that high. I have two Protein Bars a day (one for Breakfast and one as an evening snack), a reduced fat string cheese for a morning snack, a greek yogurt with some kashi Cereal mixed in for an afternoon snack (only add the cereal on workout days), and then some sort of meat for lunch and dinner. Lunch is usually leftovers from a previous dinner and I try to always eat different meats for both meals (so never chicken twice in the same day or pork twice in the same day). My dinners are usually just the meat from whatever my husband makes. We usually split it in half, he eats his half along with his sides for dinner and I'll have half of my half for dinner and then package the other half of my half up for lunch another day. His sides are almost always grains or starches, though, so that doesn't help me with my vegetable predicament. So, to sum up, I get just over 65 grams of protein from the items I eat every day and then try to get 15-20 grams each from whatever my lunch and dinner are. On days I have my kashi cereal in my yogurt I get a little extra protein along with the carbs from the cereal to help fuel my workout.
  19. Ok that doesn't sound too different from me. I usually have a Protein shake a day. Either an Isopoure w/40 grams or Criosport with 32 grams. Sometimes, if I have a sweet craving I'll have a GNC lean mint layer cake with 25 grams. But never more than one a day. On heavy workout days I'll usually have a Protein Bar as well. Other than that I have stocked up on baby bel cheeses and my husband loves them for Snacks too. I'm right there with you on not enjoying the hubby's sides because they are usually potato something. I do a greek yogurt for breakfast, cream in my coffee, and some kind of meat for dinner. Oh, and usually like tuna salad or chicken salad for lunch. I just looked back through MFP diary and it looks like I usually get around 80. If my calories for the day allow it, I'll usually have a vegetable at some point during the day. I hate to admit it but grazing is a weakness of mine. So I try to keep only things on hand that won't hinder me if I don't catch myself. And I struggle to get fluids because I'm just sick of Water, lol.
  20. Well, I tried my veggies and greek yogurt dill dip in place of my morning snack just now and I think I might die. I had red and yellow peppers and some zucchini and my stomach is like "OH NO YOU DON'T!" I managed to eat about half of what I had packed, but I'm paying for it right now. Guess I'm going to need to ease into this!

    Two week liquid diet

With my liquid diet it is only a week but I am able to eat unlimited amounts of raw or steamed vegetables. I can have limited amounts of plain nonfat yogurt, unsweetened applesauce, v8 juice, and low fat milk. 3-4 protein shakes a day and as much broth, jello, and popsicles I want. Has anyone else had a pre op like this? I'm on day 2 and so far it's not too bad. Certainly not pleasant but tolerable. My surgery is June 2nd!!!
  22. Nana -- I was banded the same day as you and am facing the same boredom. Luckily my doc is a bit more liberal with the full liquids: anything thin enough to go through a straw, but no chunks. You can maybe call your doc and see if he/she can loosen up the restrictions a bit? Yesterday I tried mixing not-fat plain yogurt with fruit juice to make a kind of smoothie. It was much more interesting to drink than the Protein shakes. the mad frog lady.
  23. My doctor wasnt even concerned about me meeting my protien numbers until I was onto soft foods...and that was at 4 weeks out... during mushies I ate alot of yogurt, cream of wheat, Beans (pinto, black, lentils) from Amy's Organic Soups, and grits....I refused to use the blender....oh and cheese on my beans...

    Not enough food?

Here's what my day looks like: Breakfast: Dannon Fit and Light Greek Yogurt and 3 Protein balls = 27 g Lunch: 5 oz. chicken breast = 35 g protein dinner will be: 4 - 5 oz of flounder = 28 - 35 g protein I may have a 1/2 c cottage cheese for a snack and that will put me over my needed amount. I started eating 1 oz at a time. Then pushed to 2 oz, then 3 oz….etc…I am now up to 5 oz and can eat comfortably at that. That's where I want to be. I make sure I get in protein first and if I am full (which I usually am) I don't eat anything more, but perhaps a sugar free popsicle at night as a treat!

    Losing weight preop!?! Help!

Here is what I would do: Do you have a myfitnesspal account? If not, get one. Set your daily caloric intake to 1200, and your ratios to 35% carbs, 30% protein, and 35% fat. Start logging EVERYTHING you eat. Weigh or measure EVERYTHING you eat. Focus on high protein foods like meat, fish, eggs, Greek yogurt, lower fat cheese, and cottage cheese. Small amounts of beans and lentils for fiber, green veggies. These should be your mainstays. Supplement with small amounts of healthy fats such as nuts, olive oil, and avocados. The higher protein and fat ratios will help you feel a bit more satisfied. That said, you will undoubtedly feel hungry and unsatisfied at times over the next month. You have to push through that. Yes, you are hungry, but it is okay to be hungry given the goal you are working towards. It won't be forever. Being hungry is unpleasant but it is not an emergency. Do not bother logging any exercise or "eating back" exercise calories. This will just slow you down. Good luck!
